Six years ago, the world was unchanged....
Six years ago, the world was safe- well, as safe as the twenty-first century could be...
Then one cold January morning, everything changed...
Disaster brought to our world by a menace known only to a precious few...

One known as Raislin Majere to those few....
The God of destruction by all others... To those who know this god for who he was, the stories they had read were wrong... he succeeded where the stories say he had failed... Somehow he attained godhood and when he had finished with Krynn, he turned his eyes to other worlds... starting with ours... his “World Beyond”

Six years ago, technology was our only weapon... airplanes and birds were the only things in the sky, and a small band of reluctant adventurers were our only hope...

Now, magic is also a part of our arsenal... While creatures of legend rule the skies... and the hope of the world lies in the hands of a child.

The forest was thick here, birds chirping joyfully in the summer sun... A little girl played amongst the trees, sheltered beneath their canopy. She was only five years old, having just had her birthday celebration at the beginning of spring. Her soft brown hair fell to her shoulders in gentle waves, and her eyes were the gray-green of the sea.

For as long as she could remember, their family was a large one...though they weren’t all really related. Her mother told her family didn’t always include blood relatives. She wore ragged clothing, though her mother did her best to keep them in good repair and clean, and a silver star hung around her neck.

She was tossing a ball made of rags ahead of her, and a small dragon-like creature would race ahead and snag it in its jaws. It made soft chirruping sounds and it’s wings buzzed as it tried to decide whether or not to return it to her.

“Kirin... Come on...bring it back!” The girl cried, laughing. The dragonet squealed, it’s coppery-brown scales glimmered dully in the bright sunlight. stretching out it’s neck and tail, the dragonet was barely two feet in length, and was not as intelligent as some of it’s larger cousins.

“Reni!? where are you?” Called a familiar voice... Her mother.

“Here!” Reni cried, and turned to run to her mother. The dragonet, Kirin ran after the child, finally catching up and leaping to curl around the girl’s shoulders.

“Reni, please don’t wander off like that... you know that the woods aren’t safe...” Heather said, gently chastising.

“But mom, the birds were chirping.... and Kirin wasn’t afraid..” Reni whined while Kirin chirruped and dropped the rag-ball.

"Besides," Came a voice from inside the woods, "I would have shooed her out anyway," Hopping out fromone of the higher branches was a woman, perhaps in her earlier twenties. She had hazel eyes, and glasses, and a frizz of brown hair that was half in a bun and half falling in frizzies around her face. Despite her youth she looked like she had been working out, and her habit of scaling trees was well known. On her should perched a hawk-like creature. She smiled and Heather and Rini. Her clothing was dirt-smeared, but that was more from sitting in trees, and it looked very broken in and old.

"So, how have you two been? How's Kirin?" She said, looking down at Rini with a grin and ruffling the girl's hair.

The years had not been entirely kind to him. The Dark Master, the representative for the evil's of the Earth, and the one chosen to be its force of resistance against Majere. Martin's skin had paled dramatically, years of hiding within the darkness of the Night, the dark magic..... even now he still could shudder, but a coldness had frozen his heart gradually, and few suspected he was little else than a human shell, housing the black energies of his Art. For now though, he stood some distance from the three figures, his eyes all for Serenity, lost in the shadows around him..... What is to happen this time round I wonder....

Heather paused, as a feeling akin to a cloud scuttling over the warm sunlight passed over her. She turned her gaze away from her daughter and Hannah to stare into the shadows... certain the presence she felt was familiar...

Hannah looked up from Rini and quirked an eyebrow at Heather, "What'ja sense, Heath? Something besides the usual gloom and doom, I hope, becuase I"m getting damn tired of that quickly. Was tired quite some time ago but I guess no one really cares about me, heh?" She undid the bun in her hair and collected the pieces of hair that had fallen out, redoing the bun quickly and somewhat messily, then wiping the smears of dirt on her hands onto her pants. Her pants were damaged beyond repair from this method, but she couldn't care less. Most people who knew her said that she'd not grown a year since Raistlin had come, except in body.

Heather smiled, and shook her head. "nothing too gloomy or doom-filled, Poddy..." She said, and held out her hands, picking up Reni. "And of course we care about you, no need to get bratty..." Heather laughed... six years... at thirty-one years Heather hadn't changed much, she still had the same beliefs and the same odd sense of humor.

"it's only Martin... don't worry, he'll come out when he wants to, if he didn't want me to know he was here, I wouldn't have."

"Me, bratty? I'm insulted." replied Hannah with a good-natured smirk, her sarcastic wit keeping firmly in place over the time, "I can't believe you, Heath! All this time...and you think I"m bratty. ugh." She winked and followed Heather's eyes to the darkness, feeling it ripple in her own self in the oddest way possible, "Oy, vey, that be Martini alright, being kind of spooky and ghostish. Hey, Martini, quit doing the shivery thingy!"

Erica was twenty-three now, and looked as if she was nearly Heather’s age, crow’s feet formed around her eyes from almost constant squinting and frown lines both marked her as one who had been through much. Her hair was cut short, almost boyishly so, and was kept that way so that she didn’t have to bother with it much—who had had time to worry about such fuss as their hair in the past six years, especially the little band of so-called “heroes” who were nothing more than role-players with imagination and a marginal amount of courage? Because of how short it was, Erica’s naturally curly hair laid in soft ringlets and her hair was now more blonde than brown from being in the sun so much. Her dark green eyes still held a silvery cast to them, and had retained a little of the better eyesight that they had had during the time the “heroes” were battling Raistlin, though she still needed glasses to see properly. She’d given up on contacts some time ago, and really couldn’t afford—or find—them anywhere anyways… at least, not anymore. Contacts were a novelty that just didn’t have a chance now of days. For instance, getting a-hold of new clothe was a miracle, and then you often had to stitch it yourself. This was why the clothes the young woman wore would have been considered rags six years ago… and as she looked down at her torn jeans and her tee-shirt that was growing threadbare from being washed so much.

She sighed as she heard the familiar voices of Heather, Hannah, and little Serenity and put the once-bejeweled dagger in a guard at her hip, knowing it would no longer be needed. A prickling at the back of her neck told her that Martin was also present, and she sent her own signature caution towards him and the others so not to startle them: she let the visage of a Silver/Red dragoness dance across their awareness and waited a moment for them to recognize her before she walked out where they could see her.

Behind her back was a package of dear soft green fabric, wrapped in equally-precious paper that could be used for writing. As she came nearer, she smiled down at Reni and then at Heather and Hannah. “So how is our darling little one doing today, hmm?” She asked the child, bending down to her level and still holding the package behind her back, her eyes glittering with excitement to see the little girl. She loved children, and often enough they felt the same about her, but this was a child that the young woman felt was even closer to her heart than most, which was the reason for the costly fabric hidden behind her back.

Reni looked at Erica and giggled. "Whatcha hiding behind your back Eri?" The little girl asked, her grey-green eyes bright with curiosity.

"Is that how you say hello Serenity?" Heather adimonished Reni flushed and glanced at her mother quickly before turning back to Erica.

"Hello Eri..." She said sheepishly. Heather smiled, as Kirin had curled up around her shoulder, his wings tangled in her hair, tail tightly wrapped around her upper arm. Though she smiled she couldn't help but worry and wonder of her daughter... God-touched as she was... and not a God of this world.

There were many times that she wondered just what power Reni harbored....

Carolyn saw the gathering of her friends, each greeting each other and talking as if no time had passed between them. The young woman sighed. It had been 6 years since she had seen these peolple in person, these people that were some of her closest friends, but she suddenly felt shy about approaching them.

Care was 32 years old now, though as always, she looked much younger than her actual age. Though in her thirties, she looked to be in her early to mid twenties, some even commented that she had to be in her late teens. This day Carolyn wore a pair of faded jeans that had long ago seen better days and a dark blue t-shirt. Her long dark brown hair hung to her waist in a tight braid and her silver wire-rimmed glasses sat on her nose in front of rich brown eyes. The ever present silver pentacle, only one sign of of her beliefs, hung on a delicate silver chain around her neck. Standing in the shadow of a large tree, the young woman looked as if she could simply melt into her surroudings.

Standing. Now that was one thing she still hadn't gotten used to. It was one of the abilities she had retained when she and her friends had gathered against Raistlin 6 years ago. In addition, she had also manged to keep some of her magical abilites from when she had taken on the traits of one of her role-playing characters. Almost like that experience had changed Carolyn herself somehow, she still had access to the various abilities, though on a somewhat lower scale. She did her best to keep the information as private as possible, unless absolutely nessasary.

Shaking her head at how silly she was being for hanging back so long, Care made her way over to the group. "Hi everyone. Good to see you all." She smiled softly at her friends before turning to the little girl at Heather's side. Hello Reni."

Stepping out of the darkness, Martin nodded to Heather and the others now since gathered. " You know I like to make an entrance. ", a simper of a smile twitched on his lips, and he treaded further forward, now standing but mere feet from Reni. From the way he walked, it was obvious he had a severe limp, as one would have after suffering a costly injury to the leg. " I hope I find all well? "

"Eh, Not too badly. I could go for a good computer, a new pair of pants, and a few other various items. I am a tree hugging little elf wannabe. Is that bad?" It was easy to see that the girl liked trees: her clothing was smugded with dirt, her hazel green eyes sparkled, and she hadn't fallen out of a tree for six years, "The only thing I lack is the pointy ears. As you can see, I haven't changed very much," SHe smiled sarcastically, "Trees have little effect on one's personality."

She raised an eyebrow at Martin, "YOu seem to have banged yourself up, Martini. Did you hit your evil leg on a table made of good, or something of that odd like, or did you just get shot?"

Laura chuckled softly at Hannah's question and stepped forward leaving her hiding place in the shadows. In her mid thirties she looked ageless, but the thin wrinkles around her eyes witnessed the hard times she had been through. Her hair was completely white. It had been Raistlin's work during their adventure 6 years earlier and it hadn't gone back to its natural colour after they had defeated Raistlin.

She wore a long black velvet dress and a black velvet cape. Her green eyes glittered and it was still possible to see a black hourglass between her eyes. The colour had faded, but it was still there. She hadn't been able to remove it in spite of all her efforts. She approached the rest of the group and nodded with a small smile on her lips.

"It's nice to see that you are all alive... Why are we all here? What's the reason of this gathering?"

...Entering the clearing, a tall, broad-shouldered, blonde haired man strode in from between the trees, his raggedly cut-blonde hair caught on the soft breeze as his blue eyes swept across those who had gathered there and a warm, lopsided smile sliding across his face. It had been a long six years since he had seen them, so much had happened and the world had changed dramatically. He couldn’t decide whether it was better or worse. He decided it was better.

He spotted the diminutive figure of Serenity and though he tried to suppress it, he couldn’t help but smile, she had gotten so much bigger in such a short time, he remembered her still in swaddling clothes. At thirty-five, Dean couldn’t believe the last six years of his life, they were like a surreal dream that had at times turned darker into a nightmare. He looked to Reni again with his blue eyes. Hope. A last dying flickering flame of hope in a strangely familiar world.

