Would anyone be interested in a post apocalyptic RP?...

Background:

A massive nuclear war has wiped out nearly all of civilization, all towns and cities lay in ruins. The RP will be set in the future, but the nuclear devastation would have taken place as of today. Therefore today's technology would be in existence, but there will be nothing futuristic as technology would not have advanced any further than it is today. Note; things like working guns and cars would be around, but they would be considered highly valuable possessions, and ammunition and fuel would be extremely scarce. General life will be a constant struggle for food and such, in a world where only the strongest or, most cunning will survive.

Setting:

A group of about a hundred people have survived the 'apocalypse' by remaining safely within the sanctuary of a highly advanced underground bunker. The inhabitants would have originally consisted of primarily VIP's and the military. These inhabitants have remained safely sealed within the bunker for 30 years, so the younger generation would know nothing of the outside world other than what they have been taught by the 'elders'.

Plot:

The inhabitants within the bunker have a life threatening problem in that their water filter is running on its last legs. The advanced pumping system which provides water to the facility is still working, but without proper purification the water will eventually become lethal.

The 'committee' have asked for volunteers to form a small team who will venture out of the bunker for the very first time. The team will be responsible for finding a safe site with a supply of fresh water for the relocation of the inhabitants, or alternatively a replacement water filter.

As a 'volunteer' you will be venturing into the unknown, with the fate of your fellow inhabitants in your hands...

Sounds good man, figured I'd drop you a line in here as well. You know Im up for it, and hopefully there will be several others as well...

Good stuff Tamachi. Let's hope we can get a few more interested parties then we can get this show on the road... If you have any extra ideas or things that you think could be improved on or changed, now's the time to speak up. :)

I like the idea and am up for it. I'm especially keen on the characters seeing the ruins of society.

Just a clarification: Our characters would come from the people that lived in this bunker, but there were other survivors as well, that have been living on the outside, right? When you mention fuel and ammunition being valuable, I imagine those were the people you were talking about.

It's good to have you with us Unbeliever! :)

Sorry, yeah that's right. Yeah, I was also thinking that many of the other survivors would probably be suffering from mutations or deformities due to the radiation. Who knows, there could even be other bunkers around too?...

Since I just knocked this idea up fairly quickly, before we go any further I just wanted to check that you guys are happy with the time scale of things? Do you think the idea of us being sealed up in a bunker for 30 years is about right? It's just a matter of creating the right balance between us coming out too early and finding a deadly radioactive environment, or staying sealed up for so long that it becomes unrealistic. Saying that, I don't really want it to be much less than 15 years because I really like the idea of our characters knowing very little of the outside world. What do you guys think? It's just that we need to decide before we can create our characters...

Any other queries are welcome?

Well now, after a nuclear holocaust, i'd say that 30 years is a tad on the short side. Personally i'd go for a longer duration then that, making the group not a 'first' generation, but several generations further down the line. (around 100 years)

I'll give you a simple reason, since 30 years after a nuclear holocaust even exiting the bunker would already be lethal. ;)

Flark

Thanks Caelin, I guess you're right. The more I think about increasing the time line, the more I like it. It gives the mutant survivors more time to build strange settlements and such, and increases the chance of the possible existance of simple, but strange new technologies. Also, the thought that none of the living bunker inhabitants would have ever stepped foot outside is quite appealing.

What think ye all?

Unbeliever
01/26/2006 2:26 PM

I would agree with that. 30 years would be perfect for bringing up a generation that didn't know about the outside world, but as you say, the longer timeline gives the rest of the world more time to change. And, of course, that whole thing about dying that Caelin brought up. Hehe.

Along with that, we can even come up with some traditions that had developed within the bunker in that time, which I think would make the whole thing just that much more interesting.

Tamachi
01/26/2006 4:52 PM

Yeah, I personally like the 100 year thing, mainly just because the outside world would be much of a suprise to them, and even if the 'elders' had written documents the top world would still haved changed greatly, even without the fallout. Also like Unbeliever said, it gives it more time for the in-bunker details possibly, I dunno..

