New Game(Open Brainstorming)

Hey everyone I'm new to the site, but not new to RPing though xD

Anyway, getting on subject now. A lot of the games here seem to have been going for a long while (meaning they are deeply developed with strong ties to the existing players, which would make me feel like an intruder if I wanted to join) and others seem to have very large long thought out worlds (which would make me feel like I was intruding on someone's ideas by joining). So I'm wanting to open up an RP that we can develop while we play rather than basing it on something already existing.

To let this be interesting to more players, this game is also up to brainstorming details about the setting in such. Here are some things that are very much open to choice:

Time Period: Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, Industrial, Modern, Near Future, or Far Future?

Location: Our world/universe? Or a completely original one?

Realism Level: Should everything be based on what we know is possible? Should there be magic? Or what kind of compromise between both?

Character/Control Limit: Should each person have just one character? Or can they have a couple? Or do we want a much larger scale control system, such as whole civilizations?

As things like that are answered we can break them down to more specifics.

One thing that will be in the RP, not open for changing. People can have any kind of character they desire from monsters to animals or just plain humans, I'm not limiting it to generic humans/elves/dwarfs/etc. (feel free to create your own races and where they hail from) the only restriction on this is nothing god-like or overpowered please.

Well I guess to start this you should tell us your preferences first.

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

I'm really flexible, that's why there's choices xD but if I must...

Time Period: Medieval or Far Future

Location: Original universe

Realism: Magic exists but it's not very powerful

Characters: Each player can have 1-3 characters

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

Yeah. Activity here is...sporadic. College and work get in the way. And in truth, there's only about a dozen or so of us that hang around the site regularly. Those that are here mostly use the community forums and only glance at the RP stuff (Myself included). This is an unfortunate state of affairs, but attempts to revive the threads have met with mixed reactions.

Personally, I believe that burn-out had a lot to do with the low RP activity. When I first joined there were so many running games that I was intimidated. But, quite suddenly, activity just dropped off. There were occasional big threads, but overall members just got tired of doing the same sort of stuff.

Jump forward to now and the attitude of the active members is one of "wait and see". We get a few newbies (like yourself) who come in and want to get activity up so they start posting things. Of course some ideas are good, some are bad. What's happened in the last year or so is that there have been too many bad ideas (One newbie's entire thread consisted of "Subject:halo rpg...Body:...just an idea")that we're suspicious of anything new. A far as the good ones go, no one wants to take the time to work on a character for a thread that'll die soon anyway. Which then leads to the downfall.

On your thread specifically:
There's just not enough there. Our members seem to be a lot more receptive to short, well developed "stories" more than really open-ended, broad spectrum ideas.

Oh...one more thing that hampers RP activity is the fact that those few of us here have very different tastes. There a a few that like zombie stuff, some that like Fantasy, and a few that like sci-fi.

However, a truly good idea will capture most of us for a while at least. So Good Luck!

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

I could provide a big ol' well developed story in background. But if I did that I'd be running the risk no-one would be interested and all that work would be for naught.

While with this, since it's based on votes the majority would be pleased with what comes out of it. But I guess if there's noone around to vote it won't matter ><

Well give us a developed story idea and than we can discuss from there. At least than you have a chance at convincing us.

Should I start with the exact story the RP takes place in/about? Or should I lay all the background out first?

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

The best thing to do is to summarize the background and give a little info on the story, without giving anything away. Too much Story and Background stuff makes it difficult to get started. No one wants to try and read pages of background when a few sentences will do.

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

The year is 3572. Humans have expanded from Earth to control a large area of the local bubble (an area around about 200 with the boundaries marked by thicker interstellar gases. During this time the humans have encounter 4 other major species that also live in the local bubble.

The first being the Galaren species, who physically look much like humans but their skin has a green tint, the Galarens are also a warlike species; the Galarens would be the first aliens the Humans get into an interstellar conflict.

The second race discovered were the Esoi. The Esoi turned out to be the aliens that had been spotted on Earth in the past, the 'grays'. The Esoi had been going through off and on wars with the Galarens for a long time. The Esoi are seen as the oldest species in the local bubble.

The Avani species are much more elusive than than the other races, but they still control a great deal of territory. They are an insectoid race, and all their technology is a mix of biological and artificial parts. The Avani have a limited telepathic hive-mind.

The Lightfirean species appear as humanoid foxes, which in fact they really were. Long ago an ancient race just called 'The Seeders' relocated a few of Earth's animal species, genetically modified, and relocated to other planets where they could evolve to dominate the planet. Lightfireans very intelligent, although not very physically strong.

There are many minor species, but these four control most of the local bubble. Although the races have complex relationships to one another, and at least two of the races are at war with one another at any given time - they are about to be driven together by an seemly unbeatable force; the Hixoe. The only knowledge on the Hixoe is they are from the future - contacts with them have such low survival rates it's difficult to gather much data on them.

Good background...The species types remind me of Starcraft, which is a good thing...My only curiosity is how we would start this story. I am interested...maybe if you get two or three others you can give us a brief first post to engage the story. Excuse any grammar issues...had a few beers...

The species are actually taken from a world building forum I also am on. The Lightfireans are my personal creations (why their description was a little larger than the others). I can get more in depth if needed, this was just a summary of each.

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

Very nice background. I agree with Animus, get us an engaging story and I'm in.

One thing I am required to mention (as a mercenary in service to the grammar Nazis) is a few missed words and the odd grammar issue, but nothing major.

Here's to a successful RP! *Raises a tot*

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

As I said I really just threw that together. If needed there are pages and pages on them with grammar checked and everything, but it would be a lot to take in.

