((OOC: Dunno if this is a good idea...but what the hell. :)))

The road was long and dusty. It seemed well worn but by what, who knows? She walked along in a daze, the world, whichever world it was, blurred around her. It didn't matter. She was used to walking without seeing straight and her sense of balance allowed her steps to stay even and true to her chosen path. Trees lined the dusty road. She could not remember ever seeing so many trees with nothing else in between. They stretched as far as the horizon and then some.

She kept walking even though she could not remember ever being so tired. Finally she came upon a sign of life. In the middle of nowhere, a farm with a single farmer came into view. Blurred as her vision was, she couldn't tell whether the figure was a man or a woman, which made her mad for some strange reason. As she walked closer, she analyzed her reaction and decided she was proud of her 20/10 vision and now angry because it had betrayed her. That same logical part of her mind that realized this also came to the conclusion that she was in shock and had no idea where she was or where she was going.

"Hail! You're lookin' mighty lost there, young lady," the farmer called kindly. The "young lady" moved closer and studied the farmer. His outline wavered in the bright sun though she could make out that he was tanned and middle aged. His face was kind, though and almost reassuring.

The farmer studied the young woman right back, noting her dazed expression and weariness with concern. He decided that if she didn't look so bewildered and travel worn she would be beautiful. Straight black hair fell down to her thin shoulders. Her body was slender and graceful, her eyes a chocolate brown. Her features were rather severe, her expression almost fierce but the farmer could imagine that her smile would light up any man's world.

"Are you alright, young lady?"

She looked up, startled. "Yes...I think so...just lost..."

"Where do you need to be? Perhaps I can give you directions."

A strange intelligence entered her eyes, as if she knew he could do no such thing but she answered anyway. "I need to go home...to Chicago."

The farmer frowned. "I have never heard of such a place," she didn't look surprised. "If you keep going along that road you'll reach Solace and eventually Qualinesti, the land of the elves, if that helps."

The woman looked at him sharply and the farmer cringed. "Elves?" He nodded adn she muttered something he didn't understand. Come to think of it, her accent was rather strange.

"Maybe you should come in and rest..." She did look rather pale. But the young woman shook her head and thanked him before starting back on the road. "What's your name?" he called after her.

She turned around and hesitated before shouting back, "Stacey." Then she turned back and was gone. The farmer shook his head and went back to work.

Stacey made her way towards Solace. Elves! She suddenly recalled the short, stout man she had encountered earlier. Was he an elf? Pictures of little men dressed in green with little pointed shoes on, working around Santa's workshop entered her mind and she laughed. Elves. Ridiculous. She kept walking. Maybe if she walked far enough, she would wake up.Good becomes ignorant.

((OOC: What school are ya at? Come on!! We need more people!! :)))

Stacey's feet carried her up a large hill. It was spring and though she treaded on soft grass her legs still felt as if they were on fire. She had never walked so far in her life, indeed she had never wanted to. She stopped on top of the hill and swayed gently, eyes closed. She almost fell over. With a fierce growl, she started forward again. Her body was now betraying her as her brown eyes had. She had never fallen over from being dizzy in her life! She practically ran up the next hill even though the pain was enough to make her scream. She stopped at the top and swallowed her scream.

A small town sat in the distance. It was quite possibly the strangest sight she had ever seen and she blinked several times. Eventually the possiblility of a mirage ruled itself out, though insanity continued to be an option. The buildings were primitive, as the farm had been. But that wasn't the strange part. All the buildings were in the trees! It looked like her favorite level out of that stupid Donkey Kong game, the one where you swing through...Tree Top Town. She giggled. Perhaps she was going crazy...[No,] some logical, cold part of her mind said. [You only wish you were...It would be an adventure.] Sighing, Stacey started for the town.

[So this is Solace...] she thought as she climbed the stairs towards the ramps up above. Her pain had left. It had been mostly mental anyway and now that she had something interesting to do it was hardly needed. She felt as a stranger feels upon entering a dream, scared but excited, that excitment powering her steps, no matter how far she had to go.

Laughter and the sweet scent of food wafted from the largest building. The young woman suddenly realized she was hungry. She stopped and reveled in the feeling. She was never hungry. Ever. The building seemed to be a public place so she went in and sat down in a large wooden chair. It was heavy and solid. [Must have cost a fortune...] she thought. She turned to study the place. It seemed to have been grown as part of the tree as opposed to built, with a large warm fireplace and a bar. The word tavern came to mind, startling Stacey. The fact that this was a tavern wasn't all that strange...but when she thought the word it came in two languages. The one, tavern, was familar to her but the other was foreign. She suddenly realized all her thoughts were coming in English and this other language...which is why she had been able to talk to the farmer! She shivered. Someone had been messin' with her head...literally. No. This had to be a dream. Might as well enjoy it. She wasn't the type to have great dreams.

The food caught her attention again and she was suddenly starving. But she wasn't stupid and knew that a place like this, especially considering the building cost and the expensive chairs, wasn't about to just give her food. She was suddenly frightened beyond reason. This place wasn't like her dreams! It was cold and painful and so horribly different. She shivered and moved to a corner where she huddled trying to gain control of her fear. Tension built up in her thin body till she was shaking so hard she couldn't breath. She tried to scream, to let out the tension as she usually did but air would not move through her pale lips.

((OOC: Heeheehee. This is so cool. This character is easy cuz it's all based on me but at the same time, hard cuz I'm trying to figure out how I would really react to all this stuff. Sorry if I talk too much but I'm a complex person :)))Good becomes ignorant.

((DePaul . . . was just up at Montrose Park yesterday for an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament! ))

Caitlin was lost in thought as she went about her chores. It had been about two years since she had somehow ended up here, two long years she had gone from an aspiring classical cellist to a waitress in this fantasy land. In some ways, she had become accustomed to it, to the elves and the dwarves and dark humans that reminded her of 'Aragorn' from Tolkien's books. In other ways, however, she missed the Cubs, brand-name jeans, and technology. She always wore a 'Cubs' hat when she did her grunt work, scrubbing floors, tables, etc, which caused a stare or two. This always reassured her that she was different, and that rememberances of television shows she used to watch and movies she loved were not just hallucinations, but things that actually existed . . . *or hopefully still exist, somewhere else . . .* She thought.

One of the other barmaids brushed past her and patted Caitlin's shoulder. Caitlin smiled at Tika. Tika Waylan had helped her so much when she first arrived, helped her find a place to live and a job to sustain her.

Caitlin stood and took off her hat, brushing her forehead with her arm. She was tall, about 5'8", with short, dark hair and warm brown eyes. She looked out of place with her barmaid's outfit and Cub's hat. She had been planning to work up enough money and then travel, seeing what else there was to this world that as of lately she had only heard. Perhaps someone else would know a way back . . .

"Hey, who are you?" A small hand reached up to Stacey. "I'm Thistledown Kendergnome. I'm not actually a gnome, but I was born and raised in Mt. Nevermind. So where are you from? Your not from around here, I can tell. Oops, here you dropped this strange leather thing. ... Hey! There's a picture of you inside it! How'd they do that?"Free the flame and sear the grasses,

((OOC: I'm carrying a leather thingie?? Oh yeah my wallet...heeheehee. Aren't we slow today? :)))

Stacey looked up at the small creature that was holding her wallet. She was still shaking violently and for a moment it was all she could do to keep her teeth from chattering right out of her head. But the small being's happiness was infectious and after a moment she relaxed slightly, just enough to talk. Reaching over she took the wallet from the little man and held up another picture.

"They took my picture with a camera...this is my driver's lisence and this is a picture of my friends..." her voice was soft and Thistledown had to lean forward to hear her. An intense saddness came over her at the mention of her friends, for she had the feeling she would not see them for a long time. Thistledown grabbed for the picture excitedly and started talking a mile a minute. Stacey missed everything he said but took the opportunity to study him.

Her first impression had been of a child, her next of a midget. She now realized neither was right. This little man was exactly as he was supposed to be. And he was so surprised to see the simple picture! His liveliness was as catching as his happiness and Stacey could feel her spirits lifting.

"You said you were from Mt. Nevermind..." But she couldn't finish the inquiry as Thistledown looked up suddenly and reminded her that she had yet to tell him her name. Stacey felt her insides freeze. She did not want to tell this man her name, though she had no real reason.

"It's M-m-majere..." she stammered. It was a word she had heard on the way here, before meeting the farmer.

"Oh, you mean like the god? My Uncle Trapspringer once..."

The rest of the words were lost on the young woman. [Great! Way to pick a name!]

"You misheard me. It's Managerie," she said her voice harsh but firm. Managerie was one of her favorite words, as it rolled off her tongue. Thistledown said "Ohhh, Managerie." before launching into yet another story.

[Yes, Managerie would do.] she thought. It felt important to seperate this dream world from her real life in every way possible. And until she left, she would play along but not as Stacey. Looking down at Thistledown, she said in a firm voice that surprised both her and the kender.

"I need something to eat. And some new clothes. Can you help me, Thistledown?"

((OOC: Okay this probably sounds weird but I think it'll be pretty stupid if I meet someone from my time, from the same city, right away. That would be kinda messed up and boring. So how 'bout I pretend to be from Krynn and make some friends first and then we become suspisious of each other or something...I dunno. I just don't think we should meet right away. If you agree, lose the Cub's hat. The White Sox are better anyway :) Oh and Ontarys, if it's not in conflict with any plans you might have made, please be a mage of some kind. Nightshade walked into the inn of the last home. It was a busy place. The smell of otiks spiced patatos was intoxicating. Along with the smell of dwarf spirits. Nightshade loved to drink with the humans and dwarves that frequented this inn. They showed little in the way of prejudice that he was accustomed to. He walked into the inn the wind swirling his grey cloak. The sun bouncing off his grey armour. It being early in the evening there were few people in the bar. The ussual bar maids a few men sitting at tables and a kender in the corner harassing a woman. Nightshade made his way to the woman and the kender. He noticed right away that she was travel worn and was quite dirty. But if she was not she would quite good looking. By human standards that is.

