The clouds were getting darker as Selena came up on deck. "Storm'll be here soon" shouted the captain to her over his shoulder. "I think we can ride it out, though. No worries m'lady. The hands on this ship have all been through their share of storms." Selena nodded politely, even though his back was turned to her. He seemed to be talking more to himself than to her, anyway, she thought. She stepped over to the rail and breathed in the fresh air. She had just finished unpacking her things down below. The ship had started off about 3 hours ago from Flotsam. It would take a long while for the ship to reach Kalaman, where she would then walk to the fabled city of Palanthas. She could hardly wait. Especially since the boat seemed to flip her stomach every time it rocked and swayed. "Storm's coming from the West; we'll stay to the East" said the captain. "You should get a pretty good look at the Blood Sea of Istar." Selena's thoughts were broken at that statement. "You mean the sea that swallowed up the city of Istar during the Cataclysm?" she asked anxiously. The captain grunted and nodded, then smiled at her wide-eyed expression. "Never fails to impress 'em" he said just loud enough for her to hear.
Selena tried to focus her thoughts on the horizon instead of on the rocking and swaying of the ship. She thought she saw a white cloud coming from the east. But as she kept focusing on it, she realized that the cloud seemed to be moving, swaying just like the ship. "What's that?" she asked. The captain squinted in the dimming light toward the eastern horizon. "Why, it's a ship." The captain yanked a spy-glass from his belt. "Minitour" he said grimly. "I hope their not pirates." Selena started to laugh at this, thinking that he was teasing her, but she saw no trace of humour in the captain's countanance. She waited for his response.
"Well, we can't very well head into the storm. That would tear the ship from stern to mast. But if they show signs of hostility, we may have no choice." The storm clouds tumbled overhead. There was a sudden flash of lighting and an explosive thunder crash. The wind picked up, pushing the boat east. "Stay here" said the captain as he started shouting orders to the deck hands. Selena stood, not knowing what to do, as the rain started down and soaked her hair and clothes. The minitour boat was getting closer and she could hear shouting from it. Selena had heard that they came from lands far to the east. She wondered why they would deliberately head directly into a storm. Not likely for plundering, she supposed. The wind was now nearly enough to knock Selena down. She held onto the railing and tried to focus on something else. She had heard tales of sea elves living far below the Blood Sea of Istar. As waves started landing on the deck of the ship, she wondered if they could see this ship from below; if they would do anything to help if it sank, or just let them all drown. An enormous wave engulfed the ship. Everything went black.

Syk watched as her captain bellowed orders. The hands swept across the deck swifter than the raging wind as the storm firmed it's grip on the two ships.

"Syk, take five." The captain ordered. A simple request, she thought, as she and five other minotaurs inhabited a smaller boat which was lowered into the scoureged sea. She stood at the stearb, watching as the ship they followed as pitched to and fro as it tried to scramble away from them. An immense wave cleared the deck, however, and Syk watched as several people were pulled from it's surface. Feeling a slight pull of maternal instincts, Syk immediately reached into the dark depths and dragged out a girl who had been knocked unconcious. When they reached the tagreted ship, Syk slung the girl over her shoulder and thing climbed above, fighting against wind and rain and bolts of lightning that seemed to graze her black and white hairy coat. The six minotaurs, armed with their best scimitars and axes and maces, swarmed teh deck. Syk took the girl below where they gathered all the prisoners, and then returned to her comrades. They comandeered the ship, and then started the hardest task; following their parent ship from the storm.

"This storm is worse than Takhisis!" Syk's son, Rom, declared, yelling over the wind.

"We'll make it." Syk said matter of factly, maintaining a deathgrip on the wheel. "Go check up on the prisoners, there was a girl who was unconcious and the captain split his head, had it wrapped in a sheet last I remember."

"They're just humans . . ."
"They're bounty. They must be in prime condition when we arrive. Kaj would agree."
Rom sighed, and grudgingly obeyed his mother. He descended into the barracks and threw open the door. He stood int the doorway, framed by wood and screaming wind, his scimitar dripping with the clear blood of the clouds. After a moment, he closed the door and walked through, looking at all the prisoners with a measured glare."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

"No, you were yelling."

Selena slowly awoke from her dreamless sleep. She coughed up some water. Then the events leading up to the moment came back to her. She remembered the storm, and she could still feel the rocking of the ship, could still hear the captain shouting orders and the crew shouting replies. But this was not her ship. She was above water, so it wasn't likely the sea elves had rescued her. Yet this place looked, sounded and smelled different than her other ship. And these restaints definitely told her that wherever she was, she wasn't considered a welcomed guest. (Not very hospitible, she thought) Then, as a sillouette of a great beast came into view in the doorway, carrying a weapon, she remembered. (The minitours!! she thought) She gulped painfully. She had seen very few minitours in her time, and had heard of what may become of those unfortunate enough to find themselves their captive out at sea. She also remembered their tempers; once a friend of hers had taunted one and nearly got his topknot ripped out by the roots, however he was lucky enough to have some sleeping powder in his pouch... The minitour came nearer. (Perhaps if a relax and close my eyes, he'll think I'm asleep and won't bother me, or he'll think I'm dead and throw me overboard and I can swim to safety. Hmm...not likely, let's just hope he thinks I'm asleep; as interesting as it may be, I don't feel up to talking to a minitour right now.)
Selena closed her eyes and let her body go limp. I will bring justice to those who dare to oppress the kender race, for I am the kenderdefender, and with Fizban's divine help I will... Fizban? Rom 'attended' to the captain first, chaning his bandage. The minotaur cursed at the stupidity of it all, but obeyed his parent's orders. Upon finishing that task, he stood and continued, a deep growl registering in his frustrated throat. He came upon the girl, a kender to boot. Was this the one Syk had said was unconcious? He punched her in the back. Too bad she wasn't dead . . .Rom was getting sick of fish and stale bread, and he doubted Syk or Kaj would allow him one small morsel. He grunted, then turned and started to leave. Just as he reached the door, however, the boat pitched horrible starboard, causing all occupants to spill towards one side, pulling painfully on their chains. Rom was sent head over heels, lost grip of his scimitar, and rammed headfirst into the wall, causing him to lose conciousness with a pained grunt. Water seeped in from beneath the door.

The ship righted itself, but not for long; it was being assailed by wave avfter wave, the sides creaked and moaned beneath the pressure.

Above, Syk yelled madly to her crew. She was glad it was raining, they woulnd't be able to see the tears she shed as a result of Kaj being flung violently overboard by the angry wind."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

{Sighs} (I have to do this every time) Selena, surprising as it is, is not actually a kender. You can find her info in INTRODUCTIONS. She is a human born and raised in Kendermore...
____________________________________________________________
Selena's eyes flew open as the ship pitched forward, jerking violently on her chains. She saw the minitour hit the side of the ship head first, heard him grunt, and for a moment was concerned that he may get back up; from what she knew, a minitour who had just got a bump on the head wouldn't be a cheerful one. At least she was alright for the moment. However, when he woke up, she had a feeling he wouldn't be very happy. And she could barely feign unconsciousness when he punched her in the back before (which had left an awful bruise; she would have to tell him to be more gently, she was a human, not a minitour, after all, so he should maybe tap her on the shoulder next time...) She sat still, breathed shallow, and prayed to Fizban that this adventure would take a turn for the better. ooc; sorry about the misunderstanding! :-D

ic; With a tremendous growling yell, Rom stands, grabs his scimitar and slams it into a wood pillar holding the cieling up. He yanks it out with a frustrated jerk of the arm, spraying the prisoners with wooden splinters. Fuming, nostrals flaring, he takes a couple large strides towards Selena, and grabs her by the back of the neck. He was hungry, he had a headach, he was wet and just plain po'd. He stared into her face, the conflict of his supieriors' orders suddenly ringing through his head, the only thing causing him to pause. The boat continued to sway menacingly back and forth, causing the water that was gathering on the floor to slosh on either side, but Rom had steadied himself, groweling, staring hungrily at Selena."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Selena's eyes were as big as saucers as the minitour jerked her off her feet, her chains clanking noisily. (Gee, why's he gotta pick on me?) He sure looked angry, just as she had expected. When she got upset about something, a nice conversation seemed to calm her down. Besides, judging by the look in the minitour's eye, this might very well be the last conversation with one...
"Hi...{gag}...um, I'm Selena..." Selena tried to stick out her hand, but the chains were too restraining. Selena got no response to this, so she continued in a weak, choking voice:
"You got a pretty big bump on the head there. It's too bad that wave had to come along and make you stumble..." Selena continued to prattle on, gasping in shallow breaths frequently because of the minitour's tight grasp on her neck. She had learned (through much experience) that one of the best ways to dumbfound an enemy was to act nonchalant, comfortable, and equal around them, even when in an inferior position.

ooc; I had a great post all written up yesterday and the the computer crashed. :-(

ic; Rom's growl dissepated and his grip lessoned as his eyes reflected confusion. Then, he snarled; "You're right, I am hungry, and I will have something to eat . . ." But before he could make his next move, the door opened to anotherbullish figure who grunted some order or another, enough to make Rom drop Selena and leave ith a grunt.

Rom joined Syk on deck. "I want you to take over here, and I'll take the mother ship to see who's been following us." Syk said. The storm was lessening, but it was still dark enough to mask the ship in the distance.

"Where's Kaj?" Rom asked, annoyed that he couldn't take over instead.

"He fell overboard." Syk answered simply. Rom nodded, then took the wheel.

Once Syk reached the other shi[p, she called one of the younger sailors over. "Rel, I want you to go keep an eye on Rom, I don't trust him with those prisoners."

"I will." Rel replied. She took her things in the small boat and started toward the captured ship, where she could see Rom glaring at her. He knew something was up. She boarded quickly, told him she was there for her medical knowledge, and disappeared into the barracks with the prisoners. She hoped she woulnd't have to see him until they reached Mithra . . ."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Selena was relieved that the minitour was going to have something to eat (maybe then he wouldn't be so grouchy), but she didn't like his tone. Besides, she was getting hungry too. Though she had swallowed some seawater while she was unconscious(sp?). Then she saw the other figure in the doorway. She was just about to say hello and explain all that had happened (maybe this minitour was nicer...they sure are nasty when they're hungry), when it said something. But just as she strained to hear what was said, she was dropped to the floor onto the splinters that had scattered when Rom got up angrily earlier. She tried to catch her balance, but she got tangled in her restraints, and the slightest movement sent her crashing, backwards, headfirst, into the side of the ship. This time she wished she could be knocked out when the stars started shooting before her eyes and the ringing started in her ears. She lay on her side and waited for the pain to subside. When she could see, she reminded herself once again to tell someone that this particular minitour could work on his manners... Then another minitour walked in. Finally, she thought, and stood up.
"Hello" she said, though the pain came back to her head and made her wince, " my name is Selena Arrowbaum." This time she was ready. " I'd offer to shake your hand but these chains aren't long enough...I'm pleased to meet you...say, could you tell me where I am?"
(Uh, oh. I stood up too soon, she thought.) The next thing she knew, everything went kind of dim and she was on the floor again. She smiled sheepishly at the just newly arrived minitour. Rel was not in with the prisoners two minutes when one, the girl, needed assitance. Running up to her and unchaining her, Rel opened her medical bag.

"Hello, Selena . . ." She said, her common sounding crude and heavy, "I Rel, I help." She fumbled with some gauze, a look of determination on her face. "We don't . . .usually . . .usually help . . .I know little of forgotten trade among my people." She explained harshly, looking herself only more confused. "I learn for Syk, for you . . ." Selena blinked confusedly at the minitours crude speech. She couldn't understand the common very well. Forgotten trade? Who was Syk? Hmm...must be the minitour who was in earlier...what did she need to learn? So many questions. She would have to think it through and ask only the most important ones... Sometimes people got annoyed when she asked too many questions at once. She didn't want to annoy Rel, someone who was finally being nice to her.
"Thanks, that's a lot better" she said brightly, moving her scarred wrists that had been freed, though forgetting to offer to shake Rel's hand now. "What is this forgotten trade? Medicine? Where are we going? I heard someone say something about Mithra;I've never been there; no ship would take me there..." {Selena, forgetting to wait for answers to her questions, continues to prattles on until Rel stops her.} I will bring justice to those who dare to oppress the kender race, for I am the kenderdefender, and with Fizban's divine help I will... Rel had started to answer the medicine question, but then had to start thinking about the Mithra question, and in a moment she was staring at Selena very confusedly, her ear twitching. She had given up trying to understand, and patiently waited for the landslide to still itself. Now it was Selena's turn to be confused. She laughed nervously, looking around at the chains...
"There must be some mistake," she said, "you see, I am not a slave, I'm a passenger, in fact, I can show you the reciept for my voyage. I put it in my pouch here..."
Selena starts searching through her pouch which is still sopping wet from the sea.

Selena had to think for a few moments about what Rel's words meant. 'Until we caught your ship'. Caught? Hmm...so a group of minitours went out in the middle of the blood sea of Istar in the dead of a storm on the chance that there may be a ship with some likely slaves on it? She had to hand it to them, on that part, their luck was pretty good. Although, she was afraid hers wasn't. She thought back to when the male minitour punched her in the back. They were much stronger than humans; why did they need human slaves? She couldn't spend the rest of her life in the same place with someone telling her what to do all the time!
Uncharacteristically (especially for someone born and raised in Kendermore) she gets a blank expression on her face, and sits as if in a trance, not seeming to hear what is said to her or feel anything at all. (I think she's in shock or something...)

Rel cocked her head, waving her hand infront of Selena. "Don't worry," She went on, unsure whether or not Selena was listening. "I'm sure someone nice will purchase you. I would, butwe don't need slaves. We just sell them to various, usually human based, armies or whatnot, whoever has a need for slaves. We were actually sent out to follow your ship." She went on. "I didn't actually meet who it was, but Syk did. Maybe you can talk to her when we get back to shore . . ."

MEANWHILE . . .

It wasn't long before Syk's ship caught up to the mysterious ship in the pounding rain of the receeding storm. "Ahoy! Who goes there!" Came a human female's voice.

"Syk of the Rhok tu'raanj!" Syk answered gruffly. She could sense a pause in the other as the two shipscontinued to float towards each other. "Were you following us?" Syk continued.

"Stand down and hand over the prisoners, by order of the Solamnic Knights!" The woman continued.

Syk laughed. "I may not know much about the humans, but I do know that women do *not* serve the Solamnic Knights! An easy bluff to call, for sure!"

"Indeed, I am simply their messanger! I have a fleet onboard! Return the prisoners or prepare for battle!""I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Rel's words only slightly comforted Selena. Then she heard a commotion on a ship nearby. She wondered what it was. She tried to get up, but the chains around her legs wouldn't let her. "Prepare for battle!" Syk called to her crew. Rom growled. He wanted to fight, to rip human heads from their piddly human bodies, but he was stuck behind the wheel. Or was he? He grabbed the nearest minotaur, instructed him to hold it for a minute, then descended into the brig and grabbed Rel.

"Solamnic Attack." He told her in their language. "Syk wants you to take the wheel so I can fight." She waved goodbye to Selena as she was dragged up the stairs, leaving her crude med kit, which had a couple tools that would possibly serve as lockpicks. The door closed.

The ships sided each other and the minotaurs swarmed aboard."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Rel was a nice minotour and all, but Selena was glad to be alone for once. Well, even if there were the other prisoners there, at least there weren't any minitours. She looked around at the other prisoners. Most of them seemed dazed and confused. The captain was still unconscious, his crude bandage had long ago been soaked with blood. Selena avidly reached for the medical bag Rel had left behind. She sifted through it. She found a needle used for making stitches. She shuddered for a moment at the thought. Deftly, she used all her concentration on picking the locks on her legs. Finally she heard a satisfying [clink-clunk] and the chains were off. She set out to free the other prisoners, but none of them seemed too terribly enthusiastic about being set free. (They must either be in shock or be scared of the minotours coming back, she thought)
As for Selena, however, she needed a piece of the action. She stretched her legs and prepared to run. She slipped out of the doorway, past preoccupied minotours and jumped swiftly across to the captured ship that she had once been a passenger on. What she needed, she decided, was a weapon. She had left her whippik in her cabin... She decided to go down and get it, as well as the rest of her supplies, including the arrows that went with it. She made sure the coast was clear, hoping she wasn't seen by anyone, then went down into the cabin area. She found her own cabin, and grabbed her whippik from her pack. She slung a pouch over her shoulder and put in it several steel-tipped arrows, used for piercing tough hide and denting armor. (She wasn't exactly sure who she should fight, if anyone)

There was a yell and a commotion as a felled knight clattered down the stairs just outside the cabin's door. Following the body was Rom, sporting his scimitar. Framed by the doorway, he raised ready to decapitate the already dead body, when he glanced sidelong into the cabin and noticed Selena.

"Ah, you have a weapon, so you must want to fight, eh?" Dismissing the knight, he approached her, swinging the Scimitar back and forth . . ."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

OOC: I feel really stupid asking this, but what does a scimitar look like? I don't think I've ever heard of one...
___________________________________________________________ Selena laughed nervously. "{Gulp} what, this? a weapon? heh heh...." she said, backing up. She had to think of something quick. Aha! stand still and get killed by the minotour! Wait a minute... No, fight the minotour and get killed...tell the minotour she was fighting on his side(perhaps he would laugh himself to death, though his sense of humour wasn't too good... run and have the minotour smash the door down and get killed... well, at least it would buy her some time... Selena, while gripping her whippik like a spear instead of like a bow so as to stab with the end of it instead of shoot arrows with the loop on the top, ran into her cabin and shut and locked the door. She put all that she could in front of it as fast as she could. She knew he was gaining quickly. He had wanted to kill her from the start, now it looked like he might just get his way... She stood out of the range of the scimitar (OOC: what IS the range of a scimitar???) and stanced herself with the pointed end of her whippik facing the doorway. Even if she didn't stand a chance against the minotour, perhaps her determination and will to live would have an effect on his decision to kill her...though that didn't seem too likely. She just wished another wave would come and knock him out again like before. By the way, didn't she qualify as a damsel in distress? Where was one of those knights? What were they doing, anyway? Her thoughts wandered, but her look of determination remained. I will bring justice to those who dare to oppress the kender race, for I am the kenderdefender, and with Fizban's divine help I will... ooc; I'm pretty sure a scimitar is like a long, curved sword. Pretty wicked looking.

ig; Rom smirked as Selena hid herself. "Feisty one, I like that. Makes the game more fun!" He called to her. He approached the door, then began to hack it to pieces with the scimitar. Before he could get anything big enough for himself to fit through, however, he stopped. All Selena can see through the door is Rom turn quickly, then charge the opposite wall with his weapon raised, yelling. There was a thud, a grunt, and then the clatter of a smaller weapon. Steel clashed against steel. Through the hole in the door, Selena catches glimpses of the minotaur battling a young, quick footed knight. There's some more commotion, and then a defeated yell . . .the minotaur's! The knight appears in the hole in the door, another one behind him finishes Rom off.