He stopped short and ran his sun-darkened left hand through his blonde hair, past the faded hourglass marking that sat in the centre of his forehead. He hated that mark, but it was part of him now and he had learned to accept that over the years. Emotions were sweeping and twisting inside him as he saw faces that had become to mean so much to him gently touched by the hand of time. Laura, Erica, Care, Heather, Hannah and of course Martin. He was a little shocked by how Martin had degenerated over the years. Dean idly wondered if it was Martin that had made him feel the need to return here.

He came to the group quietly and without word, stopping a half step to Care’s left and listening to Laura’s question with curiousity, his gloved right hand resting almost casually on the sword belted at the hip of his faded denim jeans. He hated that weapon but had learned to get used to the heavy weight over the last years, the heavy weight on his hip and also his soul.

“Hey Kitten…” he said quietly to Care with a good natured smile that lit up his blue eyes…

Martin gave Hannah a cool appraising glance. " Something like that, yes. ", and that was all he said, turning his gaze to the approaching figure of Dean, where he showed little sign of emotion in any sense, but in that, there was much more. In truth, the cause of his injury was something more serious than a simple bang against a table..... however the details of such would be left for Heather at a less populous time.

Elsewhere...

The chains the bound him weren't just physical... His grey-green eyes where closed in exhaustion, long dark brown hair falling around his shoulders. His frame was lanky and thin...too thin...

Eat

A table laden with food appeared before him, and his stomach rumbled and roiled in disgust at the same time. He turned his head away and in the dimly glowing light, a tattoo of a feathered dragon became visible on his right arm.

"Leave me alone..." He whispered, his voice hoarce

Eat... I will not have my Avatar die of hunger... EAT! The voice rumbled, and the man trembled as a wash of fear and pain made him cradle his head in misery. When the pain passed, he numbly began to eat, tasting none of it. His mind was turned to the past six years, and his failed attempts to protect his family....

Heather caught Martin's eye and raised an eyebrow in question and recieved a silent shake of his head. Her eyes misted with tears that she quickly blinked away. Martin was the only person she knew who could truely look everywhere for him... David where have you gone?

Suppressing her dissapointment, she hugged Reni close to her.

"Yes, what does bring all of you here? I haven't seen many of you for nigh on five years." She asked wondering. Reni giggled at that, and when Heather looked into her daughter's eyes the child smiled and spoke softly.

"I called them mommy... for the time has come...." All Heather could do was stare at her child in shock.

Reni looked at Erica and giggled. "Whatcha hiding behind your back Eri?" The little girl asked, her grey-green eyes bright with curiosity.

"Me? Hiding something? And you think it's behind my back?" The young woman questioned, a smile lighting up her face, and especially her dark green eyes. "Are you sure?" She asked, cocking her head to the side before bringing the package in front of her. She examined the package as if she'd never seen it before, a mask of astonishment and confusion covering her amusement. "Now where did that come from? Hmm, here, why don't you take it, dear one... I surely don't know what to do with it!"

Erica watched in amusement as the little girl opened the package and found the material inside. "Your Mom here can make you a nice new dress with this.. and I am sure she'd love to keep the paper for herself. What do you think, Heath?" She asked, smiling up at the woman and adding mentally--one of the talents she was able to retain--'I saw it and I just had to get it for her... especially since I missed her birthday...'

By this time Erica had stood and was nodding to the rest of her companions who had gathered around, but when the little girl giggled so innocently... she was dumbfounded.

Laura grinned shortly when Dean joined them, then her face became an expressionless mask again and she turned her attention to the others. She frowned hearing Serenity say that it was her who had summoned them.

"And why did you want us to come here, child?" she asked in a tone that was sharper than she had intended to. She didn't love children and felt a little irritated for being manipulated by a 6 years old. But she also knew that the little girl was an important key and had powers that were probably greater than the rest of them. She rubbed her forehead nervously as she used to do when something was bothering her. I am afraid something is terribly wrong, but I do hope I am mistaken...

Reni looked at Laura, the sympathy evident in her eyes. "He is closer... his power has grown. He controls a human with power as his avatar... we must free him... His power will only grow the longer he controls this man..." The child was unusually solmn, and for a brief moment, to Heather's gaze a multi-colored aura surrounded her daughter.

"Do you know who this man is?" Heather asked softly, kneeling before Reni. The little girl nodded, tears filling her large eyes. Heather, alarmed by her child's unexpected tears, reached out and held her close.

"It's Daddy...." She cried.

Heather could only cling to her daugher in shock... Could it be? Goddess no... "David? How??" She whispered softly, and then in wonder, she realized that Reni had never actually known her father, being as he dissapeared before she was born... and yet knew it was him...

"Are you sure honey?" She asked, her eyes met Martin's and held his gaze as the child merely nodded.

Oh my god... thought Laura. Raistlin was back... But she had never truly believed that the "war" against him was over. It had only been a matter of time and she had spent the last few years getting ready for that moment. She sighed tiredly. She hoped things could be different.

She was touched by Reni's tears, but didn't show it. Her father was Raistlin's avatar... Things were getting worse and worse... She sat down and leaned back against a tree.
"What are we going to do now? We can't let Raistlin get more powerful than he already is. We have to find David. I'm sure we all agree on this. Reni, do you know where your father is and how we can reach him?"

04/24/2004 5:15 PM

Listening to Martin and Hannah speak, Care watch the young man silently. He looked thinner and paler than the last time she had seen him, and there still seemed to be something of a shadow around him. It looked like he hadn't seen a day of peace since they they had defeated Raistlin.

Hearing two sets of footsteps approaching, she turned to see Laura, and then a couple moments later, Dean. She nodded to them both, happy to see them again. At Dean's familiar nickname for her, a momentary grin lit up her dark eyes. A grin that quickly turned to concern as she turned back to Heather and Reni, and the conversation they were having.

Raistlin has taken David as an avatar?!, she thought silently to herself.

PrincessOfDarkness
04/24/2004 5:29 PM

Hannah's eyes flashed irratation at Laura's sharp tone, but quickly changed it into her typical sarcastic glance, then back at Reni. She loooking absolutely speechless (a rare thing) and could think of absolutely nothing snide to say. (even rarer)

Even thought she was shocked at all of this, the wheels in her mind continued to click, subconscious ruthlessnes putting it together. This is why she had practiced so much. This is why she lived in trees. This is why she has praticed arts hardly found. To be unique. To help her friends. THe idea strunk her as a revelation in the back of her mind, then slowly crawled into her conscious thoughts.

"C'mon, Heather, stay strong," She whispered to her friends, "WE'll get your husband back."

…Dean looked to the group gathered around him at Reni’s proclamation of David’s predicament, his mind barely aware of his gloved right hand tightening around the hilt of his the weapon that hung from his left hip. It was a movement that had come over time, a movement that came so easily it made him uneasy. He realized what he was doing as the slow prickling of the skin of his palm radiated painfully, and he glanced down and with an effort removed his hand from the hilt, tucking it into the pocket of his faded denims.

He kept his face as neutral as he could, his usual lopsided smile that seemed ever present around his friends had faded into the grim line he normally wore these days, as he listened to the declarations of his friends. His thoughts strayed to David, Heather and little Serenity. And he felt his heart sink, he hoped David could be saved, but he had learnt the hard way that sometimes wishes were things that slipped from your grasp the harder you wanted them. He shot a glance to Martin and wondered if the other man was thinking thoughts as dark as his own. Probably darker, much darker…

04/24/2004 8:18 PM

Erica listened to Reni and was as shocked as the rest when she reveiled the avatar as being her father. I might have known, she thought to herself. It is a cunning fit... if you can't have the girl, have one of her parents, her lineage... and since He couldn't get Heather...

Her mouth set into a grim line and she nodded her head when Hannah mentioned them getting the man back. "This is why we are together still, Heather... to help each other. And like Hannah said, we will get him back. Why else would we have been training and honing our skills that we've been able to keep? We are yours to command, dearheart." She said emphatically, a nod of her head being used to confirm her statement as she looked from Heather to Serenity and back again.

04/25/2004 3:45 AM

Meeting Heather's gaze, she saw the confirmation to Reni's words, though he doubted she needed any further proof than her Daughter's own statement. " Yes, David is the Avatar of Raistlin, and a potent one he is. However..... ", there was a small silence in his sentence, and his eyes shut as though trying to decide on something. " I have my doubts that David is entirely broken.... Majere may have chosen your husband, Heather, as his Avatar, but David is still human, and the Will of Men is not an easy thing to break, particularly.... when he has soo much to care for in this World. ", Martin's eyes rested on Reni, and a smile, the first true hint of humanity in a long time, touched his lips, but it vanished as swiftly as it had arrived. " But I am afraid getting David back will not be so easy a task as some of you here may, or may not, believe it to be. "

A pained expression passed his eyes, of remembered grief and suffering, yet like so much of his existence the passed years, they hardened with a cold intent, a devoid emotion steeling him. " Yet, it is not impossible.... merely.... difficult... ", again, he eyed Heather.

Cherizal
04/25/2004 4:05 AM

Laura nodded at Martin's words, a distant look in her eyes.
"I believe Martin is right. If Raistlin had succeeded in breaking David completely, he would already have used him against us or against Heather and Serenity at least. This hasn't happened yet, so I guess we have a chance to free him. And we'll do it, no matter how difficult it's going to be. But we won't accomplish anything with empty words. We need a plan and a destination." she said simply and got to her feet, ready to go wherever they were needed.

Dark_Master
04/25/2004 7:21 AM

" The question of destination is again..... another complicated matter, as is usual. ", he said with a rising hand towards Laura in an attempt to still her, to his mind, all too eager readiness. " David is beyond our reach for now..... I have been searching for him, as Heather has said, I can travel to areas where she and I doubt any of you, could. ", he stopped and allowed his eyes to rest on Reni. " However, Majere's chosen Avatar is further afield than even I can reach, I have not seen him, save perhaps an ecoh and a shadow of his passing, as Raistlin has taken great care to hide and secret David from us all. "

PrincessOfDarkness
04/25/2004 8:14 AM

"What Laura says is right, methinks," Hannah agreed, "Raistlin would have used David if he had him under control---funny under control, at least. And I think in order to figure out how to save him, we need to figure out where he is, and how he's under control." She glanced down at Reni, a smile gracing her face, "Can you tell us where he is, Reni?"

Kalia_Majere
04/25/2004 8:34 AM

Reni shook her head, now grinding away her tears with one fisted hand. "no... I only know that he hurts..." She said haltingly, hugging the package that Erica had given her close. Again, to Heather's eyes, that shimmering multi colored aura flickered around her daughter...then faded again.

Puting the appearance of the aura out of mind for a moment, Heather looked at the others. "What do we do? Wander around untill we stumble upon him, or use my daughter as some sort of Dowsing rod??" She was beginning to panic, and she knew it...

Cherizal
04/25/2004 8:45 AM

Laura grimaced and looked disappointed. She shrugged and started thinking about the matter.
"I guess that means David is not in this world?! Or maybe Raistlin is shielding him somehow so he can't even been reached by Martin?" she mused.