((Sounds fine, no Cubs hat . . . and lets say my hair's grown out since I've been here, so a little past shoulder length))

Caitlin finished her work and then plopped on a seat by the bar. She always had a mug before she left for the night, and this time she was considering two. She heard Thistledown call for some food and drink, and Caitlin winced inwardly. He always paid, but somehow always ended up gaining it back, whether from Tika or herself or even some other patron . . . mostly some other patron. She caught Tika's arm as she started past her.

"Watch out for Kenderfingers!" She smiled.

"I know, Cai'de, I know, but I'll let you know if I need any assistance." Tika smiled back.

Caitlin nodded, and Tika continued.

Cai'de . . .Caitlin often wondered how she came up with that name. 'Caitlin' just didn't sound right in this world. However, she felt that 'Cai'de' may have possibly been someone else. Someone had asked her once how 'Thorn' was, and Caitlin was forced to reply she hadn't known any, to which the interragator said "That bad, eh?" Caitlin shook her head and took a large gulp from her mug. "I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Ayasare lurked ouytside the Inn of the Last Home. She was unsure whether she should go in- her disguise was not holding up too well nowadays, ever since the gods had fled Krynn. Yet, she was intrigued as to who this girl, with her strange clothing and stranger posessions was. And there was always the chance someone might see her for what she was. Sighing, her gaze went back to her reflection in a small bowl of water. For some strange reason, Ayasare was not able to see herself as she was supposed to look like- her magic did not affect her sight. Instead of a young black-haired woman with green eyes, a strange creature stared back at her. True her eyes were green, but they were slitted like a cat's and set in a face covered with gleaming scales of bronze. She was from a long-lost race somewhat resembling the draconians- but rather than hatching from the eggs of metallic dragons, they were hatched from the eggs of others of their race. She was a M'del warrior. She stood on two legs but looked like a slenderer, thinner version of an Aurak. A pair of dragon's wings, the green-gold of her scales blending with cream in color, fanned from her shoulders. Each web between the thin wing-fingers was decorated with three silver rings. Her disguise was little more than a magical projection, and she didn't want to lose it for fear people would think she was a bozak draconian.
Rising to her feet, Ayasare walked inside the Inn. Instead of a M'del, those that were human or humanoid would see her as a young lady, dressed in simple leather armor, a white shirt, green leggings and simple knee-high boots. As an added touch, she had added the pointed ears (hers were pointed naturally) and black decorations of a Kagonesti elf. With a wave, the shapeshifter smiled and said,
"Greetings! I am called Ayasare."

((OOC: So wait...the kender can read english? Okay if you say sooo...and actually Ontarys I can't stand watching pro Baseball...I was just trying to be disagreeable :)))

Stacey looked up at the tall grey robed man and realized slowly that he was talking to her. She shivered. This man wasn't nearly as happy as the kender and she immediatly knew who's company she prefered.

"N-n-no, sir, Thistledown isn't bothering me at all." Her voice shook and she flushed. She hated embarrassment and in an effort to regain her pride she stood and eyed the man. "I am Managerie. A pleasure to meet you." She gave a small, graceful flourish with one hand, pleased that such a greeting was appropriate. "Now if you'll excuse me..." She brushed past him and started towards Thistledown, who had her food, when a green eyed woman stepped in front of her. About to keel over from starvation, Stacey barely heard her greeting. "Hello...I'm Managerie...excuse me..."

The young woman hated potatoes up until that moment and after that day she would never again get enough of them. They tasted better than chocolate, which would have previously been impossible. She ate the whole plate in a few seconds, then looked up to see the grey robe and green-eyed woman watching her. She returned the look, challenging them to make something of it. Her expression, normally severe, was positively fierce when she wanted it to be. Her eyes widened though, when the image of the green eyed woman wavered for a second. Frowning, she turned to the kender.

"Thanks for the food...now how about those clothes?" She followed the grinning kender outside, leaving the man and woman to wonder what mystery they had just lost.

((OOC: heh. Cubs...that is funny. :) Okay it is now two months later...))

If anyone had bothered to look out into the street, they might have noticed the emergence of a stranger from a small wooden house at the end of town. Truth be told, though, the people of Solace were used to strangers and therefore didn't look. Though if they had known what they were missing they would have regretted it. The woman that stepped out of the out-of-the-way house was exceptionally beautiful and exceptionally strange. She walked with a strange gait, stepping toe to heel and moving with grace. Even more strange was her expression. Shadowed and severe, it was none the less beautiful and held a casual confidence unlike anything anyone had ever really seen before.

A second glance would have dislodged everything the onlooker had just thought. This girl was the same as the next, though more beautiful then most and with perhaps a touch of elven blood was what added the grace to her steps.

Dressed in soft leather tinged with green, in the style of Qualinesti rangers, Stacey walked slowly down the street, lost in her thoughts. They were, of course, in English and always would be. That much she had promised herself. But almost all words were in Common, now, except for the occasional curse, which was an impossible habit to break. She had worked hard over the last 2 months, learning as much as she could from her kender companion and eventually accepting her situation with professional detachment. She hadn't left the house since that first day, prefering to wait till she would no longer draw so much attention, but the kender had disapeared and she was out of food. Turning a few small coins in her hand, Stacey walked into the Inn of the Last Home and sat down. Few patrons graced the large tavern as it was early in the day.

Stacey sighed and waited for someone to come and take her order. She was in no hurry but waiting was always hard for the young human and after a while she began to tap her long fingernails on the hard wood table. A few more minutes passed and Stacey began to hum. It had been forever since she had sung, something that had been a big habit back home...home...she stopped humming, only then recognizing the theme to the Patriot and decided to sing.

"Come on...bbaaaaby don't ya wanna go...doododilidooodoodobbeddoo...come ooooooon...baby don't ya wanna goooo...doodoodilidoodoodobbeedoo..back to that same old plaaaccceee...sweet home..."

Stacey cut off abruptly as she sensed the waitress entering the tavern. She didn't like to sing in front of people. The girl's eyes were wide and Stacey wondered if her singing was really that bad. The girl stared for a long moment and then shook her head as if in disbelief. Suddenly no longer hungry, Stacey rose and left the tavern. She stepped into the streets and pulled up her hood. She recalled the look the girl had given her and shivered.

"What the hell...??"

Stacey gasped as she collided with a man walking through town. She gasped again when she realized she recognized him. This was the same man that had offered to get Thistledown thrown out of the Inn!! Blushing furiously she muttered, "Excuse me..." forgetting to add a Krynnish accent to her words. She pulled her hood back up in a moment of panic, and hoped that the man wouldn't return her recognition. Feeling the antisocial genes she had inhereited from her father kick in, Stacey brushed past him and walked away quickly, not wanting any sort of confrontation. But the road was long and odds were the momentarily stunned man wouldn't let her go that easily...

Lots of people got drunk. Lots of people got drunk at the Inn of the Last Home. Lots of people got drunk at the Innof the Last Home and sang. But no one -- absolutely NO ONE -- sang Patriot. Though Caitlin was not an expert at much else besides classical music and waiting tables, she could tell that this was no Krynnish song. She could feel eyes boring into her back, though if they were real or imagined, the young human couldn't tell. She practically ran the last few yards and nearly tripped over a table that had been moved into the living room. On it was a hastly scribled note.

"Dear Managerie, I am leaving. It's not that I don't like you, I really do and I wanted to teach you how to pick locks...my Uncle taught me to pick locks and spring traps, did I ever tell you that story, it's really interesting, you see I was stuck in this hole, and the hole was bolted shut, it was a great adventure..."

Stacey skimmed the rest of the note. It went on for some time. At the bottom it said "I'll see you when I get back --Thistledown". Stacey smiled sadly. But the smile was short lived as she tensed unexpectidly. There was someone else in the house. She could hear them breathing softly.

Stac spunned suddenly. A startled woman stood behind her, half in the house and half out.

"Who are you??" Stacey demanded.

In the small entrance room to the cottage Stacey and Thisstledown had been sharing, there stood a hooded figure.

Who are you??" Stacey demanded

As the black velvet hood was raised, pulled back, and dropped, it revealed a slender, dark haired woman.
"My apologies for the intrusion. My name is Jadalyn. I'm interested in speaking with you. Is now convinient? Or perhaps we could meet for dinner?

Stacey stared at Jadalyn. If she wasn't mistaken this woman was a mage! Of all the things Thistldown had told her about this strange world of Krynn, it had been magic that had caught her interest. Though she was still a skeptic (They had "magicians" on TV too), the chance to talk with someone who believed themselve to be capable of real magic...Stacey hide her excitement.

"I am Managerie and forgive me for being startled. People don't usually just walk into my home," her smile took away any insult that her words might have implied. "Now or later is fine...though if you are hungry I suggest we relocate to somewhere with food...as I have none here."

An older man walked into the inn wearing a brown trenchcoat. Long greying hair hung from his head. "Javert," Tika commented to herself then hurried to bring the Marshal some spiced potatoes. *It is good to be somewhere that you are wanted.* He thought to himself.

Caitlin watched Javert enter and Tika bring him his potatoes, once again missing the customary 10-15% tip her friend used to get working at a restraunt. She shook her head at this thought, wondering why all of a sudden, after two years of trying to forget, she was aflood of memories. She needed something to do. It was a quiet day so far in the tavern, and she and Tika took turns waiting.

"I'll get him the lager." Caitlin replied. "I need something to keep my mind busy." She took the stein over and set it on Javert's table. "Here you go!" She said.

