OOC: The timeline is the Fifth Age, after the Chaos Wars. IC: It was early morning, and the Khalkists were more dormant than usual, their smoke more a trickle than the usual fountain. As the scant rays of sun broke through the ever-present veil of smoke and bathed the mountains in a faint golden glow, Ayasare awoke from her lair within a smaller volcano. She opened first one gleaming eye, then the other, the lids gummy with soot and grime. She raised her spade-shaped head and looked up, high above her, to where a spot of sky could be seen at the entrance funnel. Ayasare was a Fire Serpent, the last of her kind. Like the Chaos dragons, she was made of blood and fire, an enormous snake whose eyes glowed like coals and whose scales were the color of cooled lava. A splendid crest of feathers, the colors of flame, rose in a sunburst pattern just behind her eyes. Her wings, too, were feathered, and could carry her effortlessly through the skies of Krynn. However, nowadays, she dared not even show her face outside her sanctuary. The dragons eradicated Chaos creatures, and though she was not one of them, she certainly resembled one, and she doubted if the mighty denizens of the sky would ask her species name before they killed her. "Still," she mused, "who would know? I haven't seen a dragon around here in ages- surely one quick flight wouldn't hurt." With this, she spread her impressive wings and uncoiled to her full two hundred foot length. She tensed, then began to beat the mighty appendages, stirring clouds of dust and volcanic ash into the air. A few minutes later, the fiery serpent arched from the funnel of the mountain and laboriously climbed over the hanging smoke-clouds. Raising her head to the sky, she let out a high roar, which sounded something like a kettle boiling over. The roar exposed her huge ivory-colored fangs, each longer than a man's arm, and her obsidian-colored tongue. As she flew farther and farther from the safety of her mountains, Ayasare never noticed that she was flying over woods and mountains that did not smoke. She did not notice that she had flown too far- and was now in the realm of dragons and men, where she stood out like a black dragon in a snowdrift...

"Shlafie? SHLAFIE!!" Kiri-Koli roared trying to locate her ever elusive master. "Fine be that way, I didn't want to learn today anyway..." she muttered pulling her long silver robes closer to her slim body. Glancing around the forest with startlingly blue eyes she wondered what to do now. She toyed with the idea of scrying on her younger brother but dismissed it as a waste of her time.

Suddenly she wanted to fly. she called mentally then waited. After a long moment a rush of golden wings entered her vision and a large Griffon landed gracefully beside her.

Smiling, Kiri climbed atop its large back and said,"I'm bored. Aren't you bored?" The griffon, Kiri's best friend, nodded and took off into the air.

There was nothing Kiri-Koli liked better than flying. Wind rushed through her black hair, stinging her emerald eyes. Together the two friends left the ground, and life, behind. Kiri screamed in pure joy as L'Nakia banked left almost throwing his passenger into thin air. Kiri-Koli opened her mouth to shout her happiness to the world only the choke on her words as a large red figure filled her view.

Too late the griffon turned and both beast and rider were thrown into empty space. Kiri twisted as she fell, trying to remember some spell that would save her life but her mind was too shocked to register anything but the awesome specticle before her. It was bigger than anything Kiri had ever seen before, resembling a snake but with feathered wings. For a long moment she just stared, her rapid plunge not entering into her mind but then she again twisted uncontrollably and the ground came into view. With a silent prayer, Kiri blacked out...

Ayasare hissed in surprise and alarm as the girl and gryphon appeared before her, as if from nowhere, She twisted her body to the side, backwinging frantically, trying to avoid a head-on collision. However, the end of her feathered tail caught the beast and rider a glancing blow- but the impact threw them off to the side. As the Fire Serpent hovered, watching in surprise, the girl tumbled downward, into the trees with a crash. Of the gryphon, there was at first no sign. Then she saw it, spiraling slowly down to land by the girl's near-hidden forem. For a long moment, Ayasare debated what to do. Then with a sigh, she half-furled her wings and dipped down to the trees where Kiri-Koli lay. The trees' leaves curled up and the bark hissed and popped when her feathers touched them, but there seemd to be no danger of a forest fire. After a close inspection of the young human, Ayasare decided that she was not dead- merely unconcious. The creature once more took to the air, using her body as a living signal, hoping to attract attention.

Kiri-Koli groaned. Her head felt as if a million dwarfen smiths were banging thier hammers on it. She sat up slowly, trying not to give into the dizzy feeling that threatened to put her under again.

