Calling the Inn disreputable, thought Ryle Brennick as he swirled his ale about in his tankard, would be praising it well beyond it's worth.

The lanky dark-haired fighter stretched in his chair, looking glumly down at the gritty mounds sloshing within his ale. With a bitter twist of his mouth he flung the stuff, tankard and all into the nearby firepit. If the gap-toothed bartender at the back saw fit to argue, the well-used bastard sword hanging at the mercenaries hip must have stilled his tongue, for the fighter received no rebuke for his behaviour... good, Ryle was sick to death of the pestering people in this city. Flotsam was a lot less accomodating ever since that mad aurak had taken over... Water Prophet, indeed....

With a sigh, the fighter leaned over the table to tap his companion on the shoulder. The companion, a dwarf, looked up with a start.

"Are you sure it'swhat you think it is, Ronogh?" Ryle asked in a whispered tone, lest he be overheard.

"I be tellin ye, Ryle," The Dwarf rasped under his breath, " It be a treasure map. See this here be the woods of Silvanesti, these pointy things're the foothills of the Khalkists for sure, and this yella X, here, that's the treasure." The Dwarf leaned back, proud of himself. " Besides, I've got confirmation from some experts"

"Confirm-!" Ryle choked off an irritated outburst, " Ronogh, those 'experts' of yours were nothing but a drunken cartographer and the goblin you took the map from. The fact is that the map-maker would've told you anything as long as you kept buying drinks, and the goblin would've done anything to save his skin... ESPECIALLY tell you that piece of scrap was a treasure map.." Ryle frowned down at the tattered yellow parchment, beneath a quick scribbling of a landscape was an arrow pointing upwards and a bit of script saying "Kalkiss Montins". Ryle swore quietly. "Look Ronogh, the blasted idiot who made this couldn't even spell properly, what makes you think he could hide a fortune in steel and gemstones?"

"Well," the dwarf," mayhaps the map isn't real, Brennick. But all I'm saying is 'What if it is'." He reached across the table to lay a battle-scarred hand on his friends arm. "What if it is?"

Ryle bit his lip in consternation for a moment and made to reply, then stopped as he saw a figure at the far end of the smoke-filled room rise and walk toward them. "Hide the map, Ronogh, we've a visitor".....

OOC: Okay people, we've got a standard treasure hunt on our hands. If you didn't get the clue about the "mad aurak" and the Water Prophet ( a la "Lord Toede") we're in Flotsam, shortly after the War of the Lance. (therefore, we can have No Kot/Kon or chaos spawn..sorry) I invite anyone who wishes to join AND who wishes to participate in a well-written, enjoyable thread. While I will be playing two characters myself, I will also try to take the role of the DM in the thread, but only to help advance the story and to deal with prople who are making an ass of themselves, at all other times I'll just be another player, like you. ( Don't worry, I'm pretty lenient) With your help, I'd like to make this one of the better ones

THanks

IC: The elf sat with a hood over his head at the bar. A dark green cloak fell about him, concealing his dual rapiers. The elf turned to see what the commotion in the corner was.
A tall human(OOC: i assume) with a disgusted look on his face sat in the corner beside a gruff-looking dwarf(as if there were any other kind) near the firepit.
The elf turned back to his drink but kept an ear on the two....

.........treasure is it? Mayhaps things are picking up.

The thought of a good old fashioned treasure hunt brought the elf to his feet. He strode purposefully toward the two companions. He ignored the looks that could curdle milk and approached them with a smile.

"Greetings friends. I overheard talk of treasure and decided to offer my talents with the sword, or two as it was." The elf smirked. They didnt. He outsretched his hand "The names Ralothryall, Ralothryall Le'Fend""Why do people run from me?" Ralph, proceeds to pee his pants

OOC: Yes, Ryle's a human, 25 yrs of age at this point in time, you can see his profile in the Dragonlance Character hall... welcome, by the way, I hope I can expect a good storyline from you.... ;)

IC: Ronogh shot to his feet as the elf sauntered to the table and offered his hand. " Overheard aye? Methinks you're a dirty sneak, elf!" The young Dwarf made a grab for the battle-axe resting on the table, but stopped when Ryle's gloved hand clamped onto his arm like a vise.

"Dammit, dwarf, control your temper! And you," Ryle spoke, with a tone of command that belied his youth," sit yourself down, before you have this whole rat hole swarming atop us." Looking around quickly at the other patrons of the tavern, who were now staring at his table, Ryle laughed loud and drunkenly, slapping the elf's shoulder and spilling ale on the fuming dwarfs lap. A quick check over his shoulder revealed that the patrons had turned away once again, and the fighter straightened and stared at the elf with eyes that were cold sober.

" There," he spoke in a hushed voice, " now they think we're nothing but a trio of drunks." Ryle drew his sword and laid it on the table next to Ronogh's axe. Now master elf, tell me, quickly and quietly, mind, who you are, why you're here, why we should let you join us.... and, most importantly," the fighter laid a hand flat over the hilt of his sword, "why we shouldn't kill you......"

