The Walking Dead

OK folks, like I said in the interest post we're going to have a mix between WWZ and The Walking Dead. Initially the posts will be more akin to WWZ, in that you'll be recalling where you were when the zombies came and recounting how you got out (If you got out), then it will shift into a more standard type roleplay, day to day operations, etc.
Throughout this thread I would like to see everyone try to keep their focus on one major thing and that is ourselves as human beings. This is where it is more like The Walking Dead. This is a massive upheaval in our existence. Everything we know, have been taught, have accepted as concrete, has just been turned on it's ear. I want us to turn a hyper-critical eye on ourselves and our fellow man and try to play this as true as we possibly can.
Now, that being said, there is going to be subject matter that we know is going to be hard for some people to handle. Zombie children springs to mind. But this all a part of the experience.
Another thing to remember is that every person has their breaking point. Death is going to become a very real aspect of everyday life and we may reach a point where we feel we just CAN'T continue this existence, don't shy away from the dramatic death scene.

But until we reach that point, IF we reach that point, let's beat the fuck out of some zombies!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHARACTER SHEET

Setting: I asked that you come up with four possible locations where you're most likely to be when the zombies come and rank them from least favorable to the best and roll a single d6 to determine the starting point. Disregard any ones or sixes, you aren't starting in Canada or a hospital in New York City.

I rolled a four, so I start at work.

NAME: Screen names or nicknames will suffice if you aren't comfortable using your real name.

AGE: Yes, this is important.

STRENGTHS: Be honest. Physical, intellectual, life experience, even past jobs can be assets.

WEAKNESSES: Again, be honest. You know yourself better than we do. If you have a medical condition that may handicap you, include it (Unless it's too embarassing), weaknesses can also be in the form of your personal ideals. Kindness, compassion, loyalty, these things can easily be used against you. Get the idea?

EQUIPMENT: Limit to what's on hand at first, then be realistic when obtaining items further along. If you don't own a gun, but your dad does, you don't have a gun until you get to his place. If you have a gun but no ammo, don't pretend you do. You've got a $200+ club.

STRATEGY: Banzaii, run like hell, back to the wall, each style has it's own pros and cons.

PERSONALITY: Keep it brief, but there are certain personality traits that make you, you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As TM, I'm not going to tinker in your storylines very much. If we get a good solid core of people posting quasi-regularly, then I may whip up with a surprise encounter with a zombie, foul weather, or some other nasty surprise. We'll see how it goes.

Submit character sheets and EQ lists here in OOC and start with your initial post WWZ style. Have fun and good luck surviving the zombie apocalypse.

RE: The Walking Dead

Setting: Fort Drum, NY. I don't have a car so I'm almost always home, which is why I didn't bother rolling. Hope you don't mind...

NAME: Sasha Moyer

AGE: 18

STRENGTHS: Good strategist, although not all plans work the way she plans. She is 8 months pregnant and very protective of her unborn baby which gives her some strength when battling zombies, and the thought of being a mom makes it easier to cope with the changes. Is a good judge of character, and can usually tell when someone shouldn't be trusted. Strong-willed.

WEAKNESSES: Sasha doesn't like to see others hurt and she is worried about her husband, who was at work at the time she was attacked. She is very loyal and caring once she knows a person can be trusted, but she puts her family first.

EQUIPMENT:
Weapons: skillet, butcher knife
Other: Ramen noodles, 3 bottles filled with tap water.

STRATEGY: Hit and run. Don't wait around to see if the thing is still alive.

PERSONALITY: Good judge of character, lazy (from carrying extra weight all the time), light sleeper, grouchy when running on little sleep, her added hormones also make her overly emotional at times, and is easier to anger than usual.

BIO: Sasha's due date is Feb. 10th, a month before her anniversary. She's a house wife, and her husband is an E-3 in the military. In just a few weeks they were about to get out of the army, but then Sasha was attacked in her home by the zombies while her husband was at work, and she felt that she was forced to leave her home to protect herself and her unborn daughter.

RE: The Walking Dead

Setting: Spearfish, South Dakota. Rolled a 2, so I get the most populated, chaotic place I'm likely to be found... work.

NAME: David or Oobie (yeah, there are actually people that call me that now)

AGE: 26

STRENGTHS: People have a strange habit of liking me and trusting me very quickly. I don't pretend to understand it. I have a very slim frame, which makes for little in the way of physical strength, but added flexibility could come in handy for getting in and out of someplace. I love thinking through complicated problems.