"Come on then!" The knight said. "We've got some help to take you where it's safe! I'm Bronson!" He held his hand out to help her through the door."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Selena just knew she was done for when she heard the minotour coming after her. Then came the yell of the minotour as he was defeated by the knights. When the knight came to the doorway, she was trembling so bad that it took nearly all of he strength not to fall down. Then she remembered her dignity. She held her head up, and then grabbed her whippik right-side up. She considered giving the knight some sort of remark such as "I am no child; I can take care of myself" but then thought he might take her word for it and leave. So, without saying anything or taking the hand he offered her, she made her way throught the doorway.
She waited until she was through to introduce herself. "Selena Aroowbaum." She said and shook his hand heartily. She smiled, but her eyes reflected fear. "The minotaurs have been catching whatever ship they can, then selling the prisoners to a nearby dragon highlord, for quite a high price, I'm told. I'm pretty sure this ship is doomed, but we have a few metallic good dragons that will be willing to take you someplace safe on the mainland." Bronson explained. Meanwhile, his comrade had made sure that Rom wasn't rising, and tried his best to cover the hulking body with the small, thin curtains that hung over the porthole, this he did for Selena's sake.

"Where was your ship headed to originally?" He asked.

"Selena, this is my friend Eric." Bronson introduced. "We've little time for chit-chat, We still have to get up and get her out of danger." He had a firm grip on her hand, as if afraid that if they weren't connected, twenty minotaurs would burst through the floor and take her away."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

"No, you were yelling."

Selena gulped at the rementioning of slavery. She shuddered. "We were heading for Palanthas... then...the storm..." she blushed, for some reason her vocal chords seemed to be giving out and the room was swaying. She would have to ask someone about this some time... Maybe a spell had been cast on her.
She took his hand and followed him wherever he led her. Besides, she had never seen a dragon up close before. Bronson lead Selena up, holding her with one hand, his sword with his other. Eric followed. Bronson knew the girl was weak, weather from fear, fatigue, or whatnot, but he also knew she was strong . . . perhaps, though, she tried to come off as more than she actually was. He had to give her credit, though; she had come this far without fainting.

Chaos ensued the deck. Knights on the Minotaurs' ship, Minotaurs on the knights' ship, members of both sides dead (more knights than minotaurs) and great dragons of bronze and copper dipping in and out of the fray to capture whatever prisoners the knights could offer them. Suddenly grabbing Selena around the waist, Bronson ran to the stearn and lifted her to a passing copper.

"Sunstream! Here!" Bronson called.

"Bronson! She's the last!" Eric called, watching his friend's back. "We go after her!""I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Selena was just about to protest to the knight helping her onto the dragon, when she felt herself being lifted up into the air. She was a little too weak to struggle in protest, so she submitted to his grasp. She felt the rush of wind as the dragon swooped down and gently grabbed her outer clothes. Then it pulled its head back on placed her on its back. "Hold on tight," it warned her, so she held onto whatever she could find. She gasped as she saw the turmoil that was ensuing below her. It was a good thing she had her whippik. She fitted one of the steel tipped arrows into the loop. She shot it at a minotour who was just about to strike a knight with a scimitar. The knight had had his sword knocked out of his hand and was helpless. A pretty good shot, thought Selena, as she watched the arrow strike the minotour in the neck. A pretty nice shot indeed.
"Now...would be a...nice time...for...a nap." she said, yawning with fatigue, though she didn't know why she was suddenly tired. She lay her head down on the dragon's back, still holding on tight, and fell asleep. I will bring justice to those who dare to oppress the kender race, for I am the kenderdefender, and with Fizban's divine help I will... Fizban? Fizban, what are you doing?! Sunstream set down carefully on the shore outside of a monestary. Most of the dragons had been ordered to bring the rescued prisoners here and then return to offer further aid. A monk helped pull the sleeping Selena from her perch, and then Sunstream took off. Bronson's dragon, a young silver, landed shortly after Sunstream had left. Selena woke up groggily. How long had she been asleep? All she seemed to remember was being held prisoner by some minotours. Or was that all a dream? Then she realized a monk was helping to carry her. She blushed.
"That's alright" she said, and got up. Her balance wasn't so good after just waking up, so she stumbled around a lot, making herself blush even deeper crimson. Finally, she laughed at herself for making such a fool of herself. She must look drunk or something. Then she regained her composure and walked behind the monk to wherever he led her. The monk allowed Selena to move under her own power, yet stayed near her incase she fell as they made their way to the monestary. Then, however, he had to turn his attention to Bronson's yell. The knight approached them, nodded politely to Selena, and then put his arm around the monk's shoulder and lead him some ways off. Though intended to be out of eashot, Bronson is short of breath and his words carry;

"They're bringing one here. She's young, weaker than the others. She was piloting the mothership. An older female tried to save her, but we've got her. We're bringing her here for questioning. Do you have anyplace we could hold her?"

The monk's answer was quiet, and though now Selena can't hear what's going on, they seem to be arguing."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

"No, you were yelling."

OOC: Sorry if my writing isn't so good lately; I think I'm going through some kind of a slump or something...Have you ever been through one of those? I hope I get back up on my feet soon... Thanks for your patience!
____________________________________________________________
Selena leaned against the monestary wall and smiled contentedly. She heard the monk and the knight arguing. She yawned. They would work it out sooner or later, she thought as she slid down the wall and drowsed...
Her eyes flew open. Let's see, hadn't she heard Rom tell Rel to take over steering the mother ship? She gulped. Rel had been the only one who had been nice to her before the knights came; she couldn't let anything bad happen to her!
Selena got up clumsily and made her way as quietly as she could to where the monk and the knight were arguing. Apparently, the monk didn't want a minotour in or even near the monestary {OOC: I sure hope I got that right; I wasn't sure...}IC: Selena cleared her throat.
"Um, excuse me, thank you," she said, coming between the knight and the monk to face him ("him" being the monk). "I know which minotour you're talking about, and I garauntee (sp?) you that she won't cause any problems." She blushed. Oh well, she thought, I've already established how silly I can be; I might as well accomplish something while I'm at it... {OOC: Here goes nothing:} IC:
"When the god Gilean created humans, he gave them the power to choose. Will you, as a servant of the god of good (assuming this is the {counts on fingers} fourth age and they are monks of Paladine...monks of Paladine?) look past that power held within yourself and look only for the petty differences in appearance between yourself and the minotours?" He seemed about to object, but Selena put her hand up, and frowned at him sternly (this was the first and probably the last speech she ever gave, and she was going to give it...for Rel)
"Woe is the day when a person who claims he is the advocate of good turns away one whose claim to that title is more genuine still" (OOC: yes, I did get that from Raistlin in Dragons of a Summer Flame when he was talking with Steel about his father, you don't have to look it up...I just couldn't think of anything better...)
Selena's eyes fluttered. She was still weary from being held captive on the ship. She stumbled. {If anyone caught her, she stands upright...if not, I guess she gives the rest sitting down...}
"A great kender once told me that a person should never be judged for what they are, but for who they are," (OOC:yup, I got that from Tas in Dragons of a Fallen Sun...I admit I like it and use it a lot.)
IC: "Will you not give Rel a chance? She was nice to me when I had no friends, and she comforted me. She would have helped me find a nice place to stay when I was sold into bondage. If it weren't for her, who knows what may have become of me? You were given the power, the freedom, to choose between good and evil, will you use it, or are protocol and order to choose for you, instead?"
Selena was still tired, though she couldn't imagine why; she had had a nice little nap on the way here. Perhaps it was the sleeping powder she had "acquired" from a mage in Flotsam that had spilled onto her clothes from her pouch while she was asleep on the dragon. Anyway, all she knew was that if she opened her eyes everything got all hazy and so she decided to close them. Sleep overtook her, yet it was evidently not very peaceful. She frowned, twitched and muttered about Rel in her sleep from nearly the moment she closed her eyes.

ooc; Doesn't sound to me like you're in any kind of a slump, that was amazing!

ic; Bronson and the Monk exchanged glances throughout the speech, the Monk becoming more open minded and Bronson becoming more frustrated. The knight liked the girl, she was cute, she had spunk, but she was out of her bloody mind! He had caught her as she wavered, and when she finally succumbed to sleep, he carried her to a bed the Monk had waiting. After that, they continued their argument.

"Sir Bronson, I have changed my mind. Perhaps we have a place for the creature."

"It doesn't make sense . . ."

"What do you mean?"

"That a beast of that reputation would be kind without reason."

"Perhaps you should open your mind to the girl's words, young Bronson. She's got a good head on her."

"Good as rock, I suppose . . ."

"Take heart, good Bronson; wiser are those who are able to give insight to the wise."

At that moment, two copper dragons swung in carrying the young minotaur between them. She was bound hands and legs, and was dropped unceremoniously on the ground. Bronson and the Monk approached her.

"Let me help you, my dear . . ." The Monk immediately took charge, unbinding the minotaur to Bronson's surprise and dismay.

"I can't allow you to do that, Father . . ."

"This is my monestary, not yours; we are under my rules, and I say the minotaur is given as much freedom as the girl." He turned to the minotaur. "What is your name?"

"Rel . . ." She answered hesitantly.

"Rel, I have been told of your kindness, and have been requested to show you like actions. Please, let us go and have a warm meal."

Rel seems surprised at the sudden display of kindness, but not as flustered as Bronson.

"I will have to report to my superior about this . . ."

"Join us first for dinner, Bronson." The Monk invited. They had walked by Selena's room and Rel stopped.

"She's okay!" Rel said, "I had been worried about her!"

"Yes, she is all right." The Monk replied. "She may even join us later when she wakes.""I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Selena woke up slowly. She rubbed her eyes. Then she stretched as she leisurely got out of bed. She looked down at the bed. Monestary beds obviously weren't designed for the purpose of comfort, she thought.
She brushed off her clothes. Then she jerked her head up. Was that food she smelled? She couldn't remember the last time she had eaten. She walked, not caring that her hair was tousled (I'm pretty sure that's a word) and her clothes wrinkly from tossing and turning in her slumber. She followed her nose to where she saw the monk, the discomfitted knight, and Rel eating dinner. She didn't think before speaking and walked clumsily into the room.
"Rel! Hi! I was so worried about you!" she said, then stopped. Only now did she realize how dreadful she must look. She blushed. Then her stomach rumbled loudly. She bit her lip.
"Um...may I join you?" she asked, now as red as crimson, but also about to burst out laughing at the silliness of it all. She worked hard to suppress a smile. The monk smiled kindly when Selena entered, Rel smiled genuinely, the knight flickered a smile, seeing how cute she was with her hair in disarray, but clouded over almost imemdiately. He rose form his meal and motioned Selena to a chair next to him and the monk. The monk was on one end of the table, Bronson and the empty chair to the monk's left, and Rel and an empty chair to the monk's right.

"Please, do sit down dear!" The monk said. "We have some stew and vegtables and fresh milk."

"Did you enjoy your flight?" Rel asked, "I have to admit I really didn't like mine . . ."

"Yours wasn't meant to be a joyful experience." Bronson interrupted, "Seeing as your people killed over half of mine."

Rel's ears fell, and she cintinued in silence. The monk shook his head disapprovingly at Bronson."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Selena may have been oblivious to many things, but she could sense the tension in the room. She didn't know, however, who she should feel sorry for. Poor Bronson had lost so many friends. But Rel wouldn't hurt a fly. So Selena quietly sat down next to Bronson and ate in silence. She occasionally looked up to see if the expressions of anyone's faces had changed. They hadn't.
Selena picked at the food on her plate. Sure she was hungry, but how could they expect her to eat anything with the tension in the air so thick you could hammer a nail into it and hang paintings, as her Aunt Singalong would say. As she had been taught in Kendermore, mealtime wasn't just a time for eating, it was a time to make conversation and raise each other's spirits. If she were there right now, they would be singing and talking of their day. Maybe these people expected her to start the conversation.
But whom to speak with? Rel looked depressed. The monk looked upset. Bronson, however, sat up straight with an air of importance. She would talk to him first.
She cleared her throat and looked at him shyly.
"So, Bronson," she said,"what are we going to do now?" I will bring justice to those who dare to oppress the kender race, for I am the kenderdefender, and with Fizban's divine help I will... Fizban? Bronson was shaken out of some deep thoughts when Selena spoke suddenly, and gave himself a moment to collect his thoughts. "You will stay here where it is safe. I am my *remaining* comrades will excort your *friend* back for questioning. Very few made it past the minotaur's butchery." He sneered, looking at Rel. The minotaur flicked her ear nervously, akcnowledging the threat silently. Bronson soon caught the fiery glare of the Monk, if indeed monks can look fiery, and continued with his meal.

"Where are you from, dear?" The monk asked, "And what is your name? You and Bronson already seem to be acquainted . . .""I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Selena pouted at the rude way Bronson was treating Rel. Rel was so nice; Selena was sure she hadn't hurt anyone. Besides, wasn't it the knights who had started the battle in the first place? She was just about to ask Bronson what the matter was when the monk started asking her some questions. She whirled her head around to face him.
She looked kind of embarrassed when giving her answers. She knew she couldn't lie, but it was usually a little difficult to admit she was from Kendermore. For some reason people tended to react strangely to this fact.
"Umm...My name is Selena Arrowbaum," she said, looking down and picking at her food, kicking her feet back and forth under her chair," and I come from Kendermore."
She looked up; perhaps a change of subject would be nice.
"I was on my way to Palanthas when I came across some...*difficulties*. Have you ever been there? I heard it's an awfully nice place and I can't wait to see it!" she exclaimed, beaming brightly at him. "Palanthas is a very nice city, big, with lots of diversity . . perhaps in some ways too much . . ." Bronson said.

"It is indeed a city rich in culture." The monk continuedm addressing both Selena and Rel. "Perhaps Bronson can take the two of you there someday, as an appology for his actions."

Bronson looked bolt upright at the monk, then waited hesitantly for the other's reactions."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Selena smirked, though she hoped it didn't show. Bronson *had* been awful rude to Rel, and his exposure was his due come uppance. Then she got a serious look to her face. This was, after all, a serious matter. Now that the monk had brought forth the subject, she couldn't just pretend she didn't notice.
"He's right, Bronson," she said, putting a hand on his shoulder gently.
"You needn't be so cross towards her; I'm sure she didn't mean anybody any harm. Besides, how many of those other knights were you close to, anyway?"
Selena bit her tongue at this. Perhaps that question could have been a mistake...? Bronson was silent, face set and dark, his eyes starting to glimmer with tears, though later he would deny it. He stood abruptly, slammed his napkin against the table, and stormed out of the room.

"I didn't hurt anyone, I swear!" Rel said quietly in her defense.

"He's had a trying day." The monk said quietly. "But that doesn't give him the right to be so mean to one who actually tried to save his friend, right Rel? Isn't that what you were telling me?"

Rel was silent, obviously still conflicted by her earlier actions.

"At any rate," the monk continued, "When he finds his peace I will make sure he shows the two of you some hospitality.""I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

"I know you didn't cause anyone any harm." Said Selena to Rel. She looked at the door that Bronson had left through earlier, then down at her plate remorsefully. She put down her fork. She wasn't hungry anymore. "But it would appear I have..." she mumbled, to herself. She winced when she thought of her earlier words to him. How could she have been so stupid? (I guess when you're raised in Kendermore you don't think as much as you should before you speak.) she thought. (so from now on, I'm going to do a lot of thinking before I say anything to anyone) She sat there quietly; the sound of crickets chirping came from outside. She couldn't stand it. Every second of the silence reminded her again and again of why she wasn't talking. She got up from her seat.
"Excuse me," she said quietly, then," thank you for the hospitality."
She walked quietly (as she had learned to do in Kendermore) throughout the hallways, trying to find the exit. She had been asleep when she was brought in here, so she wasn't sure which was the way out. This was a pretty big building after all, and she never was good with directions.
After passing the same doorway seven times, she finally found the exit. She leaned against the side of the building and slid down. She breathed deeply; the fresh air was just what she needed to clear her head. She wondered where Bronson had gotten off to and what she should say when she saw him again. The wall Selena was against faced a green expanse which ended in a quick drop to the unending sea. The sun had set and a pink glow hung over the horizon, quickly diminishing. A silver dragon painted by the sunset swooped down and landed on the grassy patch, poking his head down near the edge. The dragon seemed to nudge a bush gently, and then a hand reached out and patted the dragon's snout. Apparently, Bronson was standing on the other side of the bush, looking out at the sea. The dragon looked at him with sorrowful eyes, but after a moment turned, casting him one last glance, and slipped off the edge and flew into the night. Bronson appeared from behind the bush and headed towards the exit Selena had found, then looked up and noticed her. He paused for a moment, then hung his head, turned, and started walking around the building with a quick gait.

