The lone temple stood in the woods silent. The old man strode toward hurridly. He still couldn't believe he was late to such a ceromony. The night when a new god would rise was a holy event. Caleb, the prescious child who had come into their care, would at last gain his full power.

It was what the members of the tiny village had hoped for all the long. They had hidden away the boy and guarded him against the many dangers that had come their way. Finally, he had reached the precious age of fifteen, when the seal on his power could be reached. And Sachreis was late. Yet, as he hobled to the secret shrine, something was amiss, where were the guards?

As he made it to the entrance his heart nearly stopped. The guards at the door lay in a bloody mess. "Paladine, no."

He hurried inside and found him stopped by one of the priests who was covered in blood. "Elder, Caleb was...a thing..." the girl sobbed uncontrollebly.

He walked to the only other person who was standing, a rather burly man. "Jono, tell me what has ocurred." The old man said it in a sad, yet knowing voice.

"The ceremony was going well, when something came in. A knight on a horse. Unholy creatures they were, but they still manged to come in. It attacked whoever tried to stop it until it came upon the boy. Then...then it...beheaded him." The man seemed composed and strong, but it was evident he was about to crack.

"I see. All those years for nothing."

I know that the boy's twin is susposed to be alive somewhere, but still all those years of that boy's life wasted. Paladine, protect the other child please.

On a hill, a figure on a horse over looked the temple. It held a long axe dripping with blood. "Well, that is one more being with divine blood that shall never rise. I should feel glad but I can't help but think that I have missed something."

The Death Knight shrugged it off. He was proably exhausted from using all his energy to enter sacred grounds.

(OOC: Okay, basically the thread is centered around this thread is centered around the twin of the boy who got killed. The twin only requirment for the twin is that they are fifteen years old. Someone can either play the twin or any other character who would have a reason to be involved in this story.

I don't want to exert much control over this. I want to primarily control the one antagonist who has appeared already, the Death Knight Asharan. He has appeared in some other threads. He is a weaker type of Death Knight, who is generally a mercenary, but has some other "hobbies" as well. Any npcs can be introduced by anyone who plays.

"Leper!".

"Vile being! Throw a stone and send him on his way!".

"He has the evil eye!".

"HOLD!".

The woman broke through from the throng of the crowd and went to stand beside the boy. She looked at him. The poor soul could have been no older than fourteen or fifteen. There were tears in his eyes and he looked weak from hunger, but as far as she could see, there was no sign of leprosy on the boy.

She knew what this was. The villagers were all wary of strangers, especially since word of the desecration at the holy temple had taken root, and spread from one village to another like wild fire.

Salome placed a hand on the boy's shoulder. He shuddered a little under her touch, afraid that she, like the others- would harm him or strike him.

"You have nothing to fear from me".

The boy tentatively raised his eyes to those of the woman before him. He was greeted by the crooked grin and the blazing eyes of a Solamnic knight.

Sir Salome Lonestar, Knight of the Rose turned on the villagers with anger boiling her blood. She had been sent here to keep the peace when reports of the incident had reached the prefect of her order. As she looked at the unruly crowd, she truly wondered if they were worth it. This mission felt like nothing more than a wild goose chase. As far as she could discern, she was chasing a ghost!

"Return to your homes!", she ordered. "Or feel the wrath of my blade". It was no idle threat. One hand remained on the boy's shoulder, the other rested over the pommel of her sword.

If any of the other knights could see her now they would probably laugh at her. Lonestar had always been unconventional but today she had broken new ground. She had unwittingly become the champion of nothing more than a common street urchin!
She feared no danger, for she knew no sin.

A young dryad ran through the forest. The other creatures had warned that it was not wise to travel through the forest as long as the frightning stranger was about.

But, the dryad was young and curious. She had never seen an undead before. And even though there was a part of her that was afraid, she was of a brazen enough nature not to heed her instincts.

Besides someone had to find out what he knew of the other child. Suddenly she came upon him and stopped. Unfortunatly, he sensed her movement.

He sat on a nightmare who was a black as deepest darkness. His armor was strange, not like that of any knight who she had ever seen. A blue, rotted cape graced his shoulders. A helmet hid his face. But, she could see the eyes, pinpoints of fire.

The rider urged the horse toward her. "It has been along time since I have come upon one of the fair folk such as yourself. It makes me rember my home."

The dryad was paralyzed by fear. So much so that when the knight dismounted his horse and came towards her, she couldn't move. And by the time she was able to, he already had his metal covered hand wrapped around her slender neck.