I'm a go for the 100 year 'vacation' should we say, lol...

Flark
01/27/2006 7:38 AM

I'm a go for the 100 year 'vacation' should we say, lol...

Right, so that's decided then. Now before we start I think it would be best if we had at least a rough outline of each others characters. Obviously the bunker inhabitants would be a close-knit community, and our characters we most likely know each other well. This way we can get straight into things from the first post. I'll likely begin the RP with a sort of town meeting in which people are asked to volunteer for the surface team, if that sounds ok?

The usual details for your characters will surffice, something like;

Name:
Age:
Height:
Weight:
Physical Description:
Personality:
Background info:
Special Skills/Talents:

Caelin
01/27/2006 10:11 AM

Maybe add in the 'profession' the person has within the bunker, which mostly links directly to his skills?

Remember however that we are talking about 5 generations here, for the duration of time they have spent inside the bunker, so the community is most likely closely knit.

Thanks Caelin, I've done that. You have proven to be quite useful. :)

Okay guys, I liked this idea and it got a little interest, so I'm going to try to kick-start it back into action by posting the first character...

Name: James Digriz (Jim)
Age: 32
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 170 lbs

Physical Description: << Normal, to slightly muscular build. He has green eyes, brown hair and a moustache.

Profession: Security Officer (Lieutenant). - Head Security Officer within the bunker and works direcly below the Chief of Security, who's work is primarily administrative. Therefore he is responsible for all of the 'hands-on' aspects of security within the bunker, and for the man-management of all of the Security Force. Security within the bunker includes the guarding of vital facilites such as the water proccessing and hydro-electricity stations, as well as other important areas such as the science laboratry, armour, stores and the elevator access shaft. The Security Force are also responsible for the policing of all of the bunker's inhabitants.

Personality: Most people consider Jim to be a decent, honest and hardworking guy. Although it is very rare that any troublesome security issues arrise, he continues to take his work seriously to ensure that things stay that way. He is generally a down-to-earth, approachable guy, but it's said that he has a mean streak and can lose his temper if crossed or pushed too far.

Background info: Jim has a wife, and young daughter who has recently become quite sick. Sickness within the young and elderly has become quite common recently. It is suspected that this is probably because of the poor water quaility within the bunker, due to the deteriorating water filter system.

Special Skills/Talents: Since weapons and ammunition are not in endless supply, being a member of the Security Force means that Jim is one of the few bunker inhabitants with firearms experience. His favourite weapon of choice is a semi-automatic pistol, with which he is particularly skillful. He is experienced in man-management, and has been fully trained in small team tactics and FIBUA, (fighting in built-up areas).

Inventory:

[url:http://world.guns.ru/assault/as17-e.htm]Colt M4A1 Carbine - (with removable AN-PVS4 night vision scope and strap)
5.56mm 30 round M4A1 Magazines x 7

[url:http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/m9.htm]Beretta M9 9mm Semi-Automatic Pistol (with belt holster)
9mm 15 round Beretta magazines x 7

Military NBC suit (Night Camo)
Military webbing and backpack
S10 Respirator with hood and spare cannisters
Short range radio intercom system
Flashlight with spare batteries
Water flask
Personal water filter
Military rations pack (7 days)
Boot knife
Black scully hat

(Note: the inventory is a rough idea of the equipment we'll be taking on the surface mission and may be modified before we leave).

Tamachi
02/03/2006 2:39 PM

Well I guess I'll just come in second then, so here he is...

Name: Henry
Age: 26
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 159

Physical Description: He has blue eyes, and normal light brown hair, trimmed above his eyebrows but allowed to grow out a bit past his ears and neck, just enough for a slight curl. His face has not been shaved in a while, leaving his five o'clock shadow a bit more than a shadow...

Profession: Inventor/Historian - He is one of the very few people to actually spend time doing experiments and inventing things that don't pertain immediately to a task of crisis at hand, leaving most to label him as a loner. It's easily told why, of course, as he spends most of his time in his lab. Late nights and longs days have given him the lead role in mathematical and scientific equations, most not caring enough to delve as deeply as him. He is also somewhat of a historian as well, reading into the history of the Earth as we know it greatly...