Selena was lost in thought when she first saw Bronson. She wasn't fully aware that he was there until he saw her and started walking away. She jumped up clumsily, almost falling back against the wall. (I wonder how I ended up with a klutz for a character...it just seems to fit her.) She steadied herself with her left hand then looked at the corner Bronson had just turned.
"Wait!" she called, then ran after him. Why didn't he want to talk to her? she wondered. She thought he liked her. (Oh, that's right) she thought (It's because of what I said to him before. I should probably apologize to him now, then he won't be so sad. And as my Uncle Slipaknot would say, "Sadness is the beginning of madness" ...whatever that means.)
She turned the corner sharply, nearly slipping in some mud in the non-grassy area near the building. (It wasn't very smart of them to put a monestary so close to the sea) she thought (now it's all muddy and slippery) But she didn't fall (for once...). Though one of her shoes did fly off to the grassy area to her right.
"Bronson, wait!" she called again as she ran over into the grass to get her shoe back.
"I wanted to talk to you," she said, hopping on one foot as she tried to catch up with him while putting on her mud-caked shoe.
"Please stop," she pleaded, giving him a pitiful look.
She had given up trying to put her shoe on while running when she had slipped and fallen on her back end in another patch of mud. Now she sat trying to unknot the laces so she could get it back on. She knew she probably looked like a child playing in a mud puddle, but she couldn't help it!
She thought she saw a trace of a smile flicker across his lips. She sat up straight, indignant, clenching her fists. This was not funny in the least!
"If you find this humorous," she began, starting to get up, eyeing him menacingly, "then you can just- whoa!" she said, slipping and falling back down in the mud. Now it was all over her clothes and face. (Oh well, they needed washed anyway, she thought.) She bit her tongue really hard when she fell. She tried to finish her sentence, but it hurt her tongue too bad. Her eyes watered.
She tried her best to glare at him, lest he should get the silly idea into his head that this was comical in the very least. Although all that she could manage was a pitiful look, with her eyes watering and her face covered with mud and specks of blood coming from her mouth and her panting from the running.
She had already forgotten why she had been following him in the first place.

Bronson hadn't wanted to talk to her, her earlier comment still stung at him like a sharp dagger, but he turned when she fell. There was something different about her, covered in mud like that, and for a moment her words were filed away in a forgotten drawer in his mind. At first he had to hold himself from laughing, but the more she struggled the less funny it seemed. It hurt. What she said had really hurt, but seeing her now, covered in mud, herself wounded in pride and body, on the verge of tears . . . . he remembered first seeing her, and had never even thought about wanting to see her like this, and despite what she had said, he still didn't want to see her like that.

So he turned and approached her, then knelt in the mud by her. "It'll be all right." He said quietly, brushing her muddened hair from her face. "You have to be careful around here." He picked up her shoe and pocketed it, then picked her up and stood. "Let's go inside and get you cleaned off, and maybe then we can talk." He said.

**Why am I doing this?** He thought as he walked through the maze of corridors, looking for anything that resembled a tub. Perhaps he was doing it because he liked the feel of her body in his arms, her head against his shoulder, because he felt guilty, as if he had been the mud she slipped on, the slime that caused her to fall. The comment still hurt him, so many friends he had lost . . . but her determination to set things right would always stand out in Bronson's mind.

He finally found a monk, asked him for directions, and was given a reply. He followed more corridors to a main courtyard with a square pool of water. He set Selena by the edge. "I'll leave yo uhere to your privacy." He said. "You can find me in the adjoining courtyard when you're ready." He gave her a small, almost bittersweet smile as he turned and exited the courtyard.

"Bronson, you've got a soft heart, you know that?" He said to himself as he entered the adjoining yard, this one also sporting a cleaning pit.

"I know two people who woulnd't agree, though one still denies it."

Bronson jumped as the monk surprised him. "Father . . ."

"Rel just finished telling me what happened."

Bronson's face hardened. "So she told you how she killed Eric and that other cow woulnd't let me get to his body . . ."

"No . . . She explained to me that she saw you handing Selena to the dragon, and was bringing the girl's whippik which she had forgotten . . ."

"Impossible, she's a minotaur!" Bronson spat, trying to keep his voice down so Selena wouldn't hear.

"She may be, but she's different. No doubt her own people would have struck her down."

"What was the rest of her story?" Bronsons asked through clenched teeth.

"It's a complicated tale, so bear with me. She was bringing Selena her whippick, and Eric thought she was attacking. He lashed out at her, then the other female, Syk, I believe Rel called her, intervened to protect Rel. By this time your young silver had picked you up . . ."

"I looked back down to see two minotaurs converging on Eric . . ."

"Rel was trying to explain. By that time, however, the minotaurs had gained the upper hand . . ."

"So is that when Rel killed Eric? Or was it Sick?"

"Syk . . " The monk corrected.

"Who killed Eric?" Bronson nearly yelled.

"Calm yourself, my son." The monk pleaded. "Three bulls saw the females and the human, and quickly attacked. They killed Eric first, and Syk tried to protect Rel and Eric's body.

Bronson was silent. After several moments, he spoke with a shaking voice; "You mean, Rel was protecting him?"

The monk nodded. "And Syk was protecting both of them."

Bronson shook his head. "I saw Rel holding Eric's body and thought she had done it, that's why I had her picked up . . . as revenge, I guess you could say . . ." He added quietly.

"Revenge or no, it is a good thing you brought her back. With her accepting view of humans and other races, her kindness to others, she would have been viewed as 'weak' and would have been killed by her own people. She really is different."

Bronson nodded slowly, suddnely feeling guilty for the way he had treated her.

"And where is dear Selena? She left after you did and I had to do some talking to keep Rel in her seat and in her story . . ."

Bronson was quiet for a moment. "She tried to find me . . . to talk to me . . . she's in the next courtyard cleaning off . . ."

"Cleaning off?" the monk said, raising and eyebrow.

Bronson gave a faint smile. "She, uh . . .she slipped in the mud."

"Ah, yes. You have to be careful around here." He looked at Bronson. "Looks like you've had some slips yourself . . ." He was referring to where Selena's mud had rubbed off on Bronson's vest. He smirked.

"I carried her back . . ." He answered, taking off his cloak, then removing the muddy vest. Some of the dirt and muck had still seeped through, and he ended up removing every upper layer he had down to the skin.

"I shall leave you, then. See you with the 'morrow."

After the monk had left, Bronson knelt by his pool and started the unknown task of cleaning his own clothes, his mind completely enveloped by what had happened . . .with Selena, and with Rel . . . and he began regretting most of his actions."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

"No, you were yelling."

OOC: That was great!! I loved reading it!
IC: Selena leaned her head against Bronson's shoulder. She almost felt like scowling. After all, she could walk by herself; she didn't need any help.
She gave herself a good look, covered in mud, clothes disheveled, one shoe off. Then again, maybe it was nice to be carried every now and then and not have to worry about slipping. She put her arms around his neck.

He followed more corridors to a main courtyard with a square pool of water. He set Selena by the edge. "I'll leave you here to your privacy." He said. "You can find me in the adjoining courtyard when you're ready." He gave her a small, almost bittersweet smile as he turned and exited the courtyard.

Selena gave him a thankful smile, then turned to the water. She peered over the edge inquisitively. This certainly didn't resemble a tub, but then again, it was in a courtyard, so it couldn't be a lake. She looked at how clean and clear the water was; not like the Blood Sea of Istar. You could see all the way to the bottom.
Fond memories of Kendermore came back to her. She remembered how after the heavy rains in the spring, lakes would form all over and how she had played with her friends in them. Perhaps that was what this was for. Too bad her friends weren't around...
Selena got into the water and ducked her head under. She got all the mud out of her hair and off of her face. Then she took off her clothes after doing a thorough investigation of all of the entrances just to make sure her privacy was still in tact. (It wouldn't do any of the monks any good, she supposed, to see her in such a state.) She scrubbed all the mud off herself and then her clothes. She heard voices outside. It sounded like Bronson and the monk. They sounded upset, like they were arguing. Then they seemed almost relieved. Selena shrugged; she had gotten herself into enough of other people's business already.
She laid her clothes out to dry and went to wade some more in the pool of water. It was nice, she thought, to go into the water and not have to worry about anything.
When her clothes and herself were finally dry, she put them on, put her hair back up in its topknot and went to the entrance to the other courtyard. She made a quick look to make sure every thing was in order. Hmm...Bronson didn't look too bad without a shirt. ;-)
She tip-toed up behind him like a kender, then cleared her throat. I will bring justice to those who dare to oppress the kender race, for I am the kenderdefender, and with Fizban's divine help I will... Fizban? Fizban, what are you doing?! Bronson was so wrapped up in his thoughts that he never heard Selena enter, and the sound of her clearing her thoart caused him to jump, not too much but enough to send him teetering into the water with a large splash. He stood, shaking his head and sending water flying eveywhere, and looked at Selena . . . and smiled.

"It'd serve you right if I pulled you in with me!" He teased. He climbed from the pool and gathered his shirt, vest and cloak, laying them out in a sunny spot to dry. "Did you enjoy your bath?""I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Selena covered her mouth with her hand when Bronson went down into the water. She hadn't meant to do that, just to surprise him a little. She was about to laugh, then held her breath to see how he would react. He was indeed a strange person; in all her seventeen years she hadn't met anyone so unpredictable.
He smiled at her genuinely. Selena sighed with relief. She bit her lip and smiled back.

"It'd serve you right if I pulled you in with me!" He teased. He climbed from the pool and gathered his shirt, vest and cloak, laying them out in a sunny spot to dry. "Did you enjoy your bath?"

Selena nodded. She was beginning to learn to think before talking... After a few seconds, she said, " Yes, very much so; though it would appear you need some help with yours," she teased back, " but don't worry; the hardest part's over; we've gotten you to get into the water once already."
She sat down near the edge and dipped her feet into the water, moving them back and forth. She hadn't put her shoes on because Bronson still had one of them. She continued to look from the water to Bronson; she couldn't look at him for more than a few seconds at a time without feeling the impact of her mixed feelings for him. She waited to see what he would do.

Bronsons smoothed his clothes on the ground. It felt rather awkward . . .now that she was here, he didn't know what to say, or how to start it. He noticed she was barefoot, then realizing he still had her other shoe. He took it out of the pocket of his vest, which he hadn't cleaned as meticulously as the others; both pocket and shoe were wet with much and water. He joined Selena, drooping his vest over the side and then leaning down to clean out her shoe.

"Sorry about that." He said. What to say??? So many things entered his mind, each sounding worse than the next. He could feel his face flush as he tried desperately to think of something, anything . . . Then, he sighed; "I'm sorry I made you fall." He said quietly, his eyes trained on the shoe as if, in addition to scrubbing it in water he could burn the mud off."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

"No, you were yelling."

Selena cocked her head at his latest statement. Now why would someone so...self-rightious want to go and blame himself for her own folly. She looked at him inquisitively. Something was bothering him, and it wasn't her rash statement from earlier; it was something more recent.
"What's wrong?" she asked. I will bring justice to those who dare to oppress the kender race, for I am the kenderdefender, and with Fizban's divine help I will... Fizban? Fizban, what are you doing?! What do you mean you can't find your hat? It's right on your he-... {Blushes} Hold that thought...

What's wrong? How could he answer that? How could he answer it without breaking? How could he put it into words? That he was the only survivor? It couldn't be, he told himself, therefore he shrugged. "Nothing of importance." He said, again, quietly. "Where were you headed?" He asked suddenly, a lame excuse for a topic change, he knew, but it was the first thing in his head."I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Bronson listened, happy that he didn't ahve to talk for a while. As Selena's story neard its end, however, Rel entered the courtyard.

"The monk said you would be here. He told me to come meet you . . ." She said hesitantly. Bronson managed a smile. "I've just been telling Selena how I was going to take the two of you to Palanthas." He said.

Rel was looking more and more excited as Selena prattled on, Bronson amazed with how long she could go without drawing breath.

The monk entered and summoned Bronson, who wished a present farewell to Selena before putting his shirt back on, and actually held out his hand and shook Rel's before he left.

"How far is Palanthas from here?" Rel asked Selena. She cocked her head hesitantly. "Will they accept me?""I think our definitions of yelling are different, because when you said I yelled at you , I hadn't thought that I did."

Selena almost laughed at Rel's question; she was so naive, in a nice way, that is. She looked surprised.
"Of course, Rel," she said, "why they've got everyone in Palanthas: humans, dwarves, elves, minitours, and even..." her eyes sparkled with mischief and anticipation,"kender." She whispered the word more to herself than to the minotour, fond memories of her homeland, Kendermore, coming back to her. Selena went pale; her eyes widened. If this was a joke, and Selena was certainly partial to jokes of all natures, it most certainly was *not* funny. She breathed shallow. The best way to educate Rel on the subject, she supposed, was to tell her.

"No," she said softly, shaking her head to emphasize her point,"you don't *eat* them; you...associate (sp?) with them. They're a race, you see, like any other race on Krynn: the dwarves, humans, gnomes, *minotours*, ogres, Irda...
...But the point is they are a dignified race worthy of respect. Why if my Uncle Trapspringer were here, he wouldn't believe his ears. Of course, there was the time when he overheard the evil wizard speaking of controlling all the kender, but I believe that may have been different. So, they aren't edible, they're just sociable, you see? Killing one is *murder*, just like killing or harming anything else. "Of course!" replied Selena. "You see, kender have a knack for being in the right place at the right time and I'm sure at least a few will pop up during our stay. I might even be able to help a few. You see, while kender are certainly a dignified race, they are sometimes considered a little too sociable and friendly by humans and are sometimes treated rudely. I've corrected plenty of these insolent people in the past, yet I have a feeling there's still some left to be taught a thing or two."

Seemingly uncharacteristically, Selena nonchalantly fingered the area of her back where her whippik was once strapped. She wondered what had become of it. Also unwontedly of her was the expression on her face. Usually timid and curious, when she spoke of her native people her expression became serious. They had raised her from her birth, and they meant everything to her.

Selena flushed, embarrased at her display of emotion. "So, um, anyway...I'm sure we'll end up meeting a few." She twirled her topknot and bit her bottom lip.

"Careful there!" The monk said jovially as he helped her up and stood himself. "This is a place of quiet reflection, there are many unaware of such excitement!" But he was smiling. Rel appologized, and he took her back into the courtyard with Selena. "Bronson has left to attend to some duties, but he will be back tomorrow morning to take both of you to Palanthas."

Selena raised an eyebrow at the monk.

or . . . . there's a festival tonight in the town just down the road from here. . . "

(Now *that's* more like it, she thought)

"Well, the quiet complications sound great and all...but...," Selena was already heading out the door, holding Rel by the hand. "I'm sure you people wouldn't want a buch of us girls hanging around spoiling the party, so I'll be at the festival with Rel if you need me..." the last of her sentence could barely be heard seeing as she had already walked out the door and was walking in what she hoped was the direction of the exit.

"Here we are," she said after walking around in circles about four times. They had finally found the exit. She guessed she should have trusted Rel when she told her the exit was this way, but she supposed she just had to learn it for herself.

"Now," she said," let's see, where's this road he was talking about?" She began to head out the door to, no doubt, lead them around in circles time and time again until she finally headed the right direction.

"Well," she said, "it's where a lot of people get together and celebrate something; though sometimes they don't have to be celebrating anything, they may just want to have a good time. So everybody gets together and there's music and stories and food and games and everybody has fun! We had them all the time in Kendermore...pretty much every day come to think of it. But the point is you have fun and meet lots of interesting people. Not to mention," she added more to herself then to Rel," that you end up with lots of interesting things in your pouches."

She had stopped at the room she had been sleeping in and retrieved her pouches and found her whippik. She patted one of her pouches fondly. Now *this* was going to be fun.

Selena was lithely making her way through the crowd. Somehow her pouches had grown heavier within the last several moments, but she wasn't worried about that. She had her eye fixed on the most interesting money pouch. She wanted to examine it for a little while, to see if it was magical or something. She could return it to the man who was carrying it later...the next time she saw him. She slipped quietly forward and stuck out her hand...

"Selena!" Rel called as the guard rode up on horseback.

Selena jerked her head up.

"Now, I wondered where she had gotten off to," she said to herself. She slipped through the crowd until she came upon Rel. She spotted the guard. *Oh, a welcoming committee, how thoughtful.* She reached up as he approached to shake his hand.

"Hullo," she said," I'm Selena Arrowbaum, and this here is my good friend Rel. It's very thoughtful for you to come out here all on account of us. But I'm sure Rel and I can find our way around....what is it?" she asked in response to the cold look he was giving her.

"Give it back," he said.

"What?" she asked.

"My money pouch."

"Oh this?" she asked, holding out a small brown pouch with a cord through the top to close it. The guard snatched it from her, a grim expression on his face.

"Say," said Selena, a pout on her face (she didn't much care for these people's hospitality),"what gives?"

She took a step back. When the guard tried to take her whippik, she jerked it back. "That's mine!" she said defensively. She was about to start a speech she had long rehearsed about the ethical value of not taking that which does not belong to you, but just then she tripped backward over a small rock in the dirt and landed on her backside with a -thump-. (Figures, she thought) She rolled her eyes at the smug look of the guard and went ahead and let herself be restrained before she made even more of a fool of herself. However, she wouldn't let her pouches be taken away. She slipped her lockpicks back into her shoe from one of her pouches, hopefully unnoticed and followed where she was led.

"Don't worry Rel," she said in a loud whisper which could probably be heard all around them, "I'm sure that the monk will help get us out of this. Selena turned to Rel, then shook her head. Rel didn't understand at all. Not that Selena completely understood, either. She wondered what these people's laws were like if someone could be arrested for being a minotour or being born in Kendermore. It wasn't as if these were things they could *help*- they were just like that. She would just have to explain this to the guard.
"Wait here," she said to Rel and got out her lockpicks.
"Now let's see...ahh! I'll use this one....a little more....almost there..."
-pop- the lock was picked. Now to find the guard and explain everything to him...

About her third time being unceremoniously shoved back into her cell and told to stay put, Selena was beginning to suspect this guard didn't care to hear her reasoning. And she considered that very rude.

"You know," she began, rubbing her bruised shoulder (she had hit it against the wall upon being pushed back into the cell), "one of these days you're going to get it. Why, we have some very good connections with the monestary nearby. The head monk there would take our side over yours any day. And Bronson, too, Right Rel?" Rel wasn't liking the way this guard was treating Selena. She nodded vigorously when Selena mentioned the monk.

This sparked the guard's attention. The head monk was incharge of making sure the surplus foods the monestary grew were donated to several small villages in the area, theirs being one of them.

Selena drew herself up importantly, assuming that now she had the upper hand.

The guard had little time to stop Selena before she was on a full-out kender-fledged bantering. He looked over at the Minotaur, who seemed to be listening with interest (intermingled with periodic confusion, mind you) and finally decided the only threat were Selena's kender-kleptomaniac tendencies. With that, and the knowledge that they didn't want to upset the monestary, he unlocked the cells and told them to follow him. He took them out into the square, where he announced that they were the village's 'Special Guests' sent from the monestary, and would be shown hospitality. He gave Selena one small warning comment about leaving other people's pouches alone, and then let them loose.

