Gaslamp Cthulhu

So, Unbeliever and I have been scheming. (a dangerous pasttime, I know)

And we feel this board is sorely lacking in a Call of Cthulhu game, ever since Class was canceled. (see what I did there?) I've been scheming for one for about a year now, to the point of a whole word document filled with notes and plans, but haven't had any time due to school until now. But, I suppose I ought to see if there's any interest first.

It is London, just after New Year's day of 1899. A strange fervor has gripped the merry old town, a sort of ecstatic terror as the new century bears down.

Doomsday preachers seem to populate every street corner, cajoling and cursing listeners to prepare themselves for judgment. Members of high society with enigmatic connections disappear without a trace, and their absence is hushed up rather than investigated. Secret societies meet in abandoned buildings to consider their ancient texts, and leave knowing fear down to their bones.

Even the lowest of the low are not safe, as a murderer stalks the streets of the old town, leaving behind corpses so mangled some whisper no human hand could have done it. The occupants of madhouses stir and whisper words in tongues that have not been heard since man was a crawling reptile slinking from the ocean's depths. The alleyways are darker, the nights are longer, and this winter promises to be the coldest.

Something is coming, and whether it ends this world or births a new one, mankind does not look to be welcome in the dawn to come.

But still, still... some people know. They cannot see the all of it, but they can perhaps grasp the shape of it. That something is wrong. They know this is no regular mob hysteria. Whether by their knowledge of manuscripts long forbidden, by things half-formed seen prowling the streets, or mere intuition, they know a long night lies ahead.
The only choice is whether to stand against it or join it.

The atmosphere I'm looking for is something like the recent Sherlock Holmes movie meets From Hell, with tones of The Brotherhood of the Wolf. Classic gaslamp intrigue and mystery, but with supernatural tones and a constant feeling of dread. This time, when the plucky investigator solves the mystery of the haunted manor and finds there is no ghost, he instead discovers there is an otherworldly rift threatening to consume all sanity from those who behold it.

For actual formatting, I'm looking for quality over quantity. One-paragraph posts just aren't quite going to work here, so I'd much prefer you post less often if you post more content of good quality when you do. Newcomers to Cthulhu and RP in general are welcome though I will expect you to do at least a little research into the Mythos, and accept constructive criticism when it's offered. I'm hoping to make this a fairly long game, spanning the year of 1899 and going from a slow-burn mystery to a more frantic action-oriented game by the end.

If there's interest, I'll post the cast of characters I'm looking for - these are just vague roles that you're allowed to fill in yourself, and those that aren't taken I will play myself or throw at Oobie. There will be secrets and plotlines only your character (and myself) are privy to, which I will private message you - and this goes for everyone. Who you share these secrets with is up to you, and needs to be considered carefully since some - maybe even most? - of the other characters may be tainted by the Old Ones already and could turn on you.

Dice rolls may be incorporated into the game at some point, probably to determine if your character is going mad and whatnot. This IS a Cthulhu game, so please prepare yourself for the likelihood of death and/or insanity. (though obviously, neither has to end your involvement and any amount of wonderful things can happen to keep you involved from hauntings to breaking out of the asylum)

So, any takers?

RE: Gaslamp Cthulhu

QUOTED  Sherlock Holmes

Haven't seen it.

QUOTED  The Brotherhood of the Wolf.

Never heard of it.

QUOTED  there is no ghost, he instead discovers there is an otherworldly rift threatening to consume all sanity from those who behold it.

This, I understand.

QUOTED  do at least a little research into the Mythos

If Lich has anything on it, I'll borrow it. I've read some Lovecraft, but it's been a while since my last exposure so I'll need to refresh myself on the writing. Stephen King's short story "N." comes close but it's more of a modern setting. I'm interested. If you have any links for online materials, I'd be happy to check them out.

And tell Mr. Oobie to get his ass posting in my zombie thread.

Failure on both counts, sir.

A lot of Lovecraft's writing is available online since it's so old. For a more rundown basic version, try this wiki, which also has details from the tabletop games. (I'm not really running this off the actual Call of Cthulhu game but I'll be using some bits and pieces of it)

And while you're at it, punch Lichy in the giblets and see if he's interested!

Whenever he drags his hippie ass out of the hills I will. If he doesn't at least post in here soon after bugging me about it, he can expect an angry drunk phone call from me in his near future.

Three kids and a full time job, princess. Most of my free time is spent playing referee and trying to sleep.

He still hasn't gotten the other computer hooked up.

RE: Gaslamp Cthulhu

So we're quoting each other now? Alright, why not.

QUOTED  (see what I did there?)

No, actually. Was it the C's? That's all I can think of.

Why is this description reminding me of Newark on a slow news day?

QUOTED  the recent Sherlock Holmes movie

Oh, come on. Couldn't you have found a better example of gaslamp than that? The movie barely counted as steampunk. The only thing remotely steampunk about that was the electric bomb-setter-offer-device at the end, and that was more lazy writing than anything else.

Alright, that's getting annoying. I'll just say this: I'm no stranger to Cthulhu or RP, but a Cthulhu RP is a new one, so let's see how this goes. The timespan seems a bit ambitious, especially for this particular forum, but if you think that'll work, I'm more than willing to hop along for the ride. And finally, would you mind posting the characters fairly soon? I'd like to start working with my character ASAP, but I don't want to start fleshing out a character in my head and find that s/he doesn't fit in with any particular archetype and has to be scrapped.

Many thanks.

Forum joke, kiddo. We old fogies do those from time to time.

Good thing I never used the word steampunk in relation to it in my entire post, and good thing you ignored all the other movies I listed. Coming in and complaining about an RP you ostensibly want to join, when you haven't actually read the original post? Not a great way to get started on a new forum, champ.

Unfortunately, at this point we only have three people. We'd need at the very least one more to get anything going here, so until we have enough interest this is in hibernation. Hopefully a person who said they would participate before can return to the internets soon, and we can kick this off.

Apologies, oh my sheikh, I meant no insult. My mistake appears to stem from the fact that my understanding of the term 'gaslamp' was flawed. However, that does not completely excuse my making an ass of myself, and I do hope you'll forgive me for it. I've learned (well, re-learned) two valuable lessons; one, read a post thoroughly before replying, and two, avoid being smarmy when trying to make a good impression to a forum you're new to. Or anywhere on the internet, really, it's just a bad idea.

Well, here's my take on it. The thread's been in hibernation for five months before I posted, yes? Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't see the harm in putting it out there, even when there isn't enough interest just yet. I mean, posting the characters may even get someone who sees it interested enough to join. It's been known to happen. If it's a matter of you not having enough time or something, I understand completely, and you just have to say the word, but if the only thing you're waiting for is an increase in interest...well, leaving it alone for even longer in the hopes that something will happen might not be the best solution, ifit'snottooforwardofme beggin'yerpardonsire blessingsbeuponyoursoul mayyourestinpeace, know what I'm saying?

Here's hoping I didn't just stick my foot too far down my throat...

P.S. Also, who are you waiting for? Would their screen name happen to be Lich_Nexus, by any chance?