Personality: He's a typical nerd in most respects, though not entirely. He is shy, and not normally the person to speak up unless he has to, but strangely enough he isn't all that unhandsome. Though his shy outlook lead most to believe he wishes to be a loner, in truth he really wants to be accepted as everyone else and even more to have someone to call his wife...

Background info: His background has been a rather uneventful one, save few his few inventions. Most of the free time he has or has had goes into studying or experimenting, and even more is spent tinkering with his PDA. In fact, it's a popular theory that if it wasn't for Jim that PDA would be his best friend...

Special Skills/Talents: Most of his skills and talents lie solely in his brain, as he is in most respects able to fix just about anything that runs on electricity or is a type of machinery. As well, he's also able to cite much of the history that he's read over the years, though it's limited in its coverage...

Inventory: Head Gear - An optical device worn around his head, complete with at a 10x zoom capability as well as a Heat and Night Vision setting...

PDA - This is an enhanced version of the PDA's we know today. It is programmed with basic tools, but also has many more things as well. The history books Henry is fluent in are stored here, and as well a Geiger Counter to measure radiation. It is able to take samples and also has the ability to take and analyze photos. It's voice activated, and is always close at hand...

Military NBC suit (Night Camo)
Military webbing and backpack

Back Pack -
Spare batteries for his PDA
S10 Respirator with hood and spare canisters
Flashlight with spare batteries
Water flask
Personal water filter
Military rations pack (7 days)

And do either of you have any good ideas for a thread title?...

Caelin

*edit*

As a suggestion for a working title:

Here indeed and finally finished with my character. Actually wound up with two completely different ideas and had to choose which I liked the most.

Name: Jonas Riedling
Age: 53
Height: 5' 10"
Weight: 152 lbs

Physical Description: Normal build, though well-toned for his age. White hair that is a bit shaggy, though not long, and most often disheveled. Brown eyes.

Profession: Jonas has served as the bunker's chief engineer for nine years, putting him in charge of making certain vital machinery, such as water and air filtration, is operational. He reports directly to bunker
leadership, occasionally appearing before a counsel to report on the state of such machines. If there are any potential problems, he has to gain permission to fix them, something he bristles at.

Personality: Jonas is most known for his gruff nature. He's quick to dismiss people and ideas that he doesn't agree with. He despises small talk, dubbing it pointless and a waste of time. To those that know him, though, he's a kindhearted man that would give up anything if he thought it would help someone he cared about.

Background info: Jonas is the father of two sons (Michael and Gabriel), now grown. His wife, Adaliah, died six years before and his demeanor has hardened considerably since.

Special Skills/Talents: Able to repair and maintain complex machinery, though he's never had a knack for building things. Was once trained to be on the Security force as a youth, but hasn't been in practice for years.

Inventory:

Basic engineer's jumpsuit (dark blue)

Basic backpack (black)
S10 Respirator with hood and spare canisters
Compact toolset
Heavy gloves
Flashlight with spare batteries
Water flask
Personal water filter
Military rations pack (7 days)

I like the idea of the new calendar, not bad. It's certainly better than any title I've been able to think of.

I'm tempted to create one myself.... hmmmm, what to do? ;)

Go for it Caelin, I'd love to have you onboard. If you decide to pull out later we can always kill you off... ;)

Here indeed and finally finished with my character.

Another great character, Unbeliever. We've got a good variety of skills and experience between us.

Just a small point to note about the inventories - I know they're not too important just yet, but I really think we should all be equiped with an NBC (nuclear/biological/chemical) suit and respirator for the surface mission. I also think we should all be armed with at least a pistol - but I could always just suggest this later IC.

Well, you asked for it. ;)

Name: Vittorio (Victor) Running Deer
Age: 34
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 168 lbs

Physical Description: Normal, but reasonably muscular build. He has brown eyes, long black hair.

