(PLEASE read the OOC section and post a character sheet there before you jump in. Thank you.)

This is a Firefly roleplaying thread. I am Ai Xianyi, your captain, and welcome to the good ship Yun Tao, a Firefly-class vessel. We are arms traffickers, running guns to whichever itchy-fingered rebels pay the most for them. The beginning of the RP will probably involve some kind of in-port scene where new crew members are taken on.

Emi lay on the back of a cargo crate kicking her heels on the side, Boredom had sunk in a few hours ago, "Wú liáo," Just to prove she was so. " She sat up and watched as the Docks came to life, lights flickered on and people started to move around, "less wú liáo, food," Sun would be up in an hour, her dad still wouldn't have realised. She climbed down from her perch and walked over, towards the Borstall, a restaurant jut opening up. The streets were being filled with performers staking out their turf, Emi looked at their costumes, "Maybe later," She was always ready to watch old earth tails on stage.

She might look at them for being dress weirdly but for this area so was she, a plain white dress just of the ground with, a blue shirt and cream embroidered coat on top. she slid into the restaurant and sat at a table in the corner, "Can I take your order," a short Asian boy stood next to her, "I'll have Congee, with chá yè dàn and Sake," Handing the boy two credits, "Keep one for you."

Emi finished her meal and strolled back out side, she was struck with an passionate feeling that she had left only once before, "That ship, Kawaii, k ài, cute" She just stood ore.

(OOC: I couldn't help it I had to jump in!)

Kate looked around the crowded port. She shrugged under the weight of her sack filled with various tools and knick knacks. She had just stepped off of her home planet of Beylix and this was the crews first stop. She looked at the colorfully dressed people, the bright electronic signs with Fruity Oaty Bar commercials flashing across them.

She searched the port looking at the junk ships with their cheap Gurtsler engines. She tapped into one of the ports flight directories. She scrolled down the list looking at the dfferent ship types, and crews. There were a few alliance cruisers, some less then desirable looking frigates and then..."No way," She whispered.

A firefly class ship was hiring crew members. She thought they had gone nearly extinct after the Unification War. She pressed her finger to the screen and watched in awe as it zoomed in on the ship rotating it so she could see every portion of it. She scanned the stats. Trace Compression Block Engine, two shuttles, and crew openings. She tucked her long dark brown hair behind her ears and crossed her fingers.

"Please be an opening please be an opening...." She pressed her finger on the crew roster button and watched as the list enlarged itself. Captain: Ai Xianyi, Pilot: None, Cook: None, Mechanic: None. That was all she needed to know. She picked up her hefty bag and started trotting towards the platform it was stationed at.

Since she was a little girl she had always wanted to fiddle with a real working Firefly class engine. She had seen a few on Beylix, and some trashed shells of a few earlier class models but not a full blown 03-K64 model. She rounded the street corner and froze. There it was in all of its shiny glory. Yun Tao, a smuggler's and engineer's dream.

Xianyi sat in the mule parked just outside the Yun Tao's loading dock. He was in a dirty custodian's one-piece with a cap pulled over his eyes, scanning the mass of people as they wove against each other in port. If crew-hopefuls who approached him had no idea he was the captain, perhaps he could get a more true sense of them.

It wasn't as though they'd approach Finn, who was standing rod-straight right in the center of the loading ramp, fists balled and eyes trying to bore a hole through the forehead of any passerby who lingered too long. Xianyi had a fleeting image of that posture dissuading all but the most vicious, but he pushed it aside. Finn's countenance had helped him far more than it had hurt, and he wouldn't give up on that now. It was about the last bastion of stability he had in the 'verse.

He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, and then he noticed a girl coming around the corner. He smiled to himself... she seemed too enamored of this ship he'd picked up to even notice the intensely frightening man standing before it. Perhaps this could work out after all.

Emi took out her pocket station, it spoke aloud "Firefly class; Owner Ai Xianyi, Status looking for crew..., " "

"Stop," looking down, anyone would have thought her crazy, "Apply."

"Emily Sin Keui, Pilot, experience; "Alliance training academy, Arial. Attach training data&

I wish to enter into the position of pilot on you ship."

She walked over to a terminal, put in a credit and got it printed, she walked down to the docks where the ship was docked. It looked like it crashed there, port wing was snapped, landing gear wasn't out, if this was the ship there was a hell of a lot of remodelling to do. There was a man sat on a mover, and the freakiest looking guy she had ever seen stood in the door, "Ok," as she stared at her. She walked towards the guy sat down, he looked the most stable, "Ai Xianyi?"

A girl pushed past her, "No, I saw it first."

Kate extended a firm hand to the man sitting on the mule a wide professional grin on her face.

"Hi I'm, uh I'm..." Kate couldn't get her eyes off of the ship, it was broken a little sure, but that just meant there was more to play with on board. "I'm Kate and this is my happy bag of tools." She kept a grip on the mans hand, continuing to shake it as she observed the ship. She peered inside the open cargo bay, looking past the hulking man and peaking at the simple but somehow homely design of the ship. "It looks like your internal lights are a bit shoddy and your running lights look a slight bit run down too. Oh sorry." She took her hand back and placed it on her head scratching in an embaressed fashion. The girl behind her rolled her eyes but she paid no mind.

"Listen I know I look young but I can tell you sir I am a jing-tsai mechanic. And do I need paperwork because honestly I don't have any papers on me. If you need to see my qualifications just take me aboard and I will do a free maintenance run of this here ship, anything you need I can even point out some problems you're having here, your front plating is a little shot could breach next time you go atmo, and your left engine it looks like it might need a new starter, which could mean something is going on with your Grav Dampener but that is just a hunch." She realized she was rambling and could feel her fingers idely traveling to her tool sack.

The girl behind her was getting agitated. Kate stepped back in embaressment. "So sir what do you think? Shiny?"

The backroom of the Shining Lotus wasn't much more than a piece of plastic sheeting propped up on a stack of crates at one side and a defunct terminal-post at the other, its shadow keeping off most of the growing morning heat. Where it hung down to form a kind of wall, it kept out the dust and the roar of engines from the Eavesdown docks, and, more importantly, made the backroom a little more private than the taverna out front. Inside, a handful of people were seated around a metal packing crate that served as a table, and it was a good indication of the class of the establishment that their weapons were stacked neatly in a rack in one corner.

Rich Starke leaned back in his chair, enfolded in his listeners' expectant silence as his story came to its conclusion.
"That's when the lawman says, 'No, sir. I ain't never seen a man answerin' that description.' Then he turns off the vid." There was appreciative laughter from his companions at the packing-crate table. He swallowed the last of his coffee, grinning. "Now, I'm afraid I have to leave you generous folks for a spell." He stood up as he spoke, donning a battered black fedora and picking up a heavy, burn-marked carbine from the weapon-rack. "You know how it is - things to do, people to see."

He stepped out, into the sweltering street, and consulted the scrap of paper in the pocket of his dusty black trenchcoat. 'Ai Xianyi - Yun Tao - Firefly - landing ground 4,' it read.
It took him ten minutes to find landing ground 4, which was between landing ground 3 and landing ground 5, right where it should have been, and another thirty seconds to spot the Yun Tao. Weird - seems everyone has a hankerin' to fly in one of those Firefly things, even Ai Xianyi. I thought he had a larger ship... From where he stood, it looked just like another small cargo transport, although it did resemble the insect it was named after - resembled it more than he'd expected, anyhow. It crouched in the oil-stained dust as though it were about to leap into the sky... which is kinda what I'm hopin' it'll do, given it's a spaceship and all.

He jammed his hat down onto his head as the wind of a nearby ship's takeoff battered at him, and headed for the Yun Tao. Finn was standing on the landing ramp, doing his intimidating thing; Rich had met Ai and his bodyguard a few times before, and he'd never seen Finn do anything other than his intimidating thing. There was a roughly-dressed crewman sitting on a mule at the bottom of the ramp... except that as Rich approached, he recognised Ai Xianyi. Two young women - little more than girls, really - seemed to be fighting to talk to him. Rich stood back and let them get on with it. He could wait.

Lili weaved her way through the permanent bustle of the landing grounds, trailed by a small boy laden with parcels and packages. She nodded to those that acknowledged her: she dressed comfortably enough to fit in around the docks and markets- a dark burgundy high-collared shirt, today, with loose brown pants and boots- but her bearing usually marked her for what she was to those with any small experience of the Guild.

As she approached the dock she smiled to see the Captain all but besieged. She was amazed that a ship that looked as 'loved' as the Yun Tao could attract any prospective crew.

The girls looked young, so young, all but green.

Might do the Captain some good, start fresh, keep him busy, help him forget..
Her fingers lightly brushed her jaw, the still-there bruise hidden by powder.
Help us all forget
She hadn't been with Xianyi's crew all that long, as these things went, but longer than she'd stayed on most ships. He was a good man, easy to like, and understanding of her obligations. It had been a hard thing that had happened, and cruel, and he was taking it sorely.

She caught his eye briefly as she moved to the ramp, and called across to him.
"Special dinner tonight- hopefully celebratory..?"

She began taking fragrant packages from the boy as they reached where Finn stood, his knees almost shaking in terror at the look he received from the imposing crewman.
"I can manage from here, sheh sheh. Be sure you collect the tip I left".
The boy's nod was more a tremble and he sped away from the firefly.

She smiled to Finn as she walked up the entry ramp, knowing better than to expect it returned, but determined to keep trying. She knew a little of his history from the small amount the Captain had been willing to reveal, but more than that could see those experiences carried in every line of his body.