Black robes spilled out around him as he regarded the trio with earnest, the silver runes sparkling in the nearby candle light. He smirked and picked a mug. Pulling down the hood, revealing the sharp features elven features, and piercing green eyes, long un-bound black hair cascaded to his shoulders. Standing up and walking over to trio he butted in. "Mind if i join you friends.....your conversation....beg my eaves-dropping...was sounding rather interesting.....Ullenalathala.....Ullen if you wish."

OOC: Ullen isn't your typical black robe magic user....he seems to be slightly more freindly and forth coming....but don't worry, the seeds of evil are still rooted deep in him.Come see my dragonlance rp:

OOC: Nice to have you Dark_master, you're a senior here so I'm guessing you have a good idea what kinnd of story would be good... and to any who are new, a "good story" means one without uber-warrriors, demi-gods and other munchkins, no invincible characters please...

anyhoo

IC: Ryle stared disbelievingly at the features of the newcomer, who had slid into the seat across from him, next to the other on, Raloyth-something or some such elfy name. He stared blankly while the black robe spoke...

Ullenalathala.....Ullen if you wish

"I do, believe me." Ryle shook his head wearily and leaned back in his chair. He looked at Ronogh, a smirk on his face. "Well dwarf, so much for the secrecy."

With a quick hand movement, the mercenary slid a hand into the dwarf's vest and drew forth the map, placing it squarely on the table before him. "Well then gentlemen, if you insist on nosing around our business, you might as well know the whole story." The warrior reached for his ale cup, then stopped as he remembered where'd his had gone. Nonplussed, the swordsman winked at Ullen and slid the ale mug from his grasp. Taking a sip he returned it, smiling all the wider." I thank you, master mage. Any man knows that a tale must be told with a moist throat and loosened tongue."

" We came across the map just outside the city, a week past. My friend and I were working for the town constable, flushing out the last of the hobgoblins hiding in the forests around this...." Ryle looked around at the hazy atmosphere, "Fair city of yours. Anyway, just south of a grove of willows to the East, we were ambushed by a band of goblins... well.. they tried to jump us. We slew them quickly and chased after their leader, who was decked out in feathers and to all appearances, entirely insane. Ronogh cornered him in a hollow below an oak, and he tossed all manner of objects at us ,including what he called his "treasure map". He said we could have it all if we spared his life."

"We killed him anyway." Ronogh spoke up, grinning.

Ryle stopped, gauging the reactions of the two nwcomers. HE smiled lazily. "My friend has no love for goblins, as you can tell. Well, when we returned to the city, Ronogh here brought the map to a cartographer on Crest street." Ryle decided to leave out the fact that the cartographer was a drunkard. " He proclaimed the map an adept rendering of the lands around the khalkists, even if it is crudely labelled. So, we've decided to go in search of this fabled treasure of the mountains."

"We have?!?" Ronogh sounded surprised.

"Yes," Ryle pounded his fist on the table, " we have. Now good sirs, since you already know of our plans, we must tell you that the map MAY be a fake. That's a risk we have to take. I think another set of blades could help us out," he said, nodding at Ralo," and a master of the Art is always useful. So, you can either join us, or," Ryle's grin froze in place and his dancing brown eyes darkened to black as he patted his blade, "you can forget everything you've heard..."

"Well, gentlemen, what's your answer?" "If at first you don't succeed...... destroy all evidence that you tried."

Ullen closed his eyes, his brow creasing ever so slightly. Upon opening them..."Yes...i will join you....you can never have enough gold....", Nor can you ever have enough items of a mystical nature....lets hope this suspected treasure has a few such..., he smiled. Hoping that none of them guessed his thoughts.

He stood, robes rustling softly. "If you excuse me for now, i must attend to my mare, she can become restless if i leave her for too long. Plus i must make ready for leaving.....i shalln't be long gentelmen...", he turned sharply and strode out the Inn, looking up...Nuitari was full....a moon none but those of his robes could see....he smiled....Good..

His gaze lowered and fixed on the stables a short distance from the Inn....the surrounding woods were dense, but he melded with the shadows easily. After a small distance, he stopped, thinking that footsteps followed in his wake....he heard nothing else, save the scurrying of the nocturnal animals....but still, he was left un-easy.Come see my dragonlance rp:

Ember slinked through the shadows....her eyes on Ullen...the one she had hoped to meet. He may be able to solve her delimma. The panther kept her head low, her piercing green eyes reflecting light from the slender red moon. She slowed, and looked up, her eyes too saw Nuitari.

She shivered at this...and was unsettled at this finding....but she moved forward anyway....her shift in power would destory her if she didn't find help...her ability to merge with shadows was running out of control. She let out a soft growl...and literally stepped sideways into the shadows of the nearby trees....the darkness around her became tangible.

The world to her eyes became like a negative on a photograph, dark was light, light was dark...she followed the interlinking paths of light....merging with the shadows of the stable....hoping to catch him alone. She waited till he passed her, then she crawled free from the shadow...pulling free was becoming more and more difficult. She walked behind him slowly...her feet leaving no prints, making no sound.