"Maybe Reni can find him with a little effort and our help. I know she is only a child, but do we have any other choice? And I am sure we will all do our best to protect her... That's the only possibility I see, unless we want to try to draw Raistlin's attention on us... I volounteer to kick his ass... And before you say anything... Don't worry, I know the danger. I'm not being bold and stupid, I just hate to twiddle my thumbs."

Dark_Master

What do we do? Wander around untill we stumble upon him, or use my daughter as some sort of Dowsing rod??

" That is one option, Heather, one that cannot be ruled out. ", it was only then that his eyes left Reni and found her mother's own. " She is 'God Touched', by Majere.... a particular part of his essence will reside in her no doubt, perhaps not much, but enough most likely for her to be able to feel him out. However, I would, as you'll appreciate, hesitate in such an action, as Majere would surely know of this possibilty...... ", depsite his words, there was an usual hopeful tone to his voice, as though he was not entirely convinced of his own statement and opinion.

" I can continue searching, through safer methods I think, however I will would have need of a few items first if you wished for me to attempt such? "

"A diversion might be good," Hannah injected, looking at Laura, "Raist might know Martini can do whatever he's doing, or something of that such. Either way, It is a little suspicious that the bunch of us are all here at the same time, and the same place, all with some power that we've worked on. I think, while Martin's doin whatever he's doing in the darkness, the rest of us should look either inconspicious or knock on Raistlin's door. Catch me drift?"

“While Martin is doing that, the rest of us could always pool our power and try to scry him out, given we had something that belonged to him that would still have his essence in or on it,” Erica said, looking around at her friends. “With all of us helping, I am sure that we will have enough power to find him on this and perhaps a couple other planes.” She again looked around at her friends, but this time to find their response to her proposal.

When Hannah made her suggestion, Erica nodded. "Yes, I do... perhaps we can work on a way to accomplish both at the same time?"

...Dean ran a tanned hand though his ragged blonde hair and shook his head to himself as he caught his blue eyes drifting to Reni… She’s just a kid, poor little mite… He looked across to the others as they spoke of Raistlin and of magic, their words meaning little to him, for unlike the others he had never known that kind of power, even when it was at his grasp the blonde man had fought against its lure with every fiber in his being. Like many times when the magic was needed he felt more than a little separated from the others.

His hand had unconsciously strayed to the hourglass symbol, now faded over the years, a reminder of Raistlin’s intrusion into his mind and perhaps his soul. He found himself idly wondering what Raistlin had found there in those depths, he wondered if such a touch on his soul had marked him in some way but banished the torrent of questions that was building with a firm shake of his head. Better to focus on ‘what is’ rather than the ‘what if.’

“We can’t just go and throw Reni to the wolves like that. I mean we don’t know anything at all about what Raistlin has been planning, don’t any of you think it’s a coincidence that he chose David as the vessel for his Avatar?” he said looking at everyone gathered with an incredulous gaze, he couldn’t believe that his friends, his extended family wanted to go racing so blindly into this. Knock on Raistlin’s door? He took a deep breath and began again, his left hand resting comfortingly upon the hilt of his blade.

“Look Raistlin must have chose David because of his connection to both Heather and Reni. Be it Spiritual, Emotional, Physical, Magical or whatever. We know he has been planning something for the past five years, hell for all we know this could have been part of his original scheme. Let’s not rush into things here, Serenity’s safety comes first and foremost. If you are going to scry him then perhaps don’t do it around Reni, what if he can find her though you? What if that is what he wants? Just be cautious.” He said firmly, meeting the gaze of those assembled with his deep blue eyes…

Carolyn's head almost spun with all the possibilities of what to do next. Listening to everyone's opinions and taking them all into account, she finally nodded. "I think Dean's right. Whatever we do, we should do so with great caution. We don't know know know what Raistlin has planned, but for all we know he's waiting for us to come to him, or use Reni to find her father. I do think a diversion would be a good idea while we scy for their location, but like Dean, I don't think we should do it around Reni. Now the question is...what type of diversion do we make?"

Laura sighed and started pacing back and forth trying to get an idea.
"First of all... yes, Serenity's safety is important, but the safety of the world is even more important! And if that means we'll have to sacrifice Reni, then we'll do that" She looked at the rest of them knowing that they would hate her for what she had just said, but she could not do anything about it. It was the truth and she was not looking for sympathy.

"I may have an idea... I don't know if it would work, but it could bring me and maybe Dean close to Raistlin. We can try to use our hourglasses to get in touch with him. We can make him think that we are on his side and when we get to him, we can distract him and give you a chance to find David. What do you think? Dean, do you still feel his call once in a while? I do and I have tried to shut it out all this time, but maybe it's time to answer..."

Martin supressed a sigh. " Pooling your power together will do little I'm afraid, trust me when I say, that if I cannot find him.... then I doubt any here will..... Reni's connection to her father, while useful, is still only very slight. Where-ever Majere has secreted David, it is a realm beyond our reach, and most likely is protected against intrusion and scrying. However, this is of course only my theory, feel free to try your efforts..... for now I must leave to collect a few things. ", Martin then moved, for the first time since he started speaking and glided over to Reni, where he bent down, so he was eye level, and placing a hand upon her shoulder, the Dark Master gave a gentle squeeze, whispering something for her mind and ears only before standing

" Farewell for now, I shall return with two days...... worry not, I will find you all where-ever you be. ", he gave a small nod of his head Heather, and treaded swiftly to the nearest tree, where he then disappeared into the shadow it cast.

Watching Martin vanish, Carolyn shook her head. Just as they seemed to be getting somewhere, albeit the smallest step, everything seemed to be as confusing as ever.

"But he makes sense," she continued aloud, half to herself, "where Raistlin has David, you can bet there are strong protections against being found. Perhaps even ones of defense. So where does that leave us? Either using Reni to find them, or Dean and Laura calling to him. Each option very dangerous, neither desirable in the least..."

Her small frame seemed to shimmer with a silvery glow for a second, as she shrugged helplessly. Frowning, she closed her eyes and took a couple deep breaths. After a few moments, the shimmer settled and then vanished altogether.

Giving an inward sigh of relief, Care opened her eyes as if nothing had happened. Looking at her friends, she said, "Though I retain some of my former abilities, unforunately none of them include being able to sense Raistlin, at least not him specifically, or this far away. We do have a few options as to what to do, and although I may not agree with or feel comfortable with some of them, I will add the full extent of my aid and power to whichever is chosen. Sadly, at the moment, I am unable to add anything more to the options we already have."

Heather was only partially listening to what was going on... her own power was reaching out, searching... and upon failing, she sighed, and looked to her daughter for a long moment when something interrupted her thoughts.

The little dragon had had curled up around her shoulders began to chitter in an excited way... it's bright orangish gold eyes fixed on hers, it's reptilian muzzle up close while its wings buzzed in agitation. She had often suspected that the little earth dragon could understand human speech but lacked the ability to speak it.

"What is it Kirin?" She wondered, and without warning the dragonet lept from her shoulder to perch on Hannah's, this time chittering to her... knowing that this human could at least understand.

Wise one go see should you... Great her knowledge is, Help you she could. Child to her must go... Dragon Queen of the Earth she is...

Hannah nodded to Kirin, patting it's shoulder, "We--Reni, specifically, but I think it's too dangerous for her to go alone-- should to see the Wise One, the Dragon Queen of Earth She knows alot, maybe she can help.... apparently. That's what Kirin says, at least...I'm not sure what or who that is, but s'what I"ve been told."

The hawkish creature on Hannah's other shoulder screeched. Very smart is the Dargon Mother, only I have heard of her, her knowledge is more then owl, such is supposed...

"Thank you, Sarin...yes, it seems that the Dragon Queen would be the best place to go.."

"Ok, then we'll go see this Dragon Queen. I hope it won't be a waste of time. Does anyone know where she lives? Or maybe we'll have to search for her first and see if any of us can sense her?" she asked, her tone slightly sarcastic. She felt exasperated and hated the situation. They had been there before. Last time they had all met, it had happened exactly the same. They had spent too much time talking and talking without really say anything of value.

"Hannah, could you ask Kirin if he knows where we should go? And what about you Erica, have you heard of her before?"

That Night ( For Matin )

The Circle of Stone had stood for centuries, many centuries. The pagan's used it as a place of worship, Martin had the same intentions at present also. Stone Henge, the Old Power surrounding this site ran deep into the earth, rooted in Rock and Blood, and it was that power he intended to tap into. Luckily for him, since Rasitlin's emergence into Earth, Stone Henge had become somewhat avoided, the reason to which still eluded him, however it was not hard in making an accurate assumption. Before him, on the cracked and weathered stone alter, lay a bound and terrified lamb, its white coat gleaming silver in the overhead moonlight. A decorative and ornately carved knife was clutched in his right hand, his left holding the lamb's throat.

From the Shadow I do call
Rise now as you did fall
The Powers' dance and ever sing
In their Hymn, blood does ring

Take this offering I do declare
Of its life, I do not spare
Heart and soul I commend to you
Unholy Masters, your bidding I do...

His voice was little but a whisper, but the words rang out louder in the darker places of the world, deep into the earth and high into the sky, carried by the rising soul and dripping blood of a freshly slaughtered sacrifice. At first silence met his Calling, and silence did also answer in kind.

And what gives you the right to summon us, Mortal?

Martin merely remained motionless, the bloody knife still held in hand. " I need no right, Ancient Ones, it was you after all whom gave me the Power to call and fight.... "

Cold laughter met his response, many voices chortling as one, resonating loudly in his mind and ecohing off the standing stones. Yes, that we did, Martin, and so far we have yet to regret that Choice, due to such, you have earned our respect, if such a thing resides within us., there was an odd ringing of truth in their words, an oddity that caused the hairs on the back of his neck to rise, he disliked their honesty to say the least, for it often meant more than their words implied.

" If that is so, then I ask a favour, in return for this Blood. You know what it is I have been searching for..... Rasitlin Majere-- ", pain entered his head, and the ground shook.

Mentioned not His name! We thought you to have more Intelligence! You are not the only ones to be fighting him, Mortal Imbodiment of Us, do you think we are sitting back and allowing him to simply make himself supreme?!, their words hissed with such venom, that Martin remained silent. We know what you seek, and it is beyond our power to aid you in the Search. But those companions of yours, they are close to finding a way.

At this Martin started, " They know of a way?! And did not care to part with the knowledge?! ", anger thrummed in him, at them all, at Heather.... " Why do I bother in aiding then if they already have a way! "

Silence, Mortal! We said they are close to finding a way, not that they have procured one! Once you have returned, all will be known to you, but for now, we will give what help we can..... in return, you must promise to be obligated to us for a single task, nothing more, nothing less, one task.

Martin hesitated for but a heartbeat, and he knew they noticed this, however, the Dark Master nodded in kind. " I vow to perform whatever task you ask of me in return for the information you care to pass to me.... ", there was no smile, no mirth in his statement, and he knew that they then bound him with his word in the very blood he sacrificed to call them into this world.