Finn glared out at the port. He'd never been as good a judge of character as Xianyi, but he'd believed in some of the last crew. He'd even begun to think of them as something approaching friends. He'd let his guard down and it had nearly killed them all. Now every stranger was a potential assassin, and they desperately needed crew. Not knowing who he could trust made him nervous, and being nervous made him angry. He ground his teeth as the two girls rushed up and began squawking at Xianyi, but he hung back.

Liliana floated through the scene like a dream of perfume and silk. Even in her casual disguse, she didn't look like she fit in to the grime and bustle of the port, like she ever could fit in, but she took it, shined it up just by being there, and made it her own. Even the boy carrying her bags looked like he might be a little in love with her. Finn gave him a an extra glare. Liliana's smile had a practiced dazzle, and he turned his eyes back to the captain as quickly as he could.

That was when he saw Kate reach into her bag. The mule was barely two long steps away for someone Finn's size, and he was behind Kate almost instantly, her hand and wrist covered by his own large, scarred hand, bending her arm up against her back in a painful lock. She did not worry him physically. He could throw her across the loading dock if he needed to, but if she had a gun in there, she would have been too close to Xianyi. Finn wasn't going to let that happen again.

He glared down at Emi, daring her try anything as well.

Xianyi tossed off a salute to her as she passed, tacitly agreeing with the sentiment.

For the barest instant, Xianyi sat frozen. Maybe the girl HAD been pulling a weapon. She was cute and unassuming, the way Miya had been cute an unassuming. It was the most dangerous, most perfect cover for a mole, as he had learned.

Then he came to his senses.

"Ssst! Finn, off!" Xianyi shouted, stabbing a finger toward Finn's nose and sweeping it off to the left, indicating that he should move that way. God, as if he were a dog. No matter what kind of hair trigger the kid's temper had, he didn't deserve to be spoken to like that.

Well, there would be time for amends later.

He patted Kate on the shoulder, registering too late that she might not want to be touched again quite so soon. "Forgive him. He's a bit... cautious. We've had some unpleasantness.

"Now then," he added quickly, clasping his hands together in front of him. He'd enticed these girls into harm's way through his help wanted postings, so he might as well be forthcoming. "I'm the ship's captain, Xianyi. You have no papers, you said? No credentials? How about a name, a ship you've been on, or an employer I could look up?" He glanced between Kate and Emily. "It's nothing personal, ladies."

Ladies indeed. He sighed, supposing he should have predicted that cute little ships attracted cute little girls.

He looked past Emily and saw Rich. He had a good head for faces, and he knew he had been across a table from that one before. Not for himself, though... a middleman. Yes, that's what he was. What could he be doing here? A contract on the way before he even had a crew?

"Like I said sir Kate, Kate Lee." She rubbed her sore wrist and equally sore shoulder. If she did come aboard this guy was one thing to stay away from. "I ain't been on any ship ceptin' a transport from Beylix to here. Only employer I've ever had the grace of working for was my father. Tweaked a bit of engines down in the scrap yards, managed to fix one up real pretty once. Even got her to get past atmo. like I was saying sir the only way to show you what I got is well, to show you what I got."

It was a weak argument and these guys looked a might bit jumpy with all the arm locking and what not. "if your big guy is really that fraid' of me he can have my gun. Can pat me down to, but I promise you sir, I won't bring bout' no...unplesantness."

Finn backed off obediently. At Kate's offer, he gave a low grunt of acknowledgement and held out his hand for her weapon, not the type to be concerned with little girls' oppinions of him.

Xianyi ran a thumb over his lips thoughtfully. Disclosing that she even had a weapon was certainly a step in the right direction, though, like his rifle, it might have been a front to obscure the other ones she had concealed on her.

"There now," Xianyi said, as Kate handed her weapon to Finn. "All settled. Well, Kate, I hope you understand that I can't just let an unverified mechanic have full run of my engine room. But you just wait a spell, and once I meet with these other folk, I'll go up with you. I know my way around a ship's guts enough to tell when I'm being sabotaged."

He gave her a wink and gestured broadly toward the cargo bay. "You can have a seat around there if you like; just make sure you stay where I can see you."

He sighed, and rubbed his hands together briskly. "Next?" he asked, encompassing the breadth of the day's developments in his wry smile.

Rich, who had started forward when Finn had grabbed the girl, went back to leaning against a large fuel tower. There seemed to be quite a queue to talk to Xianyi today - as the captain gestured the engineer, Kate, through into the cargo bay, the other girl stepped forward to talk to him. If we're all here for crew positions, that's one big coincidence. The guy Rich had spoken to in the backroom of the Shining Lotus had only told him that Ai was hiring, and wanted someone with contacts - he hadn't said that he seemed to be hiring a whole new crew. Kate looked around the cargo bay running her fingers through the grating, looking over the control panel for the cargo bay door, the hydrolic cables that pulled it shut. It wasn't just the outside that looked like it was in disrepair but the inside looked more than care worn. She however was no interior designer. She looked around at the various crates holding what goodies she could only fathom. She pulled a hair tie from the pocket of her brown denim pants and wrapped her hair into a neat pony tail keeping it from her slightly rounded face.

She could smell food farther in the ship, the delicious scent of fresh herbs caught in the air with the rust of steel. She placed down her hefty bag and sat on it, staying in sight of the gentleman and his bull dog. From in here it was even easier to see the damage that she had only before been able to peer at. The internal lighting definetly needed to be fixed which meant the ships battery probably needed a jump start as well. If the battery went well the computer systems might blip out too which was only a minor problem as long as the Trace Compression Block still worked.

"This is going to be most delightful I think." Kate relaxed against one of the crates and waited for the gentleman's approval.

This was so far the second freakiest crew so far, but the only ship coming in needing a pilot, it could only get better.

"If your looking for a pilot then you'll take me," handing him a thin wad of paper, "But I have terms.

Xianyi took a look at it flipping through it as if her didn't care, "Top 3% of you class, at an alliance flight school," he looking at this she was good but, he already though her a threat, she saw this, he wasn't that good at hiding it.

"If I was gona do something sly on your ship I wouldn't have a record with a alliance school on it, I am honestly not with the feds what ever you got going on, I just want to fly," This crew could be a nightmare.

A man was right behind her, "If you don't want me then I'll find a different ship, but there aren't any other good pilots looking for jobs," Trying to rush him.

Lucas strolled along the ramshackle dockyard, his backpack containing his sole possessions. He had heard of people hiring down here, but two ships on and neither of the captains he'd talked to about work had inspired his trust. He liked to think he was a good judgeof character and knew a good leader when he saw one.

He walked towards a Firefly class vessel that a tout had told him was seeking crew in exchange for a couple of credits. He watched as the captain dealt with what appeared to be a young and very persuasive pilot. Ex-Alliance too it seemed, interesting.

He stood back, watching the captain talk to her, weighing him up before he spoke to him.

"Terms, huh?" Xianyi replied, chuckling good-naturedly as one might to a three year old who'd made the same statement. He unpacked the wad of paper and skimmed the vitals.

"Well," he continued, "I'm not sure what my humble rowboat can offer a little lady with your pedigree, so I guess I'll have to know what those terms are." He raised an eyebrow at the mention of a top tier Alliance flight school. "What brings you out here anyhow, cadet? Shouldn't you be out there fightin' the good fight and doin' the Alliance proud?"

Finn had been looking at Rich on and off for several minutes. He'd seen Ai Xianyi look right at him, watched him watch the Yun Tao, but it wasn't until he extended his greeting to the other man that Finn actually recognized him, despite the distinctive lank and scruff. Finn lacked Xianyi's gift for faces, and he'd had no occaision to remember Rich as someone who might knife them in a dark back planet alley, but the man's easy manner stood out in his mind. Padre. That's who he was. The one who had been a shepherd. That was good luck. They would need crew who knew the business.

He cast a glance down at Emi and Xianyi. Well. He had Kate's gun in his hand. If the girl tried anything funny, he could shoot her just as easily from where Rich was standing as where he was now. He gave the girl one final warning glare and strode off to meet the padre, casting a long shadow in the port dust.

"Padre," he nodded. The man was nearing his height if not his size. "Here for the job?" He gave Lucas a measured glare to let him know he would snap him in two before he so much as blinked if he caused any trouble.

Hair neatly tied back, Lili was humming quietly to herself as she chopped vegetables and herbs. She'd gone a little overboard with the menu, maybe, but they could all certainly use the distraction.

The knife faltered a little as she realised what song it was that she was humming.

Oh Little Pó*..

Her mother had not been happy that she had missed the funeral. Any missed chance to display the success of one of her family was viewed by her as a failure. Lili had chosen not to go into the details of just why she had missed it: displeased as she already was with her daughter's decision to leave society and travel, to then learn that those travels had placed the daughter in danger would have sent Ana Ladon into a fit.

Lili had been thankful that they would be docking, even for a short while, on Persephone. After the mutiny it would be calming to visit the Guildhouse. Her Guild Mother had known that something was wrong, but trusted her judgement enough not to pry.

Her stay there had been too brief: telling instructors of her experiences, sitting in on a number of seminars, placing orders with the seamstresses, walking the contemplation gardens.. The rest had been needed, left her refreshed- and feeling prepared for playing the role of dutiful daughter.

Her reception had been what she'd expected, her ever-grasping mother cataloging the opportunities she'd missed to advance herself and the family, and she'd stayed only as long as propriety demanded.

To return to the Yun Tao, old and worn, imperfect but loved, to Xianyi and Finn... She'd been surprised by how eager she'd been. On leaving she'd thought, perhaps, the memories of what had happened, once away from those who had shared it, would fester, would grow to loom large, would scare her into remaining behind.
It pleased her to discover that this was not so.