She watched Ullen closely, the emerald sphere around her neck glowed with the same intensity as Ember's eyes.We dare to ask for more

A dark-skinned Ergothian sat at a far table in the corner, eyeing the two suspiciously. His glass eye held a permanent gleam, and never was greed as fair to him as his pegged leg. His leg still hurt him even to this day. It happened long ago by a battle against draconians. He spit at the thought.

Redric edged closer to the three, keeping his gaze in his mug. He heard the word ‘treasure’ and that’s all she wrote.

Redric got up cautiously, walking more on his left foot than his peg leg. He approached the two without a grin upon his dark face.

“I heard mention of treasure. I need a way out. I’m in financial debt. If you would take me on your journey, I would be a great asset, for I’m the greatest captain there ever was.” He spoke in a heavy Ergothian accent.

OOC: There's three of us at the table at the moment, Ryle, Ronogh, and Ralo..... heh, nice..... anyway

IC: Ryle watched the mage as he strod out into the night, then turned to speak to his companions.

" Alright, we'll need supplies, and fast. I plan to leave on the morrow, before any of the city officials catch wind of this... that draco they've got in charge is greedier than a drunken dragon, and almost as dangerous. We can't chance letting anyone know about our little secret... Alright, Ronogh make a list; ' Twelve fathom of sturdy rope, three weeks of trail rations, food for horses, bolt for that crossbow of yours, extra fur cloaks, and a generous supply of whiskey', You got that Ron... Ron?"

"I don't trust the 'robe', Ryle." Ronogh was still glaring darkly at the doorway where Ullen had disappeared. " I don't trust the black ones. You remember back in the war, when we were fighting, and this mage, he..."

Ryle cut him off with an impatient gesture, " Be a little more specific friend, we fought for both sides during the war, remember?" He flashed a wry grin at the young elf eside him, who was frowning.

"At the battle near the vingaard, after we had signed up with the Solamnics. Ya remember we snared this black robe, and he promised that he'd had enough of the war and following the Queen, so he pledged to tell the commanders about the Draco's troop movements. You remember him?" Ronogh raised his bushy eyebrows slightly.

" Kravas... that was his name. Yes I remember him, if you'll recall I slit his throat when we laid hold of him..."

Ronogh tapped on the table, staring at Ryle darkly. " You remember what he did?"

Ryle stared into his drink, remembering... THe mage was captured during an early campaign along the vingaard. He got loose in the night and sent up a flair to point their camp out to the draconians in the area. The dracos swept in upon Ryle's battlegroup, then Kravas called up some kind of pit fiend and set it upon them all, dracos and solamnics alike, the draco for supposedly abandoning him and the solamnics for capturing. Ryle had seen the good majority of his regiment decimated before he himself had managed to run a knife across the black robes neck.

"Yes, I remember." Ryle put a hand to his brow, then heard a voice speak up at his elbow. He looked up to see a Peg-legged Ergothian, standing beside him and offering his skills as a mariner.

" Oh good," Ryle rolled his eyes, " another would-be friend in need of money. Well Captain stick-toe, you may yet be useful... have you a ship, by any chance?"

Meanwhile, a few miles to the east, outside the city walls.....

A group of fifteen Hobgoblins milled about on the recently blooded grass near a grove of willows, picking at corpses strewn about the ground. Goblin corpses.

" All dead master." The Hobgoblin flipped over the last goblin corpse and dismissed it with a grunt. " All five. Stupid goblins died quick, not even have blood on blades." The burly Hobgoblin took up a rusted longsword owned by one of the dead goblins and tossed it into the woods with a casual flick of his burly arm.

" And the map, my dear Grun-ek," a robed man hissed from within the shadows of the trees, " what of it, is it gone?"

Grun-ek gave the goblin shaman another look then nodded briskly. " Is gone, Kra..er... Whisper. You 'member, we saw black haired human and little dwarf take when they left. They have now, we saw."

" Just making sure, child," the man's voice was a rasping hiss, a sound like gravel scraping on wood. " Our plan is working out as well as can be hoped." The man massaged the thin-white scar across his larynx, smiling coldly as he looked upon the dim, smoky haze hanging above flotsam. Soon Brennick and that irritating dwarf would set out from those gates, in search of the treasure. And they WOULD go in search of it, with the end of the war there was little work for mercs such as Ryle and the dwarf left around. These were desperate times, and desperate men would brave any peril for gold. So be it, let the filthy swordsaman and his pet dwarf wade into the khalkists in search of the treasure. THey'd clear the way for Whisper and his followers to sweep in and take it... an armory of magical weapons, a fortune in gemstones.. and power such as only the gods could know...

The brown-robed man laughed to himself as he watched the city gates Let the desperate men lead, fight and die for the treasure, Whisper would follow and Whisper would have his revenge.... "If at first you don't succeed...... destroy all evidence that you tried."

Redric held himself in thrall to the insulting words. The surrounding areas near his glass eye began to itch badly, but he did nothing about it.