"Is there something that you would like to tell me little one?"

"N-n-no sir!!" She cried tears streaming down her face.

"Are you sure? Nothing about humans with the blood of gods." His voice was like that of a parent who knew their child was hiding something.

"No! Go ahead and kill me. You won't find the other!" She gasped as realized what she had blurted out.

The knights fingers released her throat. He grabbed the reigns of the nightmare and began to walk away. The Dryad shook in terror.

"See, now that wasn't so hard. I thank you. I am relieved that I didn't have to hurt you." And with those words the knight was gone."There is no greater joy than to be reborn with every heartbeat." Belldandy.

"Well" asked the knight impatiently. "Have you lost your tongue?”

A movement in the corner of her eye distracted her attention. Salome tensed as she saw two of her cohort walk into the filthy tavern. The knights nodded when they sighted her, their expressions revealing their puzzlement at the greedy urchin by her side.

“Lonestar” they said in way of greeting, before taking a seat at the table. Salome’s smile was guarded.

“Calderas” she said. “Merrick”. Sir Jared Calderas and Sir Walter Merrick. She had served with the two often before but there were no ties of friendship there. They still resented her sex and her superior skill with a blade. They ordered mead and waited for Salome to explain the boy’s presence.

“What news do you bring?” she asked the two knights. They had been conducting their own inquiries but they were able to add little more to what she already knew herself.

“We are chasing a phantom,” Calderas said angrily. Merrick nodded his assent.
“Old wife’s tales and witch stories”, the knight shook his head. “Give me a foe of flesh of blood I can run my sword through,” he said.
“Yes” said Calderas, “and then we can be away from this accursed countryside once and for all”.

Salome knew how they felt. She felt the same herself. They were knights. They should be at the chapter house, preparing for a possible siege on Palanthus from the Neraka with the rest of their comrades, not chasing ghosts in the wilderness.

Tage Iphilkur had been listening in on the knights as soon as he had heard the clanking of amor and the rattling swords. The half elf smiled as he sipped his wine. Turning towards the voices, he said,

"Wife's tales? Witch stories? Sirs and madam, there is nothing faulty about the existance of a death knight. Your order would have fallen far long ago during the Blue Lady's War if not for magical help Dalamar the Dark provided Tanthalas Solostaran Half-Elven."

"Who're you?" asked one of the men.

"Are you Sir Calderas or Sir Merrick?" There was a pause. They had not realized Tage had kept his eyes closed.

"Are you blind?" asked the woman.

"No, madam, but another ailment makes me keep my eyes closed."

"Again, who are you?"

"Dear sirs, I am Tage Iphilkur, a lowly cleric of Paladine. I was one of the survivors of the slaughter. And the evil that radiated from that creature went past even these unseeing eyes."

Introductions passed and Tage nodded.

"I did not think they would send knights of the Rose for such a matter, though. It is, perhaps, more grievious than I thought."

He stood up and reached for a solid steel quarterstaff at his side. Feeling his to the table, he found an empty seat and sat down. A dark figure followed him and went under the table.

"Do not be alarmed, sirs. That is Isilme, my guide. A black fox and a fallen friend's familiar."

"You trusted a mage?"

"A childhood friend. We happened to cross roads and travel in the same direction before she died. Strangely, though, her familiar did not die with her and has been my guide ever since."
"But, to more pressing matters. I come to assist you in your fight against this death knight. Though I have not yet powers to turn or banish him, I am quite skilled at healing, both natural and divine. Will you accept my help?"

Salome looked over the figure of the blind half-elf and wondered what help he could offer. She believed in the sword. She lived and died by it. She believed in Paladin, though she had never seen him with her own eyes. She could tell by the changing expressions on Merrick and Calderas that they were unimpressed. She might have ignored him too, at one time, but she had been converted some time ago, to keep an open mind about such things by a very persistent soothsayer, known as ‘Rain’. His words about Dalamar had struck a chord.

Lonestar nodded to the empty seat. “Join us friend, and you are welcome company”. She thought on his words. “Perhaps I was being pig-headed to think that Soth was the only death-knight on Krynn. There could be others”, she said.

Even before she heard the laughter, she knew what the other two knights would say. They scoffed and laughed. Salome kicked them under the table, but they did not heed her angry glares and warnings.

