I want to start up a Middle-Earth Rp. Anyone interested???

Shallandra
02/16/2005 3:46 PM

Sure, I'm game! :D

Exile
02/17/2005 9:09 PM

Looks as if it could be only you and I again. :)

Anyone else interested? I am not sure if I want to create it, I have to many of my own threads right now.

Shallandra
02/17/2005 9:17 PM

Well, Caelin expressed an interest in the thread - so maybe we can harass him into starting one. ;) I honestly don't feel comfortable enough to start a thread on my own yet, and though I've seen all the LOTR movies, I wouldn't declare myself an expert on Middle Earth. I'll shoot Caelin (OooOO I've wanted to do that for a long time!) :) Oh sorry, lost my train of thought - I'll shoot Caelin an IM & see if he can put another thread in his schedule.

Unless there's another Lurker out there who wants to take it up? I see you people reading these messages!!! :)

Arandur
02/17/2005 9:39 PM

Sounds good I am also in, but not interested in starting the thread. Didn't Mr.Pit say he ran or moderated a Lord of the Rings board or something also??

Arandur

Shallandra
02/17/2005 9:44 PM

Arandur! When'd you sneak on here?? ;)

Yes, I do believe Mr.Pit is a self-proclaimed expert on Middle Earth. So we'll just tell him he's been nominated, seconded, and voted in to start the thread. :)

Exile
02/17/2005 9:48 PM

*raises hand*

I third it, just in case it needs to be thirded.

Shallandra
02/17/2005 10:05 PM

Oh well - now that it's been thirded, it's a done deal.

See what happens Mr Pitt Caelin while you french people are sleeping???

Exile
02/17/2005 11:06 PM

Silly Frenchies. :P

He did say he had his own board, so.... what's one topic compared to a whole forum? Right? :)

Shallandra
02/17/2005 11:26 PM

In the words of Arthur Fonzerelli "Exactamundo!"

Caelin
02/18/2005 1:57 PM

Ok you guys, should not be much of a problem.

I have an idea of a story similar to that of the hobbit, but taking place before this ever happened. In the hobbit it was mentioned that old man Took had been on an adventure and this is where I based this off.

A group of elves, looking for an ancient relic that was procured by the witch king of angmar, find themselves in the need of a small person, to go through the narrow crawlspace to reach the room where the artefact is said to be held in, so he can open the door for them.

I aim to start the journey in Lorien, travelling to rivendell (to gather a few others) and drop by hobbiton, before treading back in our tracks to rivendell again. From there to the ettenmoors and then north along the mountainridge to reach angmar. Thw witch king is already gone from there by the time this story starts, but of course in a place like that we will have enough other perils, not counting the fact that the route is taking us close to Mount gundabad.

How about it?

I'll need a good number of elves, mayhaps a dunedain and of course someone to play the part of Old man Took. I will take on the role of the leader of the elven group myself.

Shallandra
02/18/2005 2:13 PM

Outstanding!! It's so nice of you, Mr Pit, to be so cooperative with all that we decided you should do. ;)

I'd be one of da elves!

Exile
02/18/2005 2:37 PM

Dunedains....?

How many elves?

Shallandra
02/18/2005 2:54 PM

Dunedains....?

Oh, so I'm not the only one who had no clue what that was?? :)

Flandrake
02/18/2005 3:38 PM

The Dunedain are men who have ancestors from Numenor, the island given to men by the Eldar. They live longer and are usually taller and fairer. They dwell in the north as rangers although there are some in Gondor as well. Aragorn was a Dunedain.

If this thread does get started I'd be interested in playing. I think I'm going to be playing a dunedain in AvA thread though. So I may want to play an elf in this one.

Caelin
02/18/2005 3:39 PM

Dunedains....?

Oh, so I'm not the only one who had no clue what that was?? :)

Dunedain, for the less versed: those like Aragorn, humans decending from the numenoreans, who live longer then any other humans (some up to 300 years).

Exile
02/18/2005 3:41 PM

I would like to play dunedain.

Arandur
02/18/2005 4:18 PM

Hmmm...what to play? So much choice *laughs*

Well since I know nothing of Old Man Took (who presumably at this point ain't that old), and the Dunadain is taken, I will be playing one o' the elves.