Linearos entered the Inn with all his elven grace.
"Hmmmm...so this is Solace...It's not that bad, considering all the things the senate had to say about humans."
He drew his hood back, and met the stares that followed his movement. He knew why. He looked like a human, if he was covered by his cloak, but once the hood was off, he was an elf with his pointed ears and slanted eyes. Shrugging he went about his own buisness and the people in the room went back to theirs.
Yawning, he went up to the bar. A pudgy man seemed to be the ringleader of all the serving maids. The man seemed to smile at him, but the smile was quickly turned to curiosity by Linearos' dark purple eyes.
He ordered a plate of the nights special, counting out a steel coin.
He looked around the room. He noticed a black robed mage and looked at her curiously. Elven mages were always white, for even red was believed to be one step down from black.
Getting up he walked up to her, smiling, not only at her but at the pretty maid next to her.

((OOC: Okay, first I apologize. That damn pointer thingie is off and it said that there were no new messages so I didn't check...lousy...Second, I also have to say that I've been racking my brain trying to come up with a basic outline for this and...it isn't working. But you guys seem determined enough, so hopefully this won't die. Jade, you're doing great but you seem to be in a different tense then everyone else...but as I got a B in English this year (a B, dammit!) I don't really know what I'm talking about. :) Let's see...there were other questions...oh yeah. Age. I'm going to say this is in Solace during the 5 year "vacations" the companions went on. That's probably too specific...An age where I can use magic :)))

Stacey sat at the table and placed her hands between her knees. They were shaking with the usual excitement/nervousness that came with talking to people she really wanted to talk to. She hoped desperately that it wouldn't affect her voice but it usually didn't. Just made breathing a lot harder...

Stacey opened her mouth and promptly closed it as she saw Jadelyn was about to speak. Anxious to hear what the mage had to say, the young human leaned forward, then sat back as the black robe's words were lost in another greeting. Javert, obviously curious about the mage, came forward quickly. Stacey tried to answer him but that too was lost when yet another man walked up to the table and the room hushed.

[Oh I give up!] Stac thought, not at all distressed. She was content to sit back and observe how all these people interacted with each other. Her attention was caught, however, when the newest man was nearly run over by a serving girl, whom Stacey vaguely remembered as being a nice woman named Caitlin. The man twisted to avoid a collision and gave Stacey a clear view of his pointed ears.

Shocked, Stacey stared. An elf! She had heard of them, but never seen them and from what she could piece together from Thistledown's constant chatter, they were an intriquing, if somewhat arrogant, group.

"Interessant..." Stacey muttered, one of the few words she remembered from high school German.

Abruptly, Stacey's mood changed and she was no longer content to just sit back and watch. Standing, she caught everyone's attention.

"Hello, Javert. It is, indeed, good to see you again. This is my new friend, Jadelyn. We were about to discuss her interesting craft. You are welcome to join us," Smiling, she turned to the elf. "As are you, good sir. My name is St--Managerie."

It seemed now that the more was, in fact, the merrier...Stacey wanted to get as many opinions of magic as possible. Glancing at Caitlin, she waved to the girl and motioned that she should join them if she had the chance. Grinning nervously at her sudden audience, still shaking, Stacey sat down, hoping that the others, especially the elf, would follow suit. Good becomes ignorant.

Jadelyn couldn't believe her eyes. Now, not only did they have too much attention, but they had company, an ELF to boot! This was not going as planned at all. This was supposed to have been a simple mission to glean information about this strange girl, the order was to keep it as low profile as possible. "Now what should I do?" Jadelyn asked herself inside her head. "I can either follow Managerie's lead and just pretend we are here simply to enjoy eachother's fellowship, and perhaps perform the interview back at her home.... or should I work some questions into a conversation here?"
Jadelyn decided to go with a combination of the two.
"So Managerie. I never got a chance to ask you, what brings you to Solace?"

Stacey shifted nervously at Jadelyn's question. The elven male had yet to sit down or speak, even Jervert hadn't sat down yet.

"Um...well. After I was forced to leave my home, I was travelling and came upon Solace. It seemed like a nice place, nicer then most, so I stayed." Stacey winced as she realized how many more questions this simple statement brought up. Hoping Jadelyn wouldn't pursue this line of questioning, the human glanced around. Stacey took a sip of the drink Cai'de set before her. In the next few seconds two things happened simultaniously. First, Stacey gagged on the god-aweful tasting drink and second, she choked as Cai'de spoke words that obviously weren't in Common. Several people look up and at the young human as she continued to choke, including the two who had just entered.

Unable to breath, Stacey hacked up quite a bit of lung, all the while going over the words in the back of her mind.

[Let's see here..."nach" is after..."ich" well I obviously..."rechts"...we'll come back to that..."horte"...well "horen" is to listen...]

So intent on figuring out the words was Stacey, that her lack of air soon became just an annoyance and she sucked in a deep breath and held it. Silence decended over the Inn, as everyone seemed to be waiting for the human to breathe. The breath didn't come for an impossibly long time and several people started huffing, as if to show the girl how it was done.

Finally, Stacey let out her breath and forced herself to not start choking again. Fire raced through her chest and for a second, she thought she very well would die right there without ever finding out why Cai'de spoke German.

But that just wouldn't do.

Words exploded from her mouth, so fast that anyone who saw it coulda sworn she was part gnome.

Stacey looked around the table slowely from one person to another. Her first impulse was to laugh at Jadelyn's question. Chicago was famous for its lack of dialect, lack of any accent at all, making it, ironically, a recognized pattern of speech. But she saw no recognition in Jadelyn's eyes. There was, however, recognition in Javert's eyes, though Stacey could tell he didn't understand what he was asking. Cai'de, if that was her name, did understand and she was the one the amazed human turned to.

"I have absolutley no idea what you just said," she muttered. "I only took a little german and don't remember much of it...However, I can imagine you are worried about them..." she cast her gaze around the table again.

"My dog told me to tell you to thank your mom for last night, you no-good {censored}, {censored} -lickers..." she said loudly in English to all those seated at the table. Grining she turned to Cai'de, who looked astonished at her vulgarity. "I do believe that if they understood that, I'd be dead or dying right now..." Cai'de nodded. "Give me a minute, I want to find out more about these people...measure their reactions..." Stacey muttered, more to herself than to Cai'de.

Turning to Jadelyn and Javert, she switched to Common. "I learned this language at home. It is my native tounge. What about it, Javert?" she looked at him harshly.

Before Javert could speak, Stacey noticed that Cai'de was simply staring at her. Glancing around with her chocolate brown eyes, Stacey suddenly realized that she had forgotten her situation and that she was here, on a different world, in a different life. Her eyes went wide with astonishment and she began sputtering in English.

"O-o-o-oh my God!! I can't believe I just brushed you aside like that!!" she started talking fast again. "Whyareyouhere? Howdidyougethere? Doyouknowawayhome?? I'mfromChicago. You??" Stacey stared as Cai'de grabbed her arm. Why couldn't they talk here? These people obviously didn't know English! Cai'de started to drag her out of the Inn but was stopped by Otik. Seeing her distress, Stacey made a quick decision to practice her acting.

"Ohhh..." she moaned, leaning heavily on Cai'de arm. "Good sir...I pray you...let this woman take me home...I f-f-fear I will not m-m-make it..." she swooned, nearly dragging Cai'de to the floor and made gagging noises in the back of her throat. Otik looked up in alarm. He didn't want a mess on his floor after all...

Stacey peeked over Cai'de arm to see how the barkeep was reacting. She had never been much of an actor but as these people had no decent entertainment whatsoever, he was swallowing the lie. Even Javert looked concerned, though suspicious. Jadelyn saw through the whole thing, being a mage and having seen many illiusions. Silently thanking every good actor she could think of, she nudged Cai'de to the door.

"Call them off. We need to speak alone." She said. "I've been here two years by myself, please humor me."

Caitlin didn't really know why she was being so harsh, she was so excited to finally find someone else when she thought all hope gone, but for some reason she was rather distressed at the same time. Perhaps its because she remembers the opposition and persecution she met when she first arrived. She hadn't been in Solace, but had eventually been driven there, where she finally met up with Tika. No one knew about her former life.

With a sudden, decisive gentalness, she leaned forward and hugged Stacey. "You don't know how hard it's been . . .for two years! I'm from Chicago as well! Come on, lets go to my house. Stacey glanced around Cai'de's kitchen. It reminded her strongly of the time she had spent at the Renessaince Faire with her best friend, Nichole. She blinked. She would not cry now, not even with a picture of her lost friends so fresh in her mind.

She focused instead on Cai'de's question.

"Um...well...that's a pretty difficult question. I remember walking home from school with Brian and Steve...that day was hilarious...anyway, we parted ways at my block and then...then..." she paused and frowned. She had never had a great memory. Her mind didn't remember events or specific things unless she was able to logically recreate whatever she was trying to remember. It was a pain in the ass, now moreso then ever.

"After that, everything's hazy...I was in this town and I remember this little man...no, he must have been a dwarf! And someone yelled at me...and then I was walking on the road towards Solace."

A memory flashed, the kind farmer telling her about the elves, but for some reason, she didn't say this.

"It couldn't have been that long ago...the season is the same. Though I s'pose if we've traveled across dimensions or into a parallel universe that's hardly conclusive." she frowned again. "We couldn't have fallen into a black hole...maybe a microwormhole...though those are highly theoretical." she looked up and laughed. "Listen to me, as if I know what I'm talking about...just wanting to know Quantum Physics doesn't get you much closer to knowing it."

She sighed. Another dream. This was a dream. It was what she had always wanted. Always dreamed about. Magic, adventure, heros...if Thistledown's stories had even been 1% true, this place had such things. Did she really want to leave? She shook her head and suddenly wanted to scream.

Stacey swallowed the scream, though. It wasn't worth it. Not now. Later when she was alone. She turned back to Cai'de. "How 'bout you? How long ya been here?"Good becomes ignorant.