Light glinting on the sharp edge of the knife brought her back to her work.

Kate eyed the big man as he looked down at her gun, then back to her then turned to speak with an older looking man standing off to the side. She sniffed again, was that real pig she smelled? She had been living on ship rations for a few weeks now and the ships chef, much like the rest of the boat, had not been top notch.

Her stomach grumbled as it wove around her nose, soaking it's way into her longing taste buds. She tilted her head to see if the big guy still had his back turned. He had her gun, and if she left her bag here then the wouldn't expect much. The coast was seemingly clear, although her vantage point wasn't the best, so she dusted off her maroon button up shirt and began a slow walk towards the smell.

She had never even seen the floor plan for a firefly before but it seemed simple enough to navigate. The steel grated stairs led up into a darkish hallway where the smell was even stronger. She followed the hallway to a small mess room where steam could already be seen from the door way. She stepped through tentatively unsure whether she would startle who ever was at the stove.

Even through the water vapor the woman was absolutley beautiful, her fine feminie features outlined but soft blonde hair. Kate inched forward some more feeling oddly clumsy in the presence of this woman.

"Um.. hi?"

"Hi yourself".
Lili smiled at the girl, gawky and wide eyed, willing herself not to think of Miya.
"Want to help me make mantou? Captain has a sweet tooth and appreciates a dessert."

She guessed the girl was harmless: Finn obviously wasn't too worried about the girl or she never would have gotten past him. It wasn't without the realms of possibility that he'd even frisked her. If the Captain had noticed anything off about her he wouldn't have let her stay around long enough to be able to wander inside, hell maybe it was intentional because he wanted a second opinion.

Besides, she was in a kitchen full of her own knives: what was there to worry about?

Rich returned Finn's cordial nod.
"Good to see y'again, Finn," he greeted him, silently pleased at being recognised. It wasn't that he had any worries about Finn ripping his arm out and beating him over the head with it, or anything of a similar kind - or that was what his brain said. His stomach said a little different as the scarred man towered over him. Rich wasn't used to looking up at people. "Yeah, I heard the Cap'n was hirin'," he continued. "I thought he might have a use for a feller with a few connections. I didn't know he was takin' on a whole new crew." A previously undiscovered self-preservation instinct made him pause, sensing he'd touched on a sensitive issue, so he went on more tentatively, "It, ah... it seems to me your ship had more crew last time I met you."

Kate swallowed the saliva as it pooled in her mouth at the mention of mantou. Oh, she did hope she made it on to this crew. She stayed in place not quite sure what the right thing to do was. She felt rude being silent though. "I can't say I am a particularly talented cook but if you need an extra hand I am more than willing to give you one." She walked nearer to the stove, checking over all the kitchen gadgets. At least this section of the ship seemed well maintained and delightfully decorated as well. She was sure the fine dressed lady in front of her had, had a hand in that.

She noticed she was starring and half laughed nervously. "I'm sorry it's down terrible manners of me not to introduce myself." She extended a weak hand, "Kate." She wasn't sure if hand shaking was the right thing to do in this situation, she felt it was more polite to bow before this one but the gesture had already been made.

Finn's scowl darkened noticibly and he grunted in acknowledgement. His fists clenched without his noticing. What did Rich want to hear from him, that they all gunned each other down up in the black in an orgy of betrayl and stupidity? Maybe Xianyi could spin that in some way that didn't sound like newcomers were signing a contract on their own life, but Finn was not a PR man and it was a sore subject in the first place. Finn was in no mood to fail at exchanging pleasantries about it. He motioned back to the captain with his head. "C'mon."

As he turned to go, he spared a look down at Lucas. "You?" Either the man was on the ship or not. Finn's body language made it clear that if he were not looking for a job, his health would be best served by being somewhere else.

She took an apron from a hook and offered it to Kate.
"I'm afraid I've been overly ambitious so any help would be welcome! I've already made the mantou dough so if you could shape them into balls about this size-", she broke off a small piece of the dough that had been resting in a large metal bowl and quickly molded it "I'd be thankful".

She herself checked the soup on the hob, adding a little more chilli for extra warmth.

"I was lucky to be able to get all these fresh ingredients. Trade's been a little strained on Persephone lately. But I called in a few.. favours. Contacts are one of the perks of the trade".
She laughed lightly, carrying a bowl of cooked rice to the table.

"So, Kate," she divided the bowl in half, setting one portion aside and starting to wrap spoonfuls of the rest in nori, "Whatever makes you want to fly on a Firefly?".

Kate put on the apron, suddenly feeling awkward as she had just walked into the shuttle unannounced and uninvited. She listened intently to the woman speak, she had a beautiful delicate voice that complimented her features perfectly. "Perks of the trade" she had said, she could only guess that she was part of a guild of some sort, which one she didn't know. Quite possibly a cooking guild, the smells from the kitchen certainly vouched for that.

"How many vessels have you flown in?" She didn't wait for an answer her mind was already racing off into the world of machines. "Well I can almost guarentee you that every vessel you've ever flown in has had no better than a Gurtsler engine. They are manufactured for cheap and don't work so good. Firefly's, they got's the engine you want. Trace Compression Block, it's delicate sure, but those babies will keep you in the air longer than most any other piece of metal worthy of calling itself an engine. Not to mention these things are rare, can't find em' much anywhere else than a dump heap these days. It's a shame really they are a magnificent design. Oh gorramit!" Kate yelped out as her hand wandered to close to the hot pan. The pain suddenly made her aware of the fact that she could be talking about something this woman was completly uninterested in.

"Mainly because they are a pleasure to fly in." She left it at that, sucking on her burnt finger. "But how about you, what brings you to a firefly class?"

Mabel hobbled her way through the Eavesdown docks, rocking always to the left to compensate for the weight of her grisly skeletal prosthetic. No one lived to sixty in the Phoenix cartel without a scratch or two, and even if it had taken a hydrolic metal claw to scratch her way this far up the ladder, Mabel considered it a fair trade. She brushed past Lucas without giving him a second thought, making sure Rich and Finn got a good look at her. She was a woman of power, to be feared and respected, and she wanted these unshaven louts to know it.

She shoved Emi to the side with her good hand. "What's he think he's runnin' here, a ship or a kindergarden? You!" she huffed, "janitor! I'm looking for ol' Johnny Love, if you ain't just stealin' his name to add a spit of glamour to this rust bucket." Mabel knew perfectly well Xianyi was right in front of her, just as she knew the corruption of his name would irritate him to no end. She was willing to play a bit of senility to get the extra shots in. She'd heard through her various spies about the mutiny plan against him. She kept good accounts of her rivals whether they knew it or not. The fact that he had limped onto Persephone and bought a tiny boat like this meant he had to have won, but he was vulnerable.

Her withered lips drew away from the ruin of her teeth in a predatory smile. "I got a job for the bastard."

Xianyi's face took on a flash of fury as Emi stumbled to the side. Times like these made him wish he carried a man-sized magnet to rip the skeleton right out of Mabel's flesh and dangle it like a string puppet while she melted into a puddle of piss and venom.

Instead, he swept over to steady the girl upright with his near arm and doffed his janitor cap to Mabel with the other. He squeezed out a genial smile like threading a Firefly through the ass end of a camel. "My lady."

"Well!" she exclaimed, throwing up her metal hand as if she were the least bit surprised. "If it ain't you. Fallen on hard times, I see, sweepin' the floor on a chou ba guai pile of parts like that."

"I help where I am able," he replied, replacing his hat with a good-natured grin. He had been in enough business deals to recognize the hungry look she was giving his new vessel. She was hoping to back him into a corner, get him to agree to some starter gunrunner's fee. And with a potential crew full of children greener than an infected pustule, what leg did he have to stand on to demand any different?

He glanced over her shoulder and saw Finn heading in his direction, Rich right behind. He gave Finn a calming nodd, and then...

Rich. He couldn't be looking for work, could he? This would have been an awfully nice opportunity to start, if he could just get his attention without looking like a ji bai in front of this woman.

"Mainly because they are a pleasure to fly in." She left it at that, sucking on her burnt finger. "But how about you, what brings you to a firefly class?"

"Karma?" She didn't mean it entirely as a joke but smiled anyway.
"And curiosity. I want to travel: a firefly's big enough to get most places, but not so big you can get lost on the inside.

"Now," she turned the heat off on everything and wiped her hands again, "I think it's about time we get you back outside so the Captain doesn't think I've started doing the hiring behind his back".

They walked back up through the common area and into the cargo hold, Kate's interest in the ship noticeable. To Lili she looked like she was itching to start unscrewing panels and poke at wiring.
Lili had never been technically minded and only had a vague idea of how the ship even flew.
She sat on a crate at the top of the walkway, looking over the dock. A collection of people still stood around the Captain, but Finn blocked her view of who he was talking to. Whoever it was, from the look on the Captain's face, it wasn't prospective crew.
Looked like they might have a job already.

Emi wasn't sure if his lack of interest in here meant she had the job or not, she stood still, people were so rude out here, so pushy. She listened as the man talked to the man in charge, well if they had a job they'd need someone to fly this rig. Taking a second look, maybe this would be such a job for a girl that had never work on a firefly that they wouldn't need someone to pilot it, maybe it'll never fly. She look at her PDA Fush Ai Ren was landing in an hour needing a new pilot, a passenger transport.

She weighed it up here or there, until the situation changed, there. She turned to walk away almost unnoticed by the other crew, but she saw something that made her turn back and walk to the ship again, "Do i get this job or do i walk?" The alliance patrol walk right on by, Emi kept looking at the ship as one of them changed his mind and came back, "I'm going to need to see your manifest, I want to clear you out of our investigations," The purple belly waited for an answer.