"Hmm...I guess I do," said Selena, not quite sure, but enjoying the thought.
Someone walked by. Selena bit her lip and painfully put her hands in her pockets to ensure they wouldn't wander around.
"Let's find something interesting to do." she suggested, "I haven't been to a festival in quite some time."
She grabbed Rel's hand and led her around until she found what looked to be a travelling magician performing a magic show. She let go of Rel's hand and crept to the front, where she watched with interest. Rel follwed Selena willingly, but stayed near the back of the crowd after Selena had let go. For a minotaur she was small, but was still a bit taller than most of the other men around, and saw the show with ease and interest."Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli, The Fellowship Of The Ring

The magician's show was terribly amazing. Selena had seen very few mages in her seventeen years, and she certainly hadn't seen one willing to perform tricks for her before. After the illusions of ogres and goblins that sent an unfamiliar tingle up her spine, he went on to his "grande finale", the disappearing act.
"And for my final demonstration, I will need a volunteer."
Selena looked around for someone peculiar looking to step out of the crowd. Her friend Mable (for lack of time and a better name, lol) had once told her about a magic show she had been to...
*"When he asked for an assistant, he had already picked someone out of the crowd. You see, he told them to stand out in the crowd with everyone else so as to look like she was just a regular spectator, but she was really working for him. It reminds me of the time my Uncle Trapspringer..." But that was a different, perhaps more interesting, story.*

"And how about you, young lady?" he asked

Selena shook her head with a start. He had been talking to her nearly the entire time she was daydreaming.

"Oh, sure," she said, a bit embarrassed, but even more enthused.

She bounded up the stairs to the stage and then skidded to a halt next to him. She raised her eyebrows in exitement and beamed at him.
"Well, it would appear we have a very willing volunteer on our hands; it's just a matter of getting her attention." The crowd laughed politely.

"Now, ahem, I'll need you to stand right here and stay still. This is a very complicated spell," he said importantly. Selena eyed him critically, then nodded. She sighed impatiently as the magician explained to the crowd how amazing, yet dangerous the spell was. How his utmost concentration was of the most vital importance, and so on. Finally, however, he turned to her.
"Ready?" he asked

"Sure," she said, relieved.

He started chanting something that sounded more like gibberish than magic, but who was she to judge. After about ten seconds, there was a loud [Boom] and she was surrounded by a thick cloud of smoke. She began to cough. Then the stage opened up from under her and she felt herself falling. Then, just as she hit the ground, a pair of arms grabbed her and steadied her. Then the person ran and reached up, closing the trap door.
"Shhh!!" said the person-Selena couldn't see them- before she could say anything. "We can't let them hear us," she hissed. Selena could tell it was a girl by the sound of its voice. Her heart sank. So it wasn't really magic. Though it must look really amazing to the people outside. She knew what real magic was like, though. In fact, she wondered if she still had the sleeping powder in her pouch. She knew some had spilled on her clothes while she was on the dragon before, but there might still be some left. She fumbled around in her pouch in the dark for it. Finally she found the small pouch that contained it. She pulled it out.
"Come on!" the person hissed,"it's almost-" Selena felt herself jerked to right below the trap door. Unfortunately, however, she wasn't quite ready to be jerked like that and found the sleeping powder spilled over what must have been the head of her new friend.
"What in the..." the woman trailed off, and slumped to the ground.
"Hello?" whispered Selena. No answer.
"Uh, oh," she said to herself. Ok, just stay calm, she thought, there's got to be a way to open this door. She reached up and pushed. It didn't budge. She heard the magician nervously start the spell for a second time. She felt around and suddenely her hand traced over something familiar. A lock! All she had to do was figure out the lock and she would have the door open. She felt it and nodded sagely as the magician started the spell again. She heard him rapping on the stage right above her.
She reached down into her sock and removed her lockpicks. What was probably a simple turn or twist to the magician's assistant was going to be a lockpicking in the dark for her. She set to work as she heard the "mage" explain to the crowd that sometimes spells took several times to work properly. Finally, waiting for the end of his next spell, she twisted and turned the picks, heard a satisfying [clink-clunk] and the door swung open. Smoke surrounded and nearly choked her. She took a firm grip on her whippik and swung her self up. ( uh, oh) she thought, (now who's going to shut the trap door?) Rel was amazed by the show . . .there was absolutely nothing of its sort in Mithra, that was for sure! Then, the magician announced that he was going to perform a disappearing act, and needed a volunteer. Immediately, Rel felt at unease. Though she'd never seen it, the thought of people just vanishing before her wasn't a fun idea. To her dismay, Selena was selected. Rel bit her lip in nervous anticipation, and when Selena was finally shrouded in smoke and suddenly not there, the Minotaur panicked and tried to run forward through the crowd. Some burly, older man grabbed her shoulder.

"It's just a trick, you friend is fine." He snapped. Rel eased up and went back to stand apart from the crowd, watching nervously. The magician tried to bring Selena back, but to no avail. Rel started getting antsy. She wandered to the back of the stage as the magician attempted time after time to correct his mistake. Rel found a door and, with some strength, managed to open it. The light from the many torches around the village played into the space beneath the stage, imluminating a woman lying on the ground and a hanging trapdoor, through which poured much smoke. Rel immediately ran in and closed the trapdoor, then looked down at the woman. Apparently she had fallen hard and hit her head; there was a large bump. Rel bent down to inspect some powdery stuff that was on the woman's clothes. Selena heard something slam next to her. She looked over; the trapdoor was closed. But who-

"Well," said the magician, relieved, beads of sweat rolling down his face,"it appears that magic has once again prevailed. Now, off you go young lady." He ushered her off the stage-and none too gently-not letting her explain that his assistant may need some assistance. She shrugged-he would find out sooner or later. Selena peered into the crowd for Rel. She didn't see her anywhere. Rel hadn't up and left her had she? Selena shook her head. She wouldn't do that. Selena started to walk around, a perplexed look on her face.

Now, just where could she have gotten off to? she thought. After about an hour of looking, she was upset and worried. She figured that a minotour would be easy to spot in a crowd of humans, but she didn't see her anywhere. Eventually, she found herself behind the stage. Why was the door open?

Suddenly, Selena remembered the magician's assistant. She wondered if she was still under there. If she was, she might be awake again by now, and Selena could explain to her what happened. She slowly peered in and let her eyes adjust to the darkness.

"Hello?" she asked, "Is anyone here?" Maybe she had already left, forgetting to close the door.

Selena thought she saw someone further into the room. She walked slowly towards them. Suddenly, she tripped over something.

"What the-oof!" she said, falling to the ground. She turned around in perplexity to see what she had tripped over...

"...Rel?" she asked, confused. She felt the minotour; she was only asleep. She went over to the assistant, she was also asleep, but not for long. Selena could see that she had a pretty big bump on the head from her fall to the ground. Selena shook her until she moaned groggily.

"What happened?" she asked. Selena sighed in relief.
"Well, you see, we were in the middle of the 'magic' show when-"

"The show! Oh no! You never made it up to the stage?! It will all be ruined! It-"

"Stop! I was just about to tell you that I *did* make it," the woman sighed, relieved,"you see, I had had some sleeping powder in my pouch and was just making sure it was still there when you pulled me to the trap door..."

"How did you get it open?" the woman eyed her, nervous and suspicious.

Selena smiled, "Lockpicks, of course. They were given to me by my great Uncle-"

The woman's eyes bugged out, "Kender? Near the magic show?! That's enough." Before Selena could warn her about the fact that Rel was still asleep on the ground next to them, the woman began to storm off. Of course, though, she tripped over Rel with much the same response Selena had had.

"What the- oof!" The woman fell to the floor and turned to look at what she had tripped over, all the time mumbling to herself about kenders and thieves-things Selena decided to ignore. However, when she saw Rel, she didn't have quite the same response Selena'd had.

"Aaaaah! Minotour!" the woman screeched. Selena supposed that from her location under the stage the assistant hadn't had the chance to hear the announcement about the "special guests." Only, before Selena could explain this, the woman had ran out the door and locked it tight. Selena stumbled in the dark, trying her best not to trip over Rel, and made her way to the door. She got out her lockpicks once again and started picking. She heard the familiar [click-clunk] of the lock being sprung, but when she moved to open the door, it wouldn't budge.

"Thorns and thistles!" Selena swore under her breath, "bolt lock."

She ran over to Rel, still unable to see in the dark. She only tripped two or three times, though, before reaching her. She shook her.

"Pssst...Rel...Rel, wake up," she thought the minotour stirred groggily. Not taking the time to make sure or to give Rel a chance to remember anything that had happened, she said, "Rel, how do we get out of here? The door's got a bolt lock and it won't budge!" Her lip quivered. While being under here had certainly been surprising at first, it could certainly get boring after a few more minutes. She awaited Rel's response. "Wha-? Locked?" Rel sat up and looked around the darkness. Everything was completely dark. She stood and found her way over to the door. "I might be able to knock it down, but I wouldn't want to break it . . . it's not mine! Do you have anything to pick thelock with?"

Rel grunted when Selena explained she had already tried, and about the bolt lock. "Well, what about the trapdoor? Can we open that?""Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli, The Fellowship Of The Ring

Selena nodded, though it must have been impossible for Rel to see this in the darkness. She began to move towards the lock when she thought she heard something outside the door. She moved toward it to listen...

"The monestary-are you sure this is a good idea?" came a man's voice.

Selena cocked her head. The monestary?

"Does it matter?," yet another man's voice, this one deeper and gruffer.

"But what could they possibly hold against it? They're just monks, and a few prisoners which I heard came in today from some Solomnian scuffle or other. Why would-"

Selena's breath came short. Why would what?

"By the God's, man, do we get paid to ask questions? Do you want the bloody gold or don't you?"

"Of course," said the first man, "but I just don't see why-"

"Then let's get a move on. We've got to meet the others; they're waiting for us on the road. I want to get this done now, while the festival is still going on. No one will be able to get there in time. Come along then."

"All right," he said again, then Selena heard the two people start to walk off. Suddenly, she heard the footsteps of one of the men stop abruptly.
"What do you think that door is doing locked like that?"

"How should I know? Probably to keep the children out. Now let's get this over with before this festival is over."

They started to walk off; Selena turned towards Rel.

"Rel," she whispered, did you *hear* that? Why do you think they were talking about the monestary? And what does it have to do with gold?" she asked.

"Did you hear something?" came the man's voice, just outside the door. Selena had thought they had walked away.

"By Takhisis, you just can't get your mind off that blasted door! Look, I'll show you there's no one in there. You see, it's locked." The second man undid the bolt lock. He started to unlock the others...
"Hmm..." she heard him grumble, this lock's been picked..." The knob on the door started to turn and Selena heard the familiar sound as if a knife were being unsheathed.

Selena held her whippik fast and crouched in the farthermost corner of the small room. What was going on? The door slowly started to open...

It's not that Rel was afriad of the darkness, but she didn't care for it much as, well, she couldn't see anything. She felt brushes of wind as Selena darted hear and there, but was suddenly thankful for the darkness, for in some small way it made her hearing more acute. She listened into the conversation, trying to piece together what she could, when Selena spoke and directed the stranger's attenion to where they were.

"Stand back, Selena." Rel warned. She didn't like the way the men had sounded and, though they were opening the door, she'd rather not be with them. She crouched. The door opened.

With a yell, Rel charged . . . .

. . . .and because of the darkness, rammed head first into the wall, splintering the wood where she was just inches shy of the entrance, through which a startled human stood with a long knife.

"What the . . .?"

"It's the minotaur from the Monestary!" The other sadid quickly. "Close the door, lock it up, get someone down here fast. I know some places where you can get plenty of gold for something like that . . ."

Rel moaned, and sat up, holding her head. She suddenly didn't feel like escaping, or going to palanthas, or any of the bit, she simply wanted some of hte Monk's warm soup and a night in a warm bed.

The others on the outside shut the door, but realized they could not lock it as Rel had rammed through that."Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli, The Fellowship Of The Ring

Selena stood up, alarmed, when she saw Rel hit her head against the wall. She ran over to her and helped her sit up, though she wasn't sure Rel was aware that she was there at all.

She heard what the men outside were saying. She wasn't sure but it didn't sound good. They tried to lock the door, but to no avail since Rel had broken the lock with her head. Wary of the man's knife, Selena didn't dare come too close. She dug through her pouches until she found a quiver of arrows in one of them.

"Rel, I'll be right back," she whispered.

While the men were arguing over how to keep the door shut, Selena went over to the trap door of the stage, fumbled around with her lockpicks until she heard the [clink-clunk] and clambered up as quietly as was possible for her. (Add a few points for her being raised among kender, subtract a few for her clumsiness and she's about average, lol) From the top of the stage, she crept to the edge, where she had a clear view of the men arguing below. She fitted an arrown into her whippik, aimed, and...

Someone grabbed her from behind, knocking her whippik from her and punching her in the stomach, causing her to double over. They pushed her off of the stage to the ground behind it, right before the two stunned mercenaries. Before she could roll over onto her back or figure out what was going on, she heard whoever had pushed her jump down beside her.

"Don't you men have any sense?" came a growling voice above her as she felt rough hands binding her own behind her back with rope that felt as rough and stiff as sandpaper. "I had half a mind to let her shoot you while you were squabbling like children. We'll never get a job done right if you ninnies don't learn to watch your backs! Now forget about the lock and let's get out of here before anyone sees us; that minotour's not going anywhere until she finds the girl, anyhow."

The man grabbed the rope binding Selena's arms tightly behind her back, and yanked her up painfully. Selena thought he would break her arms.

She suddenly burst towards the door with surprising force that startled all of them, even the one holding her rope, so that he was momentarily stunned.

"Rel!!!" she screamed; the man regained his senses after only half a second and grabbed her around the throat from behind, so that she was facing away from him and pulled out a knife.

"One more word out of you," he hissed, "and this knife'll slit you in two."

Selena found that, once again, something was wrong with her voice box and found herself unable to ask how a knife could turn her into two separate people. She'd have to wait until later.

"Here," said the man, and he handed her rope to them, disgusted, "hope you can at least handle this little girl when she's tied up. Now come along, we're already late. The others have been ready with the torches for hours. If we're going to get the job done in time, we'd better hurry."

The men jerked Selena along down toward the path toward the monestary. She was usually a pretty open-minded person, but she got the feeling that these men were just no good. She wrenched painfully around and looked back longingly at her whippik, laying abandoned in the dust right outside the back door of the stage. Hopefully she'd see it again some day. After all, she'd had it as long as she could remember, even when she was too young to hold it, much less use it. She also worried about Rel, but knew better now than to try to go back to her. She hoped she was okay.

Rel's head hurt. She sat up . . .Selena helped. There were more voices . . .Selena was gone . . .bickering behind her . . . commotion . . .Rel heard her voice called and pricked her ears up, lifting her head.

"Selena?"

with some difficulty, the minotaur stood and opened the broken door, stumbling forward over a stick. But it wasn't any stick, it was Selena's whippik. Knowing the little human wouldn't go anywhere without it, Rel picked it up. She sniffed the air, and soon smelled Selena, mingled with other humans. *I wonder how Rel is; hopefully she's better off than me* thought Selena as she hurried to keep up with the men. Every now and then she would trip over a rock, root, fallen branch, or her own feet (this was most common), and, not having her whippik to steady her, she would fall down, hindering the men's hope for a swift and silent trek. They took none to kindly to her, and would curse at her and jerk her up painfully.

She wanted to tell them just how she felt about their actions, but now she had a new hindrance: a gag. They had put it on her just as she was in the middle of lecturing them about the finer points of politeness, especially when associating with strangers. She was starting to give them an example of how her Uncle Trapspringer had made very good friends with a very prominent royal family simply by using good manners. Of course, when they found out that Trap hadn't *actually* been a royal ambassador from the Ergothian Isles, they had somewhat changed their minds, but it all went to show you that...

Selena moved her sore jaws as much as she could. They were starting to get stiff. The gag had to be at least about six inches wide, and, albeit the fact that she could (and would) speak for hours on end if allowed to, her mouth was not too much larger than average, and had grown quite sore after about half an hour since the disgusting gag-she would have asked where in the Abyss it had come from, had, well, she been able to ask anything at all- had been shoved into her mouth, and none to kindly, by one of the men. She supposed that being lectured about using good manners made them feel guilty.

On the other hand, now that her mouth wasn't continually moving, she could actually hear things she couldn't before. Things such as the men whispering amongst themselves ahead on the trail in front of her, the shuffling of their boots as they attepted to move quietly through the darkness. Selena had a feeling they wanted to remain obscure, one of the reasons they had gagged her and also why they got so upset when she tripped (this happened about once every five to ten minutes).

Selena strained to hear what was being said by the men in front of her. All she could hear where bits and pieces of the conversation.

"...monestary..."; "...gaurded...dragons...a bit dangerous..."; "...fire...torches ready..."

Selena was a bit confused, but strained to listen even more. Then another sound caught her ear. An almost mute-no way could the three men possibly hear it- sound behind them. She looked back and, even with her sensitive eyesight could only barely see a large silhouette fairly far back, following their trail. She had just begun wondering who or what it was when, to no one's surprise, she tripped over a small rock embedded in the earth. The man holding the rope turned and positively boared a hole through her with his look of hatred.

"I tell you, we'll never get anywhere with her around," he growled to the others, and yanked her up by the topknot, "we should slit her now, while she's still got the gag."

"Quit your blathering; with your skill you'd end up cutting nothing but her ropes and letting her go rattle on about our plans to everyone between here and Dargaard Keep. Just keep quiet; we're almost there. Besides, we might need her in case anything goes wrong with the plan."

And with that, the man yanked her along down the trail. Finally, Selena could see several men up ahead. The men hurried their pace and started talking heatedly with them before they even came within ten paces of them.

"Oh, come on, I thought you said there weren't to be any unexpected guests," said one young man upon seeing Selena, "I had a few friends I could have brought along meself, but had to slit their throats instead."

"Quiet," snapped the oldest man, the one who had tied Selena up (she was now fairly certain he was in charge), "this one was caught eavesdropping on our friends' nice little conversation, which they were having where just about anyone this side of Krynn could hear them. It's just lucky for them that she's the only one who did. They wouldn't have known about it, either, had I not caught her myself. You can thank them if anyone else heard and shows up, and also for our being late."

The other men scowled at the two men Selena had first heard (OOC: I'm no good at making up names on Krynn). The two men scowled at Selena. Finally, the leader spoke.