“You never change, do you Salome?” teased Calderas. Salome shrugged a shoulder, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. An eyebrow rose challengingly, but Calderas shook his head and raised his arms in defeat.
“Oh no!” he said, still laughing, “One beating a week is my limit. I could not take the blow to my pride did you best again. Perhaps on Monday, when I have a new week’s quota to work with”. So saying he rose to his feet, and patted Merrick’s shoulder. “Our watch begins now”, he reminded. Salome said her goodbyes as the two left.

She turned her attention to the elf. “They are good men at heart”, she said. “That is when their blood remembers to circulate to their heads once in a while. She winked at the boy.

The boy had finished his meal. Salome sat and watched him. And you, she thought. What on earth am I to do with you? She knew for a fact that the despondent villagers would take their anger out on the boy were he without protection. She snorted. And guess who had just become his fairy godmother.

“Boy. Do you know how to clean a shield? Care for a horse? Perhaps, you can act as my squire till we can find a more suitable apprenticeship for you- boy with no name?” the knight asked. Her eyes drifted over him. I started life just as you did, thought Salome. Were it not for the kindness of others, I might have not made to my twentieth year at all.

The knight frowned. She hoped the elf would not take any offence at the impertinent question, but the boy meant well. She was sure that the elf would soon realize that. Salome reluctantly rose to her feet and nodded to the two at the table.

“I must go on sentry duty at the main gates”, she said in way of answer to their questioning looks. “You know where to find me of you need me”, this she directed to the boy. “Do not fear that the villagers will try to harm you again, they know you are under out protection now”. She nodded to the elf.

“See you around”, she said, before leaving.

The villagers watched as the Solamnic knight with the wine-red hair and golden-brown eyes that could so easily turn to anger, mounted her roan. She was 21 years old and had already built herself a reputation as being one tough cookie. Her heritage had always been a mystery. Nobody knew more than the gossip. Some said she was the General, Sir Wilfred Lonestar’s bastard. Others said she was his niece, come to live with him when her parents had died. Few knew the truth.

Salome rode Nimka to the gatepost and then dismounting, relieved Merrick of the chore. The other man on duty with her was Calderas. The two knights would march around the perimeter of the village, and when they met, they would salute each other, and then do an about turn and circle all the way around till they met at the other pole. It was a tiresome chore.

“How’s the boy, he talk yet?” Calderas asked, when they met. Salome nodded.
“He opened his mouth,” she said with a nod, before turning around and looping back.

“Say anything interesting?” Calderas asked when they next met. Salome grinned.

As he neared the town, he could sense the feeling of relvulsion growing stronger. As one of the undead, he had a natural hatred of the living. Unlike most though he tended to hold back.

But, since he travelled almost always and without rest, he was often confronted with the urge to kill for the sake of killing. The very idea of going through a place so full of life caused his senses to go crazy.

But, there was also temptation. The temptation to slide thorugh and explore such a place. It was something he could just possibly do and get away with.

In the past, Asharan had found that sometimes, people didn't realize he was a dead man right away. While he was unusual to almost all people's eyes, he didn't always elict the apporiate response. They felt a sense of wrongness, but tended not to act on it.

In 1000 years, he had never understood this response, but he had learned to take advantage of it. It allowed him to be a part of this world.

He was very near the gates. He sat there, wondering if he should enter. It had been a while since he had done it. And maybe he would find some information."There is no greater joy than to be reborn with every heartbeat." Belldandy.

While Calderas made a study of the tall woman with the wine-red hair and golden-brown eyes, who was only a few months younger than himself, musing how he was ever going to get her in his bed, he noted that Salome was not replying to his remarks with her usual ‘devil-may-care’ quips. His eyes narrowed and followed her gaze to the hilltop where a lone figure sat upon a dark horse.

“Trouble?” asked Calderas, hand on sword. Salome shook her head, her hair flying like a red flag in the rising wind.

“I do not know” she said, honestly. The two knights waited for the rider to make his next move. When nothing was done, Salome grew impatient and mounted her steadfast roan, Nimka and rode out to the hill to meet the rider, unheeding of Calderas’s curses and pleas for caution.

As she neared the figure, a strange feeling began to seep into her bones. One she did not understand, or like.

"Hail, Milady." His voice was odd. It had a hallow sound, yet at the same time the voice sounded it belonged to a young man in his twenties.

“Hail!”, she lifted her chin in silent challenge. “Sir Salome Lonestar, Knight of the Rose” she barked. Her eyes narrowed onto the strange youthful figure before her. She patted the ancient Elven Sword that always rested by her side- The Rothlorien. The Red Flower Flame

Nimka danced underneath her, snorting into the air restlessly. In all her 20 years, she had never felt the chill she did now as she looked on at her unknown adversary. She knew something was wrong- was warned to it by her skittish young roan. However, she could not fathom what it was right away. Her commander had always instructed her to tread with caution in unknown waters. She heeded the advice.