WEAKNESSES: Absolutely zero knowledge about firearms, and pretty much worthless when it comes to cars. A sometimes crippling lack of confidence forces me to keep a lot of ideas to myself, to go along with another, bad idea, and complain about it all the while. Not the best thinker on the fly in pressure situations. And plenty more that would take entirely too long to go into.

EQUIPMENT: Not a whole hell of a lot useful. Cheap-ass digital camera that follows me everywhere, bicycle with handpump, spare grease for chains, emergency tire inflator, and a bike lock in an otherwise empty backpack.

STRATEGY: The "Curiousity Killed the Cat". As long as it doesn't see me, there's no reason to change that. Otherwise, it's the "Get the Fuck Out of Dodge". Pretty self-explanatory, that.

PERSONALITY: Tend to have a penchance for poorly timed jokes, and seem to shoe-horn words with at least three syllables into a statement that could be made much shorter. My outward personality tends to change depending on the sort of people I'm around, to more closely fit with theirs, especially in uncomfortable situations.

RE: The Walking Dead

Well seems like I am at work which means Wendy's.

NAME: John Jones

AGE: 22

STRENGTHS: I have seen more zombie movies than I can count on two hands so I have an advantage over most people in that I know how to kill the bastards. Me and my friends also have several plans just in case of a zombpocalypse scenario. I'm pretty good at thinking fast on my feet.

WEAKNESSES: I can't run very fast due to the fact that I am slightly overweight and I have sprained both of my ankles in the past and never let them properly heal. I am also extremely worried about my wife who was at home when the outbreak happened and my whole purpose at the moment is to get home to her.

EQUIPMENT: steel pole that was the handle to a mop at work

STRATEGY: Run and hide

PERSONALITY: I'm a very caring person and don't like to see my friends hurt. I also have a habit of trying to tell jokes to lighten up a bad situation though most of them just turn out lame or stupid. I am very loyal to my friends and will do anything in my power to protect them and this goes doubly for my wife.

RE: The Walking Dead

Quick gameplay note - while figuring out my "backstory", it occurred to me that most of us will want to go find their family/loved ones, and no one's really going to want to have to pick who of them will live and die, so how about we leave that up to dice as well?

Something like this:

1-2: Zombified. Your darling wants brains now.

3-4: Dead, but not zombified.

5: Missing. There's no 100% sign whether they made it or not, but if you find them you can decide.

6: Alive and well. Hooray?

Obviously the details of these are left up to the player's discretion, but I think it might be fun to add in more randomness. Also, I like using my dice again.

RE: The Walking Dead

That's not a bad idea AvA, one of my family members I can pretty much guarantee what the exchange that'll take place, but using the random roll will save a lot of us from having to roleplay a family member which would ultimately detract from our focus on ourselves. But for their initial post, they'll still be thinking about them and trying to get to them so we'll save that roll until we get to where we're most likely to find them.

QUOTED  I don't have a car so I'm almost always home, which is why I didn't bother rolling. Hope you don't mind...

Not at all. Makes perfect sense to me.

SETTING: Siskiyou County CA. I rolled a four so I start at work in Weed CA.

NAME: Bubba

AGE: 31

STRENGTHS: Physical powerhouse, above average intelligence, above average wisdom. Give him a gun and he'll have it figured out soon enough. Give him a car and he can probably keep it running well enough to escape in.
Work experience: Two years in a mill taught him how to run several different pieces of heavy equipment. Eight years in a production environment has allowed him to hone his skills with the forklift.

WEAKNESSES: He takes a hit in the dexterity department due to his weight, a pack a day smoker for thirteen years, has a tendency to be a bit lazy in his free time but is capable of working when it needs to be done.

EQUIPMENT:
Weapons: A Two ft. long piece of 1/4 in. steel pipe with a 3/8 in. thick head portion. Weighs about six or seven pounds.
Full tang hunting knife, cheap Chinese steel.
A seven thousand lb. forklift.
A bad attitude.

Clothing: Redneck Body Armor; Carhartt pants, knockoff Carhartt coat, leather logging boots with a three inch heel, camoflauge hat. It's been rumored that Carhartt is able to stop a taser bolt, should keep zombies out for a few minutes.

Other: A shitload of bottled water and a 4wd truck.

STRATEGY: Stand and fight but leave an opening for tactical withdrawal.

PERSONALITY: He's a bit of a recluse but it fiercely loyal to the few friends he has. He'll try to persuade you with reason and logic but will cut you loose if that fails to work. He prefers to take his lessons from Dispater, always have a contingency plan and nine ways out of a place, and he tends to err on the side of caution. Jaded, cynical, and possessed of an irreverent sense of humor he sometimes unwittingly nettles those close to him.