"Alright, if we're all ready, then let's get going. You remember the plan, don't you all?" All of the men nodded, except one.

"Uh...not exactly."

"What?! We spent three hours discussing it yesterday! How could you forget?"

"I wasn't exactly awake the whole time, y'see. It was like this: I was up all night with the most terrrible cold and-"

"Enough!" hissed the man in charge, putting a hand to his forehead and rubbing his temples to ease the stress, "we'll discuss it briefly, once more."

Selena leaned foreward eagerly, hoping to glean more information from them. Unfortunately for her, though, it turned out that she couldn't exactly afford to lean over anymore and lost her balance once again. This, of course, was noticed, and the leader ordered her taken out of hearing range. All she cold catch from here, where she was guarded by one of the men who had apparently remained awake during the previous day's briefing, was one of the men repeatedly interrupting and going on about how he'd seen dragons near the monestary earlier that day and how he didn't think it was safe. He was always quickly interrupted and told to stay quiet.

Selena also noticed several odd supplies that the men had with them. Funny smelling liquid, torches, flints. She wondered if they were going to have a bonfire. She wondered if perhaps the monestary didn't like bonfires and that was the reason they were so worked up about it. She had a bad feeling, however that this wasn't the case.

Rel follwed as closely as she dared, as quietly as she could, but when the group nearly tripled, she stopped. She had no weapons save a kender's stick (used by a human) and had no idea how to use it. She laid low, listening hard. Then, she had a plan. She took a big whiff of hte group to solidify their scent in her nostrils, then turned and quietly crept a ways, and when she was sure she was out of earshot, ei=yeshot, or other, she tore down the path, through the village, up the road back to the monestary.

She was exhausted when she arrived and hour and a half later (sound right?), but her timing was perfect; right at that moment, the large silver dragon landed near her and Bronson slid off. He looked tired and strained, but looked at Rel with new concern. "Are you alright?"

"Selena . . ." Rel managed. This caught Bronson's attention at once. He bent down and helped Rel sit up.

"Where is she?"

"Men took her . . . beyond the village . . . are planning to burn down the Monestary . . ."

Bronson looked back at the Monestary, where the monks had started to congregate outside. The head monk approached them.

"Why would they want to burn a monestary?" Bronson asked, perhaps somewhat accusingly, as if there was something they hadn't told him.

"Many decades ago," The head monk explained, "A wealthy travelor fell sick as he made his way through the village below. They brought him here and we tried to help him. He was too far gone, however, and bought from us a grave plot as close to Paladine's Alter as we could offer. His last words, before he left this plane and his body was covered in earth, was that his traveling pack contained a powerful jewel that, when given to the wrong hands, could create great destruction. He asked us to bury it with him, and keep it secret, that the world remain safe."

"Guess it didn't remain secret, did it?"

The monk shrugged.

"Okay, get everyone into safety. Rel, do you know where they took her?"

Rel shook her head. "No, only which way they went."

"Alright, then here's what we'll do . . . ."

The dragon waiting silently at the edge of the forest, Bronson and Rel followed the path and Rel's nose deeper into the forest.

OOC: Sorry if I got a little carried away; we’re having a snow day (yay!!!!!!!) and I don’t have anything else to do all day.

Selena had been captured by minotour, nearly sold into slavery, rescued by a knight (shining armor and all), ridden on a dragon's back, swam around indoors and played a part in the grand finale of a magic show. All of those things-while some were a little spine tingling-had all been exciting. Now she stood and waited for these men to stop bickering amongst one another. This was different; this was *boring*.

Selena couldn't stand being bored. She didn't have anything to do, except wait and listen to the man guarding her yank her back every time she moved an inch. She didn't even have her whippik to keep her occupied. Just as she thought she was going to explode, she thought she could just barely hear something-besides the mercenaries arguing between each other- over behind some brush behind the man who was guarding her. Selena blinked and squinted. There was definitely something or someone, moving around in there, though just barely. Selena cocked her head, wondering what it could be.

There was a faint rustle from the brush, a whizzing sound, then the man, his face suddenly startled and pained, started to give a cry of surprise, but before he had the chance to do so, he was on the ground, out cold. Selena took a step back, surprised.

"Hey, what're you doing over there?!" cried one of the men irritably, "you're supposed to be standing guard!" All of the mercenaries suddenly focused their attention on the man on the ground, running over to him and trying to wake him up. Selena was watching, intrigued, to see what would happen next, when she suddenly felt something strong pulling on her rope. A muffled, yet inquisitive, sound came from her mouth behind the gag.

"Shhh!" said a voice, "there'll be time for that later, now come on, Selena!"

Selena turned towards the person. She couldn't see them in the dark, but she could tell they were much shorter than she was--a little shorter than four feet tall. She saw several small bags hanging from their- or her (she could tell from the voice that it was a girl)-garments. Were they... Yes, they were pouches!

Selena followed as fast as she could-without tripping, too-and soon they were in the forest, Selena panting behind her unknown companion. She caught her breath while her new friend waited, and started to ask her who she was, when, nearly through her question, she realized she was inaudible due to her gag. Her rescuer laughed.

"To see Selena Arrowbaum gagged 'n unable to talk the ears off everyone she meets! Speak of priceless!" She clutched her side. Selena scowled, confused and angered. "Oh, come on Selena, I was only kidding. Here now," she said, and removed the gag. "Didn't really think to see you like this, not ever, that's for sure. The last time I saw you, you said you were going to Palanthas. Said you were gonna take a ship, you did. Looks to me like you decided to take the more scenic route, though." She chuckled.

There were a few moments of silence.

"June?" asked Selena, suddenly exited.

"Juniper," she corrected sternly, "you know I don't like being called June. 'member Selly?” Selena could tell she was grinning. Juniper was one of her greatest friends and mentors back in Kendermore. About seven years older than her, she had gone on Wanderlust while Selena was only eight years old. She was about a quarter elf, and three quarters kender. She would turn up once every year or so after going on all sorts of adventures, telling all the kender children-and Selena-about them. Selena-whom Juniper (or “June” as all of the younger kender had called her, much to her annoyance) had been particularly fond of -had always admired this exceptionally adventurous part-kender for her intelligence and skills. “So how'd you end up in a mess like that anyway? One of their money bags end up in your pouch, eh?"

Selena was glad there was no light, because she could feel herself turning red in the face. "June-Juniper, you know I wouldn't-"

"Yeah, I know, I know. Now, let's see about these ropes. It would be kinda fun to lead you around by them sometime; 's too bad we don't have time for that now. Those great thistle-brains may notice you're gone sometime soon." Juniper started to work at untying Selena's bindings. It took some time.

"Whew! Whoever did this sure had a mind for it, even if it was done in a hurry. Haven't seen such knots since Kallen Tanglefoot made 'em back in Kendermore. 'specially hard in the dark." She said, finally unravelling the last of the rope from Selena's raw wrists. Selena let out a sigh of relief, and quickly grabbed her wrists and started inspecting them.

"Feel better, eh? Good," said Juniper, trying to sound amused, but the concern was apparent. "Now come along. They don't know which way we went, but their heading this way anyways, so their bound to catch up if we sit around too much longer." She motioned for Selena to follow.

"How did you know they were coming this way?" asked Selena curiously.

"What do you think I was doing in that bush, collecting dust? I heard more than you did, I'll bet. It'd probably be best to find that monastery they were talking about...By the way, I saw someone else following you guys as you were trotting along. Big gal, she was. Minotour by the looks of her.”

“Rel!” Said Selena, “where is she?” she asked, as if she expected her to be standing behind the nearest tree.

“She took off this’away when she saw you. Seemed pretty flustered she did. ‘s good to see you’ve got friends in high places, Selly," Juniper chuckled at Selena’s perturbed sound at the re-mentioning of her childhood nickname. "By the way, that magic show was really something” she said , “Wonder where this, er, Rel was going...Where are you staying? The local inn?”

“The monastery,” said Selena, “that’s where Bronson brought me when-“

“Who’s Bronson?” asked Juniper.

“Well, I was on the ship heading to Palanthas-you see I *was* going on a ship, you know how much I’ve always wanted to go on a ship, though-“

“Alright, alright,” said Juniper, “I see I’m not going to get a straight answer here. Guess I’ll have to ask ‘im who he is myself.”

Selena pouted. “You didn’t let me finish, June-Juniper. You see the ship was captured by minotour and I was chained up and...” Selena stopped, feeling if not seeing Juniper’s incredulous eye. She heard her snort lightly. Selena’s mouth opened wide. “It’s true, though! They were going to sell me as a slave but then the Solomnian Knights attacked them and put me on a dragon-oh June it was so exiting, well, at least while I was awake. I-“

“Of course, Selena,” said Juniper sarcastically, “just like the time your Uncle Trapspringer- Shh!!! What was that?!” Selena closed her mouth and listened intently. She could just barely hear something in the distance.

“Someone’s coming, get behind that tree!” Said Juniper.

“Oh, it’s probably just Rel...maybe she’s got Bronson with her! He’s a Knight of Solomnia and-“ she began, walking back into the middle of the path.

“Sel-ly! I don’t know how you’ve survived this long without me! No sense whatsoever!” She hissed at Selena, dragging her back with unexpectedly strong arms. Juniper grabbed her whippik and fitted an arrow into it. Selena knew that Juniper could see the peoples’ outlines-elvensight had been one of the benefits of being a quarter-elf.

Selena heard Juniper give a small, nearly soundless, gasp, then a gulp; her grip on her whippik lessened.

“Hey, Selena?” she asked in a whisper.

“Hmm?” said Selena.

“This Bronson fellow, is he kinda big and muscular-like, sorta tall?”

“Yeah, that’s him...” said Selena.

Not paying attention to it anymore-so shocked was she that one of Selena’s tales may have actually turned out to be true- Juniper let go her arrow from her whippik without thinking and it whizzed across the path just in front of Bronson and Rel, and landed in the trunk of a tree.

“Oops,” muttered Juniper.

Selena didn’t pay attention to the arrow. She got up suddenly and, after bumping into the tree-she forgot it was there-went out onto the path where Bronson and Rel were.

“Hi Bronson!” she said, “it’s good to see you again. It was so exiting! We went to the festival they're having in the next town and then I got to be in the magic show, only it wasn’t really a magic show because-“

Selena had obviously forgotten all about the danger any of them were in. Juniper cleared her throat. Selena spun around towards her; she had nearly forgotten about her after starting to talk to Bronson.

“Oh, this is my friend from Kendermore, June-I mean Juniper.”

“Juniper Whistlewood,” Juniper introduced herself, “pleased to meet you.” She stuck out her small hand in greeting.

Juniper may have had more sense than Selena, but she was still a kender- for the most part.

“Are you really a knight of Solomnia?” she asked, “and is it true Selly here got to ride on a dragon? What? Oh, right! I’ll take it for granted you’ve already been warned about the-er-monastery?”

((whoa . . . cool!!!!))

Bronson swore as a sudden arrow nearly took his nose off, but relaxed when Selena burst onto the path. Hardly listening to what she was saying, he reached over and grabbed her up in an enormous hug.

"Oh, Selena, I'm so glad you're safe! When Rel had told me you were kidnapped . . . ." He finally let go of her, slightly embarassed and glad it was dark to hide his blushing face. He noticed a smallish figure gabbering on about something, whom Selena introduced as Juniper. He shook her hand kindly. Rel patted both their (Selena and Juniper) heads.

"Yes, actually we have been warned about the monestary, and we know why." Bronson continued. "There's a very powerful stone buried there. Selena gave him a blank stare, blinking a few times in confusion. Powerful *stone*? She was suddenly distracted when she saw that Rel had her whippik. She ran up to her.

"Thanks!" she said, "I wondered if I'd ever see it again! You know, I've had this ever since my Great-Great-Uncle..."

While Selena prattled on to Rel, Juniper stepped up to Bronson.

"So," she said, "what's the plan? I've never seen this monastery before, but I have a feeling Selena wouldn't want to just watch it burn. It would be too late by the time we could send for help, and those monks no doubt have few useful weapons. But when you think about it, there really aren't that many of them." She fingered her whippik. "What do you think?" I will bring justice to those who dare to oppress the kender race, for I am the kenderdefender, and with Fizban's divine help I will... Fizban? "I think we should head back to the village. I'm sure someone there can look ofter you three while I gather up the men and . . .ah . . ." Bronson stopped. Juniper looked hurt, Selena murderous, and Rel like she would disobey regardless. "Or we could all go to the village, rally the warriors, and then head back to the monestary and keep watch until . . . ."

"Until you're all dead!" A rough voice interrupted. They were suddednly ambushed by the men from earlier. Bronson pulled his sword and Rel quickly handed Selena her whippik. Sorry; I know it's taking me forever and a day to reply, but I can't think of anything! I'm having this really important audition for a regional band on Saturday and all I can do is practice. I don't want to just blow this off, though, so if you don't mind, I *promise* I'll have something next week as soon as I can.

IC:Selena looked at Bronson uneasily, not knowing what to do- she knew she shouldn't make a move until he did, what was he going to do?
Juniper slowly pulled an arrow out of her quiver and fitted it into her whippik. It was suddenly knocked out of her hand, however, and she gave a piercing shreik as a small dagger, thrown with great preciseness, pinned her small arm to a tree. Selena ran over to her, forgetting about the peril they were in and knelt down to tend Juniper, when she suddenly felt a blinding pain in her shoulder; she looked over to see an arrow delved into her shoulderblade. She gritted her teeth and tried to reach back to yank it out, but, alas, it was in such a position as she could not reach it from any angle. Grinding her teeth together yet harder, she turned to Juniper and, after finding a rag from her pouches, removed the dagger and bound Juniper's arm tightly with the rag.
She began to see spots before her eyes. She wondered for a moment if they were fireflies, but then everything started to get dark. She felt as if the arrow causing her wound was giving off some sort of malevolent substance, spreading it's malice throughout her entire body. She swayed, and then everything went black as she fell to the ground, unconcious. (OOC: I'm so happy, I think I'll let Bronson be the hero of the day, LOL)
Juniper tried to tell Selena to look out, to get out of the way before it was too late, but no sound would escape her throat. She winced as the arrow hit Selena in the shoulder. She should have defended Selena better than that! she thought, and from the look of the black liquid coming from the arrow head, it was poisoned. She watched as the pale outline she could see of Selena's body grew paler as she became weaker.
"Selena," she croaked through the pain in her arm, though Selena's binding had improved it somewhat, but just then Selena fell unconcious to the ground. Juniper cried out in hatred and made to grab her whippik, but found to her dismay that this would not prove possible when a searing pain shot through her arm. Only then did she notice that the bone was fractured directly between the shoulder and elbow. She held the whippik with her right hand and held the spear-tipped end away from herself, standing over Selena. Selena needed help soon, help which they couldn't get her until they had gotten rid of their foes. Bronson immediately fought, his grandfather's sword painting the forest red. Rel had no weapon to speak of except her might, which proved quite useful until she had pried a sword ("Hmph, such craftmanship is weak . . .it's so little!") from one who's head she had successfully bashed. Together, the two made a rather skilled team and it wasn't long before they had cleared the immediate danger and tended to the wounds. Bronson's cheeck was nicked, Rel's arm had a shallow gash which didn't seem to bother her.

Then, Bronson saw Juniper . . .and Selena. Dropping his sword, he knelt down to the young human girl as the kender babbled and sobbed.

"We have to get her to the monestary . . ." Bronson said. His voice sounded tight, and Rel came around and pulled Juniper a few feet back to give him room. First, though, Bronson broke the arrow and pulled it from Selena's small body. He then ripped a strp of fabric from his shirt and bound the wound. Rel mooed sorrowfully as he worked. "Come on, we have to get to a clearing where my dragon Arrowstar can reach us." Carefully, he lifted Selena and walked briskly, wanting to run but not wanting to jerk her body, with Rel and Juniper close behind. They reached the clearing to find that Arrowstar was waiting above, not wanting to land until the last possible moment because he sensed ambush."Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli, The Fellowship Of The Ring

Juniper hurried along, the pain in her arm getting worse with each step. She knew, after watching the previous battle, that she could trust these two to take care of Selena and lead them all to somewhere safe. She brushed tears from her eyes with the back of her hand and gritted her teeth against the pain. Would they be in time?

Bronson had mentioned a dragon...Juniper looked up when the party reached the clearing to see a great dragon circling above them. She forgot about the pain in her left arm and gaped upward, her mouth hanging open. As only a kender (and apparently Selena ;-) can, she forgot about their current dilemma for a moment and started asking herself questions out loud ("I wonder how fast it can go-could it outrun a red dragon; I wonder how big it is and if it's bigger than the one I saw that time on my way to Flotsam...") Then, her mind returning to their situation, she looked up to Bronson and Rel. "What is he waiting for?" "He senses danger." Bronson replied. Rel looked down at Juniper and noticed the bandaged arm, and lifted the kender easily.

In an instant, Arrowstar dove down to the clearing and landed with a thud. Wasting no time, Bronson and Rel dashed in and mounted, the silver grunted with Rel's added weight, but took off quickly even as more men ambushed the clearing. He caught a spear as it was tossed and easily snapped it, and within moments had taken them out of range.

"To the monestary . . . They'll know how to deal with this poison." Bronson said. The dragon curved to the proper direction. "Comeone, Arrowstar, we don't ahve much time . . ." Bronson urged. Indeed, time was short if they intended to land and heal Selena and Juniper, AND warn the Monks, AND find someone to defend the Monestary. If only Eric were here . . . Bronson caught himself thinking. He sadly shook his head. It's all up to you.

They soon reached the monestary, and in the dead of night the monks spilled from the doors. Bronson explained as best he could everything he thought needed to be done. Selena atended to first, she was the worst off, Juniper next, Rel and himself didn't particularly need attention. Bronson left Rel with directions to light a bonfire if she needed to signal him, and he took off towards the village on Arrowstar in search of help, the entire time his mind straying to the small human girl with his shirt fragment soaked in her blood and his tears, borne on a frantic flight."Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli, The Fellowship Of The Ring

Juniper left Rel and followed the monks as they carried Selena down a long corridor. Her short kender legs, though able to carry her swiftly and stealthily when need be, were having a hard time keeping up with the hurrying humans. She panted and clutched at her throbbing arm. Finally, the corridor led to a large room where the monks placed Selena upon a large stone slab. One of the monks gave out orders to three others to get certain herbs from the garden. These hurried out and for the time being, Juniper was alone with Selena.