“No, I am afraid that cutthroats took it as well. But don’t worry laddies, I can get us one. It’ll take some bargaining on my part, but I can get it done.” He glanced up at the barmaid and threw her some crude copper coins. “I’ll be back in ‘bout hour or so. You can get your supplies ready if you like.”

Redric walked painfully out the door and out into the street. The night was young with a salty taste to the air. Redric had loved Flotsam when he was young, but now it brought to many bad memories. He spit on the ground and walked off toward the wooden docks.

Ralo sat next the dwarf. He agreed with Ronogh about the black robe. It would not help his situation to be seen with a black robe.

But once again Ralothryall's overwhelming desire for adventure won out.

"I'm in. What do we need?" Ralo listened to the supplies list. "What do you need me to do?"

Ryle was not listening, his attention was drawn to the newcomer. Assembled they would look an odd bunch but it would certainly be interesting... "Why do people run from me?" Ralph, proceeds to pee his pants

Joomie was taking one of his evening flights in search of adventure. He happened to fly in one of the most run down Inn's he had ever seen. Right when he was wondering why he always went into the Inn's with the least respect he heard the word "treasure".

The 6 inch fairy stopped in mid-flight and did a flip. He flew toward a funny looking dwarf and Human man that looked like he was having a very bad day. There weres some other people there but he couldn't make them out because he didn't have his spectacle on. He flew up and landed on the table just as one of the occupants of the group said "What do you need me to do?".

Joomie announced that he was coming too and that he would make a good companion because he had Telekinetic powers. Also he explained that he was very resourcefull and a good companion. "Besides." He said "I think I have seen this map somewhere before." He paused and nothing happened so he said a bit nervously "When do we start?"WHO DA MAN???!!!

" What do you need me to do?"

" Well, first off Ralo, you'll need to get yourself a mount, the Ergothian can probably get us up the bay of Balifor and into Khur, but from then on it's hills and rock, so you'll need a good steed if you're to make it. Other than that it's up to you, you supply your own rations and you carry your own gear, so if you need any thing extra, it comes from your pocket. As well, you might see if you can get...."

"Here now, what's this??" An incredulous Ronogh elbowed Ryle, cutting him off in mid speech.

Ryle turned to look at his comrade, then frowned as he spied the miniscule humanoid capering on the table-top. A high pitched voice squeaked up at him, offering it's services on the trip ahead.

A pixie. Ryle shook his head incredulously. Of all the beings that could rise up to trouble him tonight, the gods had deigned to curse him with a pixie.

As the irritating little beast chattered on about it's powers , Ryle met the eyes of the elf and dwarf over the bottles atop the table. Grinning, he took up the elfs glass, drained it in one swallow, and placed it upside down over the pixies head, effectively trapping it inside. Ronogh laughed uproariously at this, pounding the table viciously as he watched the little humanoid wipe at the foam that oozed onto hiz wings. With a wink at the elf seated beside him, Ryle tossed a coin to the Innkeep, saying," A room for the night, bartender."

Still laughing, the dwarf got up to follow his friend, until Ryle turned to take Ralo by the shoulder.

"What?! Do take me as a fool, peggie?! You never owned this here boat, now leave before I really get angry!" The half-ogre slid his bulky wait off his chair and stood up. Redric stood his ground.

"I said leave fool!" The half-ogre's face changed color into a deep red. Redric thought he must be a fool faceing such a large man.

"I will leave, and I'll do it on this ship." The Ergothian said calmly. His glass eye started to itch again.

"HA! I will shove you under those waves, peggie! I you'll never see the light of day again!" Redric had heard those words before, but those lies never came true. The ship rocked gently in port, the sun was slowly fed itself to the western lands. The half-ogre called for his croonies, but they were all in town.

Redric ducked fast under the half-ogre's lazy punch. The large man was slow, to slow for his own good. Redric found his way behind the lumbering man. Redric's short-sword found its way into the half-ogre's back. All was said and done when Redric pulled him to the edge and watched him sink into the sea.

He almost gotten himself killed. His leg hurt badly, but he had his ship back, Redric reminded himself. Yeah, his ship.‘As the flame gets nearer the heart grows colder still,

Ralothryall sat at his table for a few minutes after Ryle and Ronogh had left him.

Orius sat languidly at his table seemingly paying no heed to anyone in the bar. He poked at his food halfheartidly and sipped his drink with even less enthusiasim.

Despite his seeming lack of interest, he paid close attention to the conversation of the three. Two had now left the table and were headed presumably to aquire lodging for the night. His blood started to boil and that old feeling of excitement began to well up inside him. For too long he had languished idley as time passed him by. 10 long years had passed since he had been anywhere of signifigance let alone an adventure.

He thought to himself.....*This must be a sign from the gods that I must move, to start my life anew*

A pang of regret hit him as he recalled that fateful day 10 years ago, the day he and his conrads stumbled upon a great chest filled with riches beyond their belief. Their adventuring had paid off....or so they thought. Carrying the chest was easy enough, they were all strong men, after ther many battles they fought, and the perils they endured just to reach the chest, they had renewed energy, they would all be rich. And suddenly what had been a bright sunlit dawn became dark in an instant. All of them looked up and to their horror..................was the dragon....when the carnage was over, he had been the only one to survive the ordeal but not unscathed........mentally, or physically.