"Two years in a fortnight." Caitlin laughed. "I remember my appearance here was rather hazy, too. I had been going to ask my professor a question about secondary dominants, when I suddenly felt dizzy. Well, I closed my eyes and when I opened them I was on a long road, feeling rather crappy. I walked for a while, periodically stopping to rest and sleeping on the side of the road and I finally reached a small town. Don't even remember what it's called. Anyway, I, being the dunce I was, explained to them everything from the start, showing them my wallet, the contents of my bookbag, and such. There was a picture of a friend and I in my wallet from one of our concerts where we're both wearing the typical black concert-outfit dresses, and they reacted to that the most; saying I was sent by their dark god or something. As a result I was basically driven from the city. For a while I just wandered, off any particular path or road, and finally came here. Now, I've never stolen anything in my life, but at that moment I was desperate. I was wary about my appearance and wasn't sure if anyone else knew about my presence, so I stole some clothes. I went to the tavern and inquired about a job, and ended up where I am now. I've been able to adapt pretty well, and Tika's helped me a lot. I haven't told her anything, though, I haven't told anyone since I got to Solace . . ." She sighed. "The thing is, the longer I'm here the more home-like it feels, but part of me still wants to go back."

Jadalyn tried to listen to the pair in the kitchen with magick, but the language they were speaking would not be translated. "They are definitley speaking a language from a different world" she said, as much to herself as to Javert. He nodded looking distracted.... Jadalyn leaned closer to the door trying to catch anything familiar.

Stacey took a moment to digest Cai'de's words. Two years...it certainly wouldn't have been enough for Stac to start calling any place home...especially if she were working in a bar and living in medival conditions...but then there was the magic and fantasy-like quality that came into this, entering into the equation as an impossible variable. Equations...the human suddenly longed to be doing math homework...she loved the logical way that algebra always seem to work out...

But you've moved on from algebra...now all you do is trig and you hate trig... She sighed. It was all so confusing. She always wanted what she could not have, dreaming about fantasy and when living fantasy, dreaming about reality...and then there were the people! She pictured her best friends...Brian, the wittiest and funniest person she knew...Nichole, her twin in so many respects and yet an entirely different person who was a perfect compliment...Tina, the one she simply didn't understand but could talk to for hours nonetheless...Steve, the ignorant bastard whom she constantly faught with, fights that always ended with the two of them laughing hysterically...and then there was her parents and her brother...

But, she realized, the longer she stayed here, the more friends she would make and the more impossible it would be to choose...

[You don't have a choice yet so don't worry about it...] she thought, and it was truely the only thing that allowed her to keep her sanity in that moment. Decisions in general drove her mad and this one...

What about education? She missed math and physic and, God help her!, even chemistry. This world had no such things...no technology...no medicine...and yet magic and Gods made up for this lack.

Enough so to stay here?

Her internal struggle grew until she couldn't take it anymore. Rather than scream, as she usually did, she punched the wall next to the door. Somone on the other side jumped. Stacey shook her head and grinned despite her mood. Jadelyn, for Stac assumed it was she, was too curious for her own good.

Stacey turned back to Cai'de, a hopeless and frustrated look reflected in her chocolate brown eyes. "What are we to do?" she asked softly. Not waiting for an answer, for waiting would drive her over the edge, Stacey turned to the kitchen and tried in vain to remember how they had used water tension to get it to flow up in that one chem lab. She cursed herself for not paying more attention to that class, which provided more insight into Hell than any educational value, and started drawing and disregarding plans for a working water system in her head. Stacey glanced up at her words, pulling herself from her contemplation of CO2 gas and working stoves.

"Caitlin...makes sense..." she muttered. "Oh, and I trust no one as of right now, not even myself. This is way too much like the Matrix... But you can't learn anything if you hide in a corner..."

Feeling rather incoherant, Stacey burst through the kitchen door, once again scaring Jadelyn, who worked hard to compose herself. Stacey laughed, a sound that seemed to promise that it, as everything else so far in her life, would work out. Somehow. Mentally switching to Common, she turned to Jadelyn and Javert.

"Let's talk, shall we?" she looked at them hard with her piercing eyes, suddenly feeling back in her element. Talking about what she knew was a helluva lot easier than thinking about things she really knew nothing about. Impossible decisions disappeared as she focused on predicting their questions and formulating answers. Good becomes ignorant.

Trying to hold back her tears from when Managarie had punched the door, which in turn bumped her on the nose, Jadalyn tried to look as composed as she could - pretending she'd just been mentally surveying the room. As the door opened fully she brought her gaze back towards it, as if she hadn't even noticed the girls were gone.
"How was your Homecoming? I'm assuming you are from the same place? I'd love to hear about it - especially now that I get two opinions"
Jadalyn looked from Cai'de to Managarie questioningly (((is that a word? hehe))))

((OOC: Sure...pin it all on me!! :)))

Caitlin's living room filled with anticipation, the air itself seemed to lean forward so it could better hear an explanation of the impossible. Stacey cracked under the pressure, realizing that all eyes had turned to her and all minds were waiting for an explanation, and not just that but an explanation that made sense. How could she give such a thing, when she still wasn't convinced that this wasn't a simple dream and that reality wasn't only a pinch away?

Her hands began to shake and her body tensed. She ducked her head and tried to order her thoughts...only to realize a second later that such a thing was not going to happen. Might as well wing it she thought.

"Where to begin? Well, first I must tell you that this is complicated, though not impossibly so. This world, Krynn, is comparable to my own, called Earth, for many reasons. For instance, there was a time when we, too, had knights who rode into battle on the backs of mighty steeds, waving their battle sword and shouting for the death of the enemy. We, too, had kings and emperors, slaves and wars. Actually the latter we still have...wars, I mean...though it has changed much and become much more terrible. But anyway..." Stacey paused to try and get back on task.

"At some point in our history, all that changed. My world went from looking like yours to something that you could probably imagine...though your own interpretations would likely be wrong. The difference is beyond belief. Had I not known about my own world's history, I wouldn't have been able to find anything understandable about this world.

Why did my world change? I honestly don't know. It is possible that my universe has simply existed longer than yours and time brings change. Or a more probable answer to this question is the 3 main differences that I see between our worlds.

First, imagine a world with where the only sentient life (that we truely know of) is humans. No elves, no dwarves, no dragons. No magical self-aware plants or animals of any kind. Only humans, though we tend not to think of ourselves that way. A find example of our "condition" is the elves. Split into seperate groups, any elf will mentally seperate themselves from another. A Qualinesti will see a Silvanesti not as another elf but as a Silvenesti cousin, at best. So is it with us, though we have far more groups. Some are at peace, some at war. Old grudges often ring true, though as you already know, humans are ever changing and so is our world. We are a persistance lot, surviving our many mistakes and in fact thriving greatly, if you take an optimistic view.

Second, though many might disagree with this, there is no magic that is proven to exist. None. People cannot walk around and say a bunch of strange words and make things happen. Everything we have, everything we do, is engineered to work that way, though obviously it sometimes fails. However, this is not to say we know everything. Magic as you know it does not exist, though there are many mysteries that mess with our minds.

What effect has this had on us? Well, it is my belief that we have a natural tendency to long for magic. It surfaces in many of our legends and myths, as well as many more modern dreams and movies (elaborate plays). The human imagination stretches to encompass magic, even if our abilities do not. In an effort to make up for that, as you would see it, we have developed a strong sense of technology. We are a very gnome-like society, except for the fact that our stuff works...most of the time...

The third main difference is one I know many would disagree with. But as there is noone here cept Caitlin who might argue, I feel safe in saying it. There are no gods in our world. I personally believe that to be literally true, but many others believe in one god or another, so I will settle for simply saying that, in comparison to Krynn, our gods are silent. Though many follow their "rules", for lack of a better term, they do not directly guide our actions. Thus they are left to open interpretation, which leads to conflicts and, of course, radicals who move ahead with life without any influence from any god at all.

So what is Earth like? It is better then here in many ways and worse in others. Speaking for my own country, we have less day to day violence (we don't carry around weapons...or at least we've not s'posed to) but when people do get violent, it is much worse then here. We, unfortuantly have moved beyond swords and onto much more horrible things." Stacey paused to take a breath and reflect. Glancing up suddenly, she wondered if Caitlin knew of the tragedy that had fallen on their nation. Saving the thought for later she started again, not even noticing if her audience was still listening.

"We also have a much higher education rate and people tend to know more things then here. We have an insatiable thirst for knowledge and know things about the world and nature that would astound you. Our living is also much different, having technology that makes our day to day lives seem very magical indeed compared to this place..." Breaking off, she looked around at the medival conditions. Sighing she looked at her companions. They were asleep!! Grinning, Stacey picked up a few objects from around Caitlin's living room and started lobbing them at her unconscious friends.

Stacey looked up sharply at Caitlin's question and met her eyes. She opened her mouth and then shut it again. She was saved when Javert spoke, allowing her to avoid the question.

"Alas, the question as to how I got here is the one I cannot answer...I honestly have no idea. My memories of the incident are hazy...one moment I was walking home with my friends...the next I was here." she shrugged, hiding her sorrow. "It is a question we both seek to answer. If I may though...I sense that you know more about my world then you let on...have there been others like me and Cait...Cai'de?" she shrugged again, dismissing her own question. "I'd be happy to answer any specific questions you have...I'm no expert on the last 50 years...I kinda stopped paying attention in history after World War II...which incidentally was about 50 years ago."

Jadalyn pondered for a few moments, listening to the tune Managarie was humming...
"The only person who would be able to do something like that FROM here would be quite a powerful mage... but who would bring someone here from your world out of the blue? The other option would be someone from your world sending you here. One of your scholars perhaps?" She tapped her nails on the arm of the chair as she thought, but it was a muffled sound since her hands were well within the long sleaves of her robe. "Could either of you tell me more details about your arrival in Krynn? Any bright lights, strange colors, or scents would indicate a spell.. If I could idintify that the conclave could begin researching what spell was used.
Otherwise, do any of you have common friends or enemies back home who may have sent you here?" Jadalyn noticed Managarie cringe at the word enemy. She thought to herself "Surely there must be some conflct at home.. she seems to avoid political talk..."

