Me, being the Wasian that I am (half white, half japanese), feel like starting a thread about ninja and the like. I'm not sure exactly what year it was, (someone could come in and help me with this one), but I'd like to set it just before the Meiji restoration (during the revolution). I would prefer that setting, but not the historical accuracy past the technology. Ninja and Samurai; you know the drill.

I'd also prefer a more realistic approach, rather than a "Naruto" style technique system. Realism is always good.

If you want it to be more 'realistic' -- then 'ninja' would just be disgruntled Samurai, or Samurai on a particularly 'sneaky' mission. You'd also have to dispense with the idea of black outfits and so-called 'ninja-to.'

Just a heads up.

You pick on everyone, don't you?

Yes, I was thinking of the "ninja" ninja; the black-outfit toting, shuriken tossing, sneaky bastard ninja. But I don't want any magic.

Bah, you might as well crush my dreams and aspirations while you're at it.

The best time period for this kind of idea would be the Sengoku (or Warring States) era, when ninja clans and rival factions were the most abundant. You're probably thinking about the Black Dragon clan whose job it was to take the head of Tokugawa Ieyasu, but if you don't mind me suggesting, having each character attributed to a clan (several of whom might be rivals) could make for a very interesting result.

Wasn't trying to break your balls.. just saying that realistic 'ninja' portrayal really wouldn't be very fun for most.

If you want the black-clad, shuriken-tossing ninja that's fine.. but it's still more fantasy than reality.

In any event.. first thing I'd suggest would be to nail down the exact nature of 'ninja' in your setting. Is it a school anyone can join. Is it multiple clans with their own schools. Multiple clans that learn from one school.. etc.

Let me put on my boots. ;)

Sounds like a good idea, if I knew anything about this time period. I'd say each player coming from a separate clan might be more complex than I was originally expected. It would be pretty interesting. It's definitely in the idea category.

If you wouldn't mind helping out with the history, then I think this would be the better choice. Otherwise I'll just pull one of the "every player is on the same team" strategies. I would prefer not to.

Yeah, that's what I thought when you were defining the "disgruntled samurai" portrayal of the ninja. Without the pepper-filled staffs or the "magical" dissapearances of the ninja, it would not really be exciting at all.