Arandur

Shallandra
02/18/2005 5:40 PM

Ohhhh Aragorn was a Dunedain. I never could figure out what the heck they were calling him in the movies! Okee, now I know what they are. (Are they all as much of a hottie as Aragorn was?!?!) *wipes drool from corner of mouth*

Caelin
02/18/2005 5:58 PM

Typical shal post, as usual. ;)

I'll give you some more background. Elrond, who is actually a half-elf, was given a choice by Eru (god) to either live as a human, or as an elf. He chose the latter and thus became one of them.

His brother, Elros, chose to live with the humans, but due to the elven blood within him, a race of humans was thus formed, the numenoreans, with a longer lifespan then that of a normal man. Elros was the first king of these numenoreans. Later, the numenoreans became envious of the lifespan of the elves and also wanted to go to the wasting lands (the safe haven of the elves, also known as amman). When Melkor, one of the valar and who later became sauron, was captured, he corrupted their king into attacking amman. Through this, the line of kings was broken and the numenoreans were almost extinct due to the wrath of the Valar. Aragorn decends straight from that lineage of kings, with the two most well-known of these kings being Elros and isildur.

Shallandra
02/18/2005 6:46 PM

So that's how the line of kings was broken. I don't think they explained that very well in the movies - I couldn't figure out how Aragorn was Isildur's heir, but had been a ranger all that time, and at what point those who guarded Gondor (forgot their names) came into play.

Oh - and I'm glad to see I'm living up to your expectations of a 'typical shal post' ;)

Flandrake
02/18/2005 8:21 PM

I guess I could play as Old Man Took since no one else is taking it. Is his first name Gerontius?

Arandur
02/18/2005 11:57 PM

Well then that's sorted ;)

I will play...Eldenurien of the Sindarin, and will wait to see what the other of my elvish brethren are playing then I will find my niche.

Arandur

Caelin
02/19/2005 3:06 PM

Right, as the party will be formed in Lorien, thus the leader of the group being from there, my character will be Haldir of the Galadhrim. (Same Haldir from LOTR, albeit a bit younger.)

Exile
02/19/2005 8:45 PM

Hmmm.

*scratches head*

Could I get some help?

Shallandra
02/19/2005 8:53 PM

Heh, don't worry Exile - I haven't heard of any of those people or places either. But, being clueless hasn't kept either of us from joining a thread before. ;)

mrmao
02/19/2005 10:50 PM

yeah i'm not the thickest person, i at least know about numenor, althought i though that Sauron was a myar who was lead away by Melkor.

Caelin
02/20/2005 1:10 PM

Exile, a name coms to mind for you, which is: Araglas, who was chieftain of the Dunedain for a period of 128 years, after the fall of the witch king. :)

Shal, do you want your character to be male or female and from rivendell or Lorien?

MrMao:

Melkor is the same thing as Sauron. He was one of the mightiest of the Anatar (Ainur) and the reason why the 14 Valar were formed. Sauron had an equal power to that of Manwe and was considered as Manwe's brother in the eyes of Eru, until he turned to evil. At that point he was no longer considered as an Ainur.

(for those who do not know, the Ainur were the 9 gods closest to Eru/Illuvatar, 8 of them became the Valar, along with 6 other gods that were called to life by Manwe. The Maiar came after the Valar and were considered as a lesser order.)

Do I need to look up some info on him then, or can I just mold him as we go along?

Shallandra

Female, of course. As for where I'm from - whichever one would bug Arandur more. :P
Outside of that very important determining factor - is there much of a difference between the elves of those places?

Arandur

Yes, I am! Whatever my elven name is, will have to be followed up with Sue or Jo.

AFTER DUE THOUGHT...

I find myself more and more hesitant to start up this story. I'll elaborate why:

The general trend I see here is that people post with full enthousiasm for the first 2 pages, then simply do not bother to post anymore. So before I will even to through the trouble to spend a lot of time and creativity to set up a decent storyline, I am going to ask each of you to stick with it for the duration. If that is something you cannot do or are unsure about, I'm going to demand that you will not apply to play in the story.

For those that will commit to playing this out, I can promise enough adventure along the road and interesting encounters, as well as a few unexpected twists and turns within the story, with room for character development.

I maintain a high quality in my storylines and expect the same in return for the character postings. Those that cannot follow this expectation need not even apply. Myself, I have a pet peeve concerning the correct use of punctuation, grammar and staying believable as a character. Again, if you cannot follow that example, use a spellchecker (Word) or simply drop out.