Yes, and we will hold you to it, least your life, and more importantly, your soul, will be forfeit.

They whispered in his mind, and to the world they were silent as death.... for it was that which they spoke of....

When Kirin had spoken, Erica noticed that she understood snatches of what he said "Wise One" and "Dragon Queen". What Hannah said confirmed it and the young woman nodded her head, buried memories trying to peek through the surface of her mind.

"And what about you Erica, have you heard of her before?"

Hearing Laura, Erica was snapped out of her reverie. "I think so," she said slowly. "The memory is trying to make itself known, but it's difficult... part of it seems to be what Airiana left over for me, but the rest... a story that I heard once... almost sounds like... Tiamat?"

Her chittering switched to a screetch as she treid to peer up at Sarin, who had decided to perch on her head, Do you, Sarin?. The hawk shook her head in an suprisingly humanlike gesture as Hannah's hands stop moving and her voice switched back to usual, "And get off my head, I can't see what you're doing up there."

Sarin screetched a responce and fluttered off to a nearby tree., glaring at his human compaion.

I thought the Dragon Queen was just a legend...

Care stooped, shaking her head at herself. Of course the Mother of the Dragons was more then legend. With the appearance of Raistlin on the world, other things had changed as well. The lack of technology, the appearence of magic, and of course dragons. It was hard to believe how much things had changed in a few short years....

Looking at Erica, Carolyn nodded. "Your right, The Dragon Queen does remind me of Tiamat. From what I can remember, Babylonian myths tell Tiamat a a huge female dragon that personifies the saltwater ocean, the water of Chaos. She is also the primordial mother of all that exists, including the gods themselves. I don't remember all the details, but Tiamat was eventually killed by a god Marduk. When he killed her, her two halves became the water and the sky...

I don't know if that helps any...like I said don't remember all the details..."

Airiana
04/27/2004 7:55 PM

Erica listened to Carolyn's abbreviated tale and nodded. "Exactly. Tiamat and her mate Apsu basically got fed up with their offspring... first their children Lachmy and Lachamu, then their children Ansar and Kisar, their children Anu and Ea, and so on and so forth, until the number of them bugged Tiamat and Apsu so much that they decided to kill them. Ea found out and killed Apsu while he was sleeping. Tiamat got pissed, and decided to avenge her hubby's death with an army of wicked baddies, led by her new hubby/son Kingu. A young god named Marduk, however, defeated her. He split her in half and created the skies with one half and the Earth with the other. Her tears became the Tigris and Euphrates... I think Marduk eventually killed Kingu too. Yeah, actually, he used Kingu's blood to create the first humans." She said, nodding to herself after a moment. "But I dunno how that legend'll help us... if it holds true, then we're standing on and breathing Tiamat right now."

“Or that no one is addressing the fact that we would be seeking the Wisdom of a giant winged Lizard that would eat her own children.” Dean said suddenly, his hand still resting on his sword as he ran a hand though his raggedy blonde hair and looked to the sky for a moment, his expression one lost in thought. “I don’t know what is worse, the not knowing or the knowing that we are going to have to trust in either a Dragon or Magic for this.” He said quietly with a shake of his head. It had all been so much less complicated before the War, he understood things then and felt like he was in control of his destiny. Now he felt pulled along by the current of events, floundering in the vastness of things he didn’t understand. The Unknown.

“I mean from what we know, this Dragon Queen may be just as territorial as some of the others are. I saw what is left of Detroit City with my own eyes, it’s a lair to a Silver Dragon that carries none of the good qualities we thought Silvers would. The damn place is just a pile of Rubble where the beast rules over a haggard people who toady to its every whim.” He said shaking his head in sorrow.

His thoughts strayed to the first time he had seen a Silver Dragon during the War, his hopes had soared briefly and then been smashed when he found that the dragons cared little for good or evil. He had found in his experience the majority was neutral. Powerful, majestic and exceptionally selfish. He knew there were those that were good and noble, but where Dragons and Magic were concerned Dean had learned to be cynical. Rely on yourself and those you trust.

He was quiet for a moment, his thoughts reflecting on five years of travel and wandering, soaking up stories of survivors about this strange new world. Five years searching for a way to return home to Melbourne to find how all he had known before the War had fared, but it was all just now a faded memory.

There were not many ships crazy enough to make an open journey across the seas with Sea Dragons waiting to snatch an unwary ship from the blackened depths, despite that he had found a few in California that were crazy enough, the blonde man didn’t have enough barter to book a passage. Few did these days but then what exactly was the cost of a man's life?

He sighed and picked idly at the hemline of his faded black shirt, still thinking about his journeys the last five years. Before his mind snapped back to the problem at hand, causing him to start suddenly and lift his head to the others. “Well has anyone got any ideas at all on how to find this Dragon Queen? The little dragon-thing?” he said looking to the dragonet with questioning blue eyes…

"Wait a second... I think you are rushing to conclusions... I mean you are talking about a myth, a legend. And even if this Tiamat actually exists, how can we know that she is a real dragon. Anyone or anything could be called dragon queen. It could be a person, a ghost, a spirit, an oracle that sit on a throne covered in dragon skin... "

She had learnt the hard way that people and all the other creatures seldom were what they seemed to be. They were usually disguised or hid terrible secrets. She sighed.
"But no matter what, I guess we don't have any choice..." She pause and fixed her eyes on Kirin waiting for his answer impatiently.

Erica shook her head. “She wasn’t going to eat them, just kill them because they were annoying. And trusting dragons and magic is not the worst thing we could do. Remember that for a while I was a dragon, and have the soul of one besides. I can still remember some of their speech, and what I can’t Hannah can. Not only that, but haven’t you ever noticed that when Heather and I are around we’ve never been attacked by a dragon? That’s because we’re kin-souled. So long as we don’t run into a soul-enemy among dragonkind, we have nothing to fear from them. Yeah, we found out that here on Earth, the color of a dragon’s scales has nothing to do with their alignment, but does it among humans? How many have turned from the Light and gone to Raistlin, hmm? Too many for my liking, and that’s because we are the same as the Earth dragons in that respect: you can’t tell just by looking.” At this she sighed and shook her head, worried for Dean and how pessimistic he was.

“Well has anyone got any ideas at all on how to find this Dragon Queen? The little dragon-thing?”

Erica looked up at this and glanced at Heather. “Do you remember the kin-calling spell? We could try it. It is said that all those who are dragon in spirit are descendent of Tiamat and the other Gods of Dragons. We could try it. And if that doesn’t work, we could try to have Kirin lead us to her.”

"Wait a second... I think you are rushing to conclusions... I mean you are talking about a myth, a legend. And even if this Tiamat actually exists, how can we know that she is a real dragon. “Tiamat was the first dragon, and thus the most powerful. She is also called Draconis, though that is the male aspect of her usually. She is all around you and all of dragonkind are descendent from her, whether they are dragon in soul or body.” She stated simply with a shrug of her shoulders. “If you don’t believe me, ask little Kirin here who is the One Mother, the First… I am sure Hannah will translate for you if you don’t trust me to do it.”

After telling what she could remember of Tiamat, Carolyn fell silent once more as she listened to the others discuss the exsistance of the Dragon Mother in their world, and the idea of using such a creature in their plan. She understood Dean's feelings in not being in a hurry to contact a dragon, it was well known that the color of a dragon didn't necessarily tell its alignment. The colors that years ago everyone meant Light, in reality were shown to be as visious as any other "dark" counterpart. Yes, Dean's reservations were well founded.

But if Erica was right about the dragon-souled thing, and it couldn't be denied that no dragon had ever attacked them while Heather and Erica were around, perhaps their plan to see the Dragon Mother would work. Perhaps she would help them. Carolyn shrugged. Like Laura had said, it wasn't like they had much choice at the moment.

Turning back toward the group, she waited to hear Heather's and Kirin's thoughts on the subject.

Martin stood silent within the Circle of Stones, the Ancient Ones long having departed. No expression betrayed his thoughts and his eyes never blinked. He simply stared into the darkness, wishing it to devour him, and save him from what the furture had in store....for them all. It was only then that the Dark Master sighed, waving a hand towards the slaughtered lamb, it vanished without a trace, however the blood remained upon the stone, now stained dark. " Never easy..... never.... ", Martin turned and he himself then vanished from sight, snaking once more into the Shadows of the World, walking them as he would a simply laid out path. Whispers filled this Shadow-world, silent screams ecohed endlessly, and the chill of death and fear blew ever passed him, yet..... he could fell it not. Something to be thankful for he assumed.

Heather frowned, and reched out her hand to the little dragon, and he lept to her shoulder. This contact strengthened the mental images the little creature was sending. A dragon hardly god-like, at least this was in Heather's opinion...not much bigger than Kirin really....about the size of a large dog...

Scales of gold, copper and brown, a face akin to a wolf, and the body similar to a serpent... this dragon "queen" was truely of the earth...the creature wouldn't have been able to fly if it even wanted to.

"No, somehow I don't think that our myths truely apply... this is merely the mother of the dragons that are tied to the earth... a dragon similar to Kirin here, his wings cannot carry him, but he can glide a short distance... anyway, our myths are only based in truth, they aren't the literal truth...."

She sighed and rubbed the dragon's throat, and it trilled in pleasure. "I think that he can lead us... what do you think Hannah?"

Martin stepped out of the darkness in daylight, the stark and sudden contrast in illumination causing his eyes to squint severely and stagger back a few paces, bring a hand to his forehead to bring what solace he could from the harsh, blazing sun. “ You’d think I’d be used to this by now…” , he grumbled irritably, but never the less eventually carried on forwards, making his way towards the entrance of the Cave. Martin looked around for any signs of life, in particular that of Heather, Reni or one of the others, but none were present, however he was not entirely surprised by this, even for their collective intelligence he did not think them to be here so soon, without his methods of travelling anyway.

The air smelled rancid almost…but of what he could not exactly say at present. It was an odd mix of sweet scents… and blood, death… this was nothing new to Martin though, the Dark Master had experienced his fair share of spilling blood over the last several years, and as such, had become accustomed to the sickly yet inviting smell. His dark eyes remained fixed on the cave entrance, watching it with a sense of anxiety, and yet also anticipation, dim excitement. Here was a possible chance of gaining information on how to bring about Raistlin’s end, an end Martin looked ever forward to, for it meant so much more for him than the simple gratitude of the world and being labelled a ‘Champion’. No… much more. He had been promised many things when that end came, things he was not willing to let slip through his fingers just yet, and no being, not even a God such as Majere was going to stop him from achieving his goal.

The very air did seem to burn as David was ravaged time and again by the unseen forces pitted against his very mind and soul. A dark and chilling laughter, more frightening than the demons within him sounded within the recesses of his thoughts. Raistlin laughed coldly at the sight of the Mortal trying to resist his sway, however, irritation and admiration did sparkle in the once mortal mage, now God of Darkness, for this David, Heather’s spouse and father to Serenity, had not yet broken and succumb to the power of the Hour Glass Immortal. His stubbornness and iron will appealed to Raistlin, for he would make a more formidable Avatar than he had originally anticipated previously.