She didn't understand why she had survived her long fall. Sensing Pan in front of her, she looked up and forced her blue eyes to focus. Her griffon friend stood before her in a protective stance. Kiri frowned. Protect her?

She looked beyond the golden beast and then screamed at the large dragon-like figure that hung in the air, beating its huge wings. Reaching forward, a movement that sent her head spinning, she grabbed at the griffon's leg trying to get her friend to fly away and save himself. she thought at him. The griffon took off and mercifully the fire dragon? let him go. Kiri took a steading breath and pulled her magic around her though she had no hope of defeating this...thing. She stood shakily and waited to die.

Ayasare chanced a look down at the girl as her griffon flew away. She was pale and shaking, and generally looked as though she expected the Fire Serpent to eat her. Well, if Ayasare was hungry that might indeed be her fate, but she had eaten only a few weeks ago, and her kind was able to go up to three months without eating. The serpent 's wings were beginning to tire from all that flying, so she began to circle, catching a warm updraft. As she glided in a slow, leisurely spiral, she craned her neck down to watch the human. She was curious -she'd had next to no contact with the outside world ever since the Chaos War ended- and wanted to see what this tiny creature would do. Casting a quick glance around for any sign of danger, the serpent slowly began to dip down, back towards the forest. Her feathers crackled in the wind as she lost altitude, their firey colors endlessly changing, shifting from gold to red, then to white or blue and back again. As she carefully settled herself on the ground a respectful distance away (she didn't want to frighten Kiri-Koli more than she already had) and quietly observed. She raised her sunburst crest over her head so that it stood out like a crown, and coiled up. She wondered if she should speak to the girl...

starlite4774
09/22/2001 6:58 PM

Kiri-Koli watched as the great creature circled above her, overcome by it's sheer beauty. She decided that if it was going to eat her it would have done so already and so she relaxed slightly.

Every movement was agony. She wondered how long it would take for T'Pania to come back with a thoroughly panicked Majie on her back. Kiri laughed aloud at the thought of her elven master, a laugh that caused the fire creature to look at her curiously. Kiri returned the look for though she was well read and an apt learner she had never heard of or encountered such a creature as this. She wondered if it could speak...

Calming herself she heard again the sweet music of magic. Raising an invisible energy shield, she wondered what kind of magic this creature had. Her shield would protect her from fire but...Realizing it was stupid to worry about such things--whatever would happen would happen--she stepped towards the fire beast and smiled.

"Hello! I'm Kiri-Koli. Sorry about the whole flying thing. Maybe someday I'll learn to watch where i am going." She laughed at the perplexed look she got in response to her words and waited to see if it would speak.

Ayasare studied Kiri-Koli for a moment more. She had heard the human tongue before, but it took her a moment to remember how to speak it. When she thought she had it right, she began to speak, her voice hissing but somewhat musical, like wind blowing through silver grass. "I am called Ayasare, a Fire Serpent, at your service." She dipped her head in a bow. "I am unfamiliar with this territory- I should have been watching where I was going. " Her head flattened into a triangle- her version of a smile. "I will not harm you, nor your griffon." She cocked her head to one side curiously. "What are you doing all the way out here? Aren't there dragons around?" She shuddered at the thought of dragons. "Or don't they bother you?"

starlite4774
09/22/2001 8:24 PM

Kiri-Koli stared at Ayasare, replaying the Fire Serpent's words over in her head. The creature's accent was thick and Kiri had never been good at languages but she decided she had got the gist of it. She noted that Ayasare had shuddered when she had asked about dragons. She mulled over this for a moment, wondering whether to reveal that they were quite safe from dragons here or to try and keep the serpent on edge.

No...Ayasare is too polite to lie to, she thought with a smile. Besides she believed in her own magic and had so far detected none from the fiery creature.

"This is the Valley of Vanished Moons. People of all races are called here by magic. We come to learn. The Valley is known to few and protected from dragons and the like by the..." She broke off suddenly as a chilling thought entered her head. "The shield! How did you...! By the lost gods!" Closing her eyes, she let her mind flow along the magic, felt it slipping away. She shuddered, suddenly very alone. "The shield has failed," she whispered. "The Stone of Temeras is dying..."

((OOC: Hello everybody. I'm bringing this ancient thread up from page 4 because Kiri-koli is my most developed character I have and I'd like to bring her a little farther. This was the first tread she was in.

Obviously, it died.

The creator disappear under mysterious circumstances. But I'm not going to let that stop me!!