Within about a second of recognising the wrinkled harridan standing between Xianyi and him, Rich had spotted an opportunity to gain some favour, and maybe his ticket off-world.
"Mabel Wu - jiuyang daming. I'm Rich Starke. I've heard a great deal 'bout you and not one bit of it was exaggerrated - 'specially the part about you bein' uglier 'n a houzi de pigu." Hearing that, she turned to him, her prosthetic arm grinding painfully as her fingers gripped Rich's upper arm like a vice with a grudge. He grinned in spite of that. "Seems I have your attention."

She screwed up her face disdainfully. "I came here for Johnny, not to take sass from some tramp with not the manners or sense he was born with. Dong ma?" Just to add weight to her words, she tightened her grip a little more. Rich winced.

"If you've a notion to take my arm off, you might want to think about poor Finn back there. He's a sensitive boy - sight of any violence might well make him nervous, and when he's nervous he ain't too keen on takin' into account the consequences of anything he might do. Even 'gainst such a well known person as yourself."

There was a moment of tension, then Mabel loosened her grip. She turned away from Rich, but he moved to interpose himself between her and Ai Xianyi.

"Matter of fact, I ain't done talkin'. Now, you're an important woman - Phoenix wouldn't send you here 'less they had a big job to be done. Conversely, you're smart enough to know who to call on for what needs doin' - fact you're here asking for Cap'n Ai means you need an' 'ppreciate his expertise. Now, Xianyi ain't really in much of a mood for bargainin' right now, so maybe you tell me what the deal is, an' I'll ask you a fair price."

Mabel spat in the dirt at her feet. "Johnny's 'expertise' is worth about as much as a Shepherd in a whorehouse," she opined. Rich grinned, half charming, half sardonic.

"Now, if you meant those harsh words, you wouldn't be here. Smart woman like you." For a brief moment, the mingled scents of chilli, cinnamon and sweet mantou wafted through the oven-hot air, and Rich saw Mabel's tongue dart out over her cracked lips. "Whyn't you tell the Cap'n a little more about this deal over dinner?" he suggested. Not waiting for Xianyi's permission, he gestured for the hunched creature to follow him into the Yun Tao.

"Nice to see you've kept the one person on your crew who can do somethin' useful, Johnny," she cackled as she ascended the ramp. "Cookin' an' whorin' are good trades - which one was it got you interested in her?"

Finn towered obediently over Mabel and cracked his knuckles. He was definitely used to this role, and he'd been along for enough negotiations to see Mabel losing ground against Padre. Man was a fast talker. He approved.

"Nice to see you've kept the one person on your crew who can do somethin' useful, Johnny," she cackled as she ascended the ramp. "Cookin' an' whorin' are good trades - which one was it got you interested in her?"

At that, Finn growled. He had been chastized before for hurting clients before they had a chance to pay, but he wanted it absolutely clear to Mabel that he was getting tired of her comments. He looked to Xianyi and Rich as if to say "Please let me hurt her; we can't need a job this baddly."

Lili's smile never faltered. The odious woman's words weren't exactly original.

She bowed slightly to her before facing the Captain.

"Dinner is ready, I'll just set it out". The corners of her mouth twitched in a smile. "I called in a favour so we have fresh peaches for after".

She made as if to leave but paused mid turn to address Mabel, all practiced innocence.
"I could poach one if you think they would be too tough for your teeth, M'am. Just let me know".

She slipped Finn a quick wink as she turned back to head for the galley.

She weighed it up here or there, until the situation changed, there. She turned to walk away almost unnoticed by the other crew, but she saw something that made her turn back and walk to the ship again, "Do i get this job or do i walk?"

"Honey, you're givin' me kind of a hard sell, here," Xianyi said, holding up a finger to delay Mabel so he could address the young pilot. Turned out to be unnecessary, as the Padre jumped right in. God bless him indeed. No way he was going to be able to afford this guy on the crew and keep the ship in repair.

"I'm sure you're very skilled and pedigreed, but you can't just walk up here, insist on terms, and not do me the favor of tellin' me what they are when I ask you. I don't care if you can make my bug dance on water and finish with a pretty little tutu twirl--if y'ain't listenin' to me, you're as useful as a sandbag in the pilot seat."

The alliance patrol walk right on by, Emi kept looking at the ship as one of them changed his mind and came back, "I'm going to need to see your manifest, I want to clear you out of our investigations," The purple belly waited for an answer.

Oh, gan ni niang. Alliance swarming around his ship was exactly what Mabel needed to see when offering them a job. And Emi had given him away as the captain. Perfect.

"Mornin' officer," he offered, pulling his cap back between his hands and offering a half-bow from the shoulders. He puffed up with a small measure of glee as the man's stance deflated at the address--he was no officer, probably never would be. "No crew manifest yet, I'm sorry to say. I'm in port looking for crew, in fact; anyone'll tell ya. Sure as sunrise I'll get that list to your station as soon as I've got one..."

Over the Alliance grunt's shoulder, Xianyi registered Rich leading Mabel onto the ship. An excellent turn of events. He was never going to be able to afford this guy, period.

"Nice to see you've kept the one person on your crew who can do somethin' useful, Johnny," she cackled as she ascended the ramp. "Cookin' an' whorin' are good trades - which one was it got you interested in her?"

"Language, Miss Wu, can't you see I'm engaged with one of the Alliance's fine, young lawkeepers?" He winked at the patrolman, who returned it with a look that was decidedly unamused.

At that, Finn growled. He had been chastized before for hurting clients before they had a chance to pay, but he wanted it absolutely clear to Mabel that he was getting tired of her comments. He looked to Xianyi and Rich as if to say "Please let me hurt her; we can't need a job this baddly."

Xianyi raised an eyebrow at the look and shook his head, grinning with half his face as he turned back to the Alliance patrolman.

Kate listened to the talk down below. Who ever she was she was a mean old crone, reminded her of an aunt back home. Tough bird, and always looking to incenerate you with her eyes or words.

She settled back onto her large white mechanics bag, she had gone unnoticed and for that she was thankful. She listened as Lili took the insult with grace, admiring her level head. Cooking and whoring the hag had said. "Oh," Kate whispered s she observed the elegant woman begin leading the crew into the mess hall. She had read about companions before, had heard a few tales from those passing through her home town but had never encountered one. She chuckled softly to herself, "Well ain't that something."

Her attention was drawn back to the captain and the alliance grunt outside. Now the alliance she was familiar with. She tried to shrink back into the ship, only keeping an ear out to eavesdrop. It sounded like the pilot he was hiring had quite the ego and the lawman wanted little more than a crew listing. The last part was relieving.

"I called in a favor so we have fresh peaches for after." Kate's head spun at that. Fruit had always been a weakness but she remained on her sack. She was not part of the crew and walking in without invite, despite her earlier actions, was not her style. She crossed her legs and waited for the man who had now been revealed as the Captain.

Lucas hovered around behind Emi and the officer-who-wasn't. He didn't want to make a terrible first impression by just barging up to the captain in the middle of what looked like a singularly eventful afternoon. On the other hand, he was getting tired of not being noticed at all, and with the giant crewman all but gone he was feeling much bolder.

"Um, if it's a bad time..." he said, as boldly as he could muster. He wasn't even sure he would be hired next to someone like an aliance-trained pilot.

"I could poach one if you think they would be too tough for your teeth, M'am. Just let me know".

Mabel snapped her mouth shut. That hu li jing....*

"Ni male ge..."* she muttered under her breath, when she became suddenly uncomfortably aware of Finn breathing down the back of her neck (metaphorically. Literally he would have to breathe very far down to the top of her head). "What kind of horse pills you feed this boy, Johnny? He's a gorram monster!" She moved away from him, which put her closer to Rich, deeper into the bowels of the ship. She had the uncomfortable feeling of no longer being on her own home court, but she held her waddling chin high as befitted one of her obvious state. It wasn't her fault these savages were too dumb to appreciate it.

"You talking for Johnny, then, boy?" she asked Rich. She leaned in conspiratorily, and in a more hushed tone, continued. "You noticed he aint got no crew to speak of- just a thug and a whore. You wonder why that is? It ain't cause he's good to his crew, that's for gorramn sure. We both know where the smart money is at this table. You know Phoenix well enough to know we remember them that help us, and it ain't as if you've got a loyalty to these go shui bai chi*."

Mabel shuffled herself imperiously into the head possition at the table. If she was going to suffer fools, she would at least get a good meal from it.