Character creation:
Those with the full intent of starting this story (and hopefully also finishing it in one piece) who have trouble creating a suitable character, can discuss this with me through RPGC mail and I will aid in setting up a character with you. During the play itself, some of you may get wounded (and if one acts really stupid, like charging at the infamous Smaug with a simple blade, expect your character to come to a stupid demise) during the travel, it happens, so live with it.

Now I will ask again how many of you are interested in this 'The Hobbit' like adventure.

~Caelin~

Well I wondered what had happened to this story idea! It does seem that a lot of threads start off with a big bang, and then slowly fizzle out. Though there are some exceptions to that general rule here - so I don't think every thread is destined to the same fate.

I'm still up for the adventure - so if we get enough folks on board, then I'll work with you through e-mail to get a character put together. Can we give her the magical ability of turning water into chocolate?!? :D

Not all of them are, just the majority. Hence my point. :)

Count me in also Cae but if I may make a small suggestion? A party of predominantly elves, a lone dunedain and a single hobbit might get a bit stale (since elvish personalities are supposedly quite subtle there may be little party interaction). You might want to think about opening the cast up a little...

Oh crimey - I have to be subtle?!?

I'll never make it as an elf. (shaddup Arandur)

Hmm, I think that may be a good suggestion, Arandur. Perhaps one or two more humans and a dwarf or two might pose some interesting conversations as well. ;)

and a dwarf or two might pose some interesting conversations as well.

What do elves west of the Misty Mountains know about caves? It has been long ages since Nargothrond and a hobbit hole is not a cave and a hobbit is not a dwarf.
If it is caves you are interested in then I, Mabin, son of Hadin of the Blue Mountains is at your service.

Hobbits are all well and good to share a pipe and an ale with but you really do need a fellow dwarf to discuss the finer points of mining. Glad to have you along. I think we are still waiting for a few of the elves to get their gear together and then we are off.

I will come up with my own char, thats not really based off anything. I did some research and realized there are so many dwarves that are not mentioned, so why not make my own. Disregard the revious post that was here :P

Caelin, you never told me if I should find out all I can about that Ranger Dunedain or just wing it. I suppose I should learn about him but I have no clue as to where to start.

Caelin, you never told me if I should find out all I can about that Ranger Dunedain or just wing it. I suppose I should learn about him but I have no clue as to where to start.

While there is great deal to know about the Dunedain of Arthedain (the last of the three kingdoms of Arnor to fall), I can give you a short intro that should suffice.
Once upon a time there was a mighty kingdom known as Arnor. For centuries it flourished in the cool north, spread over many hills and while in the south its sister kingdom battled, it enjoyed peace.
Then to the far north a dark presence came, this was the Witchking. To him gathered many monsters and men bent on the destruction of the kingdom. If this was not terrible enough one of the kings of this kingdom upon his death split the kingdom three ways, allocating one to each of his sons.
First to fall to the Witchking was Rhudaur, the eastern realm. The Dunedain always only marginally held this so it came as little surprise.
Then Cardolan, to the south, the ancestral burial fields of the dunedain fell in a mighty invasion.
Arthedain endured many more years but it was tested beyond its means. A final invasion wiped it out, but along with this the Witchking's might was also broken.
This would be the end to the tale except that not everyone was killed. A fragment of the people survived, amongst them the son of the king. Their kingdom destroyed, they sought not to rebuild to remain a shadow people, with small enclaves dotted through the hills of Evandim, and their would-be king renounced the title instead adopting the title Chieftain for a king without a kingdom is not a king at all.
Since that time this is how they have lived, on the frontier, their 'royalty' trained in Rivendell, secretly, under the guise as rangers, defending the rural folk from the predators and bandits in the wilderness, protecting their legacy in the hope that one day they can return to the old ways.
‘The crownless again shall be king!’

Exile, Mica provided you with a good guideline, for the rest you can make up as you go.

NicolasD'puppybrush' ;) , that will be rather too short for a character sheet. ;) and btw, you're on an XP of -3 right now. You aim to drop lower? :p

I think it is going to be time to start the thread, so I will open it soon. You can post your character profiles in the ooc thread, which will be opened along with the story thread.

Well Nico, you do not seem to be gaining any points either, despite the fact that you are posting.