Fight all you wish, David. You will break in time, and within this realm of mine, all we have is ‘time’, for I control all that passes here, and not even time is outwith my control. I was once known as the Master of Past and Present… now the future will be mine also, in name and right!

David simply moaned, for he could hardly form words, but Raistlin needed not hear his voice, as images and thoughts could be read so much easier.

In time, David, in time… you will see them soon enough…

Heather stood then, holding Reni's hand. "alright then... I guess we had better be moving on... Hannah, you want to get the horses? I'll get the tack ready and Reni can help get the wagon ready.

Wagon was exactly what Heather meant too, it was very similar in every way to the old covered wagons the pioneers used when moving westward in this country. the cloth that covered the wagon was old and patched. The harnesses were ready to go, all they had to do was lead the two horses Heather kept for that purpose to the wagon and buckle them in. Heather had three more in a corral behind her small home. She whistled and a dog, a german shepard trotted out of the open door of the house.

She looked to Kirin, and scratched the little dragon under it's chin. "you want to go open the gate for Kano?" She asked, and the dragon nodded once, sharply... and then scurried over to the gate, climbing to the top and using its dexterous claws to undo the latch, as the large dog shouldered the gate open.

Kano barked twice then proceeded to round up the two saddle horses that were kept there, a dun mare, and a chestnut stallion. They came quickly, lead by the dog as if they had done this all their lives.

He still stood outside the entrance, waiting for the others, however, patience had never been a virtue of his, mind you, Martin had so few of those these days there seemed little point in dwelling on that one. Sighing, Martin withdrew something from his pocket and gazed longingly at it.... but replaced it..... a look of irritation then crossing his brow. " So long..... yet still not enough..... "

Hannah walked over and ran her hand over each mane, smiling, "You always were one to take great care of your animals, Heather," She chuckled to herself, "So..who's travelling where? Ya' gonna lead the horses or you want me too? Or what? ...what's your plan here?"

Laura looked at the wagon and raised a brow.
"Are we supposed to travel in this?! Most of us can use some magic, why can't we just teleport to the place where this dragon queen lives? It could be fun, no doubt about that, but as far as I know we don't have any time to waste.."

Heather looked back at Laura, and shook her head. "From what little I can understand from Kirin, this dragon queen is not far from here, barely half a day's ride. Would you have us use our magics and exhaust ourselves before we have a chance to see if this queen will be hostile to our presence? If you wish to go on ahead without us, go ahead...but I cannot guarentee what this dragon queen would do.... and I doubt you would survive such an encounter alone..."

Heather wasn't normally so cold to people, but she was still somewhat in shock, her hands trembled as she bridled the stallion... Knowing how cruel fate could be, she shivered inwardly as she thought of her husband, and of her only child... and how easily they could be taken from her.

"Very well. You could have said that the place was so close. I thought we were going to travel for days or maybe weeks. And I may be impatient, but I am not stupid. Are we ready to leave?"

While the others discussed the travel plans, Carolyn stayed quiet, looking at the wagon they were to travel in. It did indeed look much like the old covered wagons that she had read about in some books. Like Laura, Carolyn had initally thought the location of their destination was farther than it was and had wondered about using their magic to get there. However, Heather's eplantion about using the wagon instead made more then enough sense to the quiet young woman. Better to reserve their powers if they were heading into a hostile situation.

Carolyn stood up and walked over to the wagon, smiling at the two beautiful horses, ready to go whenever it was time.

Erica too had slipped into the background, as usual... She still hadn't mastered being around people well, even after all the years of friendship with this group, she still felt awkward sometimes, like right now. There wasn't anything she could do to help; sure she'd learned to ride a horse, but everyone could do that, and if it would only take them a short time to get there by horse, then magic would only be wasted, so there she could not help. It was times like these that she wished that things were like they were before that hourglass had appeared in the sky, but she knew that they could not be... and given all that she had gained since then, she wasn't sure she would change things too terribly much... to have magic was something she'd wished, dreamed, and hoped for before Raistlin's coming to their world, and now it was a part of her, and she did not want to give it up, ever.

A flash of the last time she'd seen her family played across her mind, and she blinked back tears that welled up in her eyes. Her mother had not known what to do when she saw her daughter; magic was just too much for her. Of course Bobby, her little brother, had thought it cool, but he was also frightened. And then there was her father... he thought things through so logically that it just didn't seem to compute for him. Shortly thereafter they had all disappeared. Erica assumed that the black dragon who had begun to rule over her part of New York might have eaten or killed them, but she didn't know for sure.

She blinked again and sighed heavily, the lump in her throat easing as she forced herself to think of other things. Seeing the two horses, she went over to them and Hannah. "Here," she said softly, "let me help you out with rigging them up."

…Dean watched the women as they began to get the horses and wagon ready for the journey, he couldn’t hold back the half-smile that flitted to his lips as he turned and head to the trees where amongst the boughs almost a hundred meters his own stock-horse grazed upon the grass of a clearing. His thoughts were upon those in the clearing, they had all changed so much over the last five years, the events of the war had tempered their will like fine steel in a smith’s forge. He gathered that War and Loss did that to people, but he was gladdened by the fact they all seemed strong of spirit.

He strode between the trees, letting the dappling light play across him, his hand resting upon the hilt of his blade as he strode between them. He clucked softly as he entered the clearing and ran a tanned hand over the mane of his bay gelding, it nuzzled him heavily and caused him to chuckle as he stumbled before grasping the saddle pommel and swinging himself into the saddle with an ease that came from traveling the past 5 years. He guided his horse back through the trees towards the others, his knees resting against the rifle holstered to the left of the saddle, an old Winchester rifle with only a scarce few rounds left. He secretly hoped they would be enough.

He emerged from the tree-line and into the clearing by the wagon, glancing left and right with his clear blue eyes and smiling to Laura his good natured, lop-sided grin that he wore very seldom these days. His soul felt somehow eased by the company of his friends, like a weight had been lifted from his chest, he felt strangely free like he felt when he was alone on the trail with the sun rising in the distance and the events of the new world and the Last War but a distant memory…

(Moving on)

It was now nearing sunset, and the group had traveled nearly all the distance needed to reach what Kirin called the "dragon Queen" During these past five years, Heather had honed her skills that an old friend had taught her. The Katana he had given her was strapped against her back, and there wasn't a pocket that didn't have a knife of one kind or another in it...

Reining in the pair of draft horses, sturdy cream colored Belgians. The elder of the two, tossed his head and stamped one iron shod hoof. She turned halfway in her seat to check her daughter who was playing with Kirin in the back of the wagon, hiding amung the belongings of the group. Then she looked to the rest.

"Well? Do we press on? Or wait till morning?" She asked anxiously.

…the blonde man stared into the deepening gloom of the evening, the warm breeze stirring his ragged blonde hair and he swung his head slowly from side to side searching and listening for signs of anything that seemed out of place. After a few moments he nodded to himself and turned in the saddle to look to Heather, his expression serious and his face half lost to the twilight of shadow.

“I agree too, there is just too much out there that can see in the darkness now where most of us can’t.” he said simply before raising his head to the canopy above them and scanning the branches that surrounded where they had stopped. “I’ll take the first watch then, I’ll sit up in that tree over there, should give me a decent enough view if anything comes sniffing around tonight.” The man added as he swung a leg over the saddle and lowered himself to the ground, raising his arms above his head and stretching the soreness of the day’s ride from his back.

Dean gingerly touched a hand to his temple, behind his eyes he felt the first minor pangs of a headache, and glanced over to his saddlebags where he kept his precious few painkillers, deciding to leave it for now, hoping that the pain would dissipate in time without the need for drugs. He ran a hand through his hair and looked to the others as he began unbuckling his geldings girth strap so he could remove the saddle…

Laura got off the wagon and brushed lazily her dress and cloak. She hadn't got used to those primitive transport means yet. Well, she hadn't got used to driving a car, when there were cars, either. She had learned to teleport and that was how she usually travelled, even if she enjoyed a walk once in a while.

She noticed Dean touch his temple and raised a brow a little concerned, but she didn't say anything knowing how stubborn the man could be. She thought she could make him a herbal tea that could help his headache.
"Why don't we start a fire and boil some water? It would be nice with a cup of tea!"

She opened one of her pouches and found some dried leaves that she knew made a nice tasting tea that would cure headaches and give everybody a good night sleep.
"I'll take the second watch. And you'd better wake me, Dean, otherwise I'll put mudcrabs into your underwear!" she said trying to use a threatening voice, then she leaned back and waited for someone to gather some firewood.

" Tea, Laura? That how you deal with these kind of situations is it? Handy to know.... ", once more Martin stepped out of the land of shadows, with only the traces of a sneer left on his lips. If anything, the dark human was paler than usual, his hands clasped tightly together to prevent himself from shaking. " Its nice to see you all finally moved on, I was beginning to think you wouldn't. Of course.... ", he glanced to Heather. " ... I should have known better. ", there was a simper of a smile, then it vanished as he took a seat. " And there be no need for any of you to take watch... for I will... I won't be sleeping this night. You will need your rest for the days ahead, take it while you can... ", with that his gaze turned briefly to Dean, and his head nodded slowly.

With a nod to her companions, Erica sighed and walked out into the trees, her dagger out and on guard as she looked for firewood. The night was quiet, and it irked her to no end. It seemed that even the small animals that never ceased to chatter had stopped. Maybe it's Martin's presence, she mused to herself. He seems to cause that often enough.

She picked up a large log lying on the ground and stripped away the smaller branches with her dagger before hauling them back to the camp. "I dunno about y'all," she nearly whispered, "but it's a bit too quiet out there for my liking... don't even hear frogs and crickets. I think something's up, or else it's just Martin," she said with a side long glance at the man, grinning ruefully and trying to make it sound lighter than her concern really was. "Well anyways, I'm off to get more wood... give a shout if ya need me." She said with a nod before entering back into the gloom and thanking what Gods there were--Raistlin aside--that Airiana had left part of her keen vision with her when the dragoness had left.

…Dean returned Martin nod, though his blue eyes had narrowed slightly with suspicion before he turned and yanked the saddle from the back of his bay gelding, chiding himself for being overly suspicious of those he should trust with more than his life, with his soul. But then again it was Martin…

…Hearing Erica’s joke, Dean smiled as he dumped the saddle at the base of one of the trees, making sure to shoot little Reni a smile as he passed the wagon and went back to picket his horse for the evening. He had seen far too many things in this new hybrid world that spooked a horse and caused it to run, there was no way he was leaving that to chance, if something happened Dean made sure there was a way to get Reni and Heather away from here.

The Australian head back over to the saddle bags and untied his bedroll from the rear of the saddle, spreading the bag across the loamy floor of the forest, he couldn’t remember the last time he had slept in a real bed, it felt like years though more than likely it had been months. At least two, he hardly knew the difference any more he glanced over to Heather and Reni.