The way this is going is, the Valley is going to be destroyed, there's a big battle and everyone dies!! Except for me. Mwhahaha.

I need someone to play Kiri's younger brother who "dies", disappears, goes away somehow. Preferable that person will play her brother again in Nightstalker II in their heartwrenchingly tragic/cliche reunion. :) If no one wants it, I'll do it.

Someone has to take over the Fireserpent thingie. Others can just be silverrobes that die.

I think I already have the bad guy.

I figure the only way this will be interesting is if I make a contest out of it. A gold star to the person who writes the best death!! :):P:)))"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and

But me, I don't think I have the power to do it. Maybe if I contacted him... no, I can't go back to him now, it's been far too long. I will have to see what I can do on my own.*

"Mwahahaha!" Horaxon laughed loudly, nearing the final mile to the Valley, the one they intended on destroying. Zimen tripped his apprentice, making him lang face first into a fire ant colony.

"Would you shut up, those blasted silver robes are smart." Zimen scolded harshly. "And stand up you ninny!"

"Master, I'm anxious, I always laugh when I'm anxious... and happy.... and sad.. okay I always laugh!" Horaxon shouted, then was clubbed with the staff yet again, not falling this time.

"Remember the importance and the homage we'll get from the queen, she'll be very... pleased with us for this." Zimen said, thinking about the form she used when visiting him, the seductress. Zimen being a normal man in his 40's and Horaxon being cruelly powerful for 21. they made a very evil team. Hoaxon had power, but not practice.

Jim knew he would not be able to protect the entire valley, but he might be able to help the village itself. Activating a large device in his house, he created a second shield within the first. It would not keep out all evil - he knew only magic could do that - but it did keep the dark queen from using magic on a massive scale. (OOC: Don't worry what it did, it will be gone by the end of the post.) The fireballs belted the shield, but vaporized on contact.

"That will hold the big stuff off for a little while." Jim said when the device was activated. "Now, let's see about getting some of you out of here while we can. Jim led some of the civilian populace of the village to a small pad, which they each stepped on in turn, then teleported to a new safe haven. Jim paused a moment when he felt Xym pass through his barrier. Xym was the master of Zimen and Horaxon, and was far more powerful than either. Jim left one of the villagers to manage the fleeing refuges, and went out into the street to find Xym.

Jim turned a corner and spotted Xym at the end of the street. Pulling out a small charm fro his pocket, he looks at it for a moment before putting it back in and stepping out into the street. "Xym!" He calls. "You are not welcome here. Leave this place now."

"But I just got here," Xym said slyly. "Why would I leave now?"

"Then I will force you out." Jim said calmly. He flings his coat to the ground, and sets his hand on a strange device at his waist. Weras Timesplit had researched magic to travel time and space, Jim had instead researched the physical theory of time and space travel. Each shared some of the other's knowledge, but their true expertice was devided between magic and science.

Jim gripped the revolver at his waist. He knew that he could have brought any device into this battle, but he liked the archaic feel of the old gun. It was also far easier to modify to suit his needs.

Xym firmly grasped his staff, and prepared for the draw.

Both drew their weapons, and fired off. Jim's gun shot true, ripping towards Xym, but Xym's staff was on target as well. A burst of lightning blew from the end of the staff to strike Jim in the chest. Jim flew backwards, but managed to stay standing.

Xym's magical shield managed to partialy deflect the shot, but Jim had modified his gun to prepare for this. Xym was thrown backwards by the bullet as it passed through his shoulder. It would not kill him outright, but he could feel the bullet work its poison on him.

Both reset their aim, and this time, Jim's shot went directly through Xym's heart. The shot cost him though. Xym's shot this time was a bolt of pure shadow energy. The last tore through Jim, knocking him against a wall.

The shot through Xym's heart worked quickly, a disruption wave spreading from it. As the ripple passed accross the body, it disrupted the bonds between the atoms of his body. The elements floated free on the wind, and in a few moments, Xym had desolved comepletely.

Jim lay against the wall panting. Blood poured from the hole in his chest, and he was coughing it as well. "Well, my brother, it seems we were both wrong. Niether magic nor science is stronger. They are both needed for the universe to exist." Jim drew the charm out of his pocket again. "Please, brother, come to these people. Do not let the dark queen take this village or the secret it holds. I'm sorry I failed, but at least I have slowed them down. Please forgive me, and hurry."

The charm fell from his hand, and with it, fell the shield.