With a start he came back to his senses. He always seemed to lose focus whenever he recalled that fateful day. He rubbed his arm absent mindedly as if it would dull the pain he knew would go away, dragonfire tends to do that to you, if you live that is. A hooded cloak covered his face, hiding his now milky white eyes, another 'gift' of the dragon attack, he was able to see quite well in the dark because of it better so even than the elves or dwarves. With anguished he let go of the painful memories though he would never forget. With word of this new adventure, he would let go of the past and start life anew. Adventure was in his blood. He was warrior, traveler, adventurer, jack of all trades. The name Orius had been renowned throughout the land, he intended to regain his lost glory, for himself...................for his conrads.

With his mind made up he wondered how he would gain their attention before they departed. All the while he knew gods willing.....that even that would work itself out.

With a motion to the barkeep he paid for his rather lackluster meal. There was much to be thought out in a short time.......

When Gan finished eating he walked out to the stable, passing Ullen along the way he wondered what a Dark Elf (Supposedly) would be doing in this part of Abinasnia.

"Gooday sir."

The Wyvern, Gart, took off from Gan's shoulder, he flew to the top of a tree and started to grow into a larger form.

Startled by the sudden appearance of the Wyvern, Ember broke cover Hissing and yowling as she bounded into the light, fur along her back sticking up on end...her emerald eyes bright, claws fully extended, her ears laying flat against her head.

Too late, she realized her true peril lay not with the wyvern....but with the people behind her. Her nature was more animal now than human....and the grip that the shadows had on her soul compounded that effect....it felt as though her body reacted without her concious command....and she was nearly helpless to control it.

Oh Gods above! Someone please notice the pendant, notice it's glow....someone manage to take it off! please! I fear my mind will forever be locked within that of a beast....that within the shadows... Came her mental scream...not knowing that even those sensitive to magic could hear her.

She crinched, her back against the building, her eyes seemed part pleading, part fear, and part desperate anger. Her tail lashed, her black fur seemed to meld in with the shadows

NO!! Please! Help! She cried, her growling turning to frightened cries of an animal in near pain. The shadows seemed to reach for her....and her body half wanted to go, to hide within it's embrace forever....yet her mind screamed for help...that part of her that was still human. We dare to ask for more

The words of a deadly spell danced across Gan's lips even before he noticed that Gart was not going after the animal.

[What is wrong, friend?]

[That is no animal.]

[Are you positive?]

[Of course.]

That was when Gan noticed the pendant.

[The pendant,] he pointed out to Gart, [That is why we felt the magic.]

[Hmmmmm...]

"Kabair-sholan tak rista mon thor!"

The chain of the pendant shatered like glass.

OOC: Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know what kind of wards are on the pendant.ast taserak sinuralin krynawi

Kalia_Majere

OOC: nope that's alright...there are not wards on the chain, just the pendant itself.

Ember felt as though fire was rippling through her body as the chain shattered, and the emerald pendant fell to the ground. A black shadow rushed across the Panther's body, and as it fled, it left a young woman in it's wake. She was still more feline than human....and she lay there on the ground shaking like the leaves on the trees around her.

Human-like in appearance, Ember's body was covered in fine black fur....her hair a thick mane of silver-grey. It fell into her Emerald colored, slitted pupiled eyes as she looked up. She wore a short grey tunic, and a knee-length skirt that was slit up either side, perfect for running. She took a deep shuddering breath as she steadied herself against the wall of the stables.

She looked up, then down at the pendant. Her hand reached for the emerald that lay in the grass, her hand clenching it tightly. She looked up and the fear faded from her gaze, and she stood.

As she did so, all fear and frailness fled from her....her stance stood easy, as if ready to defend herself if need be. Her smoke grey hair fell in loose waves and curls nearly to her waist. the tuffed black ears that peeked through her mane of hair where straight, only twitching to catch a stray sound. Her face was a mix between human and feline. Her eyes, intelligent and nearly completely human...but for the pupil's which were slitted like a cats. An involintary wince showed a flash of sharp white teeth. Whiskers twitched in the light breeze. A pair of sai was slipped into a black silk sash around her waist. She raised the emerald to her chest, clawed fingers easily seen, and bowed slightly at her waist.

"Thank you for helping me...Seem's that while under the influence of the spell of my pendant, I managed to learn the magic on my own....and I couldn't reverse it with the pendant on....and I couldn't get it off." Her gaze met Ullen's.

"I was actually hoping to meet with you master mage...hoping that you could help me with another of my plights...." she said softly, her voice near a purr, though there was a tremor of fear in it, and her eyes flicked momentarily to the shadows behind her.We dare to ask for more

OF course you're welcome to join Ont, nice to see you around again...