RE: The Walking Dead

Setting: Susanville California, Lassen County (home of CCC & High Desert State Prison)

Name: Gina

Age: 32

STRENGTHS: Have nursing and EMT training. I know how to work and shoot a gun, not always accurately, but enough to get the job done. Have a great judgment of character and common sense. Also I have had "what-if" scenarios pounded into my head by my husband, who you all know is a zombie freak. I can make my way around a car just fine, thanks to my uncle's. Do know how to make my own garden and rummage for food.
Also have worked at several gas stations, so I am aware of what ones have generators, what items they carry and how to turn on the emergency pumps.

WEAKNESSES: I'm not always the sharpest tool in the shed, when it comes to book knowledge. I am in pretty poor health for a woman my age. I have diabetes (opposite of normal diabetics), high blood pressure and a bad back. I have a soft spot, especially when it comes to my kids or any of my family and friends, and due to this soft spot I don't always make the best decision.

EQUIPMENT: Weapons: A small knife, that is pretty much useless, unless I need to open a package. Hubby has several guns. I have a full size car that I use most of the time like a 4wd.

CLOTHING:Just everyday normal clothing. Jeans, t-shirt, sneakers and a hoodie sweatshirt.

PERSONALITY: I have the mentality of "nobody left behind", which could be a weakness. I'm very easy to get along with until you cross my path the wrong way, then your screwed, once you have done that I will feed you to the zombies. I see and hear spirits, get over it and move on. Family and friends (who are my family, once we establish that good of a friendship) always come first.

Sweet! Looking good so far people. Are we waiting for anyone else? I know Lich's keyboard is trying to take a shit on him so it may be a while before he can join us.

Quick note, TIMEFRAME: We're looking at a fairly early point in the outbreak, the power is still on, communications are still functional, and the majority of the sheep have no idea why these maniacs are trying to eat them. Capiche?

Let's roll.

RE: The Walking Dead

Sorry, been trying to get school shit in order. I'm thinking of local rolls right now, I'll update this when I've got them.

UPDATE:

Setting: I rolled a 5, which is super awesome, but also pretty bad. My starting point is a local grocery store called Food Pride. This place has a general store named Alco attached on one end, and a hardware store that also sells guns, knives, and ammo on the other. There are doors connecting the stores on the interior. That's the good side. The bad is that it's a place where there's sure to be people, and due to the fact that I have no car, I'll probably have had to walk up there. But, if I'm up there, it means I went to do some shopping at the grocery store, so I'll have an empty back pack, oh joy!

Name: Stephanie

Age: 28

Strengths: I'm a fighter, and by that I mean, I argue, and I do get physical. I know how to throw a proper punch, and though it doesn't look like it, I am able to kick people and things pretty damn hard. I'm stubborn, I can McGyver the shit out of almost anything, and I do know how to use a gun, more specifically, rifles and shotguns. I know how to drive a car, both manual and automatic, I can build a fire, know how to assemble a tent, cook over an open fire, and will not stop when it comes to protecting my family.

Weaknesses: First off, there's the fact that I'm slightly overweight, and I have a problem with my right knee. There are times where if it's too humid, or if I've been standing or walking all day without a rest, it'll start to hurt really bad, and I'll develop a limp. I'm also a little accident prone and I have a temper, as everyone here fully knows. If I get too stressed out I can sometimes skip right past angry to full freak out, complete with hysterics. As much as I love my kids, I do consider them a bit of a weakness, because they can create as much stress as they do joy. I also can be a little too compassionate, I can't help it, comes with the territory of being an empath I guess. But, that doesn't mean I'm above telling someone to fuck off if it isn't going to benefit me. Also, I've never had to kill anything, but I have had to dispose of dead kittens before.

Equipment: Well, given where I'm starting at, my equipment comes down to my empty back pack, and whatever I can get my hands on in the store. Thank Bob the liquor department has lots of heavy blunt objects (i.e. heavy liquor bottles) and the two other stores have other things that could be used once I get to them.

Clothing: Jeans, vinyl combat boots I bought awhile back from Wal-Mart, t-shirt, black zip-up hoodie, and my leather jacket. It's freaking cold man!

Personality: Well, I love people who I allow to get close to me, but I am generally distrustful of people I don't know. Occasionally I will show sympathy towards a stranger, and even though I don't trust many people that doesn't stop me from talking to random people in line at the store. Sarcastic wit, and will find humor in the most inappropriate things. I may or may not suffer/enjoy bi-polar disorder.