Profession: Security Instructor/Linguist. - Languages are what Running Deer does as a hobby, Victor speaks 8 languages, though not all fluent. On a day to day basis, he however trains the security force in man to man combat.

Personality: Victor is considered as an asset to the security force, but generally is introvert, unless he is teaching or is passionate about something. A very patient and self composed individual that has climbed up through the ranks to his current status. To most Victor comes across as shy, but those that come to know him are generally appreciative for his calm radiance.

Background info: Victor is married to an asian american woman. Through her father he got into the martial arts, which aided him to obtain his job.

Special Skills/Talents: As a member of the Security Force, Victor is also one of the few bunker inhabitants with firearms experience. His weapons of choice are a short sword and a composite longbow. He is experienced in urban tactics, but likes to do things the 'quiet' way.

Meant to add the respirator. I actually had it at one point, but my computer had a little hiccup, and I must have forgotten to add it the second time around. It's in now.

And, as far as a gun, I was thinking along the same lines as you suggested; that it would come up in the story.

I like the name, too. Turns out, I'm drawing a big blank on one, myself.

That's fine. Like I said, the inventories are not all that important just yet. For now they're just there for ideas and to get a sort of feel for our characters.

Right then, I think we're almost ready to begin. If all goes well, I should have a lot of free time tomorrow, so I'll set about starting the RP thread up. I'll check this here ideas thread beofore I do so, so if anyone has any other suggestions you'd best act quickly.

See you all on the other side...

Heya ^^ This seems like a very good Rp, I would love to join if y'all don't mind. I couldn't help but notice all the guys in the here, it's not fun unless a few girls come along? ( Or maybe I missed someone, sorry if I did, hehe ^^). I've never done an Rp like this, and would be honored if I could join. I'll post my character to help ya deciede. I was also thinking there would be a short of class/ranking in the bunker sense it may happen over time. Possibly the bunker could as be male dominant but with signs of female power, although not as much, still dually felt. However that's just a small suggustion. =)

Name: Liara Sanvu.
Age: 23
Height: 5' 3"
Weight: 110

Physical Description: She is very lean in body type, She appears ohave decent muscle build to her but not overly done. A very timid beauty if you say. Her hair is very long and goes to just below her waist, it's very very precious to her. Her eyes are a soft blue, sometimes changing to a dark blue. She doesn't seem to dress very flattering to her body type. She liks to dress in mostly blue's or black. Mostly wearing tighter fitting tops, and looser pants for more flexibility. However, lately she has been wearing alot of white to show her medical knowledge. ON her back right below her hair base, is the word Flow, Followed by Water. However it's mostly covered up by her hair.

Profession: Medical Squad / Combat Specialist.

Personality: She is very timid, and quiet nature. She also seems to be very innocent and naive to some degree, although sometimes it appears to be just an act. Her family was said to not have been originally ment to be in the bunker, So she isn't really liked by much of the bunkers occupaints. However, everyone knows her, and she will willing help anyone who is sick. She doesn't talk much, and rarely ever takes the first step to intiate anything. She is a very stubborn healer when it comes to trying to help anyone. She is very deeply scared of guns, No one knows why though.

Background info: Her Great Grandfather, and Great Grandmother we're the founders of the first medical squad, and hospital in the bunker. Her father was taught in hand to hand combat, and martial arts, by his father. She was also taught however, shortly after her 16th birthday her father died in a bunker accident. Her mother was one of the more recent ones to die of the spreading sickness. Sadly it seems to effect her timid-ness more. Of her family only her grandmother, and her are still alive. Her, and Grandmama, Are very close. Grandmother also supported her in her goal to help the bunker as much as possible. She has turned her section of the bunker into a small hospital for those who are sick, Trying deperately to find a way to stop the sick-ness from spreading. The hosipital is very full with certian people, however with the aid of her little room it seems to help some. HEr mother taught her how to dance, and as she got older she began to mix that with her martial arts her father taught her. When she walks it appears as if she is gliding of shorts, but it's only when she is in a good. However lately she has not been very happy. She also seems to have reoccuring nightmares, which seem to show what is happening next. It scare's her very deeply, but seems to get worse when she leaves the bunker...