Stacey looked up, startled, at Jadelyn's last question. There was that impossible decision again, nawing at her soul...

She frowned. "It doesn't necessarily have to be people...there are unknown phenomena too..." she said, thinking absently of wormholes. "I have no enemies that I know of...I am an American though so..." she shook her head. "The odds of me being a target are...unlikely." she finished weakly.

Withdrawing into herself she began singing softly to herself. Javert thought for another moment, then began. "The story is a long one. It may be too long to tell now." (Someday I will start a thread that deals with Javert's quest, but not yet.) "But, I will try."

"When I was 8, my family had a fair sized farm in Solomnia. We were not of any nobel line, so I could not join the knighthood, but were still rather well off. That year we met, ..., a man. He spoke as you do, this, American you spoke of perhaps. He knew comman and Solomnic as well, and he befriended my father. He said he had a plan that would allow me to enter the knighthood. Over the next two years he visited often. He told my father that he had arranged a marriage for my older sister which would enter us into the nobility."

"When I was 10, he managed to trick my father into revealing our secret fortune, to be used as a dowry for my sister. Once my father had revealed the money, he revealed himself to us. He was a renegade magic user. He had already taken my sister away and hidden her somewhere. I stayed in the shadows, while I saw him slaughter my parents and take our fortune. I stayed there until I was sure he was gone, then buried my parents. I went back home, but there was nothing left. He had burned it to the ground and butchered the animals."

"On that day, I became a tracker. I have hunted this man for over 35 years now. I have had some leads, and have seen his lairs, but he has always escaped me. I know only that he still lives, as does my sister. I don't know how, but I know that someday I will find him, and make him pay for what he has done."

Javert realized that the others in the room had fallen silent as they listened to his tale. "I'm sorry. I don't know while I told you that except that hearing that language again, after all these years, has brought back so many memories. I don't want to get you stuck in my quest. But perhaps when I find him, it will give us some clues as to how you two got here as well."Free the flame and sear the grasses,

((OOC: Whoa!! Wait a minute...Caitlin pulled me into the kitchen and yet I'm still in the living room listening to javert's story...that is messed up. Okay, here's what I'm gunna do...))

Stacey looked up and forced herself to listen to something other then the song in her head. Jadelyn's eyes were wide and she seemed to be mulling over something. Caitlin, too, seemed on the verge of coming to some sort of conclusion. Javert, on the other hand, looked as if he was going to burst. Stacey frowned. He had something to say, that much was obvious. Opening her mouth to ask him to say his piece, the human choked on her words as Caitlin grabbed her arm and started pulling her towards the kitchen, asking in English what in all hell was going on.

Stacey pulled back, nearly knocking Caitlin from her feet. Blushing, she had a tendency to get passionate and then forget her own strength, Stacey held up a hand and turned back to Javert. Her eyes asked him to begin.

He did and all three women listened with wide eyes. The room hushed and the silence stretched till Stacey couldn't stand it anymore.

"I'm sorry we caused you to remember terrible memories..." she murmmered. "Unfortunatly, for all our 'progress', my world is still filled with much tragedy. I don't wish to compare my story to yours, but I feel that Cai'de has a right to know..."

Stacey drew a breath and waited. A solemn mood filled the air but it wouldn't last, Stacey thought, especially if Caitlin got as angry as she had when she had heard the news.

"First, Clinton is no longer president. His term ended and we had a pretty messed up election. It was between George Bush Jr. and Al Gore. Nice choices right? Well there was a big debate over it and they had to recount the votes like..." she paused, realizing once again she was avoiding the issue. "Anyway...about two months ago, Palastinian terrorists high-jacked 4 jets (flying machines) headed across country..." she lasped into memory, her voice taking on a strange tone. "I was in my second class and this girl came in and told us that the World Trade Center had been bombed. Of course, we didn't believe her, she wasn't even sure of it herself...but then a few minutes later they turned on the TV's in the school...we all watched in horror as smoke poured out of the top 20 stories of Tower 2...then a second plane appeared...it flew right into Tower 1 as we watched...the country was in an uproar, everyone had their TV's on...firefighters rushed into the buildings, trying to get the people out...the news shifted and we saw that the Pentagon had been likewise hit, taking out one side of it...but that wasn't the worst of it..."

She stopped and swallowed the emotions that rose in her throat. Glancing around, she could see she had their full attention, Cai'de's eyes wide with horror, Javert and Jadelyn looking slightly confused but horrified nonetheless...

"The scene shifted back to New York and we got our second shock for the day...the planes had been fueled to go cross country...the fires they created melted the support beams...both towers collasped within the hour..." she turned to Javert and Jadelyn. "The World Trade Center is a group of 7 buildings where large companies meet and do business...the two towers are 110 stories tall, some of the largest buildings in the world...and the Pentagon is the center of our nation's defense department...they blamed a group of terrorists lead by a man named Bin Laden. They think he's currently in Afganistan but they (the Afghans) refused to hand him over... so Bush decided to make an example of Afghanistan and show the world what we do with terrorists and those who harbor them...the fight was still going on when I left and...last I heard they were still looking for bodies...the count was 6,033 people dead in the Towers...all civilians..."

She choked and had to stop. Jadelyn said something she barely heard...a moment later Stacey realized she was asking about the 4th plane.

"It is thought that plane was headed for the White House, where our president lives, but the passengers manage to bring it down over Pennsylvania...with all hands lost..."

"Most of the world is outraged and on our side...but then they are some who want to make this a relgious thing, of course...and then there's the possibility of biochemical warfare...there's a disease being mailed to people but they don't think it comes from foreign terrorists..."

She fell silent and a deathly stillness decended over the room.

She was rather upset at first that Stacey never told her who finally won the election -- she herself would have voted for Gore -- but things changed drastically when she started talking about the terroist attack . . . Caitlin's mind told her it couldn't be true, but something deep inside her knew it was. She ran her hand through her hair, she turned and avoided the group. She stalked into the kitchen, slamming the doors behind her, where they soon heard a lot of noise, banging, crashing, glass breaking on a couple occasions, but no vocal yells, shouts, or screams. "I see now how advanced the technology of your world has become. I assume these TV's are a form of scrying device usable by many people. Such a loss. How many people are on your world? Stacey stared at the door to the kitchen. She could hear Caitlin's sobs and felt a strong sense of empathy.

"I got pretty mad too..." she muttered. "Went around for weeks thinking of different ways to punish terrorists..."

Turning she focused on Javert's questions, and found she was thankful for the distraction.

"6,000? Noo...that's all that is confirmed so far...the estimate was over 11,000..." her brown eyes flashed and she suddenly had the urge to throw something across the room. "A TV is an imaging device similar to scrying...I guess. Though the people watching don't exactly choose what to watch. Well, they do...but the choices are limited. Linearos had not moved from where he had met the human female. He stood there, awestruck as memories started to flow into his mind. It was her eyes. They were different, too wise. Linearos had only met one other person with such eyes. His father.
Linearos' father had been an archmage. A powerful one. The archmage had dedicated his life to travel, but Krynn had not been enough. Soon the mage had made his own spell, one that enabled him to the Abyss and back. But the power-hungry mage had struck a deal with Solinari, enabling him to travel to different worlds, not in the territory of Krynn's pantheon. But Linearos' father was an elf, so he had an extended life of travel..whereas this human was barely qualified as an adult!
Linearos fingered his sword, a sword that was one of the legacies given to Linearos from his father. The sword was made from a metal brought from a different world, given by Linearos' father, who called the metal 'titanium.' The other legacy was a glowing stone, which Linearos' father called 'his greatest achievement.'
He needed answers. Watching the human as she walked out, he silently followed her to a different house. Where he knocked on the door politely, waiting to be answered."What are the EVA's? They are what man made in his own image."-Ritsuko Akagi, Neon Genesis Evangelion

Stacey glanced up from her drawing, which despite the annoying the quill and annoying ink--she was used to pencil-- was turning out quite good. The soft knock sounded on the door again. Turning to Caitlin, who's eyes were still slightly red, Stacey gave a sympathetic look.

"There's someone at the door...can you just answer the door around here or do ya got to be worried about someone runnin' ya through?" she asked with a weak smile. Good becomes ignorant.

Looking down at his sword, he smiled and unbuckled it, handing it to her. Reaching to his side he unbuckled his armor, saying, "There, I am unarmed. Caitlin answered the door, surprising the elf beyond. They talked, both confused, Javert joined in, wearily ready to confront the stranger.

Stacey missed all of this. She was caught up in her drawing. It was almost finished, a detailed map of the her world, labeled in both English and Common--or at least, english words sounded out and then written in the Common alphabet--complete with state boarders and oceans and, of course, Chicago sitting right alongside Lake Michigan. But something was missing. Stacey puzzled at the drawing, thinking maybe it was the lack of shading that was prominent in all her art, but no...

The young human, still oblivious to what was happening around her, started to draw a simple figure in the corner near New Zealand. When she was done, she sat back and smiled. A small, yet elegant, dragon sat on the paper, its slender wings gracefully folded about its hidden body. It stared out at the onlooker with one slanted eye that conveyed a sense of intelligence. It was her seal, a symbol that was the first thing she saw in the morning and the last thing she saw when she fell asleep.

"A piece of home...yet born of this world..." she whispered.

A voice intruded on her memories, a strangely musical voice. Stacey looked up, startled. The elf from the Inn was standing in the doorway. Eyes wide, Stacey stood.

"What are you doing here?" She motioned for Caitlin to let him in.

Linearos entered, and gracefully stepped into the room with the young maid in an elven tunic.
Bowing graciously, he said, "Lady, salutations. I am Linearos from Qualinesti, city of elves. I have come out of curiousity..."