"Is there anything we should know about this Earth Dragon Mother thing? I mean so we don't piss her off that is? Some kind of etiquette or soemthing?" he asked suddenly, running a hand through his hair as his mind wandered over the task ahead of them. He liked t consider all of his options, doing things blindly was something he would do alone but not when his friends safety were concerned.

From where he knelt by his bedroll he looked to Martin while stifling a yawn with the back of his hand. “Is there anything we need to do?” he asked, knowing that more than likely the enigmatic and somewhat unsettling younger man would answer there was nothing. But still, it was right to ask, they were all in this together, it reminded him of the Last War and the days spent on the trail…

Laura rolled her eyes hearing Martin comment. She wasn't surprised by his sudden appearance, that was what Martin used to do. She didn't answer to the provocation and looked away.
When Erica got back with some firewood, she gave her a brief smile and cast a simple spell to light a fire. Then she walked to the wagon to find something to boil the water in and a few cups.

Whilst she was making the tea, she decided to take a little revenge over Martin. She whispered a few words of magic that made an invisible hand pinch Martin's butt. Trying not to look at him and not to laugh, she poured the tea in two cups, one for herself and one for Dean.
"There's some tea here for anyone who wants it!" she said, than she walked to Dean and handed him the cup.

"Drink, it will help your headache." Then she thought about his question about the dragon queen and shrugged. "I have no idea. Noone really knew about her existance..."
She turned to Martin and her eyes narrowed slightly.
"I will take watch with you, I wouldn't feel good knowing that our safety is in your hands"

He started as the unseen forced pinch his rear end..... turning sharply, Martin looked into the shadows behind him, then turned, seeming to smell something in the air. Fixing his eyes on Laura, he rose an eyebrow. " Funny. ", but did not rise to the bait of exacting a retaliation. Instead, he turned his apparently uninterested attention to Dean, his response already formed. " Nothi.... ", but then he stopped in mid sentence. " I spoke with some.... some people I know..... some very, very old people. ", there was no smile nor appearance of sarcastic mirth in his expression, and at the memory, he blanched, the little colour draining from his face. " I learned a few things..... one of which was your intention to seek out the Mother Earth and Dragon. Knowlege was parted to me, much of it crypted and will need thought to figure out what exactly it all means, however, from what I gleaned, She is a Primal Force, not only of Nature, but of Existence itself. Part of which holds this world and reality together. In many ways, above that of God-hood, yet still constrained by the limitations of certain mortal and immortal aspects. An enigma if ever there was one. What it very clear though, is that she is powerful. We need not have outside information to guess that much.... "

" As to addressing her, Dean.... ", Martin sighed. " I am in the 'dark' on that one. She is something far more alien to us, and yet apart of us.... contradiction in its greatest, cruelest, most beautiful form.... ", though he would not sit, to the others gathered it appeared something heavy weighed on the strange over-aged youths' shoulders. A burden he would not share, nor divulge, but one that constantly pained him greatly. " I am fast running out of sources, my Friends.... very fast.... "

Erica came back with her last armload of firewood and set it next to the fire and helped herself to a cup of tea, then found another log to sit on and watched the antics between Laura and Martin. She only watched for a few moments before she stood, shaking her head and went over to the wagon to help unload things they would be needing that night.

She pulled out her bag from the numerous ones in the wagon and spread what had once been a sleeping bag with an extra pad on the bottom equidistant from both the fire and the wagon. After doing that, she sat her bag down on top of it and hoped no one would try to steal it... it was comfortable, and the only one she wouldn't mind stealing it from her for a night would be little Reni.

…Dean took the tea gratefully with a laugh for the reference to an old joke, hoping that its herbal ingredients would help ease the dull pain behind his eyes. He took a deep sip, holding the mug between his hands for warmth and relishing the scent of the tea. He nodded to himself and smiled.

“It’s good Laura, thanks.” He said, a lop-sided grin crossed his face as he took another drink of the herbal draught and looked between Martin and Laura since he had missed the unseen pinch. He shrugged a little to himself and continued to listen as Martin spoke about the Dragon, his smile faltering as he listened and his eyes narrowing to blue slits as he thought about what was being said.

The blonde man noticed the sudden weariness of Martin as he spoke and thought of asking about what he was doing, that perhaps he should take things a little easier. The gods alone knew what Martin consorted with in the Shadows, then again perhaps even the gods themselves didn’t want to know. Dean knew what Martin’s response would be though and he decided against cheapening the youth’s sacrifices by such a statement. Instead he merely nodded abruptly.

“At least that gives me a little to go on.” He said taking another drink of the tea and stifling a yawn. Dean leaned back against his saddle that rested against one of the tree trunks a little away from the fire thinking about the days ahead and as always of the past…

"Either way, I'll be up in a tree somewhere, being a treehugging elf wannabe. Just call if you need me, m'kay?"

She knew very well that those were dangerous times and that they had a difficult task ahead of them, but it still disheartened her somehow. Listening to everyone talk, Carolyn sighed tiredly. It had been a long day and much had happened. The travel in the wagon overland had been interesting, albeit a bit hard on her. She wasn't used to travelling in such ways anymore, prefering to travel through the elements or fly in the form of a bird. Her body ached slightly in various places, as much from the travel then the stresses of the day.

Finding a place to sit down close to the fire, the young woman grabbed a blanket from the wagon before sitting down with a cup of Laura's herbal tea. She sipped it slowly. It warmed her from the inside out, helping to soothe her frayed nerves.

Heather stood brushing down the stallion, as he leaned into her brush-strokes with obvious pleasure. She noticed Reni by Martin, the little girl curled up with her head resting on his knee, the German Shephard, Kano had his head resting in Reni's lap, it made quite a picture.

Heather smiled... though Martin practiced the magics opposite of hers, they remained good friends, and Reni adored him. fastening the feed bag around the Stallion's head, she joined the others.

Kirin squaked and darted to her, and settled on her shoulders once again. The little dragon's chittering "talk" made her smile and she scratched its chin.

IC: Martin's lips turned in a faint smile, the lines of his face softened as he rested his hand on the child's shoulder. His thoughts turned down strange roads and sharp corners as he stared at the sleeping child. It was so unfair for all this, the hope of everyone to rest on such a small pair of shoulders.

Heather saw the smile play on Martin's lips, and turned away before he could see that she had seen. Suddenly, one of the horses made a startled snort, then the dog's head came up, muzzle wrinkled, baring its sharp fangs. Heather turned in the direction that the dog was facing....

In the darkness of the forest that surrounded them, four pairs of glowing green eyes appeared. They looked exactly like the creatures she had once seen in an old AD&D book... THe puma-like creatures had six legs, one front pair, and two hind pair. Its claws and fangs looked wickedly sharp, two tentacles that extended from it's shoulders had wicked barbs on them, and had a paralyzing effect.

If these were anything like what she remembered from the book, they worked in a pack, and had the ability to displace themselves into another dimension, and would reappear to attack from behind. Only Semi-intelligent, they would attack and kill anything that came their way.

Before Heather could call out a warning, the first lept for her....

Hannah cursed and jumped down from her tree, the creatures getting her attention only now. Displacer beasts, nasty things indeed. SHe couldn't believe she'd slacked off so badly as to ignore such dangerous things.

The displacer beast halted in mid-leap, skidding to a halt, turning its glowing green eyes onto Hannah. It snarled, a large male, judging by its size. the male certainly "heard" her, but he didn't seem to be entirely inclined to listen. Makeing an odd sound between a cackel and a purr, it dissapeared, or displaced rather.

Appearing behind Hannah, the large male lept for her, claws extended. The beast never got a chance to reach her, as Kano lept from Hannah's right, the large dog snarling and snapping its jaws at the larger animal, as the other three beasts spread out each snarling in that odd cackle-purr sound....their eyes glowing a sickley green.....

Erica turned in time to hear Hannah's voice utter a snarl that could only be the language of some animal... by the time she turned fully around, the creature had uttered its own strange sound and was behind Hannah. Kano leapt for that one, but there were three others that seemed to appear from nowhere.

Erica hissed--a habit from her time sharing a body with Airiana--as she summoned up the power of fire within her, drawing the rune that signified it in the air and pointed towards one of the panther-creatures. As she did so, a small flame trickled from her fingers to the creature, and as it grew closer to it, the flames intensified. "I don't know what you are," she nearly growled, "but you will not harm my friends!" She exclaimed, pulling out the bejewled dagger that never left her side.

Spirits of the earth...guide me... She thought, running towards a gab in the beast's formation, then scampering back into a tree. She peered down at them from a branch. "Sarin! Go claw at them!" Wrapped in her blanket Laura was reading her book, when she felt the hair on the back of her neck raise. Feeling uneasy she raised her head and noticed four pairs of green eyes flashing in the darkness. Alarmed she sprang to her feet and her eyes widened when she realized that the eyes belonged to four puma-like creatures.

She started rummaging in her bag searching for some spell components that could be used in the situation, whilst her mind found the words of an appropriate spell that wouldn't harm any of her friends. She opened a small bottle and poured the liquid over the ground, whilst she chanted a few magical words. Her right arm lenghtened and transformed into an acid lash that she swept back and forth and used to hit one of the creatures that surrounded Hannah.

The acid of the lash started corroding the fur and the flesh of the creature and filled the air with a strong unpleasant smell. Laura's arm got back to normal and she hoped that the spell had been strong enough to kill the creature that was now thrashing about on the ground in pain. She leaned back against the tree trying to catch her breath, the casting had been demanding and she felt exhausted.

Having leaned back against the tree she had been sitting against, Carolyn was almost asleep when she heard the commotion of the puma creatures. Eyes snapping back open, she was on her feet in an instant, surveying the situation. Two of the four creatures seemed to have been dealt with: one by Erica's flames, the other by Laura's acid.

The young woman was trying to figure out how to help hher friends when one of the puma-like creatures saw her, momentarily turning from Hannah. It leapt for her, snarling viciously. From her place still next to the tree, Carolyn's body shimmered silver as she sunk into the ground. She came above ground behind the animal, causing it to look around for a few seconds in confusion. Finally it turned around, seeing her, and lashed out.

Her body shimmerd again as she seemed to go transparent, her body losing all physical form. The attack of the puma phased right through her mid-section, causing the animal to snarl again in anger. It backed up a pace, seemingly trying to figure out how to handle it's foe.

That few seconds was all Care needed. She allowed herself to go solid again as she bent down to touch the ground. Muttering a few words in the spidery words of magic, the earth glowed a greenish color around the Puma. As the animal looked around itself warily, spiked vines sprung out of the ground all around it. Within seconds the creatures was pinned to the ground within the trap.

His rare pleasent thought was interupted. And Martin disliked being interupted when such a precious thing entered his mind. In less than a heart beat, he had risen from his seated position, yet had not seemed to disturb Reni's own position. There was a cold fury in his eyes as he regarded the Creatures with a cruel and quietly seething expression, a single word sprouted from his mouth, causing those within earshot to experience an odd but mild sensation of pain. The night exploded in a wrath of thunder and shadow, Martin's arm danced, moving in gestures that seemed to require an extra set of joints to perform. Power cascaded and rolled from his fingers, slamming into one of the beasts, thowing it wildly through the air, to impact with a tree, the trunk of which shattered.