"Think on it," she said to Rich, then to Lili, waving her claw at the table, "this hole would be almost quaint... if it were clean. Are you trying to poison me?"

~~~
Finn shot Xianyi a "not funny, you bastard," look. Mabel, Rich, and Lili all moved deeper into the ship, while Xianyi stayed with the would-be pilot and aliance man. He knew he should stay with Rich, but he had been trying to think of a way to avoid this dinner since the moment he understood it was coming. People inevitably seemed to want to talk at these sorts of things. Normally he could just pat people down, take away their weapons, and disappear while they got to know Xianyi, but with Mabel he could hardly make an excuse to be somewhere else. She had an ugly bark, but the old bitch had a bite too. He had to be there.
Thanks to the old woman, at least, he supposed no one would harbor any expectations that the meal needed to be pleasant. That was something.
He saw Kate sitting cross legged in the bay and gave her an irritated glare. "You're not crew yet. 'm not leaving you unsupervised." He moved to drag her along. If he had to go, so did everyone else. (Scapper, if she comes along willingly he won't drag her. Sorry to pick on you :) )
His long stride put him behind Rich and Mabel just as the old woman finished some hushed conversation. "Think on it," she said to Rich. That did not sit well with Finn.
Kate didn't need to be told twice, there was the smell of deliciousness on the air, and the thought of fresh fruit was enticing. She picked up her hefty bag and looked at the tight jawed man. She was unsure if she should go ahead of him or behind him but figured he would be more comfortable if she walked in front of him. Her stomach contracted as his massive bulk followed behind her. She got the feeling like reaching for anything in her bag or making the slightest move other than walking would be a very bad idea at this point.
"We done here, officer?" Xianyi asked the patrolman. His face rumpled under his turtle-shell helmet, and he hoisted his sonic gun up to his shoulder in a martial stance. Instead of using it, though, he turned smartly on his boot heel and marched away. Xianyi reckoned that turning was about the only smart thing an Alliance grunt could get up to...
Lucas hovered around behind Emi and the officer-who-wasn't. He didn't want to make a terrible first impression by just barging up to the captain in the middle of what looked like a singularly eventful afternoon. On the other hand, he was getting tired of not being noticed at all, and with the giant crewman all but gone he was feeling much bolder.
"Um, if it's a bad time..." he said, as boldly as he could muster. He wasn't even sure he would be hired next to someone like an aliance-trained pilot.
"Hold up a minute, boy, lemme finish dealin' with this one first." His smile was severely forced by this time, after surprises and surprises, not to mention ill-tempered folk and children biting his ankles to get his attention.
He shut his eyes and inhaled. He had the Padre, but who knew for how long. He had Mabel scratching at his door offering employment, and Mabel's projects were never anything out of the ordinary. The engineer seemed to be getting on with Lili, who had not only a knack but extensive training for judging character.
All that was left was the boy, and the ornery pilot. Ornery Alliance pilot...
Emi was growing less fond of this man by the minuet partly because of the alliance she had better talk about this later, "Then what are your terms," not looking at the alliance man, "If this ship is yours, if I can respect you, for the job I will follow any order." She was less relaxed than before she had tensed her shoulders and if it wasn't for the dress and the bag it would look as if she was at salute, "But for that there are a few things I would like to make clear, I get my own room and no questions about why I'm here, can you trust me?"
Well that oh-so-Alliance tendency towards entitlement was not going to get her hired; Xianyi decided that right away. She may not have been one of them anymore, but she was surely of their stock.
He was half a step towards telling her to mosey her pigu on down the docks if it was in such a hurry, but then he considered what she'd said. No questions about why she was there. That meant she was leaving something, something she had no mind to discuss. She was Alliance, but leaving Alliance... could have a grudge, could know something useful.
Worth the risk that she was on the run from them, that she might bring all hell and high water swimming with purple-bellies down on their heads?
"All right, girl," he said at last, stooping a bit so they were level. "We got rooms aplenty and all the silence of space. If y'ain't tellin' me why you're here, I'ma bet you ain't tellin' me if you're runnin' from somebody, but I tell you--what you don't tell me, I can't protect you from.
"And you best cut the makin' orders," he continued. "I'm captain; only orders 'round here are mine. And there's somethin' else." He stood up straight. "You cop attitude with me like you been, Finn's apt to get tetchy. Nobody likes that... used to be least of all me, but I think now it'll be least of all you, dong ma?"
He turned away from her to let that sink in a bit, and clapped the waiting Lucas on the shoulder. "So what do you do, boy?"
"Uhm," he stammered, throwing quick glances over at Emi. "I'm a pilot, sir."
"Good!" he said, with sudden cheer. "That'll keep us all honest, won't it?" He gave Emi a meaningful look. "Now get on the gorram ship, the both of you. All this hagglin's got me hungry."
"Thank you, sir!" Lucas face broke into a huge, relieved grin. This was it! He was going to space! He all but skipped up the ramp next to Emi.
"Alliance pilot school huh? That's right shiny, and at your age, too." He bent down without thinking to pick up a piece of discarded trash in the hold. He'd throw it away when he got the chance. "I remember bein' your age. Isn't it grand when the 'verse is one big black promise?" He looked around the Firefly. It was going to be his ticket out into the mystical void. No more farming, no more crop loaders, no more fertilizer tanks, no more Kadijah. He just hoped he was a good enough pilot to stay onboard... that had been a bit of an exaggeration.
Huh. Oxide corrosion on the door frame. He had a couple of chemicals in his bag that would take that right out, if he had time between his flying shifts.
He waited for Emi to make a response, but didn't stop walking. The captain seemed irritated, and he didn't want to push his luck. He did look over his shoulder at the older man and smile every now and again. Guy seemed like a pretty good leader.
The smell of pork, ginger, green onions, and sauces hit him well before he actually made it to the kitchen. "Wuh de tyen, ah*," he mumbled. It would be hard for anything to be more beautiful than that smell.
The table was small, but there was a kind of homeyness about it. Touches that had been added that showed love and thoughfulness. Chrysanthemum napkins, fengshui in the place settings, the sort of this his wife had always scoffed about in magazines. It was amazing how much difference it made.
"Finn" and the little dark haired mechanic girl were both there. The old woman who had pushed him out of the way was at the head of the table, looking viciously pleased with herself and barking out insults. Every now and again she gave the smallest conspiratorial look to Rich. A beautiful woman floated around the kitchen adding garnishes. The whole thing looked like some sort of dream or adventure novel.
It looked like everyone was here. He gave a modest bow. "Thank you for waiting."
The kitchen was filling up quickly- seemed like the Captain had just about filled the roster.
Lili's hand briefly touched a string of small prayer beads she wore around her left wrist, hoping for peace for their lost friends.
"Think on it," she said to Rich, then to Lili, waving her claw at the table, "this hole would be almost quaint... if it were clean. Are you trying to poison me?"
"Clean, NÚ Shì*?" She peered concernedly into Mabel's eyes, then lowered her voice. "I can recommend a very good eye doctor- he specialises in cataracts".
"Please", she straightened and raised her voice to include all present, indicating the bowls and plates burdening the table, "eat well".
She filled a plate with the foods she knew to be Xianyi's favourites and placed it in front of the empty place at the end of the table- opposite to Mabel- covering it with a cloth in case he got delayed.
She sat near Finn; he looked uncomfortable, and she could only imagine how on edge it was making him to have all of these strangers on board given what had happened. Hopefully she could deflect any well-meaning conversation anyone aimed at him and save him further stress.
Reaching with chopsticks for a green onion pancake for herself she gently nudged a plate of braised pork pieces closer to the big man.
"It is such a simple pleasure, to watch people enjoy what you have prepared. Indulge me, please."
"It is such a simple pleasure, to watch people enjoy what you have prepared. Indulge me, please."
Finn tensed and stared blankly ahead, mind trying to work around the fact that she had just asked him cordially to give her simple pleasure. He took a quick survey of the people around to make sure no one was watching too closely. Rooster used to give him hell about the way Lili treated him well beyond the point of reason. But Rooster had been something like a friend, and he could do that. Finn wasn't ready to put up with that from any of the new crew, and he did not want to open Lili up to any more of Mabel's taunts, no matter how well she handled them.
When he was relatively sure no one was looking, Finn took the plate with a self-conscious grunt and shoved a slab of pork into his mouth. "Xie," he mumbled around the meat, in a carnivorous nod to politeness.
Kate sat back in her seat, trying to remain out of sight from the old crone at the head of the table and as far out of Finn's glare as possible. This was shaping up to be one tense sort of a crew if the old one was in fact going to join. She ate silently watching the people interact with each other. Lili floated around the room serving plates of food, placing a cloth over a steaming plate, aparently for he captain. The old one flashed less than toothy and less than reassuring grins at a straight backed man, and Finn did he just show a bit of uncomfortablness? The companion had handed him a somewhat suggestive comment and it seemed to make him... embaressed.
Her eyes darted back to her plate; she didn't want them to stray to one area for too long. The cooking was heavenly and she let herself get lost in that.
"My reasons for being here are mine," this guy was compulsive she could tell be the way he acted, he didn't think first. She walked in after him into the infirmary, then the stairs to the kitchen, this thing wouldn't hold together if they went to atmo without some major work, "Welding mask," Emi muttered under her breath as the entered. The smell carried to the out side of the ship unfortunate Emi didn't feel like eating again that morning, she walked over the alcove as sat on a small table, "This better get be far."
She waited for the others to eat and get it over with, she eyed them over, "Well they can't be that bad, they seem to get along with each other," she took her PDA out, "Open last page," she dove back into Sun Tuso's Art of War. At least she had go on even if she was gona have to fight the captain all the way. "Mi hÎo ting yì Sir."
(You would not believe the heart attack I had when I saw this had disappeared from the General Roleplaying forum. That's what I get for not exploring other folders on this site. Ever. I wonder if we should alert others who may not know what's up.)