“Oh, Selly,” she said, and snuffled, a tear streaming down her cheek. She felt Selena’s face, it was chill as were her pale blue lips; her skin was nearly as white as snowflakes in the winter.

“I never thought to see you like this, Selly,” she whimpered. She shook her, as if she could wake her from her unnatural slumber. “Wake up! Wake up! I swear, Selly, I want to hear one of your Uncle Trapspringer tales! I didn’t mean it when I said I didn’t believe them! I didn’t mean it when I said it would be kinda fun to lead you around by those ropes-well, maybe I *did* mean it, but I wouldn’t have...” Juniper sobbed, “come on, Selly, you just have to get up!”

Juniper thought she heard a dim voice, “Your friend will be fine.” She started and looked up, but the room around her swirled and blurred. She choked on her tears, blinking violently to try to get the room to steady itself.

“I think she’s hysterical, sir,” she heard a voice say, though it sounded quite far off.

“Alright, get me some of the potion from the clerics, that should help her calm down and rest for awhile while we help the girl.”

Juniper, feeling uneasy about the conversation, seeing as, well, it was apparently about herself, started to stumble off, but was scooped up by someone-she couldn’t tell if it was one of the monks or not, things were dimming fast- and started to kick with all her might, but to no avail. She tried hitting, but, upon doing this she was strongly reminded of the fact that her arm was broken and had not been set yet. She screamed out in frustration and whimpered in pain. She felt someone put something to her lips; she tried to push it away, but it was forced harder. She spat and spluttered, but it was finally forced down her throat, as she choked it down. She continued trying to struggle, but was asleep within moments.

Meanwhile, the monks were concocting an antidote for the poison Selena had gotten into her bloodstream.

(OOC: I’m no good at dream sequences, but here goes nothing:)
Selena was lost in a desert. She felt tired and enervated. Things kept becoming blurry. She wandered around, wondering where she was, but also concerned about where her whippik was. She could hear voices around her and kept moving towards them. Suddenly, she thought she heard the voice of Juniper Whistlewood, her best friend back in Kendermore. She began to run towards her voice; she sounded awfully upset and Selena wondered why she was so sad.

“Juniper,” she said, “I’m tired of being on Wanderlust alone. I’m really not feeling very well at all and I think I want to go back to Kendermore and not go on adventures anymore; it’s not so fun after all.”

The sand of the desert started to sway and she was in the ocean. She began to swim, but the waves got larger and larger and seemed as if they meant to pull her under. She began to sink, and she looked up as a large wave loomed above her-when it crashed down it would be all over. Suddenly the wave took the shape of a great minotour; Selena screamed, but just then the shape changed and looked familiar. Suddenly the minotour became real and gently lifted Selena out of the water. She placed Selena on solid ground, and suddenly Selena discovered that she had her whippik. Finally, things were starting to go right!

“Thanks,” said Selena, “hey, I know you; you’re-“ but when she turned around, the minotour was gone. Selena shrugged. She was feeling worse than ever and was only worried about getting home to Kendermore. She wasn’t sure how she got into this desert anyway, all she remembered was trying to get a ship to take her to Palanthas. She began to walk towards Juniper’s voice again, but now it seemed more like an echo than her speech.

She thought she saw something up ahead, she walked even faster towards it, and realized it was a Knight of Solomnia-maybe he could help her. She sure hoped he could because she was feeling worse than ever and she wasn’t sure how much longer she could stand up. She approached him; he turned around and looked at her. Suddenly she began to search her memory-he looked vaguely familiar. A memory came back to her as she began to sway on her feet. “...Bronson?” she asked; he shook his head, “no...hey...are you...?” she started, but swayed. He caught her. He nodded. “I’m sorry; I’m afraid I’m not feeling so well...I’m trying to get to Kendermore you see, and...and,” she couldn’t finish; she was blinking to try to clear things up, but this time it was to no avail and she could hardly see at all.

“Everything will be fine; don't worry. You can tell him I said so,” he said. He put his hand on her forehead and said something in a strange language. His hand felt warm on her chill forehead, and it felt nice but she felt very tired all of a sudden and only wanted to sleep...
She woke up. She focused her eyes and saw that she was in a well-sized room surrounded by praying monks. She got a quizzical look on her face-what was she doing here? Where was the desert? Where was Juniper...and where was her whippik?

“Where am I?” she asked to no one in particular.

Arrowstar sped as his name allowed, and soon he and Bronson landed in the square. The festival had long since ended, dawn seeping over the horizon like a warped hourglass. Before the dragon had fully landed, Bronson was immediately off and running, yelling out in his loudest voice.

"You are at the monestary." The head monk answered Selena's question with a small smile, but voice and eyes marked by grave circumstances. "Your friend Bronson brought you in, you had been poisoned by an arrow, but you have been given an anectdote. It will take you some time before you are fully healed. Now, you have some visitors . . ." He stepped aside as two creatures quickly entered. Rel and Juniper made quite the opposite pair, one immesnly huge the other smaller than Selena herself. Both, however, were in tears to see Selena in a recovering condition.

But the joy did not last for long. Shouts came over the threshold, and the Monk's face grew darker. "Rel, if you would be so kind . . . " Rel nodded and disappeared. Moments later, a large bell that the monks had risen eons ago for emergency started clanging out a harsh warning. Voices and the sound of crackling fire caught their ears, and then running footsteps in the corridor. Then Bronson's face burst in the doorway. He had an immense smile, and was covered in sweat and a couple cuts. "Keep in here. Seal the doors." Juniper turned around, talking to herself. “Sealing the doors? If I want to see this, I’ll have to hurry!” Noticing Selena, she gave her a stern look. “Now, you need to rest, Selly; you’ve only started to recover from the poison and you should get some sleep. It’ll probably be a few days before you go into any more battles, and, ahem, after you’re show of valour in the last one, I think it’s about time you retired from them altogether. Now, I’m going to go help oversee the defenses, but when I come back, you’d better hope you’re still in this bed!”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, June,” said Selena, a puzzled look on her face, “I wouldn’t think about getting up in my condition. It’s kinda nice to just lie her and rest, anyways. You go on ahead to watch the fighting, and I’ll be here when you get back.”

Juniper, giving one last, warning, glance back at Selena, headed out the door, whippik in her right hand, the other one in a splint and make-shift sling the monks no doubt had concocted for her....

Selena *knew* she shouldn’t even think about getting up. She knew that if she *did* think about getting up, she shouldn’t actually *get* up. She knew that if she *got* up, she shouldn’t leave the room, and if she left the room, she shouldn’t go wandering around, trying to find a way out. If she did that, she *certainly* shouldn’t actually leave, and if she left, she certainly shouldn’t go to find her whippik.

After wandering throught the corridors of the monestary for a while, dodging scurrying monks here and there to avoid being put back in bed, Selena decided that she would have to find a window in order to exit, (which she shouldn’t do). She finally found a room with a large window. She heaved a sigh: it was at least twenty feet off the ground if it was an inch. She was certain she could find supplies to scale it with in her pouch, but it sure seemed like a pain, especially seeing as she wasn’t feeling quite herself at the time. It may have had something to do with the poisoned arrow everyone was talking about, but she didn’t have time to think about that-she had to go find her whippik.

She looked up toward the window; through it streamed much light. There were candles in the room, she saw, but none of them were lit. She supposed that they must be for cloudy days or night time or something. A glint of light caught her eye. She turned and raised her eyebrows in delight. Fizban’s alter! (Well, Paladine’s alter as they called it.) While the light from the window lit the entire room, she hadn’t noticed that it was positioned so that the light would shine directly on the Alter of Paladine during any time of day. She heard all the commotion going on outside-she supposed that a quick prayer to Fizban couldn’t hurt. She hadn’t had a talk with him ever since she thought she would be chopped to bits by an angry minotour in the Blood Sea of Istar. She approached the alter and knelt down on one knee.

“You know, Fizban,” she said, “I’ve been through a lot in the past few days. All I ever wanted to do was to take a ship to Palanthas and see if they really have a black tower there that almost touches the sky and if they have thirteen different magic shops and if mages roam the streets just like other people and if they really let kender in without complaining about them. But,” she sighed, “instead, I ended up being captured by minotours- Not that I’m complaining; It was awfully interesting to see some for the first time...Not that I would prefer to go through all that again,” she looked up, giving the ceiling a stern eye.

“ I was rescued by a knight named Bronson- he’s a really nice person, Fizban, I should introduce you sometime, though he’s terribly unpredictable. Rel’s really nice, too, especially for a minotour. She’s also very good about helping me find my whippik, which, by the way, is precicely the reason I’m here in the first place. You see, somehow it keeps loosing track of me and I always have to go looking for it again. Rel isn’t here to help me find it this time-which reminds me: there’s a lot of fighting going on outside and I was wondering if, as a personal favor, you could make sure Rel and Bronson and Juniper-she’s my best friend from Kendermore- are alright. I think it’s the least you could do after letting me get captured and delaying my trip to Palanthas. After all, I’ve told you for years that I was planning to go there- I think you had plenty of time to make arrangements so I wouldn’t be interrupted. So all I’m asking is for you to make sure they come out alright... And I wouldn’t mind a little help finding my whippik, too. You know how I am about finding things. Well, that’s about it, Fizban,” she said, starting to get up, “so I’ll be leaving now. It was nice talking to you.”

Suddenly, as she was getting up, for less than a second there was a brilliant flash of bright light. Selena blinked. She looked around and then shrugged- it must have been the sun reflecting off the alter again.

She would have to climb up to the window now, if she was going to get out of here. It was just lucky she had her pouches handy. She reached into her larger one, the one with all the maps (most of these were ruined by her little voyage out in the Blood Sea of Istar), and pulled out a length of rope. She also pulled out a hook (this she had found on her ship before the attack of the minotours; she would have to give it back to the captain the next time she saw him). She hurriedly fastened the end of the rope through the hole in the base of the hook and tied it in a knot. It took her a few tries to sling the rope properly to get the hook to position correctly. This she accredited to the fact that she wasn’t feeling quite like herself for some reason.

She climbed the rope and quickly as she could- it was stale and salty after getting wet in the ocean and it burned her hands as she climbed up, planting her feet against the wall ( she hoped Fizban didn’t mind that she was walking on his wall, but she considered this a just occasion for it). Finally, however, she was at the top. She looked back down into the room she had been in. It was all dim with her blocking the light from the only window. Something caught her eye. There was something on the alter. Normally, she would ignore it and climb out the window, but curiosity got the best of her. She started to the considerably shorter climb back down.

Selena approached the alter once again, however this time there was something shiny gleaming on it. It looked like a white rock. The sides were jagged and stuck out in several points, like a star. It sparkled different colors as the sunlight streamed directly on it. It was small enough to fit in the palm of her hand. She looked up towards the ceiling, a puzzled expression on her face.

“I’m not sure if this is going to help me much in finding my whippik, Fizban,” she said, “but thanks for the gift. It *is* an awfully pretty rock, nonetheless.” And with that, she slipped the stone into her smallest pouch.

She climbed the rope once more-for some reason she was feeling much better now then she had before. Once down the rope on the other side, and, after several failed attempts, the rope was back in her pouch, she started to head for the forest, making sure no one saw her.

Meanwhile:

Juniper wasn’t having much luck finding an exit that wasn’t already sealed- she had to hand it to them, the monks worked quite fast when it came to defending this monestary of theirs. She walked around, asking a monk here and there if they knew a way out. They all answered in the negative.

She scuffed her shoes on the floor as she headed back to the infirmirary to tell Selena the bad news that there was no way out. She hoped Selena was doing alright-she’d seemed kind of pale when Juniper last saw her. Then again, who wouldn’t look like that after being poisoned and nearly dying?

Juniper stopped short upon reaching the infirmirary-where was Selena? She stepped into the room.

“Selly?” she called. “This is just great: first there’s no way out and I miss out on all the action, and now Selly has decided to play hiding games when she should be in bed resting. Why, I’m going to have a stern talk with that human when I find her.” She trotted out of the room after doing a thorough search of it just to make sure Selena truely wasn’t there.

After checking nearly every room in the monestary, Juniper came upon a much larger one than the others. She noticed there was way out of this one: a large window nearly thirty feet off the floor. She noticed that the light streamed onto the alter of Paladine. This must be where they congregated to worship him, she thought.

She turned her attention back to the window-there was something suspicious about it. She started at it for several moments before noticing what it was. There were footprints on the wall leading up to it! Well, if a human could do it, she could certainly do it.

She removed a legnth of rope and a griphook from her pouches and fastened them properly. Within a matter of seconds, she was on the ground on the other side. She wondered which way the person had gone- they were no doubt a theif of some sort. Perhaps they had been after that stone that the Solomnic Knight had told them about. What if the theif had already stolen it and made off with it?

She looked around: The townspeople and Bronson too, no doubt had enough on their hands to deal with-it was up to her to accomplish this. She noticed some very light footprints upon the grass- if it weren’t for her elven heritage, she wouldn’t have noticed them. She saw that they led into the forest and from there she couldn’t tell from this distance. She began to follow them into the forest, stealthily avoiding anyone who might cause a problem for her.

Bronson, Arrowstar, and Rel were able to successfully order the mis-matched warriors from the town, who seemed quite determined to uphold the Monestary.

At first, nothing had happened. Then, figures appeared at the edge of the forest. A few flame-tipped arrows shot towards the building. A few burrowed their way into the walls, but Arrowstar soon found his use in destracting them. Finally, neither side could do with waiting and in what seemed a unanimous decision, they rushed each other., meeting halfway between forest and Monestary. Bronson was glad to have had the insight to break from a winning battle early and warn the monks, he couldn't supervise everything at once. He was blazing with courage and surity at the outcome, yet a burning desire within him kept him alive during that fight . . . .

He had almost lost her, but he knew she was safe now, and he knew she would recover. A plan started to develope in his mind as he bore his enemies to the ground. He would personally excort her -- dragonback -- to Palanthas. The thought of this endeavor kept his mind ablaze and his swings true.

Rel had been supplied an axe, which greatly sufficed her tastes. Heads fell easily if they reached too close to her. For once in her life, she felt on top, and not struggling to reach the peak admist the horrific competition that was her race. The only reason she had lived as long as she had was solely due to Syk. The thought of her, now gone, caused Rel to attack her next vistim with particular wrath. But here, she did not need Syk, she could live on her own, by her own rules. Selena followed the path through the forest in the dim light. She hadn't been following it very long, but she was already getting a little bored and wondering how much longer it would take. Suddenly, she heard a noise in the trees to her right.
"Who's there?" she asked, but there came no reply. She wandered into the trees to see what it was...

Juniper followed the footprints-much clearer now that they were on the path in the forest- farther and farther. Then she decided that she needn't follow the footprints anymore, they seemed to be following the path, so that's what she would follow. She thought she heard a noise up ahead and ran up the trail. There was no one there. She shrugged and kept walking...

Selena heard the noise again once she had gotten a little off the path. She followed the sound. She saw a bush move up ahead. She crept up on it, and then sprang forward- a terrified squirrel ran out the other side and dashed into the forest.
"Oh..." she said, "Oops."
She found her way back onto the path to continue the search for her whippik.

Juniper continued on the path until she happened upon the clearing where the small battle had taken place earlier. She saw something familiar up ahead. She approached it and found that it was Selena's whippik. She picked it up (she didn't have her own with her). Suddenly, she heard something coming up the path. She scurried into the brush, Selena's whippik in hand.

"This is where the battle was earlier, if I remember correctly," she heard someone saying to themselves-the voice sounded awfully familiar. "But where's my whippik?"

Juniper slapped herself on the forhead. Selly and her whippik! She sighed and shook her head: so much for the "thief" she was looking for.

Selena stood in the middle of the clearing, dim light barely seeping through the dense canopy of the forest. She looked left, right, up, down and turned a few circles, but didn't see her whippik anywhere.

"Where could my whippik be?" she asked herself worriedly, then a horrible thought struck her: "What if someone took it? What if someone has it and they're taking it far far away and who knows what they're doing with it?" She got an anxious look on her face, but just at that moment a small but strong hand grabbed her ear from below.

"Selena Arrowbaum! I thought you said you were staying in bed and resting-you're in no condition whatsoever to be up and about! You and your whippik!" she tried to say this last declaration incredulously, but, being from Kendermore herself and knowing what a whippik meant, Juniper didn't quite muster the effect she had hoped for.

Selena, now stooped over to lessen the pain to her ear from Juniper's merciless grasp on it, had no time to get a word in edgewise before Juniper was off on a full scale kender monologue. Then something caught Selena's eye: Juniper had her whippik! Selena looked at it fixedly. Juniper realized that she wasn't listening and then saw what she was looking at.
"Oh this? Yes I found it for you. You act as if you'll never see it again every time it's out of your sight, Selly!" And with that she gave Selena her whippik, grabbed her by the hand and, before Selena could get a word of appreciation in, Juniper was back on her list of the top 100 reasons why Selena shouldn't have gone out to find her whippik and hurriedly, half-dragged her through the forest. Bronson whooped, raising his sword high into the air as the enemy retreated. There was a gash on his arm and a cut on his head flowed freely, but neither were serious and only of minor pain to him. Rel barely had a scratch on her, and that having only come from a rogue pickerbush. She was still picking the burrs from her fur as Bronson slapped her on the back congratulatory, and made his way back up to the monestary.

Once they had cleared the main entrance, Bronson bolted inside and ran about, calling Selena's name. The monks, already busy cleaning up their refuge, were occupied as something suddenly seemed to creep its way into Bronson's stomach. He came to the room where she had been sleeping, but it was empty. He called futilely, then rushed back outside to where Rel was standing, now picking berries off the pickerbush and munching on them contentedly.

"Rel, have you seen Selena?"

Rel furrowed her furry brow and shook her head, swallowing the lucious berries. "She was resting . . ."

"Where ever she is now, she's not resting." Bronson muttered. He looked into the forest. "I wonder . . . but it's not possible, is it? We secured the monestary long before they . . ." He fell silent in thought. "I'm going to search the forest . . ."

Rel looked at him. "But the enemy has just fled there . . . you can't do it alone . . ." She started to heft her axe, but Bronson stopped her.

"It'll be safer if I go alone . . ."

Rel growled in dissatisfaction. "They'll kill you if they find you . . ."