A sixth sense told her she was being played, but she let it slide, for the moment. One day you and I will come to blows- will we not? Salome took the knight’s measure. Even thought his face was youthful, his assurance and arrogance was equal to her own. The Rothlorien flared by her side, but she let it remain sheathed. Now was not the time for war.

Salome shook her head, the strands of red hair whipped about her face like a wild dervish in the rising wind, a scarlet torch which even now, unbeknown to both, was guiding Calderas to her side.

“A shadow” she shook her head and grinned. The chill down her back became more persistent. Her hands felt numbed with an unfamiliar coldness. “The villagers have been spreading rumors ever since their temple was desecrated”. Her golden brown eyes narrowed perceptibly. “You must have heard some of this tale while traveling these parts, and conducting your secret business, Asharan”.

She wondered what his secret was. She knew he would not tell her outright.

He could sense the fire in this woman and the mistrust. She seemed to be unusual compared to others. He was a little worried that there might be an unfortunate incident if he didn't get this conversation over with.

"Well, I can assure you that I am not involved with that matter. So it would be fitting that you let me pass now."

As he talked to the half-elf he started to feel a little anxious to stretch his legs. "I think I will step out and have some air." He stood up and walked to the door. As he did so many eyes looked him over. He knew that the villagers didn't like him staying here but, as long as the knight protected him they would not harm him.

He walked outside and looked around to see if the knight was returning. He saw that she was not inside the village so he decided to go look around. As he did so he walked closer and closer to the villages gate. And when he came near the gate he felt a chill run down his spine. He didn't like the feeling.

Yet what if the lady knight was in trouble? He was no fighter yet he could yell and call out for the other two knights that he had saw talking to her. As he looked at the gates he made a decision. "Alright here go's nothing." He walked out of the village and looked around.

He saw one knight looking towards the little hill and then saw the lady knight talking to a stranger. As his gaze looked at the rider the coldness swept over him in an instance. He could not move, run, scream, or even move an eyebrow. The chill had tooken hold of him as fast as lightning. All he could do was pray that somebody would help him get away from this stranger for he thought this stranger was illuminating the chill.

She did not like his tone. There was something in his manner that did not ring true, and then again there was the Rothlorien. It had flared to life too quickly. But his words about the tragedy were true enough. The young did know how to attract trouble.

Her suspicions began to grow. The chill was not easy to accustom to, and was unusually strong on this hillside. She could tell that his impatience was beginning to set in.

"Your assurances will be taken at face value, Sir Knight”, Salome said- for a true knight did not give false witness. “You vouch that you are not involved with that matter. So be it. But if you mean to remain in this area, I cannot let you pass at once. I will have to question you further no matter how secret your cause. I’m afraid I will have to press the issue, though it will pain me to do so against a fellow knight”. She paused, and let him see the clarity of her eyes.

“On the other hand, if you are simply passing through, go in peace and may Paladin guide your way”. She did not know why she said the last, but it gave her a measure of satisfaction to do so.

Nimka danced beneath her feet. She kicked the young roan to still his restlessness. She could feel it in her own blood. A strange agitation. But she would not give in to the urge to draw her sword, not without provocation. Neither would her horse. He was young, but he would learn.

She waited for a reply and saw Asharan’s eyes draw towards the camp. Calderas was mounted on his horse, ready to ride to her aid, should she need it, and beside him was the boy, Eric. Salome watched Asaharan. Saw the expression on his face change. Her hand hovered over the Rothlorien, warned by some sixth sense.

“What is it?”. To be or not to be, ay there's the point,

Ignorance is bliss after all. If the boy doesn't know about his divinity and place in the scheme of things, then he won't become a god. And then I don't have to kill him. I can go back to good old mercenary work until the next one rises. Happy day.

He focused back on Salome.

"Who are your friends? That kid...he seems familer."

He tried to sound as harmless and friendly as possible. He knew that her suspicions were roused. Truely dedicated Solomic Knights could be hard to deal with. This woman seemed very dangerous as well."There is no greater joy than to be reborn with every heartbeat." Belldandy.

She barely glanced back again; her sharp eyes were securely fastened onto the strange knight now.