(Since the OOC thread isn't working, I feel it prudent to tell you that pulling out things and making cryptic comments like "ok let go," which could be construed as communicating with allies to drop some kind of trap or something (that's what I thought first at least), are liable to get you killed very quickly and nastily. Sudden moves make Finn twitchy.)
She filled a plate with the foods she knew to be Xianyi's favourites and placed it in front of the empty place at the end of the table- opposite to Mabel- covering it with a cloth in case he got delayed.
"Well ain't that right shiny!" Xianyi boomed, striding the length of the table before he sat down. The small gesture went further to warming his heart than the heat of the core's star. "You're too kind, Lili. You make this bug a home."
"I guess even a whore wants to play at bein' a wife sometimes," Mabel commented, eating a pork shank she had speared on one of her talons.
"We'll have no unpleasantness at this table," Xianyi replied, smiling even as his tone took a stern and serious resonance that the hag would recognize as dangerous. He sat back in his seat and breathed in. He normally would have preferred to change into real clothes before entertaining like this, but his belly was halfway to gnawing through his skin and going off to hunt for food on its own.
"And now that I think on it," he continued, glancing between Mabel and Rich when he had their attention. "Table's no place for business talk either. We got us a lot of new folk here, and we wouldn't want to bore them with the particulars of your little errand, now would we?"
Mabel smiled like a vulture watching a fat rabbit's death throes. So he hadn't told the children he was into illegal dealings. She could hold that over him, maybe, but not until she had room to threaten openly. And with a new crew, who knew who could be an Alliance mole waiting to break open her operation? It was a risk she couldn't take.
"As you like, Johnny Love," she replied, nibbling daintily on a mostly-meatless bone.
When the three of them were finished eating, Xianyi stood and beckoned Rich and Mabel off to the infirmary. He indicated with a finger sweep and a few well-placed glances that Finn ought to stay and watch the roost for any strange behavior from the new folk while he was out.
He closed the infirmary door behind them. Mabel perched imperiously on the examining table, grinning wolfishly at their middleman. Xianyi found she had been doing that with needling frequency.
"All right," he said, clapping his hands together and rubbing them briskly. "What's the job?"
lesliweird
03/05/2007 11:09 PM
"Satelite," Mabel said, sucking her teeth. "Phoenix picked up a shiny new one that needs a little tinkering before we turn it on. We got a man for that on Hecate, but the Alliance's lookin' over our shoulders something fierce. Soon as you boys agree to my price, I make a distraction, you get the cargo, I put in a fake, and by the time the purplebellies call our bluff it's too late to catch any of the ships I talked to. There's a cover ready, 'course, and if you sign out as leavin' for Bellerophon 'twon't raise no suspicion to the direction. We'd want you off planet by midnight." She laced her withered fingers through the metal of her claw. "S'pose all that leaves is price."
(so, no OOC thread... I guess Mabel will start at about 1/3 of what this job is work and shoot to get it at 2/3. Probably won't go up to full price. RedTim, if you want to work magic, it's all yours. If not, I guess we'll assume you did and take the mission as negotiated and paid)
"I'm thinkin' a fair price..."
"Two hundred," Mabel interrupted him. It was a desultory sum by any standard, barely more than a third of what the job warranted; not even the greenest of the green would have accepted that price for even a routine cargo delivery.
"Shiny," Rich said, calmly. "You got a deal."
There was a moment of pure silence. To his credit, Xianyi managed to keep his horror mostly hidden; Mabel looked stunned for a moment, then a hideous grin and a suspicious frown began vying for control of her wizened features. "O' course," Rich said, just as the suspicion seemed to be winning, "I'm assumin' that sum doesn't include the sundry and highly necessary expenses involved in gettin' this boat off the ground, 'cause if it did, I'd think you were bein' just a little insultin' to mine and the Cap'n's intelligence." He gave a self-deprecating smile. "Now, I know you wouldn't do that, so I'm thinkin' we just need to set a figure on those expenses."
Mabel, whose mouth had been working silently for several moments, finally found her voice. "You gorram buyaolian de hundan..."
"Now, that ain't no way for a classy lady such as yourself to be talkin'," Rich admonished, apparently enjoying himself. "Now - we got parts to buy, a mechanic to hire, food and suchlike to purchase to sustain our poor weak flesh..."
"I ain't payin' to fix this ruttin' zhengqi de goushi dui."
"Then seems to me you won't get your job done," Rich reminded her. "Two hundred fifty should just 'bout cover everything, long as we don't run into any trouble findin' the right parts, ain't that so, Cap'n?" Not waiting for Xianyi's response, not really hearing what it was, even, he carried on. "That's bein' generous o' course, and not includin' hirin' expenses, since you weren't to know the Cap'n had a coupla crew members needed replacin'."
"A hundred fifty is all you're gettin'," Mabel snapped. Rich's grin widened. When they start hagglin' over the price, they've as good as made the deal.
"Two hundred twenty." That would just about get them in the air, he reckoned, leaving them with two hundred platinum in profit.
"Two hundred."
Rich paused for a moment, then nodded. "Shiny."
Emi after watching the others eat their meal waited, the captain and two others had left and that big burly guy was guarding the door, this felt like it could be a trap, she checked her bag, "Still there," she muttered. How ever with the captain detained there there shouldn't be a problem looking at the cockpit, see what she would be flying with, had to be older stuff to fit the model, she'd have to fix that.
She strolled past everyone else in the room and walked down the corridor to the bridge, it was bright with the light shinning through, on to the rust coloured panels, "gÔ tài tài gÔ," tutting. She loved flying firefly's in the sim and this one need a pilot, "Best test it out," sitting in the chair she flicked on the screen, "What mode you running girl?"
Emi had completely missed the blood on the back wall of the cockpit and the bullet holes in the chair she was sat it, to absorbed into the computer screen in front of her. She was fully aware that the captain wouldn't like her fixin stuff yet or even looking at it but if she could be flying it she need to know what needed doing. She'd say she was sorry later, but sooner was better than later to leave this place, the ship was already feeling homely.
Emi after watching the others eat their meal waited, the captain and two others had left and that big burly guy was guarding the door, this felt like it could be a trap, she checked her bag, "Still there," she muttered.
Finn shoved his chair back with a grunt that he assumed would pass for an "excuse me" and followed Emi. He was sure Xianyi knew what he was doing bringing her on, but she would have been hard pressed to act any more suspicious than she was doing. She went straight into the cockpit, like a knife into the ship's brain. There she was, sitting amid hastily cleaned blood and bullet holes. Finn had put some of it there himself. Other marks he had been too slow to stop. Well, this time would be different.
She was fully aware that the captain wouldn't like her fixin stuff yet or even looking at it
Finn spun her chair around and, before she could react, took the front of her shirt in one hand and her bag in the other. He lifted her off the ground and put her back against the wall, almost absently applying a suffocating pressure to her rib cage.
"'Mi hÎo ting yì, Sir'?" he repeated. "Who you talkin' to, girl?" He gave her a shake for good measure, like a dog with a toy. Then he turned her bag over and let the contents crash out onto the floor. "No more secrets."
(What's in there anyway? Oh, also, if Emi fights back or pulls a gun, he will slam her unconscious to the best of his copious ability. She's not in much of a position to stop him. But if she's got a weapon and you want to get a shot in before you go down, that's certainly Finn's own fault for not searching her.)
The captain, the straight backed man, and the old crone had left the table and the pit bull was tagging along after the high strung pilot. That left just Lili and a new guy who looked slightly nervous. She began picking up plates, eating bits and pieces of untouched mantou and pork. She filled the sink with two buckets of water, one for washin' and one for rinsin' just like her ma had done back home.
Her vocal cords moved idely, humming out an old nursery rhyme from when she was a babe. She wasn't sure if the companion would mind her doing the dishes but figured it was the least she could do after she had cooked such a splendid meal. her hum broke into the occassional whistle as she scrubbed away.
She looked at the other pilot. It was clear that the girl made him uncomfortable, made him feel inadequate, but he had a feeling what he might lack in skill he could make up for in personality.
She dried her hands on her shirt and walked back to the table to sit. She didn't want to make anyone anymore twitchy than they already were.
"Let me help with that!" Lucas said, springing up, then to Lili, "Please, you relax. It's the least we can do for the meal."
He fell into rhythm with Kate quickly, almost like the two had been line washers their whole life. "So, I'm Lucas," he said at length, extending a soapy hand. "This is my first time off world. I'm shakin'. Y'all?" He looked at Lili and then ammended more modestly. "I mean, you ladies?"
"Then seems to me you won't get your job done," Rich reminded her. Not waiting for Xianyi's response, not really hearing what it was, even, he carried on. "Two hundred twenty." That would just about get them in the air, he reckoned, leaving them with two hundred platinum in profit.
"Two hundred."
Rich paused for a moment, then nodded. "Shiny."
The corner of Xianyi's mouth twitched like it wanted to sneer, but he resisted it. He was used to naming his own price on the merits of his pedigree and his highly respectable network of old-time thieves, but such things had been blotted right out of the sky by all the spilled blood. Really, the discount was worth it if only because the Padre was fronting it--he had been around the black; he had credibility with those who would offer him contracts. He needed people with credibility vouching for him in this time of uncertainty.
"And a half of that goin' to this man's pocket, I'm sure," Xianyi piped in, clapping Rich on the back. Owe you that much just for jumping on board, he thought.
Emi was taken by surprise by this sudden hand at her chest, ~ Was this the trap? ~ she did the first thing that came into her head and smashed her thumb into his arm pit causing him to loosen his grip, Emi slid to the floor. The man lunged his other arm at her she grabbed the top of her dress, Emi pulled away to the sound of tearing cotton and ran slipping on the floor back towards the dinning room fearing for her life.