He glanced down at the map she had drawn. "And I suppose you know the reason for my curiousity."

Taking a seat next to her, he began to tell his story.
"My father was an elven archmage, of the highest rank. He obtained skill by travelling and gathering power. It was not long before he had travelled all of Krynn, from Istar under the sea, to far to the west, where minotaurs roam. If you know even little about mages, you know that many are ambitious. My father fell into that group. A few years before I was born, he had gathered so much power and knowledge, that he was able to go to the Abyss and back." he paused and sat back, closing his eyes in memory.

"But even so, he desired more, much more. He struck a deal with Solinari, the god of white magic and the silver moon that hangs in the night sky. The god gave him permission to travel to worlds outside of Krynn's pantheon. He travelled, and gained much more wisdom and power..."

"He brought back many items and gifts from other worlds. That sword I gave to your safekeeping was a legacy from my father. It is made from a metal not known to Krynn. I believe that you might recognize the name of it. It's called, if I can remember correctly, 'titanium.'""What are the EVA's? (OOC: A titanium sword. Hmmm. Nice and strong, but problematic. Have to be really sharp to be effective, because a lot of swords relied on their weight to do any damage. Not sure how well it would hold an edge, but probably pretty well.)

"It is a fine blade sir," Javert said. "You may enter, sir elf. Now about this map. This is truely a fine map. I suppose that Thistle gave you a good map of Ansalon. I see now how large your 'Earth' must be. By your scale, Ansalon would be about the size of this 'Australia' you have marked here." If you add things up, the elves wouldn't allow it. They banished my mother and father from both lands, but they couldn't banish me, for a reason I do not know."

He stared long and hard at his sword.
"You say that these two humans are from a different world? That is new news to me, and it explains a lot..."

Drawing his sword, he ran his finger along the sharp edge of the blade. "Evidently he might have traveled to the world of..Stacey..and Ca'itlin.."

Linearos sighed and reached out to a small bag he wore in his cloak.
"My father left me one other thing before he left..." He slowly took out a glowing rock wrapped in silk.

"Although I have no knowledge in magic, it is safe to say I know what it is when he calls it his 'greatest achievement.'"

"It will, no doubt open a portal to a different world. But, honestly I do not know how it works. I was hoping to find out about it by travelling to the Wayreth Tower of High Sorcery, but the enchanted forest would not let me through."

He dropped the stone into Stacey's hand.

"Precious? From what I've heard of your world from my father's old tales is that steel had been replaced with pieces of parchment!"

"Alas, the sword really must be valuable, for it took a very refined dwarven smith thirty years to actually molt the blade to the shape he wanted it to be. The hilt took him another fifty years after that!"

((OOC: Oh yeah...um. Ali is my last name. I like how it sounds and my real last name is boring. :)))

Stacey's mind was reeling. [Godshome...sounds like some kind of shampoo], she thought with an odd giggle, her eyes shining. Prone to self-analysis, she replayed her reaction in her head several times before coming to the conclusion that she was more excited than she had ever been in her life! Godshome, the High Tower of Sorcery... She was filled with an insatiable curiousity, and longed to see these places, to learn new ways...

Star Wars...that had been one of her fantasies. A universe full of strange beings, mystery...magic. And she was here! Possibilities spread out before her as clear as her map. A world to explore...

With a supreme effort, Stacey pulled herself from her excitment and answered Caitlin's question.

"No...it's not out...wait two years? The first episode is out, called the Phantom Menace. I thought it was okay but a lot of people thought it sucked...you know how critical people are. They tear up everything. The second episode is called Attack of the Clones or something...icky name right?

They're also making a Lord of the Rings movie...they made Jurassic Park 3, which was nice to look at but the plot was pretty weak. Same with the Final Fantasy movie. They made this movie called Shrek, making fun of Disney. It was hiiiilarious." she grinned at Caitlin. "They're also making a Harry Potter movie...I was going to go see it soon..." she said softly, losing some of her excitement.

She glanced down at the rock in her hand and then up at their elven companion. "Titanium is not as precious as it is rare...I don't remember what they use it for. Steel is still used a lot, though swords have definatly been replaced...with parchment? I wish. " she shared a look with Caitlin and knew they were both thinking about guns and bombs. Stacey tried to hide her excitement at Jadelyn's announcment and failed miserably. "I'll go get my stuff..." She turned to Caitlin as she headed out the door. "I really have no idea who's playing...who?" She blushed. "Actually, I never got around to reading the book...We'll go see it. You and me. When we get home." The young woman, suddenly looking like a kid in a candy store, grinned at Caitlin as if she were a lifelong playmate. Then she headed to her makeshift home.

As she entered, as always, Stacey thought of Thistledown. He had been gone for quite some time now, but she would always remember him as a best friend, someone who was there for her when she had first come, a time of great need. Remenants of him lay around the house, a map here, a pouch there...Stacey looked hard at the pouch. She had never noticed it before.

"First things first," she muttered. Walking to the bedroom she grabbed her coat and backpack. Her coat was a soft, almost velvet material, blue with black shoulders. The lining had been left at home but winter had yet to set in and the fall weather was perfect for her long but light jacket. She slipped it on and opened her backpack. Out tumbled her math book, a history book, lots of notebooks, her graphing calculator (which still had batteries), her cd player (whose batteries had been used up the first day), her cds, pens, pencils, a coupla tic tacs, her regular calculator (this one solar), car keys, some tape, Lord of the Rings, and a butterfly knife. Stacey stared. Before this day she had not looked in her backpack, as every time she tried she would cry so hard as to get an incredible headache. After a few killer migraines she had given up and convinced herself to forget about her stuff.

The butterfly knife...it was beautiful. Stainless steel, sharp blade. But they were illegal and she had certainly never owned one.

"Steve...if I could get to you right now, I'd kick your ass..." she chuckled and wondered if she would ever know why he put it in her bag. It hardly mattered though, as the knife was normal here, relativly speaking, and might come in useful. Flipping it open and closed as she had seen her friend do, she tucked the knife in her pocket. Deciding to save the rest of the pockets of her bag for later, it had an amazing amount of zippers and therefore, surprises, she started throwing supplies, as well as her cd player and cds, notebooks ect, into the backpack. Throwing it over her shoulder, she grabbed the graphing calc and headed back towards Caitlin's house, grabbing Thistledown's forgotten pouch on the way out. The bag's weight felt normal on her right shoulder, she never used both straps, and the familar navy blue created a feeling that said basically that it was all good.

Entering without knocking, she tossed the graphing calculator to Caitlin.

"Hit second alpha, second alpha, EXP. I've got Tetris, Mario, the line game, Solitare, and a bunch of other stuff on that thing." She sat on the floor and began to empty Thistledown's pouch.

"Allllllllriiiiight, that's about the only thing I found these things good for!" Caitlin laughed. She handed it back. "I still need to get ready." She replied. She was already wearing a red "Express" jacket, jeans, a pair of Sketchers, and had some dark goggles with aluminum frames pushed up on her head, but was in the process of filling a 'Kiplinger' backpack with supplies. She had an immense keychain collection, including the little blue monkey sucking his thumb. Hefting this on her back, she disappeared in the back room and emerged with a large cloth sack, inside which was something rather bulky. She gave an embarassed little smile, and tried to explaind . . . She'd added a few extra pouches around her belt, and had a rucksack over her back. Flushed with anticipation, Stacey looked around to make sure everyone was ready. They were all ready and all waiting...and the air...the silence was soft, the atmostphere one of comfortable conpanionship. If Stacey closed her eyes, she could almost feel at home, lounging at Steve's house, waiting for the next witty comment, usually laced with sexual innuendo, guarenteed to brighten her life. She could hear the laughter, feel the friendship, the excitment to come with their next discussion, next adventure...

Stacey took a deep breath and smiled at each of her new friends in turn. Looking at their bewildered expressions, she laughed as she had before, and was free once again. The nagging worries, the painfully impossible decision was gone, replaced by a sincere belief that it was, in fact, all good.

"Laughter is the key," she told her companions, matter-of-factly. They all frowned and glanced at one another, no doubt questioning her sanity.

Stacey Ali just laughed all the harder, barely hearing someone suggest they leave.

Caitlin looked at Stacey. That girl was delerious. Of course, she had only been here two months and everything from their own world was still fresh. Caitlin had gone through her things many times since she had been there, albeit after a hard three months in which she could hadly look at it without crying.

The question struck her mind now . . .did she even want to go? Since Stacey had appeared and talk of trying to find a way back was resureccted in Caitlin's mind, she was reminiscent of when she had first arrived, and of the world she had left behind. She had come to the conclusion that this was to be her new home, that this is where she belonged. She, of course missed things from her orignal life, playing in large orchestras, feature-length movies, her family and friends . . . but in two years she had become very well adapted mentally and physically to the new world. Then, she found she couldn't bring herself to leave dressed as she was, and so at the last minute, while making everyone wait for her, she changed back into her Krynnish garb and carried her oroginal outfit in another bag.

Linearos looked solemnly at them.

"I'm afraid we have no choice...it's we have to go through Qualinost, or we take the long way around and we're going to have to get through Thorbardin to do that. Thorbardin is the underground mountain fortress of the dwarves, " Linearos said, looking at a confused Caitlin and Stacey.
"They haven't opened their gate to anyone in years, no, centuries."

A swift glance from Jadalyn reminded him of the next thing he was going to say.
"But the Qualinesti have also closed off their forest to no other then their kin, and I wasn't exiled, so I am allowed to pass through...but I do not know how you will get even close to the Tower..."

He scratched his head and thought, "Damn, this is getting confusing."
A little voice in the back of his head told him, "It's only gonna get worse, with the one thing you didn't tell about the stone."

Linearos looked at Stacey and Caitlin studying the map with hopeful eyes.
"But I can't do that..." he muttered, "Dammit, I've raised their hopes too high..."