“A fellow knight and squire, nothing more”, she dismissed lightly. “Your intent Asharan”, she persisted with single-mindedness, “do you plan to say in this district, for if you do, you will have to divulge your secrets. All paths must be investigated by the Knights of Solamnia”. It was pretentious and more akin to something Calderas or Merrick would quote; than Salome Lonestar, but the man was making her uneasy.

He knew that a half truth would be best. He really couldn't remember a more stuborn woman.

"I am investigating the incident. I had heard that the boy who was killed had a brother. So I went to find him before he could be found by the enemy." The Death Knight looked at the young squire with intent.

"And so it appears I have found him."

“Now that is interesting”, said Lonestar. “Why would a foreign Knight be looking for a dead boy’s twin?” she pursued. She did not think that the street urchin was the dead boy’s brother. Eric had mentioned little of a family and she had assumed that he had none. Why else would he have been wandering through the villages, alone? Asharan had obviously made a mistake. He was begining to feel a little annoyed. This woman was a little too Solomic. The same pushiness was there. The same distrust of anything suspicious.

Of course considering what the trueth...

"I know because I had seen the other before he died. They are like twins. There is no way that this can be coincidence.

And as for the why of the manner...I have made it my mission to see that those with power, don't use it for certian means..."

This was news to her. Eric and the dead boy were brothers. She was sure that Eric was unaware of this himself…or of he was- the boy would have some fast-talking to do when she turned her attention to him.

It had been the Knight Commander who had gone personally to investigate the temple site. She had not visited the crime scene herself. Her primary duty had been the safekeeping of the village. Kaloris was leading the investigation in the temple area. However, none of this showed on her implacable face. She was a senior knight and well trained in the art of war.

“Very well Asharan, you have answered some of my questions. Go in peace, unless of course you change your mind, and feel inclined to answer the rest”, she said with a wry twist to her lips. She remained on the hilltop. She would not turn around until he was no longer in her vision of sight.

As Asharan passed and went into the town Eric collapsed after he was inside. "I have a funny feeling about him." He panted heavily. The coldness had tooking so much strength from him he thought he was gonna go into a coma. He got up very slowly and his knees shook violently.

He stood up straight yet inside of him he was begging for mercy to sit down once again. "I will go back to the Inn and sit down again and rest." He walked back towards the town. Every step he took he thought the next would be his last. He finally reached the door and opened it up and went to sit by the half-elf again. He would definately fall asleep easy tonight.

“Double the guards on sentry duty, and have that one watched carefully”, she said, following Asharan with her eyes.

Calderas frowned. “What do you suspect?” asked the knight. Salome could do no more than shrug her shoulders.

“I do not know, yet”, she said in clipped tones. She left Calderas to see to the arrangements and rode Nimka back into the village. She went straight to the inn where she knew Eric would be found. She had questions for the boy, and plenty of them. To be or not to be, ay there's the point,

There was nothing subtle about the way the Knight of the Rose burst through the door of the inn, sending it crashing against the sidewall. Nor was there any warmth in the cold eyes that hunted the dimly lit room for the boy. They skipped over the blind seer and then narrowed with cold fury as they landed on the boy. She noted the stranger seated by his side, but paid little attention to the ‘mystery’ man. Her cold fury and all her attention was fixed on the boy.

“Eric!” she said in a voice that rang with steel, and carried. “Pray, a word in your ear!”. Certainly not a quiet word by the sound of her…

Salome could not explain why she was so angry. She only knew that her meeting with Asharan had not been profitable. It had opened more doors and left many questions unanswered. And this boy- who had been under her eye all this time- this boy could very well be the key.

Talia Burrfoot wandered into town. This would be just one stop among the many on her journey. She was 20 years old, and had not gotten over her Wanderlust yet. She sometimes wondered if she would ever get over it.
She walked through the town, examining everything she passed. There were many nice things, and quite a few that people just left lying around. She picked up a few items, and put them in her pouch. She continued on, and forgot about what she had just done. And as always, what she did pick up, she met with the sound excuse that if they wanted their things that they would have picked them up and put them away.
She made her way further and further into town. Her thirst started to creep up on her, so she went to find a suitable inn to get a drink at, and possibly spend the night in as well. She spotted an inn that suited her fancy, and went inside. Upon entering she saw a young boy and a mysterious man in a hooded cloak. Pretending to ignore them, she went up to the bar, and sat down. “Eric” said Salome, “We need to talk, you and I”. She let out a deep sigh. She did not want to vent her anger over Asharan’s duplicity on this unarmed innocent, but for a moment there, it had seemed just so…what was it about this strange knight that had got under her skin? She could not fathom it. Did not understand it. She was a soldier, not a thinker. She left the decision making to the High Council and simply followed the marching orders she was given.