However the Beast merely snarled, glinting in his direction, obviously pained by the magic. Cloud and shadow formed around Martin, emitting its own pealing thunder, it was a darkness deeper than the night surrounding him. He waited for it to lunge, his gaze darting around the group and to Reni, assessing their own injuries and current predicaments.

With her thoughts gathered and only one of the puma-like creatures left, Hannah grabbed a branch and pulled it off. SHe jumped down from the tree and hedl the ironbranch up to the creature, "Come on..try and hit me." she dared it with a smirk.

((Gotta control ya again D_M))

IC: The final beast snarled and whirled away from Hannah, to face the most unlikely of opponants.

"Reni!!" Heather screamed. She tried to herach her daughter but Martin held her back.

"Wait..." He hissed in her ear, the urgency in that single word was enough to make Heather stop cold, though Martin's grip on her arms didn't lessen.

The Displacer snarled, tail lashing with quick jerky motions. A tentacle lashed out, and seemed to strike at an invisible sheild that visibly sparked with energy and power. The beast snarled again, knowing that this human child was the only thing standing between it and freedom. Repeatedly its tentacles snaked out, the wicked barbs gleaming; only to be thwarted again and again by the sheild that surrounded Reni.

Finally the Beast let out a frustrated cry, the odd cackle-purr resonating deeply. Its claws dug deep furrows in the earth. Hissing with hatred, it lunged at Reni.

"NO!!" Came Heather's cry as she was yet again restrained by Martin. his grip was quite painful now. Tears plainly stood out in her eyes as she swore and cursed at Martin, but his strength was too much for her. Reni's eyes were locked onto the Displacer, not in the least bit concerned. Her grey-green eyes narrowed as it slammed into the shield.

Heather got the impression of that sheild... no- it was something else. That prizmatic aura that surrounded her child shifted. Almost as if it had a life of its' own. It twisted and then ensnared the Displacer beast.

The creature screeched and squealed in rage and pain. Its howls were so loud that Heather winced from the intensity. Faint snapping sounds could be heard under the tormented howls. When it finally silenced and it dropped to the ground, every bone in its body seemed to be broken. Its glowing green eyes were fixed unseeingly at the sky above it.

In shock, Heather stared, first at the dead creature, and then uncomprehendingly at her daughter... she didn't even notice that Martin had released her, and was now standing beside her.

Erica had just watched the creature she'd been fighting writhe in pain from the flames when she noticed that there was only one of the beasts left. Everyone seemed to be standing a bit back, and after looking at it, she knew why. Reni. The little girl had some sort of shield around her, and then moments later... that shield had killed the creature! The young woman stared in shock and horror at the little girl and the now lifeless form of the creature that had attacked Reni.

She tried to speak, but was unable. Her voice just would not come... and that was relatively new... Erica didn't speak often, but when she did she had absolutely no trouble.

The creature that had attacked Carolyn having been taken care of, the young woman had turned her attention to the battle with the last creature. She stared in shock as Reni looked so unconcerned by the attack, some sort of sheild going up around the little girl. However, Carolyn's amazement only grew further as she saw that the shield...somehow...had attacked and killed the strange creature.

There were no words for how surprised everyone seemed to be. Erica was silent, as if she couldn't even find the words to express what they had just witnessed. Even Heather semmed surprised by her daughters power, staring at both the dead beat and then at Reni herself. For her part, all Carolyn could do was look from one person to the other, hoping someone could offer an explanation.

He had released his grip on Heather, watching with a smug satisfaction at Reni's swift ending of the Beast. Heather would no doubt vent her rage after she had calmed down, but it mattered little to him at present. He wouldn't have endangered Reni if he had no clue as to what her power might have entailed. Moving his gaze from Reni, he gestured towards her, his eyes on her Mother. " See..... quite the power-pack, don't ya think? ", he smiled lightly.

Hannah blinked. Just blinked. Her stick-sword dropped to the ground. She had nothing to say. This was quite an occasion. Laura had followed the scene with widened eyes. She knew that Reni had powers, but she wouldn't have thought she could destroy the displacer beast so easily. She nodded with a small smile on her lips wondering how fast the little girl could learn to control her powers and how much she already knew.

((wonders where dean went....?))

IC: Reni blinked twice, her grey-green eyes clearing and they focused on her mother... she then looked at the dead form of the displacer, and her eyes widened... "Mommy??" the child cried softly, the fear and confusion in that single word was enough to break Heather's breif stupor.

Without saying a word to anyone, or even looking at any of them, she crossed the clearing to pick up her daughter.... the moment Reni's cheek touched Heather's shoulder the girl began to cry, her sobs unusually loud in the silence......

Carolyn watched on as Reni, held by her mother, cried. The sound nearly broke the woman's heart, though she knew there would be no other comfort for her than Heather's. Feeling awkward and strangely on edge, she just leaned against the tree in silence. It had been an eventful night, and Carolyn's mind couldn't help but wonder what was to happen next...

…Dean lowered the Winchester rifle, his breathing was labored and things had been too close for him to take a shot without fear of hitting one of the others, but despite the gnawing pit of fear and helplessness that twisted in his stomach, he knew his friends were more than capable of handling themselves. His thumb eased the hammer on the rifle to the uncocked position with an audible click that seemed louder in the stunned silence of the clearing.

After a few moments Dean cleared his throat and ran a hand through his hair as he looked amongst the others in the clearing, lowering the rifle to hold it in he off hand.

“Errr…I take that isn’t quite normal Heather? I mean I know I haven’t been around for a few years but I get the feeling Reni hasn’t done that before I take it?” he asked, his voice breaking the silence as he scanned the darkness of the trees for and other signs of the puma-like beasts.

“Perhaps it might be an idea if Hannah and I both head out and take a look if there are anymore of those damn things out there.” He said, still scanning the tree-line with his blue eyes now shrouded in the darkness of shadow. He looked to the others before taking a long legged step toward the trees…

Heather heard Dean's question, but it was everything she could do from breaking out into heart-rending sobs herself. She held Reni close, kneeling in the dirt, Kirin and Kano huddled close, the dragonet curled around her shoulders, as it made a soft thrumming sound in his throat... The dog leaned against her side, licking her arm.

No this wasn't 'normal' but then nothing was exactly normal for her child... she still wondered what that aura was... it didn't seem to be truely a part of Reni... in fact it seemed more like another creature all together, yet connected with Reni in every way...

She looked up to Martin, wondering if just maybe he might have an answer.

Hannah rolled her eyes at Dean's comment...the man could have at least not been so blunt about it...even SHE didn't have that kind of nerve..but that she kept to herself.

"Sounds like a plan, Dean-bean..." She said, her voice lacking it's usual wit and the words sounded hollow as she was still a bit startled from Reni's magic and now the sobbing was kind of killing her sarcasm...She hopped into a tree and scrambled onto the branches, looking down at Dean as the two of them headed out.

Laura rubbed her forehead and smirked feeling uneasy. She couldn't stand other people's pain and tears, because they always made her cry. And that was not the right moment to be emotional.

No little one, you are not alone. The Power is strong, it is frightening, but you can control it, better than any of these others could.... better than me..... be loved, be wanted, be Human. , some part of the child would hear his words, though she may not know from where they came.

Erica looked at Heather and Serenity sadly, feeling their pain and fright in waves. She wanted to comfort them both, but realized that this was a very private moment, and so simply sent the feelings of love and reassurance to them.

Instead she turned her attention to the remains of the body. They would have to be disposed of, and she decided to take charge on that front. She first gathered up the one Reni had killed, feeling a prickle of energy up her spine as she touched it. She used a lot of power to kill this thing, Erica thought, grimacing as she took hold of the creature's back legs again and drug him across the clearing. And it shocked her as much as everyone else... if I didn't know it already I would have been able to tell that the child was destined for greatness from this night alone...

Feeling at a loss and awkward in the wake of Heather and Reni's pain, Carolyn straightened up when she saw Erica begin to dispose of the animal remains. Going over to one of the other bodies and dragging it out of the clearing as Erica had done, Care felt slightly calmer. It helped her to be doing something constructive.

Wrinkling her nose in at the disgusting smell of the dead creatures, she started with the one she had pinned down earlier. It had soon died in her magical spike trap, and the smell was enough to turn the girl's stomache. Using the long dagger she always carried hidden in her boot, she cut the vines that bound the creature to the gound. After replacing her dagger to its sheath, she grabbed the animal by its back legs and moved it out of the clearing. Once it was far enough away, she set to burying the remains deep, as to keep the scent of blood from drawing any other wildlife.

Erica sighed as she drug the body far enough in the forest for burial and dug up a crude, shallow grave for the creature. When she'd covered it, she piled rocks on top to keep animals from digging it up. Once she had completed this task, she moved back to the group, and found the mostly-charred remains of the creature she had killed.

The smell almost knocked her over when she reached it. Gods, she thought to herself, had I known the little beasties smelt so bad fried I would have used another spell! Not wanting to touch the body itself, she looked around for something to carry it with. Finding that just about everything was vital, she sighed and looked down at herself. The bottom of her shirt had a small tear, and with a little bit of effort, she could probably rip a piece of it free. Of course, this meant partially destroying one of the only shirts she had left, but between the two choices of touching the animal with her bare hands or ruining her shirt, she chose the latter.

Without another thought, she forced the fabric apart and was soon rewards with the ripping sound of the cloth. She ripped away one large piece and split it with her dagger, wrapping one around each hand. After her preparations were done, Erica finally drug the dead creature out of the clearing and near where she had buried the other. She noticed that Carolyn was doing the same and nodded to her in satisfaction. At least this gets our minds off of other things, she thought absently as she set about digging another shallow grave.

…Deam walked though the darkened trees his eyes narrowed, twin pools of darkness on a face that was barley illuminated by moonlight which struggled to penetrate the ebon canopy of the branches overhead.

In his weathered hands, he held the old Winchester rifle, within it chamber the last five of his precious rifle rounds snug within. He eased the loading lever and cocked a round into the breach, painfully aware of the loudness of the metallic clicks in the darkness surrounding him.

Wouldn’t be able to even see one of these bloody things even if it was a few feet in front of me

He stopped and crouched on his haunches cocking his head slightly and listening to the sounds of the woods around him, behind him the camp where his companions dragged the bodies was little more than a pinprick of light suspended in the darkness.

Nothing

Dean sighed and then stifled a yawn before standing, he ran a hand through his hair and closed his eyes to feel the night’s breeze upon the bare skin of his cheeks and forehead. He wondered what tomorrow morning would bring, his thoughts and memories cascading back to a time where Raistlin was little more than a character in a faded novel that he thought was kind of cool. "What cha thinking about, Deany?" Hannah asked as she dropped from a branch a few feet from him. Her wit had obviously returned as had her grin, and she clearly had no trouble seeing in the natural darkness. That might of course been becuase there was an owl resting on her head...it would have been difficult to say wether she was seeing or doing some magical thign to see through the owl's eyes. Regardless, she glanced at Dean and then looked foward.