Rising, he said, "Jadalyn, a word."
He walked into the kitchen of the small house.

((OOC: Complications are good...Tolk, we can't both not want to go home!))

Stacey frowned as Linearos walked into the kitchen with Jade in tow. She turned to Caitlin.

"She's a mage...isn't there some kind of magical transport she can use? And why all the secrecy..."

Still frowning, but determined to not let it ruin her mood, Stacey pulled a mechanical pencil from her backpack and started adding the finishing touches and shading to her map. Her back tensed slightly and a moment later she spun in place violently.

"What?" Caitlin asked, looking up. Stacey recovered her balance with ease and sat back down, shaking her head.

"Felt like someone was looking over my shoulder..." she muttered, returning to her shading. A wisp of bright red caught the corner of her eye and the young human sat up quietly, not wanting Caitlin or the silent Javert to notice and think her crazy. Her brown eyes scanned the room.

Linearos nodded his approval to the mage.

"The stone, there are two things you don't know about it."

"The first thing, I said that my father was a mage, but to tell the truth, he was a renegade, so I disaprove of going to the towers to talk about it."

"The second thing is what I didn't want Stacey or Caitlin to know. I followed Stacey thinking she was only one person...but it seems that Caitlin was also with her."

He paused for a brief moment and said,

"Well, then What do you suggest Lineros!?" Jadalyn was beggining to get impatient. She was quite anxious to get back home. "If we don't go to the tower, where shall we go? And as far as the stone only transporting one person, perhaps we could study it further and find a way for it to do more, and we don't even know if they both want to go back. I say we head for the tower, discuss this with the girls, and maybe we can find a way to transport them IF they both want to go." Jadalyn closed her eyes, breathed deeply and tried to calm herself. Just as she'd calmed down and was preparing to apologize, a scream came from the other room. "I dunno, Javert. I really don't know...You'll have to take the way we go up with Jadelyn and Lineros. I don't know the region well enough..." she sighed.

"You said you were from Chicago . . .Where? I was going to DePaul University in Lincoln Park."

Stacey looked up and regarded Caitlin for a few seconds. "DePaul University..." it had been obvious Caitlin was older but... "I live right outside the downtown area...there's a little known neighborhood there...it's nice..." She broke off. She could picture her house, new, all white...

Jumping up, she started digging through her backpack. After a long moment, she found it. It was what she called her Destiny Picture. She and a group of friends had decided to go to one dance, they weren't really into those things, but they went to one anyway. A large portion of the group had been late, and as pictures had been taken right away, it only showed some of her friends. But these friends were her true friends...all the others had changed within the next year...

Caitlin took the picture from Stacey as she began to cry. Three girls stood in the back, two guys kneeling in front. One of the girls was obviously Stacey, wearing a long, form fitting green dress. The other two were both blonde, wearing blue, both smiling. One of the guys was tall and skinny, with bright blue eyes, glasses and golden hair. The other guy had a stupid grin and the look of a 13 year-old on his face, his brown hair messy.

"Only picture I have of us together..." she muttered. "And not a very good one at that..." she took the picture from Caitlin and showed it to Javert. Trying to keep her voice steady she pointed to each person. "This is me, obviously, this is Tina, Nichole, Steve and...Brian..." she finished softly. "My best friends..."

Wiping away her tears fiercly, she turned in the direction of the kitchen and yelled, "Whatever you're doing in there, hurry it the hell up!!"Good becomes ignorant.

Stacey stood outside, tapping her foot silently. After a few seconds, when people failed to come out off Caitlin's house, she started counting how long she could stand on the very tips of her toes, like ballarinas. Even through her gymshoes it hurt after a while.

"Damn! How do they do that...with no shoes..." She broke off as Jadelyn walked outside, followed closely by the rest of the companions. Linearos repeated his question about protection, having not realized before that she had left.

Protection... Stacey thought, crestfallen. She had planned to take fencing as soon as the opportunity had presented itself...and unfortunatly, it had yet to do so. She had taken archery for a few years but only learned still targets. I'm the indoors type, ya know, sitting on my computer all day...talking to people I've never meet...I hate most sports and physical labor...

But the young human said none of these things. Putting on an air of confidence, she smiled at Linearos and whipped out her butterfly knife in one fluid motion, twirling the blade into existance and snapping the handle shut. Thank you Steve... she thought before saying out loud:

"Yeah, I can take care of myself. Though I only have this..." A slightly hopeful look entered her chocolate eyes. Maybe he would give her a sword! Not that she could use it but...she vowed to buy a sword as soon as she found one that caught her eye and learn to use it. The real way, not like fencing...

Out of the corner of her eye, she caught Jadelyn raising an unconvinced eyebrow. Stacey's gaze met that of the mage's, daring her to say anything. Jadelyn took a step back and turned to argue about the best route. Stacey grinned and spun the gleaming steel knife back into her pocket. Only then did it occur to her that she might be killed. Not really one to fear death, she nonetheless worried about being the cause of one of her companion's demise. I'm not very good in a fight...unless I'm pissed off...

Satisfied, she turned back to the group and waded in. "Haven't you people decided yet?? Honestly! You have all of 3 and a half seconds to decide before I decide for you!"Good becomes ignorant.

He quickly made his way towards the stone smithy near the edge of the small town, muttering, "A knife?"

He had recognized the sign of the smithy, for he had seen the same symbol before. Flint Fireforge had come to Qualinesti a few years ago, right before Tanthalas had left to come to Solace.

Linearos walked into the stone hut. He gazed at all the fine weapons, but stopped as he saw the sword that looked slightly apart from the others.

He gingerly picked it up, and murmured, "It's human...Not dwarven."

"Of course it's not, what else do you expect from a human?"

Linearos whirled around, unsheathing the long elven dagger he hid in his cloak.
A dark human stood before him, soot and grime telling Linearos that this man was a smith.

Sheathing his dagger, he asked, "Who are you? And where's Flint?"

The man shrugged his shoulders and said, "I am Theros. Flint has been gone, and I've come to take his place."

Linearos nodded and said, "Well met Theros, I am Linearos."

He gazed around the room, saying, "Well Theros, I need a rapier for a young, untrained lady to defend herself with. Do you have one?"

Theros shook his head, and said, "I'm sorry friend, I'm sure you're meaning the long thin rapier?"

Linearos nodded.

"That was next on my list, and the steel is all ready. It will take a few hours, so why don't you just make yourself comforable and wait?"

Linearos nodded and sat down next down next to the forge, watching Theros work.
Then, as if remembering, he said, "Plate this over the blade, it will take a little longer, but I'll pay you extra, steel mixed with a few coins of gold if you prefer that."

He reached into his satchel and pulled out a lump of shiny metal, and threw it to Theros, who caught it.

"This metal seems to be stronger than steel...where did you get it?"

Linearos waved the question off, "It doesn't matter, it's the last lump of it's kind of metal Krynn will see in a long time to come."

Theros nodded and started his work again.

Linearos smiled to himself, thinking, "Wait'll Stacey hears her new weapon has some of her own world on it!"

Stacey pondered in silence as night fell. A fire was made and Linearos sat against a tree to take the first watch, while the others slept. But after a while even he fell to sleep and she was alone. Stacey smiled and stood quietly.

Star twinkled in the sky above. So many stars! She had always known of all those stars but with all the light pollution...and so it seemed her passion was here and there. She sighed softly, content under her stars. An energy as she had never known coursed through her body. She was alive on this night, more than any other.

Picking up her new rapier, the human held it as Javert had taught her. Twisting it through the air she developed a new grace with each ensuing movement. But after a while, trusting and parrying an invisible enemy grew tiresome. She wanted to feel the sword...

Silver glinted in moonlight, shining as so many heavenly bodies. Humming softly, Stacey began to dance. Her movements were graceful and skilled, like those of a cat, calculated and all her own. Faster and faster she danced...till the song ended and weariness overcame.

Sighing happily, Stacey sat and closed her eyes, her hand still on her sword. As she fell to sleep a memory came with a voice...

She sat still for a while, watching Jade read and wondering when the mage was going to notice she was awake. Suddenly she had an idea. Grabbing her bag loudly, Stacey stifled a grin as Jadelyn jumped.

Digging through her backpack, Stacey finally came upon her cd player. Pulling off the back, she pulled out one of the batteries. Jade raised an eyebrow.

"This is a...it contains power. You know, energy. It ran out. Think you can do something about that?"

Jade took the battery and studied it for a moment. "What do you want me to do with it?"

"It's a rechargable...shoot some lightning into it or something. Weak lightning though..." she said, suddenly remembering just how powerful lightning was. Jade shook her head and continued to study it. She did something that Stacey saw but couldn't fathom and then handed the battery back.

"Don't know if that did anything..." she said. Stacey stuck the battery back in the cd player and pressed power. Sweet music filled the headphones.

"Yes!" Stacey grinned and hugged Jade. The mage looked astonished. "What does that thing do?"

"You'll see. Time to wake up!" Turning the volumn on max and taking out the headphones, Stacey selected track 5 and hit play. Then she started to sing as loud as she could.

Still grinning, Stacey rushed over to where Caitlin was starting to wake up and switched to track 7. The theme from The Patriot began to play and Stacey waited to see the look on her friend's face.

Linearos woke up to the strange tune being played on an even stranger artifact.
"What is that thing?" he asked.
"My father never told me about things like that..."

Shaking his head, he slung his pack over his shoulder again, making sure his sword and dagger were there, both very valuable to him.

Taking a stick, he tried to rustle the fire again, with no such luck.
Picking up a bundle of firewood collected the evening before, he listened to Jadalyn.

Stacey stopped walking but made no move towards the companions. She knew she had to go north and she had for a while known why...but her cursed memory had struck once again and she had to take the time to order her thoughts.