Hey, sylvan. Yeah I'm using the same character for this thread too, but I figured I'd set it before our NEwbie adventure... I thought it was wrong to set it after that one when it isn't finished yet... I do think we should go back to finish it someday, but not right yet. You and the others are welcome to join though.... :)

and I'm sorry, folks, but I can't post tonight, between my mind-numbing job and giving in to my capitalist overlords ( i.e xmas shopping) I'm all tuckered out... I promise to have a post up tomorrow though, so try not to leave ryle and the dwarf in your proverbial dust, okay?

Redric made his preparations to the ship they would all be sailing in by sometime tomorrow. The wooden planks on deck just replaced it seemed, as if this ship had been though so extensive damage.

“No prob, though. She’s in fine shape.” He said to himself and to the three moons. Redric left his ship and headed back for the tavern, and thought no more about the man he just killed. Time to get his well earned rest.

His wooden leg’s steps echoed loudly in the night. Redric knew this treasure hunt would change everything.‘As the flame gets nearer the heart grows colder still,

Ryle grinned to himself as he watched the commotion out in the yard.

" Oh, what a fine bunch we've got with us now, Dwarf."

Ronogh, snorted and rolled over on his rickety bed. " Wha? Wuzzat, Ryle?"

Ryle pointed to the window, chuckling. The mage and the young elf were seeing to their horses outside the stable, and staring down a variety of newcomers, it seemed. A great black cat was there one minute and then wasn't, a dark-skinned woman in it's place. Ryle frowned into the nights darkness, squinting for a better look; he supposed she must be ergothian because of the dark skin, but she seemed too dark even for that sea-faring race, almost an ebony color. He shrugged and turned his attention to the far side of the yard, where a boy who didn't even look old enough to shave was swinging a bastard sword about and spouting words of magic, while a wyvern was clambering madly about in a nearby tree. Well it could've been worse. That pixie could've been out there.

Ronogh looked dumbstruck. " What's going on out there, Ryle? What should we do?"

The warrior cocked an eyebrow at his friend. "Do? I don't plan on doing anything, Dwarf. I'm tired, it's cold out, and I'm not as drunk as I'd like to be, so I think I'll go to sleep. If that pack of fools out there want to fling magics and cause a racket in the yard, that's their own affair. Me, I'd rather sleep." The warrior strode to his bed and stretched out across it with a blissful sigh.

"But..but what if they kill each other?" The dwarf stammered.

"Then they'll kill each other, dammit! I don't care, do you?" Ryle rolled over to face the wall. " Tell you what, dwarf, tomorrow, after I get a good nights sleep and have a nice big hot breakfast, I'll round up our good crew of treasure hunters. If half of 'em has killed the other half, I'll take the survivors, if they're all alive, I'll take the whole lot. But until then, I'm tired. Good night, Ronogh."

" But Ryle.."

"GOOD NIGHT, Ronogh."

THe dwarf looked to Ryle's sleeping form, then looked back to the window. He took a loooong look at his own warm bed, then took another look at the window where it WAS kind of foggy and damp.

" Well, the human makes sense, sometimes. "

The dwarf clambered in his bed and went to sleep peacefully, with a pillow over his head to drown out the sounds of spells and snarling cats.

OOC: Well, Ryle and Ronogh have retired for the night, my next post will be when they wake up in the morning. Ralo was not stupid, he planned to be on Ullen's side if a fight broke out, the wizard had an aura about him, he was confident, and Ralo did not doubt Ullen's ability to defend himself.

Ralo stepped up near Ullen and the cat woman almost unnoticed.

Ember flushed, though her fur hid the fact, she could feel her cheeks grow warm.

"My name is Ember Dionne (Pronounced Dee-ohn-nay). My father-" Her voice hitched and she swallowed hard. "My father was a black robe, He liked to...well, experiment,, and used me as his 'test subject'" She sneered, sharp teeth flashing again.

"A few years ago, my fur was tawny, not black....and my hair was a pale gold, not a deep smoke grey... these 'Changes' Started after his death. even my affinity for the wild magics have grown more acute." She paused, and nervously toyed with the fringe on the black silk sash.

"About a year ago, I found that I could literally merge with the shadows. and could move through them, for as long as nessicary, as long as they shadows where connected, no matter how slender they where" She dropped the sash and looked up.

"Recently I've been having problems separating myself from theose shadows. It's as if I am beoming one....I don't know what to do. Sometimes it feels as though the shadows themselves are reaching for me, calling me..."

She stopped and took a shuddering breath. "I don't have much to offer you for your help Master Mage, but I can start with this." She held out her hand, small black claws glittering cruely in the moonlight. The Emerald lay in her palm. The emerald was about an inch and a half in diamiterm a perfect sphere. It was lighter around the outside, and no matter which way you turned it, a slender, cats-eye slit of dark green was in the center. A fine silver wire was wrapped around it in a spiral holding the gem with a hook at the top for a chain.

Redric walked into the inn after looking over the newcomers with a gleam in his eye. He left his worries at the port and when the storms come, is when he would worry again.

"If this treasure is true, than I shall never be in debt again." The Ergothian spoke silently to himself.

He took another mug of ale up to his room where he pulled out his journal. He wrote of the happenings of the day: what happened according to him and what his thoughts were of the days to come.