Her mood gentled as she took in the face of the boy. Okay, she thought. Cool down first. She went to the bar to order a draught of ale. The cool drink would sweeten her temper, and then perhaps her mind would be clear when she talked to the boy- calmly and rationally.

She knew it was her weakness, one that her enemies could easily use against her. Her rage.

“Barman! Ale!” She nodded to the kender perched on the stool. She had not seen this one about before. She quickly checked her purse and removed it to the other side.

“And who might you be?”.

Crimson had learned long ago that remaining silent, and keeping ones ears open will give a lot of information.

He was quite sure the boy was his task. But he was unsure in what way. He was never told of course. He was just sent to a new world, where he would have to figure out what to do. He had been to Krynn before various times, so he new what kind of world this was.

The boy Eric, gave him a strange feeling. He could sense things about people. The kender was Cheerfull without fear, the blind elf was thoughtfull en perceptive and the knight was honorbound and righteous. But the boy he couldn't tell, it was something strange yet vaguely familiar.

He decided to wait out and see what happened.

He then strode away. As he walked through the town, people shyed away or looked at him fearfully. Yet, he was descreet enougth to hear tiny bits of information about the boy.

The conclusion reached by the people was that he must be a witch or some other kind of abomination.

He couldn't help but want to slam his head against the wall. When he had arrived on Ansalon centuries ago, it had been a center of culture and learning. But, now even after the return of the gods, the people were worse then the so called heathens they feared.

He shook his head.

Asharan stood off to the side trying to decide what to do. He felt hesitant to do anything.

The one boy called Caleb had been too immeresed in the situation to have been spared. This boy appeared clueless though. Maybe, just maybe he could be spared.

The Knight would have liked that. Even a millenum of hate and pain didn't erase his ability to feel remorse and grief.

But, the rumors running around this town couldn't be ignored. He made a sound like a sigh.

He turned on his heel and head towards the inn. He would have to find out more about this boy before he choose death or life for him. And for that he had to get the boy to come to him.

That would mean making peace with Salome. He felt annoyed. That woman was going to be infuriating."There is no greater joy than to be reborn with every heartbeat." Belldandy.

Salome nodded her head. What was it about men? They thought that they made good liars when any infant could see through the lie. Yet she played along, she had no other choice. Her duty was to keep the peace not make random challenges.

She drank her ale and went to sit beside Eric and the strange new man. The seer had said very little so far. The kinder had been friendly enough but she had already had to reclaim her purse from those quick fingers twice and she thought it best to keep her distance until Talia gave a reply to her proposition.

“Eric”, she said to the boy. “You know that I will help you. I have given my word and to a knight- that is a sacred thing. No power on Krynn will make me break my word”, she said. The boy could know nothing of knights and their codes, having come from the streets and it was important that he understand that despite her station and her orders, he had her protection. “I will help you but I cannot do that unless you answer my questions. Asharan knew you. Why?” she asked.

“What is that black knight to you?” It was perhaps unfortunate for Salome that her nemesis should choose that moment to enter the inn, closely followed by his shadow- Walter Merrick. Salome nodded to Merrick, a silent signal unnoticed by any who wasn’t paying attention.

As he was about to answer her questions he felt the chill. He slowly turned his head to the door. As soon as his head was fully turned Asharan walked in. The coldness swept over him once again and bound him to his seat. He tried to look to the left or to the right but, to no avail.

He then remembered that Salome had given her word to protect him. This gave him strength. He gathered up all his strength and tried to push the coldness back. The coldness soon retreated and he was able to move his eyes and his lips. "Salome, I think Asharan is a death knight."

He whispered this into her ear. He did not know how he knew this but something told him he was right.

Salome was at first stunned by the boy’s words. She moved her lips, ready to make one of her razor-sharp retorts but the boy’s fear communicated itself to her, in his eyes.

“Eric” she began, ready to push aside childish fantasies but his eyes caught at her heart. She considered his words. Remembered the chill that had swept over her when she had first encountered the black knight on the brow of the hill. Recalled the flaring of her Elven sword. The unusual skittishness of her well trained thoroughbred.

“That is quite a statement to make,” she said, considering her options carefully. This was a question of faith. As a knight of the Rose, she was dutiful to Paladin. A death knight was by definition- Paladin’s enemy, and therefore her own. However, to accept this, she had to at first accept that Asharan was a death knight- a ghost.