"Which just means they won't find me . . .but I must find Selena."

Rel shook her head. "She's my friend too . . ."

Bronson paused for a moment, running his hand through his hair. Though he was in relatively little pain, blood stained his clothes and hair. "Okay, but remember; we have to remain quiet, they above all must not know we're there."

Rel nodded.

"Right then . . ." Bronson said. He and Rel took a moment to secure their weapons to reduce clanking, and then took off into the dark woods.

Meanwhile, the remaining humans who had assaulted the Monestary were running pell-mell through the forest. One turned to shoot and arrow into the darkness, in case he was being followed, and tripped over a root, landing face to face with Selena and Juniper.

Before either girls could react, he yelled at the others to stop, looking upon Juniper and Selena as if he had a grand new scheme in his head.

"Don't be scared, little ones, my friends and I will help you through the forest, stay with us and you'll be safe . . ."

OOC: sorry it took so long, i didn't know you'd finish by editing, so I didn't see it. :)

IC:
Juniper continued to half-drag Selena through the forest, following the path they had used to get there. She was continuing to scold Selena, even though the relieved tone in her voice couldn't be hidden by any amount of malisons.

Selena wasn't paying very good attention to her friend's tirade; she was daydreaming. She thought about all the events that had ensued since the beginning of her journey. At this rate she'd reach Palanthas in about a thousand years. She counted on her fingers...only to come to the conclusion that she didn't *have* a thousand years. Her pouches felt lighter than ever thinking about never seeing the big city with all of its interesting sights and, no doubt, objects. Her hand brushed across one of her pouches, her smallest one. Well there was something in there at least. She reached her free hand in-the other in a death grip of Juniper's-and felt the object. She reckognized the glossy yet jagged edges of the rock she had found on Fizban's alter earlier. She pulled it out and started inspecting it.

Suddenly, and certainly uncharacteristically of herself, she thought, she tripped over her own feet (they're kinda tricky when you're not paying attention to them...she should keep an eye on them more often) and-accidently yanking Juniper along with her-tumbled down a ravine at least fifty feet tall though not very steep.

When they finally tumbled to a stop, Juniper lay stunned, unable to decide which to yell at Selena about first: the fact that they were lost or the fact that her splint was broken and she was in pain from her arm again and would have to make a new one before they could start out again. She had just opened her mouth to start her tirade-she had decided instead of the other two things, she would start with telling Selena to get off of her (she had landed on top of Juniper after they tumbled down the slope)-when Selena jumped up and bolted around, looking for something on the ground.

"Selena," she began heatedly, "what in the Abyss are you-"
"Shhh! My rock!" she said, "I must have dropped it when I fell! Help me look for it." Whippik in hand, Selena began to scan the ground for it.
Juniper's mouth flopped open. If Selena thought she was going to help her find some stupid rock-which probably didn't even exist-she had another thing coming.

The next thing she knew, Juniper was on her hands and knees combing the ground. She told herself that she was trying to find a fallen limb suitable for making a temporary splint(or at least big enough to knock some sense into Selena with).

Suddenly she thought she heard something on the other side of some tall pines on the slope.

"Selena," she began, "do you hear..."

Selena, thinking Juniper may have found something, got down on her hands and knees next to her friend. There was a tumbling sound and suddenly a young man was sprawled in front of them. Juniper drew back from surprise and Selena's eyes became as big as saucers with shock.

"Don't be scared, little ones, my friends and I will help you through the forest, stay with us and you'll be safe . . ." he said.

Selena sighed and smiled thankfully. Well, even if she couldn't find the rock Fizban gave her, at least these men were here and willing to lead them safely through the forest. Whippik in hand, she graciously accepted his offer and, tugging Juniper along by her good arm, followed them through the forest.

While Selena chattered away with the men ("Wow! those are really big swords! You're really strong, too. Are you mercenaries? Have you ever been to Palanthas? I've never been, but I'm going there really soon! I may even get to go on a dragon..." and so on), Juniper was doing some thinking. She had quickly yet efficiently made a splint for her upper arm with a fallen branch she found along the way and two leather thongs. It still hurt from being jostled before, but wasn't nearly as bad.

Suddenly Juniper frowed, mumbled something to herself, then her eyes opened wide and she ran up and tugged Selena's arm. Selena looked irrated at the interruption-she was in the middle of telling them about the time her Uncle Trapspringer had pulled a minotours tooth- though the men, having been listening to her for the past half hour, were somewhat relieved. Finally, sensing something was amiss, Selena dropped back with Juniper.

"Selly, I don't trust these men," said Juniper.

"What do you mean, June?" asked Selena indignantly, “They seem alright to me. And I’m a pretty good judge of character, you know. Why, wasn’t I right about Bronson when-“

“Shh! Just listen to me for a minute, Selly,” Juniper said urgently. When it was apparent she had Selena’s reluctant opinion, she looked at her earnestly and continued. “Selena,” she said, “when we were heading back to the monastery before, we were heading into the sun, now its at our backs. Do you know what that means?”

“That we’ll get an even tan?” Selena guessed.

Juniper slapped her own forehead, then, after a few deep, calming breaths, said, “No, Selly. What it means is that we’re heading the opposite direction that we were before. In other words, we’re heading away from the monastery, not back to it. These men aren’t leading us back where we belong.”

“Where then?” asked Selena, her voice tinged with curiosity.

“I don’t know,” she answered, “I don’t know.”

Selena’s hand brushed against her pouch again. There was something in it! She reached in avidly and pulled out...Fizban’s rock!

“Now how did that get there?” she asked herself, then put it back into her pouch before it could be seen. Well, wherever they were leading them, judging by the size of their weapons, Selena and Juniper had little choice in the matter of following them. Selena shrugged; Juniper was too worried anyway-if these men meant to lead them to harm they could have done so already. She skipped ahead to finish telling her Uncle Trapspringer tale.

Juniper shook her head; Selena didn’t get it. She had a fleeting thought of sneaking away and going to find Bronson, but quickly discarded it. She could probably find her way back to the monastery through the forest, but she didn’t dare leave Selena alone with these scoundrels. Who knew when they would snap from too many Uncle Trapspringer tales? A worried look on her face, she hurried to keep up. She looked back- where was Bronson, anyway?

Quietly, carefully, Rel and Bronson followed the path of snapped twigs and footprints deeper into the forest, but as they failed to find anything, Bronson started getting worried.

"I've lost her, Rel, she's gone . . ." He started saying.

"We'll find her, and I'm sure she can take care of herself." Rel said, trying to cheer him up. "Wait, look!" Their path had been taking them along a ridge, one side of which dipped into a deep ravine. Rel found a hap-hazard trail -- more like debris path -- and followed it down, periodically bending over and picking things off the ground. When she reached the bottom, she turned triumphantly at Bronson, brandishing two handfuls of shiny objects. "Proof we are on the right path!" She said.

Bronson slid down the ravine and looked at everything in Rel's hands. Various pieces of jewelry, shiny rocks, and a piece of string. Most definately something you would find in Selena's pouches! Rel handed them to Bronson and he pocketed it, more for good luck than anything else. They searched the surrounding area until they found footprints leading back up, and quickly followed those.

Meanwhile, Selena's tales had soon grown old.

Very old.

So old, some of he men started to hear mold grow on them. That old.

This, needless to say, frazzled the poor men, and in a bout of greedy anger, one of them suddenly turned on Selena, grabbing her up by the front of her shirt and ramming her none too lightly against a tree, holding a knife against her neck.

"You idiot!" Someone yelled. Another looked around for Juniper ((I'll let you decide if he catches her or of she escapes))

"Come on, just let me, please! Just think of all the pain we'll be spared when she's no longer talking!"

This was very tempting.

"We'll need her, if we're ever to get that stone!"

The man holding Selena against the tree growled, but did not let her go.

"We'll have to search her now that she knows." Someone said. He approached and started going through her pouches as the other held her against the tree . . . .

Selena was having an awfully fun time telling these nice men her stories. She couldn't remember anyone-outside of Kendermore-listening to her for quite this long. She noticed that the cords on their necks and the temples in their forheads had turned red and were starting to jut out as if from some sort of stress-she figured it must be the suspense of her story. She tried to hurry it up so they wouldn't have to worry about whether or not her Uncle Trapspringer was eaten by the bugbear or not. This one was always a thriller.

She was just debating over which tale to tell them next when she was suddenly violently slammed against a tree by one of the men. (See if she told *him* any more of her stories!) There was some commotion. The next thing she knew, they were going through her precious pouches! Seeing as one of them had a knife to her throat, her whippik didn't seem like such a good idea. She heard one of them mention a stone...

MEANWHILE...

Juniper ran faster than she had ever ran before, and that was saying something (she had come in second place in a race at the spring festival in Kendermore a decade ago, though whether or not she should be allowed the award had been debated because of her elven heritage, much to her dismay). The jolting pain each fleeting step caused her broken arm meant nothing-every precious second mattered. When she had left Selena, the man had had his knife to her throat. She thought for a moment of looking back-even now it might be too late. She could hear another of the men, making no attempt whatsoever to mask the sound of his movements, gaining on her, his long human legs covering nearly twice the distance hers did, though hers were swifter.

Should she have left Selena behind? Should she have stayed and helped? No, she told herself; to have done so would have been foolish-meaning both their deaths. If she could only get back to the monestary and reach Bronson, he may be back in time to save Selena, or at least avenge her...

Selena winced as she watched pouch after pouch be pilfered by the men. The leader among them had told the one going through her possessions to take anything of value. She noticed many things he missed. He didn't even take a second look at the ball of string she had collected from a black robed apprentice (now with only half a black robe) in Flotsam, or the piece of leather that came from the armor of a squire she had met. She figured if he overlooked these things, there was no doubt he would overlook this stone he was looking for.

Speaking of the stone, she had only recently come to the conclusion that the stone they were so worked up about must be the stone Fizban had given her. While she didn't exactly relish the thought of parting with it-after all, how often did Fizban give anyone a present?- she was feeling generous, very generous indeed ( she found it amazing just how generous it is possible to feel with a knife at your throat). She decided that if it meant all that much to them, she would just give it to them...

Juniper took in quick gasps for air, a great stitch in her side getting larger by the moment. She had only begun to run about two minutes ago, but she knew she couldn't go on much longer at this speed. She could hear the man in the distance still tearing through the underbrush behind her as quickly as ever before-these men must be experienced, she thought, and in top shape to be able to go on like this. Maybe I underestimated them! Any attempt she had made to evade him had not worked thus far. Deciding to stick to the path, she had only hoped that she could last him out until she reached the monestary. But that was still so far away...

The cramps in her legs were increasing; she was out of breath. Suddenly, she heard a noise on the path ahead of her (It's Bronson and Rel, but she doesn't know that). No! she thought, not more of them! I'm trapped! Tripping over a root in her preoccupied thoughts, she fell to the ground. She tried with all her strength to get back up and run, she needed to run...but she couldn't. Her legs would not support her. They were gaining...on both sides of her...it was only a matter of which one was first, then she would be dead too. She curled up and began to whimper. "She's dead," she moaned to herself, "she's gone and it's all my fault!" she repeated over and over as Bronson and Rel closed in on her, though she cringes as she can not see them for her hands covering her face...

After going through Selena's first three pouches, the man chose yet another one. Selena, deciding now to be truthful and let them have the stone, interjected as he selected another pouch (not the one with the stone).

"Oh, you won't find the stone in there," she said emphatically, "you're just wasting your time looking."

"Is that so?"said the leader, then focused his attention on the man pilfering her pouches, "turn that one inside out; I don't want a single bauble overlooked!"

Selena started to say something, but the sword pricked the skin on her neck and she felt a tiny stream of warm blood trickle down to her chest. The man pulled out a rock-Selena recognized it as a rock she had found on the shore of Flotsam before it was time for the ship to leave. She didn't remember putting it in her pouch, but then again that went for almost everything in any of her pouches.

"That's it!" exclaimed the leader of the mercenaries, "That's the stone! We've found it!"

"Actually," said Selena, now that the man with the sword was a little distracted, "that's not it; you see, I found that rock on the shore in Flotsam. I thought it was the perfect likeness of an ogre I once saw a drawing of, though now that I see it next to you, I do believe there may be some resembl-"

"Enough of your lies!" he said. When the man who had gone through her pouches started to say something, he turned on him. "Of course she won't admit this is the stone-she wants it for herself, you fool! Well," he said, rounding on Selena again, a menacing look on his face, "I'll show you what we do with liars-we've got what we want and you'll get what's coming to you." He took his sword from his scabbard, raised it above his head, and...

Bronson nearly tripped over Juniper, catching himself and falling rather to the side of her instead. Rel leaned down and asked if she was alright as Bronson righted himself and stood. It wasn't long before the human burst upon them, but seeing Bronson in his solamnic armor draw a broadsword from his side made the man change his mind and turn back to his comrades.

"Stay here with Juniper." Bronson said to Rel. "I'm going to get Selena."

"But . . ." Rel started.

Bronson's mind made up, Rel understood. There was little chance either of them would live. Gingerly, the minotaur hefted Juniper off the ground and headed back to themonestary.

Bronson tore through the forest, and finally caught the man and cut him down. The trail wasn't ahrd to follow; it was a path of broken debris almost wide enough for an ox-cart. No pain was any trouble to him, and hinderance, but rather that which pushed him on, since he knew that Selena would probably suffer more -- if not suffering more already -- than he was at that moment.

Her burst into the fray as the man had lifted his sword. With a yell, Bronson's sword swung a wide arc through the air, catching everyone off guard. The man who's sword was bove his head soon had no head to have a sword above. Selena was dropped and forgotten as the men drew and swarmed Bronson.

"Run!" Bronson advised her, "Back to the monestary! Juniper and Rel are there!" As he yelled, he swung at his assailants. He seemed to be holding himself well against them, one against somewhere around ten, but he could not last, and he knew this. If Selena would just go, then I'd know she'd be safe . . . He thought with dispair.

Rel ran back to the Monestary, hoping Juniper wasn't too aggrevated by the jostlings to her arm, but they had to move fast, Rel had a plan, but it had to be started now, and perhaps it woulnd't even work then. As they reached the monestary, she set Juniper by the entrance and whistled through her fingers. A silver creature soon flew into sight and landed by the minotaur.

"Arrowstar, your master is in the forest, and he needs your help." She said, hoping the urgency in her voice would get across to the dragon if her words didn't. Something seemed to register, thankfully, and he leapt to the sky and soared above the forest."Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli, The Fellowship Of The Ring

Leave? Leave? How could he ask her to leave? Selena took a step back as Bronson waved his arm at her, urging her to flee. She looked behind her, the path was clear; she could run down it to safety, go get help.... She turned around, the men were steadily closing in on Bronson-she would never be in time. Every second made the peril they were in more real for her.

She could barely see Bronson’s head for the men surrounding him. She had to act fast if she was going to do anything to help. But what to do? She fumbled through her pouches. Suddenly, her hand came across something hard and jagged. It was the stone. She pulled it out. It hadn’t done her much good, she thought fleetingly. She wondered if Fizban had given it to her for decoration. Not that she had anything to decorate, except her pouches, of course. Then again-

She gasped-suddenly the stone emanated a blinding flash of brilliant white light. Startled, she threw it into the air, and it landed in the fray of men. Well, whatever that was, she thought, I hope it does Bronson more good than it's done me. She heard a swooping sound overhead; it was Arrowstar. He couldn’t get in, however, because of the dense trees. He tried at many angles to get in, but could not position himself where he could ensure he would hurt only their enemies and not Bronson himself, as he was surrounded by men.

“Arrowstar!” called Selena. The dragon might not be of much help, but she knew who would be! She climbed the nearest tree, taking only a matter of seconds to aim an arrow at one of the men and shoot him down. Then, not wanted their attention completely on her, seeing as the rest of her arrows were on the ground with the other contents of her searched pouches, she climbed the rest of the way up. Arrowstar swooped down and she leaped up and onto his back, clinging to his neck.

“We need to get back to the monastery,” she told him, “and please hurry!”

Within mere seconds, Arrowstar had landed at the monastery. Selena went to find Rel, to tell her that they needed her help in the forest. She also wondered where Juniper was; she began to search the grounds, calling for them.

Arrowstar waited outside of the monestary, everything but patient, always looking back towards the forest and bellowing sadness and anxiety for his rider. Selena could find Rel and Juniper in the room where Selena herself had been healed, except now the minotaur was trying to get the kender to stay, and was having no luck whatsoever. When Selena would find them, Rel looked about ready to break Juniper's legs.

Meanwhile, Bronson lost his grip on his sword and collapsed. four of the men remained, and Bronson's strength was gone. As the men bore in around him, however, his hand brushed over a small stone. There was a bright flash as he touched it, sending the four men staggering back and shielding their eyes.

"He has it, he has the stone!" someone yelled.

Bronson had little idea what was going on, but knew that whatever stone it was he had it was quite useful. He held it shakily aloft and it continued to radiate pure white, and then suddenly a streak of white shot up towards the heavens.

The men were blown from their feet, and landed with cracking bones and pained yells. Bronson's hand held the stone aloft more easily now, since it was nothing more than a warm, slightly pulsing weight in his hand. Healing powers of some sort drifted down his arm and mended the various cuts and abrasions as he continued to lift it high.

Back at the monestary, Arrowstar roared loudly; a bright white column had just issued from the forest and was gathering a great amount of clouds, blocking out the stars and moons and making the earth nearly bright as midday.

Selena searched frantically around the monastery for Rel. She heard sounds of a heated argument in the infirmirary and followed them. She walked in to find Rel trying to persuade Juniper to stay put while she left. Juniper was apparently being anything but cooperative. Selena burst into the room. They didn't have time for this; Bronson was in big trouble!!

"Juniper! Bronson's in a lot of trouble and the only thing you can do to help him right now is stay put and let Rel and me go help him!" Selena shouted, exasperated after the time it had took her to find them and the time it would take her to get back to Bronson. She could hear Arrowstar roar outside-was it already too late?

Juniper started to protest once again, reasoning that if they would only get her her whippik, she would be able to help. "I didn't want to do this, June," she muttered under her breath, reaching into her pouch to find the remnants of her sleeping powder. Without hesitation, she blew it into Juniper's face and within seconds the part-kender's protests had become mutterings in an uneasy sleep. Selena put her in a bed.