On a certain level she felt guilty, as always. She was the manipulative type, able to twist almost any words into a winning argument. Determined to justify her thoughts, and not just for the purpose of winning, Stacey stood for what seemed to her as many moments, arranging her thoughts to a logical conclusion. Such was frustrating, a waste of time that could be corrected by a decent memory. Though if she would have asked, the companions would have said she thought about it for no more than a few seconds.

"What do we have to tell them?" she started slowly, gaining momentum and volumn with each word. "'Here, mastermage, I have this rock and I was wondering if you could boast it's power level so me and my friend can go home.' They're going to take one look at us and say, 'That's nice.'

We need to present them with more than an easily faked story and a rock. We don't even know if this rock can take us home or how it does so. The answer may be in the origin. I know I came from the north, and I think that if Caitlin ever remembers, she will realize that she too came south to Solace." Caitlin nodded slowly, a thoughtful look on her face.

"So here's what we do. We go north. Not all that far, as I did walk to Solace and I'm not one for long journeys. I remember the road even if not the starting point. We check it out, find some reason why I'm here, and bring that to the Tower of High Sorcery. It's a helluva lot better then just knocking on the front door and saying that we're lost and need them to find our way."

"And if we don't find anything?" the elf asked.

Stacey shrugged. "Then we've lost a few days. BUT we've also saved the mages some aggravation by checking it out first. And if we do find something..."

She stopped. Her mind was so clear but the words did not come. Logic was at an end and she seemed to have lost her manipulative edge. Or perhaps this was too important for mind games. "I just have this feeling that we will find something...something important." She sighed loudly, and ran her fingers through her black hair. Being overwhelmed was the worst feeling the young human had ever experienced and now that she looked around at this world...at Krynn...it was coming in full force.

She suddenly remembered that someone had once said that silence was perhaps the most powerful tool of persusion, properly used of course. Sitting down suddenly in the middle of the dusty road, she propped her head up on her hand and gave the companions a look that said plainly that she intended to go North, with or without them.Good becomes ignorant.

Stacey met Caitlin's eyes and nodded solemnly. Her chocolate eyes showed her graditude and relief.

She looked to the rest of the companions. Linearos looked stubborn as did Javert. Jadelyn's eyes, on the other hand, held a deep longing for getting to the Tower though she recognized, in the back of her mind, that it was perhaps her longing for home and not to find answers that drew her there. This Stacey could easily understand and when no one else was looking, she flashed the dark mage a quick smile.

In the backround, the Theme from Braveheart started to play and the elf looked up sharply. The music was beautiful, floating into their minds rather than their ears. He suddenly had a new appreciation for his father's travels and respect for any who could create any sounds so pure...

I know Par-Salian, who was a friend of my father before my father turned his back upon the counsel, and I'm sure Par-Salian will have not regarded my request as a children's story."

"But, as to going North, on a boat, I have no objection now. Jade? I think you should contact the tower and tell them that things are changed. I, for many reasons more than this, do not want a thousand mages breathing down my neck for making them wait for an appointment."

Stacey's lips tightened at the elf's remark. "Yes," she hissed. "We are going to Godshome. And then we are going to find some pink elephants with wings so maybe they can fly us home. And, THEN, I'm going to take an AK-47, ram it up your ass and pull the gd trigger!"

A stunned silence hit the companions. Jadelyn returned from her talk with the Conclave to a stunned elf, a confused Javert and Caitlin, who was trying not to giggle.

For her part, Stacey stood glaring at Linearos for a long moment. But then a thought struck her--His expression was exactly like Steve's!! Suddenly, the image of her rather young-looking friend, with a face like a 6th grader and that thunderstruck look of complete confusion imposed itself on her mind. The human burst out laughing.

Finally, Caitlin couldn't hold it in any longer either. She started laughing hysterically, much to the confusion of the Krynnish people.

Still laughing, Stacey set to the path, not caring who followed her.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

They walked along for the better part of a day, watching the shadows move from side to side. As they went, Stacey had a growing feeling of deja vu. Everything was so familiar but it was hazy, as if out of a dream.

Eventually, they passed the house of the kind farmer, who had been the first person the misplaced human had talked to. She made no mention of it, prefering that the elf stay with his uncomfortable lack of knowledge. She made a show, every hour or so, of looking around confused and then secretly laughing when he scowled. (:))

Towards the end of the day the memories became stranger. They took on a surreal quality and Stacey stopped playing around. A quiet overtook the air and, though the sun was still in the sky, the atmosphere seemed to be saturated with black.

Finally a grove of tree came into view and Stacey stopped. She shuddered suddenly, startling the group.

"There," she whispered. The companions gasped in sync and then fell into silence.

((OOC: What is with you and trying to get to the damn Conclave? :P))

Stacey moaned. Fog clouded her thoughts and filled her eyes...she almost never had this much trouble waking up. Struggling, she sat up and looked around. Linearos sat in a corner, practically yelling at some guy. When did we get here... She stared, confused. They seemed to be in some kind of tavern...

The fog!! Her dreams had been real...they had been standing before the forest and the fog had come...and she had fallen asleep...where was everyone else then?

"Par-Salian...Do you have means of contacting him right now?" Linearos demanded.

"Of course! I'm one of the official schoolmasters! What did you expect of me!" the man said, looking rather annoyed with the elf.

Par-Salian... Stacey thought, trying to force herself to recall where she had heard that name. Of course! Jadelyn had mentioned him...and Linearos...the Head of the Conclave...

Stacey frowned. "Like hell," she muttered, quietly standing and slipping out the door while the elf tried to convince the disgruntle mage to contact the Conclave now.

She walked for a few moments and then broke into a slight run. She covered good distance, using her long legs to her advantage, and soon arrived at where the path and woods crossed. The companions were gone.

A slight wind kicked up and howling could be heard from within the thick of the trees. It wasn't human, whatever it was...a low, mourning sound that sent shivers down Stacey's spine. She forced herself to recall the dark nights back home when she had ventured outside without her friends, who were scared of...something. She hadn't been scared, finding the night rather peaceful...

But the woods were nothing like her home and not at all peaceful. Though it was midday, they seemed to cast off all light except that which made writhing shadows, that tease and danced hiding the horrors within them...

"An adventure," she said to herself, trying to laugh. "You've always wanted an adventure..."

Shaking herself mentally, Stacey started singing Say It Ain't So as loud as she could and walked into Darken Wood...

---------------------------------------------

Caitlin awoke in a dingy cavern, mold clinging to her hands and face. She sat up slowly, pushing off hard rock and started wiping the musty film and cobwebs from her skin frantically. Shuddering, she finally gave up after several moments and looked around.

Darkness invested the cave and it took a while for her human eyes to adjust. She was sitting in a corner, Jadelyn and Javert, unconscious and laying beside her, both covered in sticky webs. Stacey and Linearos were no where to be seen.

Moaning, she stood and took a few steps towards the center of the cavern. In response to her movements, something inside shifted. Startled, but curious, Caitlin took a few more steps forward and stopped. The thing shifted again and the human could now tell that it was huge. She reached forward, slowly moving her hand towards the mass before her...

Twin yellow lights flashed in the human's face and she gasped, throwing up her hands. The beams glared in her eyes, looking as enormous flashlights with solid black centers...

The light refected off the cavern walls, and after a few seconds the room was illuminated with soft yellow light. Caitlin forced her eyes to relax...

...and screamed. Yellow eyes peered back at her with a strange expression of amusment, one blue scaly eyebrow raising to the ceiling...

Stacey walked slowly through the forest, her brown eyes darting about, her hands shaking with a mixture of excitment and fear. Inky shadows crowded in on her from all sides, making it impossible to tell which way she was going. The thin dusty path had dissapeared long ago, an occurence that had lead to much searching and hysterics. Finally the human had given up being frantic as it gained nothing.

But her hands would not stop shaking.

She darted around trees, now, using more energy then she was used to and practicing making her footfalls as silent as possible. Usually light on her feet, Stacey felt as if she were making enough noise to scare a herd of charging rhinos crashing through dry underbrush. With each step, more eyes peered from out of the darkness--red eyes that always managed to be gone when she spun to get a decent look.

Time stretched till Stacey was sure she had been lost in the dark forest for days, if not months. She was suddenly very tried and so scared...feeling as a small child who wishes for nothing more then her mommy to tell her it's all going to be okay...

Sounds, silent sounds, whispered in her ears, telling of the horrors that await deeper into the darkness...hollow memories, devoid of light...happiness...floated in her mind, twisting her life into something distant and pointless...

"No!" she screamed abruptly, the sound echoing, taunting...

She sank to the moss-covered forest floor, sank into madness...red eyes blinked, staring through her, surrounding her even as she sought to hid behind a protective rock...cold fingers ran down her back...she couldn't breath...

Stacey threw her hands over her ears, trying to drown out the noise, the corruption...

"M'Lady."

Sensations vanished. The young woman lifted her head and looked into warm, gray eyes. A man stood before her, his long black hair braided down his back...

Not a man...

She gasped and he smiled. "M'lady, I am a centaur. I have been asked to escort thee to thy destination." Stacey stopped staring at the half-man long enough to glance around for the red eyes. The centaur shook his head. "Thou hast nothing to fear. The Undead will dare not touch thee."

Stacey rose to her feet and brush the dirt from her clothes. She did so slowly, stalling while her mind started working again.

"Why won't they touch me?" she asked suddenly, staring hard at the centaur. He frowned.

"Thou art protected by thy Red Lady," he said, looking puzzeled. Stacey didn't take the time to ponder these implications. Her friends were somewhere in this forest...and Linearos...had the elf come after her?

"You said that you would bring me anywhere I wish to go. I need to find my friends," she gave a brief description of them and then paused. "And...could you get another...centaur? I think an elven friend followed me in here but I'm not sure."

The centaur bowed and bent so she could climb onto his back. They took off through the forest, leaving red eyes behind.