Special Skills/Talents: She is very good at sleath, and close combat. However, she rarely fights. She has 2 daggers which she is very skilled at useing. She is also a very fast runner. She is very good and dancing, and singing however, she doesn't like to do either around people.

Inventory :
2 Pairs of black Cargo pants.
2 Daggers.
A tight fitting blue turtle neck, and a blue vest.
She has a pendant which was given to her by her mother. It never leaves her neck.
She has a pack filled with medical supplies.
She has some knowledge in herbal remedies also.
Her grandmother gave her a book which lists herb's, and there appreance but she doesn't think it will be much use.
1 Jacket.
2 bottles of water.
Some food, however very little.

I hope this is a good description, sorry for any spelling errors also.

Hi Lunar. I'm happy for you to join, and agree that it might be interesting to have a girl along. I'm just checking tho, you do know that the story line we're going for is that no one has EVER left the bunker since the Apocalypse? Also, you do realise that the main plot means we will be leaving the bunker quite soon to head off into the wasteland, exploring the unknown. I'm just saying this because I wonder if a character with a medical profession would be more likely to remain behind, caring for the sick? Not that I'm saying you shouldn't have a character with a medical profession, I'm just saying that you'll have to think of a good reason to come along with the team. :)

Looking over your character, she seems fine. The only thing I have noticed is your profession is listed as;

Medical Squad / Combat Specialist.

If your character has a fear of guns, you should really change that to; Unarmed Combat Specialist.

Everyting else is fine. :) Feel free to ask any questons you might have. If everyone's happy, I'll post here to let you all know when I've set up the RP thread.

Lunar_Rising
02/05/2006 3:20 PM

She only has a fear of guns, How ever other weapons she has no fear of. Also since I am sure she is not the only medical specialist, I was gonna have her grandmother kinda force her into it, to try and get her to get over her timid-ness. Also, Her grandmother think's having a medical specialist might help the success rate of the goal. Yes, I know the story line, I read it a few times... I'm a bit confused as to why you think I do not think we would be leaving the bunker. If you mean the book of herbs, I highly doubt nothing was kept from the pass that could be passed down through the generations. I also have a very good reason for her to go along.

I'll agree with Lunar on this one. I don't think it's far-fetched to think that someone with some medical expertise would be sent with the group. Since the fate of everyone in the bunker rests on this particular quest, it would be in their best interest to make sure we have as much chance of our own survival as possible.

And I think everything else seems to be in order to get going. I'm looking forward to this one.

Alright, I believe I managed to change Henry around a bit to make him fit in more. If you'll notice I took his pistol away as I rather liked the idea of him getting one in character before we actually go out. Moving on to other things...

I actually have one last suggestion before we get going, and it kind of ties in with my last statement. I think it would be cool if the ones of us without military/police background did get most of our 'surface' gear in character, as it would be a bit more realistic I believe...

Anyways, I'm glad to see the enthusiasm that is generating for the idea. Sorry I've had kind of a dormant period, it's been a rather long weekend, and a bit strange at that. But hey, I can't wait for this bad boy to get started, so enough in the Idea's Section, let's invade the General Section, eh?

Sorry about that Lunar, it was quite late when I noticed your post and I was just about to log off. I only had chance to read through your character very quickly before I replied, so I was just trying to make sure you were aware of everything. I can't exactly remember what made me think that now, but something did. Anyway, your character is fine now so welcome aboard. :)

I was sort of planning on that. Sorry again if I'm not explaining myself properly, but the inventory at this stage was there as a referance of the equipment we will be taking on the mission. Like a sort of reminder of things we need to collect IC.

Right then, everyone seems keen to get started so I'll scoot off and get the RP thread written up. Since no one has suggested any other thread titles, I'll probably be going for Caelin's choice. I'll post back here once it's done...

Hope you all enjoy. :)