Selena grabbed Rel's hand, thought the minotaur seemed all too willing to get outside. "We've got to hurry!" she shouted, "We've got little time-if any! When I left, Bronson was surrounded..." she trailed off, unable to continue.

She stopped dead when she reached the exit. Her mouth opened in awe at the sight of the beam of light emanating from the middle of the forest. Arrowstar's impatient growls shook her to the present and she followed Rel onto him. She shielded her eyes as they approached the fierce brightness in the spot where she had last seen Bronson.

"Rel," she shoutedd over the wind roaring in their ears, "what is that light?"

"I don't know!" Rel shouted back. Arrowstar suddenly balked, letting out a grunt and turned away from the light. He circled the beam, but did not stray near it or nearer to the ground.

"Down, you beast, down!" Rel yelled at him, "You master needs you!"

Arrowstar's resonating moans seemed to agree with Rel, however he did not allow himself any nearer to the ground or the beam. In fact, periodically he would suddenly balk a little further away, until the beam they were circling was now a good fifty feet.

Bronson felt the rock's great power as it rejuvenated him and kept the men at bay. Someone had called for help and the forest was now alive with the remainders of the men's army, all waiting at the perimeter of light until it was safe. Bronson wasn't sure how much longer that would be; he didn't have the slightest idea what he was holding or how he could use it, but somehow the rock seemed to have a mind of its own and decided for him.

Bronson suddenly felt immersed in warmth and a strange protection. Sound seemed muted, like trees swaying in a breeze on a far off hill, or the ocean from a mile inland. He wasn't sure what was going on, he couldn't see, and so he closed his eyes and waited.

From above, Arrowstar suddenly gave a trumpeting yell. The very base of the beam, hardly visible through the trees, suddenly seemed to well up in a white and blue swirling bubble. Then, there was a loud explosion and a wave of reddish air rocked from the bubble and shot outwards through the forest. Rel and Selena could see them men in the brightness as they were caught in the shockwave and suddenly drop as if the life had been taken from them. Then, everything dissapated, the light faded from the sky and the ground, and the bubble receeded into the dark form of a man which kneeled for a moment, and then fell over weakly. It was then that Arrowstar descended enough for them to dismount, though he himself still did not have room."Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli, The Fellowship Of The Ring

Selena nearly toppled to the ground in her hurry to get off of Arrowstar and down to Bronson. She tried to leap off a high branch of the tree she was shinnying down, but her foot got caught and she watched, upside down, as Rel went down ahead of her to Bronson. She glared at her foot, reaching up and grabbing it. "Stupid shoe," she said, "always causing trouble." One of the cotton laces she used to keep it on tight had gotten knotted up in a cluster of twigs. It would take longer than she had to unknot it. So she reached up and pulled one of the strings, untying the lace. She hadn't been able to put her finger on what was wrong with this plan until she felt herself falling.

She did a summersault in the air and landed with a {thud} on her back, winded. Unharmed, however, once the stars stopped spinning before her eyes, she jumped up and ran over to where Rel was with Bronson, who lay on the ground.

"Is he okay? What was that? Bronson never told me he could do magic tricks, " she said. Noticing something in his hand, she opened his palm to see what it was. "Fizban's rock!" she said under her breath. Somehow her pouch ended up heavier once she found the stone was no longer in her grasp.

Bronson moaned, turning his head back and forth.

"Bronson, wake up!" Rel said.

"Palanthas . . ." Bronson moaned. "Selena . . . . She's . . ."

"She's here." Rel said comfortingly.

"She's in danger!" Bronson suddenly sat up, and looked around dazedly. "What . . . what happened? Selena . . ." He said, noticng her. He took her face in his hands. "Are you all right?" He whispered.

Selena drew back a little out of surprise as Bronson suddenly bolted upright from the ground and cupped her face in his hands.

"Are you alright?" he asked her quietly.

She nodded, a bit confused. Shouldn't *she* be asking *him* that question? Her face broke into a puzzled smile as she attempted to sort it all out.

"Oh, I'm fine, thank you," she said, "are *you* alright? That was an awfully amazing light you made there! A bit bright, though...And I daresay it didn't do those men much good, did it? Then again, I don't care about that," she said, looking up in thought. She looked back to him.

"Can you make it back? If you can't walk the whole way, we'll have a time helping you up those trees to your dragon (a *very* fast one, as we've discovered). Though I suppose I need to make a trip up there anyway to, um, settle something." Bronson took a few moments to fully return to the present, suddenly feeling guilty for frightening Selena. Rel Left them and awkwardly scrambled up the tree to save Selena's shoe. Arrowstar, sensing danger gone, had diasappeard to a nearby clearing where he could land.

"I'll be okay." Bronson said. He looked at his arms where they had been nicked and cut earlier. They were unharmed. He knelt and held his head in his hand, giving a shuddering sigh, and then looked up at Selena and smiled. "I think I'll be able to make it." He said, slowly rising. He stood, wavered for a moment, and then looked down at Selena and held out his hand for her. Selena took Bronson's hand and stood up. As always, he was the most unpredictable person she had ever met. One moment he was shouting at her to get back to the monastery, the next he was glad to see her back out here away from it. She smiled; unpredictable was fun, not like most knights she had heard about.

After thanking Rel for getting her shoe back and putting it back on, she began to walk along with them.

OOC:I can't really write much more because I'm not sure if they're walking back to the monestary (since he asked if she would escort him back) or if they're riding on Arrowstar (since he landed in a clearing instead of just flying back). :):):) I will bring justice to those who dare to oppress the kender race, for I am the kenderdefender, and with Fizban's divine help I will... "I think Arrowstar is over this way." Rel said, heading over to where she had seen a glimpse of siler through the trees.

Bronson walked in silence, smiling, then suddenly he frowned.

"Wait, what about the stone?"

Selena stopped short in her strides. The stone? She had nearly forgotten it. Now that he mentioned it, she had no idea where it was. The last she remembered, she was holding it in her hand...

"You're right," she said, "We can't just leave it lying around here where anyone could find it and shine it in people's eyes or step on it and get hurt."

Selena stooped down to inspect the nearby ground. As she did, the stone fell out of her pouch, of which she had forgotten to close the flap over.

"Now, how did that get there?" she asked with genuine curiosity. "Well," she turned brightly to Bronson and Rel, paying no heed to the fact that they seemed to have expected this to happen, "it looks like we found it!"

MEANWHILE:

Juniper opened her eyes; the room was spinning madly. She closed them again and waited a few moments before opening them again. It appeared she had been moved to the bed Selena had laid on before. Her arm had had its splint replaced and she must have been given something for the pain, for her arm smelled funny and felt numb.

Why had she been asleep? Aaah, Selena...the sleeping powder. She remembered now not wanting to stay while there were adventures to take part in. After all, she was one of the (many) reknowned adventurers from Kendermore...and ambassador to adventurism...or something like that, you might say. She looked at her arm. This-hindrance- was nothing. Next time, she would be one step ahead of Selena before she could try any funny stuff again.

Juniper stood up. She waivered. Her legs gave out and she fell back to the "bed". Perhaps, she decided, I'm tireder than I thought, and not just from the sleeping powder. She could barely remember the last time she had slept...in doors...no worries.... She leaned back, yawning, and closed her eyes again. It couldn't hurt to take a quick nap, just to be ready when the others came back. Yeah, next time she would be one step ahead of them....
She curled up on her side and fell into a deep sleep (aww! how cute! LOL).

Bronson took the rock and tossed it into the air, catching it and putting it in a side pouch of his own, pulling the flap tightly closed. He looked at Selena and smiled, holding his hand out again.

"I'm sure they'll want to congradulate you back at the monestary for finding the stone." They walked out into the clearing where Arrowstar was patiently waiting, mounted the dragon, and then sped back to the monks house. "We'll only be staying a short time, though. Just my whippik and my pouches- so empty, though she had managed to gather a few of her belongings back into them earlier after making sure Bronson was alright, including her arrows and a few of her baubles and trinkets)
(It turned out to be a good thing that Bronson had squeezed her hand at that particular moment, or else she very well might have fallen off of the dragon in her plethora of thoughts.) Bronson wanted to get on their way quickly once they reached the Monestary, he was afraid that if he left Selena and Juniper alone for too long, they'd end up starting another adventure and no one would ever make it to Palanthas!

So it was that he forgot to mention the stone, and the monks continued to think it was safely buried under their alter.

Later that day, they were flying off towards Palanthas. Arrowstar hadn't been able to carry everyone, so he took Selena and Bronson and Bronson had called Eric's copper Salmon to carry Rel and Juniper.

As she watched the view from far above the ground, Selena decided that riding dragons was most definitely one of her favorite things to do. Then she remembered that she should cross it off of her list of Top Ten Things I'd Like to do Most and put it her list of Top Ten Things I've Done Before and Want to Do Again. She was just fumbling through her pouch to retrieve the two parchments (little did she know that they were somewhere near the bottom of the Blood Sea of Istar) when she noticed something in the distance. She pulled out a map and gingerly unrolled it.

"Oh," she said, interestedly,"that would be Neraka."

However interesting it may sound, she told herself drolly, we won't be going there any time soon. She put the map back in her pouch and began calculating how long it would be until they arrived at Palanthas.

Bronson instructed Arrowstar and Salmon to skirt around Neraka. "That is one place you don't want to visit, Selena, trust me." Bronson said. He was trying to keep a saf distance, but as it were he was silently praying to Paladine for a safe passage.

Juniper sat atop Salmon and looked down at the ground, intrigued by the vast distance between herself and the ground. (How interesting it would be, she mused, to fall from way up here.) She subconciously leaned down over the side of the dragon, her eyes livid with her thoughts. (Down, down, the wind rushing past your face, your arms spread out like a bird's wings...) She shook her head and sat up, startled at her own thoughts. Sometimes, she was a little more kender than she cared to admit. Telling Rel of her adventures in several parts of eastern Ansalon had gotten old after awhile, and she sat quietly-well, as quietly as could be expected.

She reminded herself why she was here. It was because of Selena. She had been quite shocked upon seeing Selena up on the stage during the magic show she was passing by. She hadn't really planned to stay in the area very long. She had been thinking of going back to Kendermore for a while. Not that a visit there was due, but she had just wanted to check up on things, catch up with old friends, and the like. Seeing Selena come down from the stage, she had started to run up to greet her, then noticed she seemed to be looking for someone. Deciding to see who, Juniper had followed. She had watched from the side of the stage what had transpired and followed....thus she was here. Luckily, her arm had been healed by a cleric at the monestary, though it still hurt a little now and then.

A flapping sound in the distance caught her attention. She looked behind them, but didn't see anything. Sure she had heard something, albeit a small sound, she turned to Rel.

"Did you hear something?" she asked Rel.

((would you mind if I invited someone to join us? I want to keep going but I'm running out of ideas!!!))

Rel flicked her ear at Juniper's comment. "It's hard to hear anything with this wind!" She said loudly.

Salmon glanced at Arrowstar, a growl quipping in his throat. Arrowstar replied with another growl and Bronson turned in his seat.

"By the gods of . . . Arrrgh!" Bronson yanked harshly at the reigns and pulled Arrowstar in a straight line away from Neraka. Salmon followed suit. The reds, realizing they had been discovered, flanked the silver and bronze, nipping at them menacingly . . . .

(OOC: No problem! Wouldn't mind at all.::falls out of chair in her enthusiasm::)

IC:

Selena was just getting over the disappointment of not getting to see Neraka. She didn't know much about the place, really, except that Bronson had said that she didn't want to go there, which meant that she probably did want to go there, only he didn't think it would be a good idea. People were always coming up with reasons why it wasn't a good idea to go places like abandoned caves and old, empty places like Neraka. But, Selena decided, if there was anything Juniper Whistlewood had taught her with all of her stories of travel and adventure, it was that there was nothing to be scared of except-

Suddenly, Bronson yelled something-Selena couldn't quite hear what-and directed Arrowstar to the North. Selena held on in her startled amazement. What was going on? She hadn't noticed the red dragons coming up on them in all her daydreaming. She opened her eyes wide. She had never seen a red dragon before, much less two together. She wondered if they were playing with Arrowstar and Salmon and, if they were, if the metallics wouldn't mind letting her off first. While seeing this up close might get her a better view, she was likely to be dislodged and, in such, not be able to visit Palanthas as planned.

She was just about to suggest that Bronson ask Arrowstar to lower them down before continuing his game with the other dragons when the wheels and cogs that had been turning in her head finally made some progress. Red dragons were evil. Metallic dragons were good. Good and evil didn't get along... They weren't playing.

The red-from Selena's judgement nearly twice the size of the metallics- continued its malevolent nipping and nudging at Arrowstar. "They're awfully rude," Selena said to herself, "I wonder what they want anyway." Surprisingly, this caught the red's attention.

"Have this silver lizard land, humans," it hissed to them in the common tongue, "or I will show you all a quicker way down."

Though she wasn't particularly fond of the idea of landing (who knew where the reds planned to take them?) Selena decided that being shown a quicker way down might not be a promising factor towards a continued life span. Thus, once again, her plans for visiting Palanthas might have to be postponed. She waited to see what Bronson would do.

MEANWHILE:

Juniper whirled around in the dragon's saddle as soon as she heard it begin to growl, jostling Salmon in his flight. Suddenly, as the reds came into view, Bronson directed the dragons to change their course and Juniper, seated backwards in the saddle (::sighs:: only a kender....lol), had no handhold and would have fallen off if it hadn't been for Rel who seated her-what seemed to Juniper a little firmer than necessary-back in the saddle.(sorry if I kinda took over your character there)

She took a good look at the red. It was about as big as Salmon, perhaps a little bigger. She wondered if, though she had never encountered a red before(or any other color before meeting Bronson, for that matter), they could perhaps drive the dragon away. She took her whippik in her now-healed hand and was just starting to fit an arrow in it when it was taken away from her. She pouted at Rel. It would have worked, she told herself, not knowing that her small kender-size arrows would do nothing but annoy the dragon if they touched it's tough hide. The red smiled in satisfaction as the silver obeyed his command, winging towards the ground. His eyes glinted with evil intent, inbred and unstoppable. Or so he thought.

"Malarterixyr! Didn't I tell you to start picking on people your own size? That silver is way smaller then you!"

Malar glanced around in annoyance, swatting with a scaley claw as if he were shooing a pesky bug. In fact, the faeri had told him that--not that the red was inclined to listen.

Flame orange wings glittered in the sunlight, stretching lazily off the faerichild's back. She reined in her faeri dragon and then aimed another pass at Malar's head. It was obvious--even to her--that he wasn't taking her seriously.

That was his first mistake.

"The smaller are meant to be preyed on," Malar growed, nearly ontop of his next meal.

That was his second mistake.

Anger lit in the faeri's cerulean eyes, and her small mouth clenched, teeth grinding. She was tiny and not the least bit threatening--she could comfortably sit in most people's palms for the love of Pete--but if looks could kill, Malar would have been fried to a crisp right about now.

Steering her violet faeri dragon by almost invisible strings, the faerichild flew rings around the red dragon, hollaring every two seconds with her tiny voice.

Malar grinned and too late realized that he was caught in a web of her magic. And powerful magic it was, as the red fell from the sky...

The faeri leap off her own dragon's back and used her own wings as propulsion. Flying right into the face of Selena, she smiled cheerfully.

"Hi! I'm Silioqui!"

((OOC: In case you were hoping for a fight, I didn't say what exactly happened to the red. He's down for the moment, but the spell can be broken or finished as you see fit. :)))Computer games don't affect kids…if Pacman had affected us as kids, we’d all be running around in darkened rooms munching on magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.

Selena was somewhat relieved when Bronson had Arrowstar heed the red's command. She didn't exactly feel like taking flying lessons today, what with the wind and the dragons and all. The dragons were nearly to the ground when what looked like a giant insect started flying around the red and making noises. Suddenly, the red fell to the ground and Selena thought she might have heard it use a word her Aunt Stopendrop had told her was quite impolite, especially in public.

Anyway, suddenly the giant dragonfly detached itself and flew up to Selena and then she realized it wasn't a dragonfly with venom strong enough to make a dragon drop out of the sky, but a little person with wings!

"Hi! I'm Silioqui!"

Selena's eyes widened, fascinated. "Hi Sili...Silly...ummm....hi! I'm Selena!"
She stuck out her hand in polite greeting, though it was nearly as big as the faerie herself. Bronson's hand was on the hilt of his sword as Arrowstar heeded the red. He was sure they were about to become the latest in culinary delights when the red became distracted, a moment later plummeting to the ground. Then, something fluttered over to Selena and spoke to her. Bronson tensed himself, Faeries were immensely powerful beings, but it looked like Silioqui meant no harm.

The other red, however, had different plans ((remember there were two! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!)). Salmon was being driven not towards the ground, but closer and closer towards Neraka.

"No time to talk!" Bronson said. Completely disregarding his own hesitant feelings towards the faerie moments ago, he grabbed her harshley and shoved her into Selena's hand. Arrowstar lifted off the ground with a jerk, and made haste towards Salmon."Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli, The Fellowship Of The Ring

Silioqui giggled and accepted the outstretched hand by landing on it, her tiny feet tickling the flesh of Selena's palm. The big hand automatically shifted so as not to dump the faeri off and Silioqui took advantage of this to plop down and lean against the thumb.

"Hullo Selena! I am silly, aren't I?" she giggled again, and it sounded as a tiny tinkle of bells. "Who are your friends? What are you doing here? Why was Malar bothering you?"

The faeri turned briefly to glare at the downed red. "He's always picking on people smaller than him." She leaned forward as if to share a secret and said in a barely audible whisper, "I know what it's like to be picked like that."Computer games don't affect kids…if Pacman had affected us as kids, we’d all be running around in darkened rooms munching on magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.

Selena's eyes continued to widen-she had never seen a little person with wings before, though it was said that her Uncle Trapspringer....

"Hullo Selena! I am silly, aren't I?"

Selena opened her mouth to protest, thinking the faerie might have thought she was being rude, but when she laughed, Selena couldn't help but smile.

"Well," she said, her voice a whisper, though she wasn't sure why, "this is Bronson and Rel and Juniper are on Salmon, the other dragon, good dragon, that is. I wonder where they're going without us, anyways. I think that red dragon was 'bothering' us because he doesn't like us here. Though we weren't trying to be *here* exactly, if you know what I mean. Where we're really trying to be is in Palanthas, where they have a giant tower and magick shops."