Redric took another long swig of ale and laid down on the hard-cushioned bed. His leg still pained him but the ale slowly took that away.‘As the flame gets nearer the heart grows colder still,

Ralothryall decided to leave Ullen and this Ember to their business. He would leave the black arts to those who knew what they were doing.

He would find Goldrush, feed him and then turn in.

He found his horse and also the stable boy who seemed to be holding his arm.

"Are you alright, son?"
"Yessir, just a little sore is all"
Ralo looked to his horse who was conveniently paying no attention.
"Goldrush? What did you do?" The horse ignored him
Ralo sighed "Sorry son, what did he do?
"Jus' gave me a little nip on the arm sit, thats all"
"My apologies, son, please take these for your troubles"
"Thank you, sir"
Ralo tossed the boy some coppers.

(OOC: sorry cant remember what they spend on Krynn, but i'm almost certain gold is practically worthless. Little help please)

Ralo let out another sigh and went to Goldrush after the boy had trotted off. He patted the horse on his neck. HE got the horse some hey and a drink and went back to the inn.

He by passed Ullen and Ember and made for his room. He unstrapped his armour, placed his swords next the bed and got in.

OOC: I agree, you'd have to be a renegade if you were seperate from all orders, and using a sword no less. As to that, Par, see that you're character isn't too powerful in the thread; I don't like threads with uber-charaters and munchkins... it detracts too much from the story. Every character must have strengths as well as weaknesses, and these nuances and affectations in their personality do more to develop the characters than magic powers and a plethura of skills.

As it is though, I'd think that there would be a bit of suspicion between Ullen and Gan... it's your choice if you develop it though...

IC: Ryle rolled off the straw pallet that had served as his bed, stretching in the dim waning moonlight that creeped through the tattered sheet covering the window. He swept the sheet aside with a bored gesture and gazed down into the muddy courtyard.

" Hmph," Ryle raised his eyebrows and grinned his trademark grin, " No bodies.. amazing. Well dwarf, I guesss.."

Ryle's voice died away as he saw that his friend pallet was empty. He wasn't surprised, Ronogh always seemed to be the the last one asleep and the first awake, one reason Ryle kept him as a friend. A loyal friend who never sleeps and carries an axe was never a bad thing...

The mercenary dressed himself quickly, pulling a hauberk of black ringmail over his studded leather vest and draping his favourite red cape over his broad shoulders. Before he left, he stopped to admire his reflection in the cracked mirror, and his dark features twisted into a roguish smirk. Time to go seduce the scullery-maids for an early breakfast. He grabbed his weapons belt on the way out, heavy with the weight of sword and dirk, and buckled it about him on the way down the rickety stairs.

Ryle strode into the common-room quickly, purposefully slamming the dor behind him so as to startle the snoozing night-clerk into watchfulness.

"Have the others of my party wakened and sent to the yard, clerk. And send one of the girls out here with breakfast for me and the dwarf. Melinda, perhaps..." THe fighter rubbed his chin and smirked at the memory of the pretty young woman, a woman he'd come to know quite intimately in his week or so at the Inn.

" Si...Sir." The clerk stammered, rubbing sleep from his eyes hurriedly. "Your friend..."

"Is in the stables, correct?" The clerk nodded, and Ryle waved dismissively. "He'll be back in before long.... Well, is there something wrong?" The sellsword slammed a leather gloved hand onto the desk. " Get moving and wake my party!!"

Ryle watched the skinny young man scurry up the stairs, chuckling, then reached under the countertop to grab a bottle of dark red wine. Redric fell hard from his bed to the cracked and wooden floor. Too much ale, he thought.

He glanced at the window, the sun's rays barely noticable. He got up, and having trouble with his wooden leg, walked to the window. He pulled the curtains. It looked like it might rain. A terrible thought to a sailor, but nonetheless an expectancy.

He washed a bit and got dressed. He packed his few things and headed downstairs.

There in the common room was Ryle. He didn't seem to like to be kept waiting. Redric sat to the table next to him and nodded a stale greeting.

Ryle nodded his approval to the captains statement, pushing the wine bottle toward the man as he spied Ullen and Ralo approaching the table.

" We leave as soon as possible. Once we've broken our fast and saddled the horses, I mean to make for the docks." The fighter tapped his finger on the table. " Quick and direct. I don't feel like paying any taxes to that mad aurak, and I'm sure you all feel the same. If you see any guardsman, ignore them and keep riding. Reric," he looked towards the sailor," you'll lead us to your fair ship." He started to lean back when he noticed Ullen nodding to a female half-hidden in the doorway. The figure disappeared as soon as he looked at it, and Ryle turned to grin wryly at the Black Robe.

" Bringing along a pleasant little distraction for yourself, mage?" The fighter raised an eyebrow and motuioned to the doorway.... "If at first you don't succeed...... destroy all evidence that you tried."