A major battle against the Hixoe has just taken place. Our characters were on board some of the ships during the fight. As the situation started to turn bad our characters abandoned their ships and all took refuge on one ship. The crew of the ship we transported on is dead. If they are going to survive they need to put aside their differences and take control of the ship, and get out of the battle zone before it's too late. (plot would move on after that but I think that's enough for now)

Your character can be any race you want, as long as they are not overpowered. Try to balance strengths with weaknesses. Try to pick different races than others, the diversity would strengthen the plot as our characters have to overcome prejudices they have in order to survive.

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

All the races have (very grudgingly) formed an alliance to try to drive back the Hixoe threat. Only shear desperation to survive got them to do that. So tensions are high, but they won't shot each other on sight. But here's some basic relationship data if needed.

Human - Galaren : The Humans and Galarens had been at war already when the Hixoe invasion started. They were the last to races to join the alliance. Humans and Galarens refuse to serve on each others vessels or share technology.

Human - Esoi : Humans and Esoi have long been allies. They have no quarrels.

Human - Avani : Humans see the Avani as mysterious and strange. They don't trust them much and aren't sure how to interact with them socially.

Human - Lightfirean : The Humans feel a strange connection to Lightfireans, although it's hardly noticeable. Lightfireans are just highly evolved foxes originally from Earth, so they almost regard each other in recognition compared to other aliens. However the Humans don't trust the Lightfireans.

----------------------------

Galaren - Human : The Galarens have long wanted to conquer the human race and exploit their territory. The Galrens are hostile towards humans despite the alliance.

Galaren - Esoi : The Galarens and Esoi have been at war for a very very long time, in fact warring even before the Humans first started making fire. The conflict is so old though hostility isn't very strong, they've nearly lost interest in the conflict and only fight anymore because it's second-nature.

Galaren - Avani : The Galarens don't understand the Avani very well, but appreciate the Avanis' honor when it comes to fighting.

Galaren - Lightfireans : The Galarens hate the Lightfireans as much as they do the Humans. The only reason they are not at conflict with the Lightfireans is Human space happens to be between the two.

----------------------------

Esoi - Humans : The Esoi view the Humans as a child race they are here to parent. They protect the Humans but refuse to offer them any of their technology, believing Humans need to develop it on their own.

Esoi - Galarens : The Esoi see the Galarens as a stupid barbaric species. Despite their belief the Galarens are stupid, they haven't been able to defeat them for thousands of years.

Esoi - Avani : The Esoi are highly interested in the Avani. Quite frequently the Esoi abduct the Avani to experiment on.

Esoi - Lightfirean : The Esoi watch the Lightfireans carefully, not trusting their motives. Lightfirean technology is in some areas as good or better than Esoi, which is saying something since the Lightfireans are a much younger race.

----------------------------

Avani - Everyone : The Avani hive mind thinks the same on all alien species. They do not understand the other species reliance on rock and metal. The Avani want all the races to go and leave them alone so they can wander the universe freely.

----------------------------

Lightfirean - Human : The Lightfireans view the Humans as a major competitor for space and technology. The two races are nearly the same age. They fight a cold war, but no large conflicts have emerged. Like all other races, the Lightfireans see the Humans as inferior, Lightfireans are very racist.

Lightfirean - Galaren : The Lightfireans hate the Galarens as much as the Galarens hate them, but Human space seperates them from fighting.

Lightfirean - Esoi : The Lightfireans look at the Esoi with earnest curiosity. They want Esoi technology badly. Lightfirean spies are often caught in Esoi space.

Lightfirean - Avani : At first the Lightfireans were interested in Avani bio technology, but when they figured out they simply couldn't learn that technology they just see the Avani as a waste of space.

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

So, we're allies by a mutual interest in prolonging our own existences. Sweet.

Can I get a little more info on the Avani? Mostly looking for physical stuff. You say "insectoid", but are they more like beetles, flies, ants, etc? Or are they humanoid, but with a chitinous exo-skeleton instead of an endo one?

They are about 6 feet tall and the best way to describe them would be as anthropomorphic praying mantids.

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

You know what. I'll just ask all the questions I can think of right here. That way I can get a good background formulating. Note: I'm not doing this to try to make your brain pop...mostly. I really believe the information would be helpful to making a good character. Plus it makes you think about stuff, and the latest research says thinking is good for your brain!

Hands or no hands?(hand-like appendages included)

Is there some sort of caste system? If so, do different castes look and behave differently?

Does the hive-mind telepathy work over interstellar distances or only within a localized range?

Is there a limit to an Avani's individual identity? (I.E. names, freedom to maim others, self preservation vs. the survival of the hive)

Is the Bio-tech linked to Avani through the telepathy or do they still need monitors and input devices?

A question I won't ask: What allowed the Avani to grow to such large proportions?

I suppose that's enough grilling for now.

RE: New Game(Open Brainstorming)

Hands, we'll say three long fingers and a thumb

Sometimes the Avani might fight each other to display their strength, the winner would have a more dominate role

It's localized

Yes, Avani are mostly independent but they use the hive mind to share information.

It's linked to them through telepathy most of the time, but some things have more physical controls.

Sorry Lance, my laptop's power cable decided to wig out last week and though I could still do things with it, even running Firefox bogged down my processor, so I was doing only necessary things.

Now though every things good. Ordered a new cord, and on the day it was delivered the old one shaped up (of course)

I think all my questions are answered, so guess someone oughta kick Animus around to get him in gear.