It was a question of faith…but she could see that the boy believed it. She nodded and laid a hand on his shoulder.

“Prove it to me” she said.

"Ok I will." He thought of his choices. What could he do to prove Asharan was a death knight? He could pull off that helm of his or his scarf. Yet would that show Salome that Asharan was a death knight?

Then something came to him. He didn't know if it would work but, if it did it would truly show Asharan's true colors. "Asharan, show your self as you truly are." He whispered this to himself over and over again. Suddenly he saw the true Asharan. He knew that he was the only one who could see Asharan in his true form.

Yet how to show Salome this? He put his hand on her shoulder. "You shall see what I see." He said in a whisper. He could tell that whatever he had just done was some kind of magic.

It frightened her and it caught her unwillingly. One moment she was staring at Asharan, as she knew him, a youth with pale blond hair and dark forbidding eyes, and then, as if in a dream, she saw the knight as Eric viewed him. What she saw was not mortal.

The edges were blurred and grey and yet the face was as vivid as a nightmare. The pale golden hair had been replaced by hell fires. The youthful face was nothing more than a hollow skeleton’s face, and the eyes were the worst of all. They were no longer dark and forbidding. They were two distinct pools. Two deep wells of a soulless being.

“Paladin!” she swore and jerked to her feet. Eric’s hand fell from her shoulder and she was once more looking at a man. Nothing more, nothing less. Just a man. She turned to Eric, her eyes accusing.

“And what does that make you, Eric?” she asked.

"That makes him the divine progeny of one of the gods. Thats what it makes him." Said Asharan as he walked over to them.

He was suprised that the boy had been able to do something like that. If not for the fact that the knight had long ago trained himself to sense when he was being watched, he wouldn't have known.

"So I scare you don't I? I don't blame you. Its proably been a long and trying day for you boy." The knight's voice was a cross between sympathy and amusment.

"So tell me what you want to do and don't want to do. Ask me anything, but in order to get the right answer, you must ask the right questions. And I will either kill you, hurt you, leave you alone or follow your command depending on what happens."

“You will not kill this boy, Asharan.” she said. “I have sworn to protect him. You know what my word means. You are a knight”. She laughed then; it was a bitter laugh devoid of humor. Some knight!

“It would be foolish to try anything when you face attack, both from your head and your back”. She indicated to Merrick who had casually slipped in behind the death knight, sword in hand, and then again, there was the stranger. She had seen his body tense. He would play his part in this, she was sure.

“You cannot take us all”, she said. Her eyes were cold. “You cannot win this here”.

But, there was a small faction who felt that this must be a miracle. They wanted to take advantage of the children when they were born.

So trusting only a few family members, she gave birth in secert and had her brother take the children home to his estate. She lied to the order and told them that it had been a stillbirth." He sighed.

"On the way to the estate though, the travelers were attacked. It had appeared that all everyone except your brother had died. No mortal except the mother knew their had even been twins, and she never spoke.

Those are the only details I remeber.""There is no greater joy than to be reborn with every heartbeat." Belldandy.

As he listened to Asharan he dropped his head, but then he had an idea. "Salome, could we go to Erogoth? That way I can find my mother and also find out who my father was." He looked at her with a pleading face.

He hoped that she would say yes. Then he could finally find out more about himself!

Crimson released the tense from his body. The knight would not attack in this situation. Not so much because he was outnumbered. But more because he told the truth.

Without being asked. He said, "Given that this man is after you, and that there are others after you. It might be wise not to go look for your mother. It might endanger her if you find her." All the while keeping his eyes on Asharan.

This knight was interesting. He was confident he would survive this fight. Of course so was Crimson, but he had over fivehundred years of experience to back him. What did this guy have to make him so confident.
He did not know, but he was sure he would find out.

Salome could understand Eric’s wish to see his mother. She was even willing to abandon her post to help the lad in his quest. She knew that Calderas was man enough to command the cohort, and would care for the village in her absence. She knew that it would mean a demotion but she was willing to accept that too.

She would explain all to the KC when he returned from making his own enquires at the temple site. Moreover, when she subsequently returned to the chapter house in Palanthus.

She had a feeling that she would do more to solve this mystery if she kept Asharan in her sight, than if she remained dutifully by the village.

But one thought plagued her.

“If the party was attacked, it is entirely possible that your mother is already dead, Eric”, she said. She then Salome turned to Asharan.
“Who was this God”. The chances were that one who acted so carelessly, could easily be a God of evil…that left the knight of Paladin with a bit of a religious dilemma.