The Yun Tao's bulkheads screeched under the assault as all ten tons of Finn pounded after her. The abusive noise reverberated down to their half-assed meeting room and shook all four walls like an unpleasant snow globe. To the uninitiated it sounded like chaos come to call, but Xianyi had heard that heavy cadence enough to tell it precisely.
"What in the cho ji bai is that?!" Mabel squawked, gripping the nearest piece of furniture as her metal skeleton rattled against her skin.
"Engine," Xianyi replied automatically, offering her the most genuine smile he had in his arsenal. "New mechanic must have fired it up for a diagnostic. Got a few kinks in it, you see. Why don't I tell her to cut it until you've left, and maybe the Padre here can sell you on a few more little repairs?" He winked and was out the door before she could formulate an obscene enough reply.
He followed the noise of the pursuit back to the galley, charging at full tilt through the dark tunnels of the Firefly's interior. He was winded when he stopped, but he managed to intercept Emi as she crashed into him.
"What in the hell is goin' on here?!" he thundered. "There's important people aboard, gorramnit, and that means not carryin' on like a gorramn nursery school!"
Finn rumbled like a landslide into the galley at that moment, stopping only when he saw that Xianyi had Emi in hand. He still clutched a handful of torn dress.
"I don't know what happened, but I don't have time for it," the captain continued, standing Emi up before he released her. "I don't have time for characters creating problems on my crew. We got a job to do, and we got the funding to do it.
"You and you," he said, pointing to Kate and Lucas in turn. "You're coming with me to the engine room. We're going to figure out what we need and then go get it so we can get off this rock by midnight with our cargo."
"What's the cargo?" Lucas half-yelped, more than shaken by the sudden turn the ship's mood had taken.
"Pumpkins," he replied, without missing a beat, and fired him an irritated look. Lucas shriveled back like a scolded kitten. "Finn, you escort Mabel and the Padre off-ship; have her give you directions and instructions, and take him with you when you go. Take the mule and whatever tools you think might be necessary."
Finn stood stock still, glowering.
"I'll be fine," Xianyi said. At that, Finn stalked off, throwing what fistful of Emi's dress he had onto the floor. "Lili, leave the dishes. Right now I'd like you to get this girl a..." He glanced at Emi and shook his head. "Something to wear, and see she gets off ship safely. Sorry it didn't work out, and best of luck to ya." He didn't bother to rein in his sarcasm as he waved Kate and Lucas along with him.
"Sure hope you can pilot worth a damn, boy," he finished, leading the way to the engine room with frustration echoing through his boots.
Lucas waited until the captain had strode far enough ahead before he turned to Kate with saucer eyes. "Pumpkins?"
"So, I'm Lucas," he said at length, extending a soapy hand. "This is my first time off world. I'm shakin'. Y'all?" He looked at Lili and then ammended more modestly. "I mean, you ladies?"
Kate took his hand and gave him her own awkward smile. "Kate and yep this would be my first official time off world." Kate glanced over her shoulder at Lili who now seemed content to fan herself at the table. It looked like her offer of good will had worked.
As soon as her greeting had been made the entire ship seemed to shake as if they were taking off. "What in the-" The Captain came running from he infirmiry and a frantic Emi from the cockpit. The vibrating stoped as a massive Finn came to a hault behind Emi.
Kate dried the last plate as she watched the transaction between the three. Looked like the Alliance pilot had just lost her job and had put the Captain in a downright nasty mood.
"You and you," he said, pointing to Kate and Lucas in turn. "You're coming with me to the engine room. We're going to figure out what we need and then go get it so we can get off this rock by midnight with our cargo."
Kate needn't hear anymore. She darted for her massive white bag, forgetting that Finn might kill her for being so jumpy, and dug through it for a pencil and paper. She shoved one behind her ear and another between her teeth and jogged after Lucas and the Captain. Finally she would get to see the engine.
She thrust the flowered dish towel over her shoulder as she poked around at the metal skeleton.
"Check this out." Whispered Lucas.
"Oh yea! Wow that thing is shot, but we could rewire it to the G-Line and then..."
"Yep, yep, I see what you're saying. Damn this thing is gonna need at least three or four new parts."
"New compression coil, port side maybe even starboard side too."
"Mmhmm new catalzer too. Whoever had this before they did a gou shi job of keeping it."
"We're going to need a least a gallon or so of oil too, and perhaps a new fan belt?"
Kate jotted down everything on the pad furiously, taking out parts with the towel, showing them to the new pilot and then putting them back in. She scratched her head and wiped her hands on the now stained towel.
"Well Cap'n looks like this is what we'll be needing." She handed over her list and scratched her head. "Could take a little while to put back together but once it is done it should run good as new." She hoped that would put the Captain in a better mood.
Lili nodded to the captain and rose, motioning for the girl to follow her.
Whatever she'd done to get Finn and the Captain so ticked off it would be better for all to get her off the ship quickly.
Pity, really, that she'd wasted such an opportunity: things were rarely dull aboard this Firefly.
Leading the would-be pilot to her berth she found a shirt that looked less likely to swamp the girl than most of her clothes, giving her a moment to throw it on before carrying on toward the cargo bay.
She hit the door control, politely motioning the girl to the ramp. As soon as her feet left the metal Lili closed the doors and headed back to the galley.
Emi felt that could have gone better, being attacked by ape man, accosted by the captain and kicked of the ship, Fush Ai Ren would have got here by now. "Ether way were already full booked, people wanted to leave to the outer worlds ever since, the incident," opening a door for her and following her into an other corridor, " We got a little side job, Alliance wants us to to a bit of fetch and drop, I'll let you know later, bridge on that way Joules will fill you in." "Finn, you escort Mabel and the Padre off-ship; have her give you directions and instructions, and take him with you when you go. Take the mule and whatever tools you think might be necessary."
Finn stood stock still, glowering.
"I'll be fine," Xianyi said.
Finn stocked the mule quickly, and without any care not to use violence. He had no idea what the cargo was, so he took the usual. A dolly, a couple of cords, small welding torch, wrenches, and a gun under the seat for both himself and Padre. He kept his head down, but his eyes on Lili and Emi as the two moved across the cargo bay and the one left the ship, trying to figure out how much trouble he was in. It was always hard to tell with Lili. Xianyi would yell, be straightforward, and tell Finn whenever a line was crossed. Lili... she was demure to the point of total opaqueness. She never seemed ruffled by anything, and unfailingly she was more gracious than Finn had any right to expect. It made him very uneasy.
And now Finn had been caught, shredded dress in hand, chasing after a terrified girl barely a third his size. He was not so dumb he didn't know how that looked. Especially to... well Lil was in a position to have that particular sort of danger on the brain. He slammed one of the storage ports on the mule in frustation.
"I didn't- she- I wasn't going to..." Damn it was hard to articulate around Lili, and it was so often a lost cause for Finn to try to convince anyone there was some violence he hadn't done. He crossed his arms and stood like a mountain, defying her to say he was lying, before it could occur to him that more implied threats were the last thing he needed.
Her eyebrows raised just a fraction, almost in bemusement.
"I know".
She looked at Finn frankly, standing rigid in front of her, so tense he was a fraction away from vibrating: she had rarely maintained eye contact with him for so long, he had always seemed so uncomfortable around her that she hadn't wanted to make it worse, to risk him mis-reading her. But now it was important that he could see she was being sincere.
"I know. It never even occurred to me".
It hadn't. No matter what else he was capable of, no matter how imposing he was, how terrifyingly single-minded when he had a job to do, she had never felt threatened that way by him. She'd had experience of being in that position, too much since she'd left the Guild House, and the eyes always gave it away: Finn didn't have those eyes. Not around her, at least.
If nothing else the fact that Xianyi trusted him to be around others was enough of a guarantee for her. Besides, his devotion to the Captain was absolute: at a time like this, with new crew and a new job, there was little chance of him being distracted like that.
It saddened her that he thought that she would judge him, that she hadn't seen beyond the surface during her time on the crew- but it saddened her even more that he thought there was no other conclusion she could have come to, that he thought so little of himself.
"Go on, see to Mabel. Those kids the captain are with are just kittens," she ignored the fleeting image of Miya, "but I'll check in on him and let you know if there's a problem. The quicker you're done the quicker you can be back".
lesliweird
03/10/2007 9:16 PM
Finn nodded slowly, then more quickly as relief and understanding sunk in. That was... good. Unexpectedly good. And she would keep an eye on Xianyi for him. He took a few steps to her and held out Kate's gun, grip first, just in case. Once she had it he turned to go, stopping only briefly, hesitantly, to add at the door: "I'm.... sorry. About your grandmother." It was his best guess at what was correct to say when someone you knew died of old age. It wasn't something that had come up often.
Once he was up the stairs and moving, things became more familiar. He jostled Mabel out of her chair and lead her and Padre down to the mule, not particularly listening to the drivel coming out of the old woman's mouth except in instances where it seemed like it might concern directions. He let Padre drive and kept an eye on the streets.
Within two blocks Mabel had pulled a comunicator from her coat. "Now," she hissed into it.
On another street, something exploded. Something big.
"That should keep the aliance assholes looking somewhere else," the old woman chortled. "Drive, Preacher. Lets pick up our 'pumpkins'."
Xianyi leaned against a bulkhead in the engine room while Kate and Lucas gushed over the heart and lungs of the junk pile he'd purchased. Once they were fully engaged in back and forth chatter with each other, he barely bothered to listen. No need, really; they would keep each other honest. One couldn't very well attempt sabotage with the other paying attention, and, well, if they were both out to get him, they wouldn't be working together on it.
He idly wondered what would happen if two moles met on the same mark. Would they laugh at the gaffe and swap stories, join forces, or battle to the death like gladiators? He wasn't sure, and he had more important things on his mind.
He pulled at his mouth absently. He'd gotten angry earlier. He didn't like to get angry. Not only did it betray a loss of control over whatever situation he was in... it was also just plain unpleasant. But the former concern was the one really nagging at him. He'd barely had this crew an hour, and they were already unseating him. In front of clients, no less. Perhaps he'd made a mistake, coming to Persephone for new blood instead of hitting up old friends for crew they could spare. But then, that was how he'd picked up Rooster.