Strategy: Grab what I can for weapons, and get home to my family and figure out what to do and where to go from there. Hopefully I'll be able to stock up on enough firearms and bunker down in a nearby "theater" that has only one door to the outside and zero windows. It's within walking distance of my house, and the most secure place I know of nearby, but, my town has:
1) A hospital and all that entails
2) 2 old folks homes
3) Lots of churches, which may be good for hiding out in, but given that old people are likely to go there as well, I'd say no.
4) 2 cemetaries on the two opposite ends of the town.

That safe house will do until I can think of somewhere else to go to. I have a friend who has a Jeep, so if he makes it to my house, I'll have a Jeep too.

RE: The Walking Dead

Setting:
I rolled a 5, so I start at my old house back in Nebraska.

NAME: Shanah

AGE: 18

STRENGTHS:
What she lacks in physical strength due to her small size is made up for in agility and speed. She's used to being the smallest kid on the playground and knows how to use it to her advantage. As a constant reader she's acquired a vast, jack-of-all-trades knowledge base - if she doesn't know about something, she probably knows about something related enough to figure it out. Thanks to growing up in farmland, she has both a decent knowledge of survival skills for "roughing it". Being a horror movie buff, she has an extensive knowledge of zombies and post-apocalyptic scenarios.
Also has a general distrust of people which is a strength and a weakness when it comes to dealing with other survivors.

Work experience:
Due to working on a farm with animal slaughter, she has an iron stomach and is very difficult to "gross out" and will not be distracted by things that might put off most people.

WEAKNESSES:
Being small, she's not very strong. A stress smoking habit has made her a bit wheezy, and despite being quick her endurance is not the best. She has a condition that makes her faint occasionally, and due to that does not know how to drive. Claustrophobia makes finding good hiding spots a bit difficult sometimes.

EQUIPMENT:

Colt M1911 Pistol - the only thing she took from her father's gun collection since it's the smallest, despite being a relic from WW2, it still works more or less. She has never fired it at anything besides targets and coyotes, and has one box of ammo for it.

Machete - fished out of the gardening shed, it's a little rusty but still effective.

Swiss army knife - cheap, old, and probably will be worthless at attacking anything besides cans.

Clothing:
Battered jeans, a black t-shirt with the bat signal on the front, and black converse shoes, ironically with neon green laces that say "I <3 Zombies". Leather jacket and a light grey hoodie.

Other:
Odds and ends in her backpack include an aluminum water bottle, a bit of canned and dried food, pink butane lighter, a makeshift first aid kit made of what she cleaned out of the medicine cabinet, change of clothes, half a pack of American Spirits, and a well-worn copy of The Hobbit that goes with her everywhere.

Mountain bike - old and battered, but it still gets from point A to point B.

STRATEGY: Sneaky. She's very well aware of her limitations and relies on being quick and quiet, knowing that if it comes down to a physical confrontation she's done for. If forced to fight she makes up for some of what she lacks in size with pure viciousness, and has exactly zero problems with "fighting dirty".

PERSONALITY:
She genuinely dislikes people as a whole, and as a result has always been a bit of a loner. The few people she does care about she would do anything for, holding to the principle of "friends help you move a couch, real friends help you move a body". Her tendency towards vicious sarcasm and offbeat humor, particularly under stress, frequently makes her grate on people's nerves.

East Coasters/Midwesters: I know you guys are getting hammered by snow and ice so you get a pass.

West Coasters: start trying to get yourposts up. They don't have to be fancy, I know we're all a bit rusty, but we need to start rolling.

My machete is a bit rusty too, doesn't stop it from hacking through trees. All that matters is that edge receives all the TLC it needs.

Of course, it was rusty when I bought it, so the neglect didn't come from me.

I'll put my next post up after I finish contemplating my egress from Weed. After looking at the town a bit more closely, work should have been the result of a 3 instead of a 4. There's only ONE road that connects the south part of the town to the north part. I'm going to have to check out the dirt tracks across the hills or else try my luck with the surface streets.

RE: The Walking Dead

So...Is this thing still alive and kicking? You say it is, but that was over 2 months past and nothing's happened since...

RE: The Walking Dead

It's a shuffling undead thing. Post and make it twitch.

RE: The Walking Dead

Alright, here goes. Sorry about the length, I sort of tend to pour all my thoughts onto the paper.

SETTING: Rolled a three. Coming back to the town I live in from a summer away at camp. This situation is fairly ideal equipment-wise, but less so in the location department.