It seemed to me that it might be a god of good, but don't quote me on that. But, it was kept so quite, I have no way of knowing."

The Death Knight turned around suddenly as if to leave.

"I am going to leave now. Together, you may be more powerful then me, but if I want to go, than you had better let me." He said it cooly, as if speaking of some annoying little pest.

“Go then, if you must!” said the knight. “We will take council here, and make a group decision”.

She watched as the death knight left the room and then turned to her newfound companions.

“Any thoughts people?” she asked. Merrick nodded to her once, before sliding away in the knight’s shadow. Walter Merrick was a nuisance at times, but he was a good soldier and a stealthy tracker. As Asharan left the place, he was pretty sure he was being followed. But, he didn't feel like bothering with a spy.

"I would have mentioned the greater threat to the boy, but my fury is just to great. I always do all the hard jobs for Amadeus. I am the one who is evil incarnte for the world to see.

He hids in the shadows, allowed to believe that he isn't tainted by his hideous condition." He was muttering to himself in a strange launguage similer to an archiac form of common. At least if it wasn't for the thick accent he spoke it with.

As far as Salome could tell, she had only one option. She had to kill Asharan. A tough objective, considering the knight was already dead.

She was running out of options though. She had an instinct that the innocent boy found dead in the temple had been Asharan’s doing. She did not know why, or how, but she trusted her instincts and they had gotten her this far in life.

She knew that she would do well to trust them in this.

Her golden gaze fell to the boy sitting at the table, his head in his hands hung low, and dejectedly. He was confused about his power and his future. She wished that she could help him but she knew that his path was his own to make. She could not aid him in that. He wanted to search for his mother. It was only natural.

A grim smile filled her face as she recollected her own dear parent. There had never been much to love about Uri. She had made her life as a whore on the streets of Palanthus and had left Salome an orphan at the age of six.

If it had not been for the kindness of her adopted father, the Knight General, Sir Wilfred Lonestar- she would have been cast into a similar fate.

Her mind returned to the present. What she could do, was make sure that Eric survived long enough to make that decision for himself.

Her thoughts had made a full circle.

It all came down to the death knight.

It all came down to a fight…possibly her last. To be or not to be, ay there's the point,

"Perhaps not." Crimson broke the silence directing his attention to Salome, "Not yet at least. You are not alone in this."

Crimson got up towering to his full 6 foot 2. With on movement he cast of his cloak, and with another moved his sword to his back. Now the silver-inlaid hilt of a two handed sword stuck out from his shoulder. The sheath, itself was slightly curved. (Think Katana).

Crossing his arms he faced Salome. Waiting for a responce.

As the death knight continued his restless pacing around the town, he could detect the terror that fill it and its people.

"I don't know the last time I was surrounded by so many gossipy humans." He muttered.

He had stopped feeling annoyed and was now impatient. This waiting game that had developed was not his style at all. He was still at heart the type who craved action.

"Maybe I will go back there and see what they have decided to do. Maybe I will even pick a fight with Salome."

He grinned at the thought. He loved a good scuffle and it was obvious that she was a tough one. He liked to test that type, to see how powerful they were.

Years of playing the mercenary when there weren't young gods to kill had left him with a hunger for action.

"Yep, a good scuffle would do wonders for me."

He was positively humming as he strode up to the inn. Instead of going in though he leaned against a wall by the door. He felt it would be a good idea to let the knight following him report back."There is no greater joy than to be reborn with every heartbeat." Belldandy.

Asharan leaned against the door frame.

"But, I admire your deamenor as well. You have lived a difficult life, that much is obvious. But, you still act with valor towards others. That is hard to find in any time."

"So I would propose a fight. Well, more like a duel. A fight until one of us draws first blood. The victor decides what the prize will be. "I only wish I could do something like that." Muttered Asharan.

He could hear something in the back of his head.

Amadeus, is that you?

Heh, Asharan, I thought you said you had killed the boy already.

I did, but his wretched twin popped up. I am kind of busy here, so tell me what you want.

Rian's followers are on the move. I think one of them is coming in your direction. You need to leave quickly before you become more well-done than you already are... The voice replied wryly.

What!! One of those freaks is coming...wait do you mean by more well-done?

Asharan, no time to argue. Leave now or else you may cease to exist. The voice was now stern, but there was an undercurrent of desperation.

The death knight also felt that the voice was no longer there.

"Indari, come now." He said. The nightmare appeared in a torrent of fire.

He walked over to the creature.
