Okay as many of you know by know I am a Sci-Fi junkie (hush Shal or I shall be forced to take away your girl scout cookies!). Anyway, I was wanting to begin a Sci-Fi thread, something original and pretty much on the fly and finally something a little 'grittier' than Star Wars or Star Trek.

I was wondering if anyone else was interested in giving it a shot?

I'm not too much of a Sci-Fi fan by itself, but I'm willing to give anything a shot at least once. And hey, if it turns out I don't like it, maybe my character will suddenly be schizophrenic and somehow in someway just HAPPEN to accidentally-on-purpose fall of of a bridge...

So what kind of things did you have in mind, exactly? Anything a little more specific?

This sounds interesting... Would like more details however :)

Aeramae

Screw the details! Arandur, you could make a thread about man-eating underwear from space, and I would join! Translation: Count me in for whatever it is you are cooking up!

Arandur
02/28/2005 5:10 AM

Details?? That is what this thread is for! So we can all have a kind of say about what we are looking for in the thread... And since I posted this idea then I shall make a few suggestions first I guess

Personally I am looking for something 'grittier' as I said, think of the starships in Aliens or Firefly or even the new Battlestar Galactica. I think that kind of gives an idea.

As for a storyline? Well that basic premise is what we are here for! Perhaps something with a definable enemy? Such as the Empire, the Machines (as in Terminator or Matrix or the Cylons of Galactica)... Anyway folks toss out your suggestions/ideas/preferences and we can begin working though the ideas...

Well what about a oppressive goverment that has lost contact with the people and uses robots to keep the populace down, gives us very little ability to god mod.

OooOO Gritty Galactia! I think we're onto a name. :) Ha, what the heck was the name of that dog/robot thing in the 1st series? Moffet? Moppet? What WAS that thing anyway? (NO, I will NOT be that in the RP!!)

It was called Muffet (or Muffy) by Boxy who was Selina's kid in fact, and later the surrogate son of Apollo after her death. It was supposed to be a replacement for his Dagget (dog) which was killed when the cylons blew the crap out of the planet Caprica. Since no Daggets were taken when the refugees fled (or possibly were eaten during the food shortages) they decided to waste valuable resources and time building that thing. At least it wasn't an ewok!

I know I need to get a life... :(

I wonder... is it a bad thing that I have no clue what the heck you're talking about? I never watched Battlestar Galactica or Star Trek. In fact, I LOATHE Star Trek.

Please don't hate me!

Now that you mention it, it did have an ewokian fuzzy look to it. I can't believe you remember all that stuff! Apollo and Starbuck - I remember thinking they were SUCH hotties. Of course, you probably had your eyes glued to Casseopia (sp?), so no smarty pants comments are allowed.

So when we gonna start the Grit?? ;) (nice recovery, eh?)

Nah couldn't stand Cassiopeia the li'l trollop wench, much preffered Athena (Adama's daughter) or Sheba (came in later as a fighter pilot from the Battlestar Pegasus).

Perhaps a story more along the lines of some of the Wing Commander movies? As humanity grows more technolocially advanced we begin to explore outer-space. However, those people who work and live in the deep voids begin to develop a different mentality then those who stayed on the blue world. They begin to think, feel, and act differently, perhaps they even begin to evolve in a different direction? These "spacers" for lack of a better word, believe themselves superior to the planet dwellers, and quickly a sort of war breaks out between them and the planet's children.

Dean give me some sort of reliable IM contact! It's been forever, we should talk!

This is my first post on these forums so forgive me if I am completely out my depth (though that has never stopped me from opening my mouth).

I thought it would be interesting to be part of a task force in a rebellious though slightly technologically backward star system. As such we would be sort of caught in the middle between a benign but misguided dictatorial command and the differing levels of resentment and hatred from the locals. This should give everything from liaisons, spies, assassinations, smuggling, double-crossing and being ordered to do things that range from assuredly morally questionable to downright evil.

Ooh! Ooh! I know! I know! How about man-eating robot-bunny-zombies from space? No? Alright then, I tried.

On a more serious note however... While new to this entire concept of gaming, I'm in. I'll see this through. :)

Sci-Fi thread

Asimov writes a couple of Sci-Fi novels in a futuristic setting, and all of a sudden, everyone thinks Sci-Fi = Futuristic.
Guess what, Star Wars was Fantasy! Just because you put a few lasers and robots in here and there doesn't make it Science-Fiction. The name is self-explanatory! Fiction which includes Science in it, which differentiates to Fantasy, because Fantasy is completely fictional and ruthless. Let me remind you that not all of Verne's Sci-Fi was futuristic.
The genre has been violated!

Aeramae
03/06/2005 7:16 AM

If we go strictly by what you claim is sci-fi, then there technically is no such thing as science fiction. It's all fantasy. At least, if we're all narrow minded like you that is.

The_Bard
03/06/2005 10:14 AM

Well, I'm sorry then. Ignore anything in my previous post ang go on with your Sci-Fi.

Mica
03/07/2005 6:34 AM

As I understand it, sci-fi is any fiction that uses science and technology as the mechanism for explaining effects that cannot be obtained utilising common technology. Fantasy however does not use science to explain the mechanisms and leaves it all completely in the realm of make-believe.

Space ships, blaster rifles etc utilise technology that can be defined within the scope of physics (however dubiously) and therefore are science.

Wands, staffs, magic etc - fantasy.

There is no reason why the two cannot be combined - but rather than getting into the realms of anal retention on a grand scale by giving degrees of application to each and every subcategory, why not stick with explaining things in terms that everyone understands to some degree and let them ask if they want a further breakdown?

So this sci-fi game is designed with a futuristic slant (when seen in relation to the current world technology), we all presumed as much from the opening posts. :)

Yes, I thought they were both much more attractive then the whining and crying Serina...I don't know how Apollo could have put up with it...well I can understand, but she wouldn't be allowed to talk much ;).

And you are just throwing the Jane Seymour thing in because you are a Doctor Quinn Medicene Woman fan... :p

OK firstly what in HG Wells' magic butthole has this got to do with ideas for the thread? What's that I hear?? Fuck all? That's right, so please keep this idiocy away from thread's which I begin. If you wish to debate the nature of Science Fiction take it to the books forum...

And your origin of Science Fiction is flawed here kiddo. Robert Heinlein wrote Science Fiction, HG Wells wrote Science Fiction, hell even HP Lovecraft wrote his own twisted version of Science Fiction (many of the Cthulhu mythos are alien in origin). These are juat a few of the writers who were writing the genre way before Asimov -so don't lay the genre at his feet.

You're definition is in many ways correct...Fiction which contains elements of Science. Space Travel, laser weaponry and galactic expansion are all elements which heavilly draw from Science and are things which Star Wars and Star Trek both contain so are by definition both Sci-Fi. The fact that they do not explain the tedious nature of the technology (as Asimov is want to ramble upon) does not belay the fact they sit firmly in the genre. Star Wars had many fantasy elements, but it is part of the Sci-Fi genre...

But that's all beside the point. This thread is for RP ideas for a SCI-FI RP thread, not a place for you to piss and moan about definitions...

Excellent *drums fingers together while beadily staring over the top*.

As a complete nOOb, I want to play God (just joking, I have just finished reading the rants about nOObs, most amusing).

In all honesty I don't care who I am as long as I am called Ethan Mordred - such a cool name. :) Just give me some indication of what you want (and some help if I need it) and I will give it my best.