A shredding noise came from behind, and she turned. Apparently, her shirt had gotten caught on a branch and was now missing a very large portion. She cursed under her breath and shrugged, walking next to Dean.

Carolyn returned Erica's nod as she finished digging the grave for the creature that had been touched by Laura's acid attack. Rolling the remains into the hole and covering it over, she sat back on her heels with a slight yawn. She dragged the back of her hand across her forehead, leaving a streak of dirt, trying to remember if all the creatures were now buried.

I think there were only four of them. Erica's buried two, as have I...

Standing up again, she did a scan of the area anyway. Finding no more more remains, or anything else for that matter, she gave a long stretch. It may have been a long, emotional day, but it still felt good to be out and busy. It had been a long time since the young woman had felt of use to anyone or anything. Lifting her face to the sky, Carolyn closed her eyes with a sigh as she let the cool air brush over her skin and through her hair, as she listened in the distance to where Dean and Hannah were still scouting.

Dean walked in silence for a few moments as he considered Hannah’s question, chewing his lip in thought as he walked through the darkness, his eyes narrowed as he peered into the darkness and listened to Hannah’s question.

“Was just thinking about before…before the War…back when everything made sense.” He said quietly, his thoughts wandering once again to his friends and family, their fate unknown on a continent so far away.

“Doesn’t matter Hannah, no use dwelling on the what was, focus on the what is.” he said, the corner of his smile turning upwards in a reassuring smile that didn’t seem to reach his blue eyes lost in the darkness.

“So tell me kiddo, did you learn any new cheers when I was away?” he said, a little chuckle escaping his lips as he suddenly stepped aside out of swatting reach…

And you and I are most certainly not normal people, considering the fact that we would sit for hours and type up things playing other people in a previously fictual world instead of going to the mall or watching TV or something. Or sleeping, for that matter...." She shrugged, then gave Dean a wierd look, "Cheers? Dean," She smirked and said rather flatly, "I'm an elf minus the ears. I live in a tree. I talk to animals. I eat berries and spring water." Chuckling, Hannah continued, "Why would I have made up cheers for my squirrel buddies and berry bushes? Who would have thought, huh? Sitting on a computer seven hours a day to living in a tree......it's insane...but hey, if you try and look and things that make sense..you'll go insane...but, you know, whatever.." she rambled on then quieted down, walking next to Dean and fiddling with her ripped shirt.

He turned his head slowly from left to right searching the almost pitch black for anything that seemed out of place but knew if another displacer beast lurked out there, it would be well on them before he could see it.

“And would you say you are happier now or then Hannah?” he said suddenly but quietly a solemn voice in the darkness, and he stopped and then stifled a yawn with the back of his palm.

“Perhaps we should be getting back, I think we have trawled enough fresh meat through the forest to at least tempt another of those beasts to take a bite.” He added, giving the forest one last suspicious look before turning on his heel and making for the pin prick of light that marked the campfire.

“You coming? I mean a fire is a lot more comfortable then a tree.” He said and then chuckled to himself before looking to Hannah again, his eyes trailing to where the owl was perched.

“Oh and one other thing...ahhh...I don't know exactly how to state this but...errr...you do realize you had a bird perched on your head right?” he laughed, the noise sounding overly loud amongst the black stillness of the night…

When she had finished burying the last of the cat-like creatures, Erica sighed. It was then that weariness set in on her. It had been a long day, and the toll of casting her spell on top of the effort required for dragging the heavy creatures and digging their graves had settled on her shoulders in such a way that it required sleep, and near immediately.

She took the cloth wrappings from her hand as she walked back to the group, throwing the now-useless shreds of cloth in the fire. She went to her sleeping bag and sat down on the once-comfy bedroll, pulling her bag towards her and taking out a hairbrush that she’d had for close to a decade.

The poor brush had seen better days. She turned the red plastic hairbrush over and rubbed the scratched back almost lovingly, remembering the reason for the deep furrows there. Silly cat, she mused, why he ever though of my brush as a chew-toy I will never know! She turned it back over and ran the bristles through her short-shorn hair, getting out any tangles that had found their way there.

With a sigh, she pulled out a canteen of water and a small bar of soap—Which has almost dwindled down to nothing, she realized with a brief grimace—and used it to wash her face and hands, saving some of the water to brush her teeth with. Once she had finished her little ritual, she packed up these things again in her knapsack and laid it beside her sleeping bag and laid out on it, not fully needed the warmth it would provide later just yet. She faced the fire, staring into its flames, seeming to be thinking of everything but nothing at the same time as she unblinkingly zoned at the warmth and changing color of the fire.

Laura walked away from the camp, as she needed a little time on her own to muse on the latest events. Even if she seemed perfectly in control, she was a little shaken because of the unexpected attack.

She followed a narrow path and reached a small stream. She washed her face with the cold water and then sat down by a tree. She started playing with some small rocks trying to relax, but her thoughts kept going back to Reni and her powers, and to her friends. They had all changed so much, they were nothing but strangers, there was not much left of the people she had shared so much with.

Sighing sadly she rested her head on her knees and gave in to exhaustion. Her sleep was troubled by nightmares about Raistlin and, when she woke up in the middle of the night, she was bathed in sweat and the hourglass between her eyes was throbbing.

She rubbed her eyes and looked around trying to remember where she was. Shaking her head she got to her feet and started walking back to the camp. The night was full of sounds and strange noises. Feeling uneasy Laura quickened her pace.

As time passed, Martin simply stood stone still, wrapped in shadow and equally dark thoughts. Much had to be explained, but now was not the time. First the Dragon had to be consulted, and from there they could plan their next move, for now though, it seemed to be a stand-off. He had little doubt that Rasitlin had a part to play in the attack from the Displacer Beasts, perhaps serving as a mere test, and to be sure, the Master of Past and Present would send something bigger next time.

Glancing to Heather, Martin stirred, easing the cramp he had gained in his right leg. Words whispered on the wind, amounst the trees and within the darkness, but nothing could he understand of them, one thing was clear, that Death hung ever close them. It rancid, bittersweet stench floated on the waves of existence and terror.

Her eyes closed and lifted to the sky, Carolyn's state of meditation was broken by footsteps heading back to camp. Opening her eyes, she smiled inwardly as she shook off the dazed feeling her medations always left upon coming out of the relaxed state. Standing up, she brushed the extra dirt of the Displacer graves from her jeans and followed Erica back to camp.

Kneeling on her blanket, she started to go through the backpack she always carried with her these days. She pulled from it a waterskin - canteen, she reminded herself with a shake of her head - and tested how much water it had it. Seemly satisfied with her answer, she used some of it to wash the remaining dirt and smell of the now-buried creatures. She had forgotten to pack more soap before arriving at Heather's earlier, but was relieved to find she still had a bottle of the herbal conconction that would do just as well. Her knowledge of herbalism had come in handy once again, it seemed.

Once clean again, she corked the canteen and put it back in her travel-worn backpack, along with the bottle of washing liquid. Taking an old brush from the pack, she removed the ties from the braid that hung down her back. Once loose, she began brushing as many of the tats as possible from her waist-length dark hair before twisting it into another braid to keep it from falling in her face.

With a weary yawn, Carolyn put her brush back in her bag and stretched. Closing the flap on the backpack and setting it aside, she layed down as comfortable as possible, wrapping herself in the warmth of the blanket. Closing her eyes, she let the sounds of the forest lull her into sleep.

The dawn rose with a majestic preamble... the hues of red and violet that graced the gathering clouds was a brilliant sight to behold. Too bad it predicted rain before noon. Heather sighed as she climbed up into the wagon, Reni beside her.

This was it... Kirin told her that the location they sought would be reached within the hour, and Heather couldn't help but tremble in anticipation of this encounter.

She glanced at her friends, and smiled... they were still there with her... she couldn't help but feel overwhelmed at times at this constant show of companionship... throughout most of her life she was the loner, and most people were content to leave her as such. Due to such she had become a creature of habit... but she was thankful for their continued comradie.

The time streached by as the sun slowly rose into the steadily increasing clouds.... by the time the clouds had completely hidden the sun, and the first fat drops of rain began to fall, Kirin let out a screeching cry, alerting the rest that they had found their destination....

Heather stared down at the Valley below them and the crystal-clear river that ran through it. The River ended abruptly at the far eastern end of the Valley, dissapearing into a huge cavern. The river, Heather saw, sparkled dully with silver and gold...obviously strewn along its bottom. She looked back to the cavern again, and shivered... for such a home, she wondered just how big this Queen of dragons could possibly be.

The next morning found Carolyn refreshed and ready to travel on. Sleeping by the fire, surrounded by her friends had been very soothing for the young woman and her rest had been peaceful. She had dreamt again, but instead of the horrific images of the dragons who had taken over her former home of nothern Ontario and killed many people, including her own family, her dreams had been filled with possible outcomes with their meeting with the Queen of Dragons. Though she knew that the number of negative outcomes could equal the positive, Carolyn found she was excited to move on.

After helping pack up and getting her things ready to go, she was soon on the wagon with the group. The hour ride seemed to pass quickly and soon Kirin signaled they had arrived. From her place on the wagon, Carolyn gazed down at the beautiful picture before them. The valley with the river going through it, sparkling with the Queens treasures, and a large cavern to the east. The sight was beautiful, yet intimidating at the same time.

She had taken what seemed like forever to drift off to sleep. But then, that was nothing new; it always took the young woman a while... too many things running through her head to sleep properly as soon as she put her head to the pillow... or the sleeping bag, as it were.

Once she had fallen asleep though, Erica's dreams had been filled with dragons and magic. Again, nothing unusual there, but one dream in particular called to her when she woke the next morning. She had dreamt of treasure, troves of it, and a beautiful little place that seemed full of energy, yet peaceful at the same time.

Odd... wonder why that one sticks with me? She wondered as she rolled up her sleeping bag and prepared herself for the day. By the time they'd headed on their way and the rain had started, Erica realized why the dream had stuck so forcefully with her--the dream wasn't just that, it was a premonition of sorts. The valley they entered was almost identical to the place she'd dreamed of. ...I wonder if this is a good or a bad thing?

With that thought in her mind, she moved towards Heather and told the woman of her deja-vu. "So, what do you think?" She asked pensively, looking at the beautiful valley. "I didn't get much, but this is definitely the place... can't you feel it? The air's like electricity!"

Hannah had taken the night to sleep in a tree farther away, to take watch. This had been the first time in all the years she'd taken on her elfhood that she'd fallen out. Luckily, she landed on two feet, but the bump on her head from hitting a branch on the way down wasn't going anywhere.

Cursing under her breath and rubbing her head, she joined the wagon on the ground. They walked for some time, but as the valley came into view, Hannah was abruptly amazed. She couldn't think of a single snide thing to say about. The pain from the bump in her head subsided, "woah...that's...cool...."