"Well Cap'n looks like this is what we'll be needing." She handed over her list and scratched her head. "Could take a little while to put back together but once it is done it should run good as new." She hoped that would put the Captain in a better mood.
Xianyi blinked out of his reverie and took the list from her. Catalyzer was easy to replace but expensive, coils weren't cheap either and would take longer to install. The money from the job wouldn't cover this and keep the crew fed. He had a war chest, sure... quite an impressive one, even, but he wasn't sure he wanted to blow it on this rig when the next job might cover the whole thing. And time. No war chest in the 'verse could hold that in reserve.
"All right," he said, folding the list into one of the copious pockets on his jumpsuit. "I'll see if I can find a catalyzer on the docks, and I'll get ya a new fan belt too, but see what you can do with the coils we got while I'm gone. Soldering iron's in the case there if you need it." He pointed toward a tool box that looked like it survived the trip from Earth-that-was. "Eyes on the clock, too; we gotta be off-world at midnight and whatever ship we got by then is the ship we're takin', so make sure you do the important stuff first."
He stepped toward the door, turning back only long enough to say: "And don't neither one of ya leave the other one alone till I get back, dong ma?"
He strode onto the grate just in time to see Liliana floating toward him as if she were perpetually backlit by a candle and a gentle fan. He bowed at the shoulder, but the look he gave her was grave. "No problems, then?"
"I'm.... sorry. About your grandmother." It was his best guess at what was correct to say when someone you knew died of old age. It wasn't something that had come up often.
She'd still been holding the gun in both of her hands, cradled and with mild distaste, when he had turned.
"Thank you."
She left it at that
For Finn to have taken the initiative in something like that had left her momentarily unable to think of anything more to say.
Her Grandmother had been frail in her last few years, in body if not mind, and Lili knew that the woman had found it frustrating: she was intelligent and well-travelled, and used to being active for most of her life. Her wit had been acerbic, and it was memories of her tales that had prompted Lili's desire to see more of the 'verse.
She watched him head up the stair, saying a silent prayer that all would go well.
Having nowhere to put the gun she carried it in her left hand and headed back towards the bowels of the ship, debating internally whether to finish the dishes before or after checking in with the Guild to see if anything had been scheduled. She'd informed them of her personal situation and knew there would be nothing pressing for a while, at least, but liked to be prepared.
Both matters, however, could wait until she'd fulfilled her unspoken promise to Finn and checked in on the Captain.
She'd barely had the thought when he appeared, saving her the brief walk.
"No problems, then?"
She shoulders lifted in a minimal shrug.
"Our would-be pilot left with no further fuss. And Finn, well.." a small half smile formed on her lips, "no twitchier than normal. Hopefully they won't be gone too long. Anything you need done while we're waiting?".
(OOC: Just checking in. I'm not really sure what to do so assume I am tweaking coils and replacing ship plating so we don't get incinerated when we hit atmo.)
(You should feel free to go into as much detail as you like. You can even create exciting new problems to deal with, or lay the groundwork for suddenly going dead in space at an inpportune moment. Or discover a kitten that stowed away in the gears. Or really, anything you want.)
(Oh! I totally vote kitten! I'm home, by the way. Missed y'all)
Mabel hopped off the mule and led them, shuffling quickly, to her warehouse. Two of her men were waiting and she opened the lid of a nondescript looking crate, no bigger than Finn's arm span, with her metal claw. Inside were small, greenish, decorative pumpkins.
"For the ZhMngqikjié*. For my cousin. Need to be moved fast, before they go bad." She handed Padre a manifest, adding almost preemptively. "If you're going to be a chou wang ba dan*, yes, you can eat them once you're done. They're not good."
Finn got down from the mule and proceeded to load the back, while Mabel snapped her claw and another pumpkin filled crate was put in its place.
"I'll have another of the idiots I talked to come pick that up tomorrow. That should keep the purple bellies off you."
Finn's head shot up, an almost animal like gleam in his eyes. He stalked outside the warehouse, fast and quieter than his size ought to allow, pistol in hand. There was a muffled yell and a quiet, wet crack. Mabel shuffled out behind and let out a profound stream of obscenities. The man with shards of neck bone protruding though his collapsed throat wore an alliance uniform under his thick, dirty duster, an apparent attempt at under cover.
"You giant stupid sonofabitch!" Mabel hissed. "They had no gorramn reason to raid us yet."
Finn grunted and pulled up the man's right sleeve. Chinese characters traced out a snatch of an old poem from earth that was: "Though winged serpents ride high on the mist; they turn to dust and ashes at the last"*. The man was from the Cao. The same as Miya.
"Who's really watching you?" Finn asked. Mabel shut her mouth. "Can you get rid of it?"
The old woman nodded. "Get out of here with the box."
Finn saddled up in the mule, keeping his pistol in his hand. When they were far enough away from Mabel, he turned to Padre. The man was still there, and that by itself was a relatively good sign. He turned his face out toward the crowd, trying to act as natural as was possible. He was no good at it. He was on edge. Xianyi neeeded to know about this.
"Cao planted a mole," he said, in answer to Padre's question from much earlier. "'Caused a mutiny. That's why we needed new crew." He didn't know why he said it. Xianyi trusted the man, but it wasn't necessary information, and Finn couldn't afford to let the man run now. He watched him closely, knowing he might have to take immediate action depending on his response to the information.
(Assuming padre doesn't flip out, all Finn really has to do before we take off is talk to Xianyi, which can go on onscreen or off at Narcissus' leisure. Already talked to Lili. Does anyone have anything they need or want to get done?)
(OOC: lol you want a kitten? alright lets see if I can't get myself an engine room kitty. Maybe I will teach it to fetch a wrench or two. :-)
Kate began rewiring the engine, cleaning out pipes with the dish towel and her shirt and replacin hydrolic lines. She shuffled around in her heavy bag and pulled out a small can of oil greasing long dried parts.
"I wonder what would cause somebody to abandon such a pretty boat huh?" She was whispering to herself but Lucas responded anyway, always the conversationalist.
"Maybe they died. Maybe they ran out of money and this was all they had left to sell."
"Still seems like such a shame to sell an article like this. These vessels don't get none of the respect they deserve." She retied her hair and ran her arm across her nose. The dust was not doing much for her allergies. "So the Cap'n says we can't get no new coils huh? Well let's see what we can do about this." She mumbled. "Well I don't know how he plans to run without life support but we'll see how this goes." She looked over to Lucas and smiled. "Ready to see if we suffocate after hitting atmo?"
There was an audible gulp. Kate furrowed her brows at the engine and began once more to reroute the systems, trying to run everything on secondary lines, trying to make this reconnect where they weren't designed to go.
"Hand me my screw driver I think there is something blocking the cooling system." Lucas handed her a phillips head. Kate poked it into the small vent and twisted a bit. She recieved a heart attack, a bleeding finger and a fuzzy ball of fuzz hissing at the now fallen screw driver for her efforts.
"Wei!" Lucas yelped.
"You stupid...!" She was about to cuss at the animated dust bunny before she caught herself in mid sentence. "Hey he's kind of cute."
"What the hell are you talking about! Cute?!" Kate squinted at the cowering pilot.
"You can't be serious? It's a cat Lucas, nay, it's a kitten. It can barely eat mice let alone you." He didn't seem to care.
"I'm going to just step outside a moment, just right out there." The boy slinked his way across the engine room and stood outside of the door keeping a close eye on the four legged dust ball. Kate picked the kitten up and dusted it off with her towel. It was small probably no more than a few weeks old. Runty looking even for a kitten. Probably left by its mother. It was a calico by the look of it but the young fur and engine grease made it hard to tell.
"You know I have never been a cat person, but your kind of cute. Except, hey buddy you know you're missing an eye? Poor thing, you get the short end of the stick, get stuck in an engine and you lose your eye? Well you're good now. I'm sure the Cap'n won't mind a space kitty. You need a name."
"I can't believe you are talking to that thing."
"It's a cat Lucas, not a Reaver." He rolled his eyes.
"Keep it out of my cockpit."
"Fine, Twister will stay out of your cockpit. Yeah that's your name, Twister." Kate put the ball of fluff into her opened bag and poured it some water in a small tin cup. That made two three new companions on this boat, and all good things came in threes.
"Cao's after you, huh?" Rich spoke slowly, digesting this new information. "Xianyi must be either a sight stupider or a sight braver'n I thought." He licked his lips thoughfully, manoeuvring the mule between the knots of people that thronged the dusty street. The odours of sweat and fuel mingled with the spicy scent of roast meat drifting from a roadside stall. A squad of Alliance troopers trduged past, cutting through the crowd in their bruise-coloured uniforms. "Then again, don't take much to make enemies - not in a place like this." When Finn didn't say anything else, Rich added, "Cap'n sounds like a fine man to work for - he lookin' to hire a face-man? A negotiator? 'Cause right now, I'm gettin' a powerful urge to get me off this world and out into the black."
(OOC - the mule is a "mule" like the one Serenity has, right? Not an actual mule... Finn's saddling it up has me kinda confusified, if you'll pardon the Firefly-speak :) )
Emi watched Joules as he flicked switches, he had a kindly cheery face and kept looking over at her as she watched him from the co-pilot seat, "I'm gona let you take her out, but watch the port engine, Jeb ain't fixed it good yet might come loose."
She liked this crew, less shocking than the first and by the looks a lot safer. She took her hands out of her overalls and put them on the stick, turned on the nav sat and looked ahead. "Good to go," came from the radio, "Locking her up, take us out of the world," sounding like it came from the man from before.
Emi touched to control light and pulled back turning the thrusters down, a light dust bowl blew out from under the ship as she pulled a textbook exit from atmo. Joules grinned at her, "Your are pretty natural at this, Derk got a job for us so we wont be leaving just yet, just hang," Taking control back and taking the ship and flying it toward a satellite, "just hang here," locking the controls and leaving the bridge.