NAME: Albert Matthews

AGE: 18, but looks older

STRENGTHS: Adolescence has treated me kindly; I'm very strong and flexible, capable of lifting loads greater than my own weight and capable of running 2 miles at a stretch. I generally have good tactical instincts on top of that. I know how to make split second decisions on my feet, respond quickly in emergencies, and if you give me a clear, defined goal that needs achieving, I will work through hell and high water to get it done, and done right at that. I have a knack for repairing fairly complex devices, although piecing them together from scratch is usually beyond me. I've fenced for 4 years, which has given me excellent combat reflexes and put my fight-or-flight instincts firmly under my control. Finally, I've worked 2 summers as a counselor in a wilderness survival camp in upstate NY, which has given me an impressive plethora of skills such as navigating obstacles with speed and efficiency, making/finding fire, shelter, and food in the wilderness, climbing both with equipment and without, and swimming and canoeing across running water. I plan to put all these skills to heavy use.

WEAKNESSES: I've never shot a gun before, so I really have little idea of what to expect from that. I wear glasses, which presents a fairly obvious problem during combat. I also have long hair which I refuse to cut, which I have been repeatedly told is a hazard when facing a foe whose main attacking is grabbing at you. Although I can make good short-term tactical decisions, work through fairly complex problems, and lead small groups with ease, long term choices are not my strong suit. I'm generally not good at delegating or prioritizing, meaning in terms of group size my leadership skills are limited. I'm not a big zombie movie fan, so I don't know much beyond the basics - aim for the head, don't get bit, etc. (However, I also don't have any preconceived misconceptions, which could also help.) My most crippling disadvantage is my ADD. Without a fairly steady supply of amphetamines, you can kiss all those valuable tactical insight and instinct control goodbye. I foresee at least a couple of daring drugstore raids in my futureā€¦

EQUIPMENT: All the supplies I take to camp. A first aid kit, a well-stocked toolbox suitable for outdoor activities, 50 feet of rope, a transistor radio, and as many clothes as I could fit in, all wrapped up in an enormous hiking bag with enough pockets to carry twice as much as a normal backpack and enough adjustable straps and such to make it feel like half the weight.

STRATEGY: Do you mean strategy or tactics? If you mean strategy, I plan to get away from population centers, because that's where the zombies will be congregating. I assume that if other survivors do the same, it will indicate they are in possession of the greater majority of their marbles. If I can find enough, it will allow me to form a close, trusted group, we can find a secure place to hide, and everything will hopefully be hunky-dory. If you mean tactics, I follow a flexible force doctrine. No plan, no matter how genius, can guarantee survival past the first time it's used, so why waste time thinking one up? Use every conceivable element in your surroundings to your advantage, and if this does not result in victory, run like hell and rest easy in the knowledge that victory was never possible in the first place.

PERSONALITY: I'm almost, but not quite a loner. I would rather be in a small, close-knit group than by myself, but I'd rather go lone wolf than become part of a large, unwieldy mob. I get good grades in school, but usually in subjects that aren't useful in a post-apocalypse scenario; this may or may not stop me from behaving rather pedantically at times. In others, I value intelligence, cunning, loyalty, respect, and courage. My take on respect is this: you don't have to do follow my ideas at all times, but at the very least you had better damn well listen and consider them seriously. My trust is hard to gain, but if you've gained it, you're as good as family, and that's not a tie that I let slip easily.

Note: While trimming the fat from this (previously even more) ridiculously lengthy post, I deleted a previous edit where I asked some questions of SisqAlpha like a total dumb***. (By the way, what's the policy on cursing? And is there some sort of guide-type thing for new posters so I don't have to keep asking all these stupid questions?) If anyone cares, the questions I deleted have been preserved in SisqAlpha's post.

RE: The Walking Dead

QUOTED  You say we're going to start apart, in our various locations, then all meet up at some point in the future.

My apologies, I thought I specified that there was only a possibility of this happening, depending on the course of events in the RP. For some of us, it is very likely (Such as Lich Nexus and myself) because we are geographically close to each other. For others, it's possible, but not probable because they are roughly in the same region. For now, I'd say just go it like you would if you were completely on your own. These are YOUR experiences in the zombie apocalypse.

QUOTED  Does anyone have any ideas on how I might ditch my family?

Rogue National guardsmen take them out, they were at the hospital when the first walkers reanimated, flat out disbelief in the possibility of zombies, or in my father's case, poor health and limited mobility would cause him to stay home even with the undead pounding at the door. Some people just accept it as fact that they are going to die. One book you may want to read while doing this is World War Z by Max Brooks.

QUOTED  Anybody have any idea how I might trim the fat from this?

Make good stopping points for yourself. Go encounter by encounter if you need to, or, if the muse grabs you by the balls and decides to run, go with it. I'm flexible.

And I'm going to say it again, the Lich needs to get his fuckin' ass in this thread or I'm going to leave him undead in his house with ground zero in his back yard and steal all his D&D shit.