Ullen's eyes froze over, his face darkend. "Keep your obscence comments to yourself Ryle.....there are not many whom could say they have survived making lurd gestures towards a mage of my order....you would simply be a name to the list...for your information, i have agreed to aid her in a small matter, of which is not your concern...well...not until this treaure hunt is over with.", he turned sharply on his heels and walked to his steed, saddling the beast, he trotted a short distance, and then stopped, pulling the hood up to cover his seething face.Come see my dragonlance rp:

Ralothryall finished his breakest and went to prepare his horse. The stableboy was uninjured this time thankfully. He met up with the rest of the group. He spied Ryle and walked over to him

"I think you touched a nerve with Ullen"

Ryle smirked back, tightening the straps on his destriers saddle. " His feelings are the least of my concerns. Another person means a smaller share of treasure for the rest of us, and it's never a good idea to bring a female on the road." The fighter grimaced, looking serious for once. " There's too much that can happen to a girl on the road. She's going to have to beware of everyone around her, including her own companions. They may be all good, disciplined men but they're still men, and sometimes after a battle men forget Law and morals and think of nothing but ale, slaughter and flesh."

His horse saddled, the dark-haired mercenary swung up into the saddle and peered around for Ronogh, he spied him in the back of the yard and shouted.

" Ronogh, have that pack mule rigged up as soon as possible, I want to leave in as short a time as possible."

He looked down at the young elflord once more, his usually dancing brown eyes now a brooding dark.

" I was an officer in the war Ralo, for both sides, and I've seen some of the worst that men can do. Now our mage over there may have absolutely no intentions toward that lass, but in the end he gets the same choice as I give all the men I lead... He can keep his head cool and disciplined, or," He patted the hilt of the well-used bastard sword," He can lose it."

Ryle looked about the yard slowly for a minute, then urged his horse into an easy walk. As he neared the Inn's open gate he stopped and turned to eye his company.

" Saddle your horses, We're leaving."

Redric saddled his black mare and followed them. He was last in line but that didn't matter, he kept mostly to himself. It was hard riding a horse with his peg leg and all but he had praticed many times.

Ralothryall looked at Ryle
"Wise words indeed, my friend, spoken by a wise man. I shall, as the saying goes, follow you to the belly of the beast." Ralo smiled at Ryle then returned to Goldrush and saddled up.

He patted the horses neck and leaned down "Do behave yourself this time, won't you?"

Ralo trotted after Ryle and the rest of the party."Why do people run from me?" - Ralph, proceeds to pee his pants

OOC: Okay, I'm just going to assume that everyone is now following Ryle and Ronogh through the streets....

IC: The warrior rode briskly down the muddy streets, his head held high to see keep sight of the masts that bobbed over the houses like a floating forest. Remembering something, the warrior twisted in the saddle and looked back along the straggling column of his companions.

" Redric. Up here, I've need of you." Ryle watched as the one-legged seamen urged his mount into a canter and rode up to meet him.

" Point the way to your vessel good captain. I must confess I have a somewhat limited knowledge of Flotsams docks." Ryle turned to view teh road once more, and was taken aback when he spied a line of guardsmen tramp out into the middle of the rain-sodden path. Wheeling his horse, he watched as more of the green-scale clad guards clambered out from the alleys and set up a defensive line behind the last of his companions. THey were surrounded.

"Shit." Ryle spat, then turned as he heard a voice speaking his name.

" Well, well. If it isn't me old friend Brennick, come back for a visit."

Ryle turned to stare coldly at a thick-necked bear of a man in the center of the guards line. A ragged orange beard spilled onto the front of his breastplate like flames licking at the mans chin.

The swordsman snorted. " I'm not your friend, Angreth. Nor is Ronogh for that matter." Ryle gestured to his friend. The dwarf simply growled and laid his axe across his lap.

"No of course yer not me friend. Ye were'nt in the war, when ye kicked me out of the regiment, and ye're not now, now that I'm a respected, high-ranking city official." A guard behind Angreth laughed, and the red-bearded brute laid him low with a vicious backhand.

Ryle paid no attention. " What is it you want, Angreth?"

"Want? oh it's the Water Prophet who want's it, Ryle, not me, I assure you. It's seems his holiness has laid down a fine for adventurers leaving the city, 'specially former Dragonarmy scum like ye..."

"We fought for the solamnics as well, Angreth, You know that. What is this fine?"

"Well, he says that tha fine can be either 10,000 steel..."

"Bloody Outrageous!" Ronogh went red in the face as he interrupted the guardsman.

".... or any maps that ye might be carrying. His Holiness seems to have took up a interest in cartography lately." The Guard Captain grinned fiercely. " What's yer answer, mercenary?"

Ryle looked back at his companions, meeting each of their eyes in turn. Turning back to the guards, he drew his sword in a swift blinding movement and raised it above his head.

"Here's my answer, coward. RIDE THEM DOWN!!"

Ryle spurred his horse into a gallop, tearing into the ill-trained guards like a wolf loose among hens. His sword whistled downward. A shriek answered it as it came back dripping crimson. He spun his mount in a circle, throwing off the few militia-men who were gutsy enough to try to pull him down. A mace whistle in toward him and he batted it a way with his blade. A helmed head rose up near his stirrup and he lashed out with a booted foot. He heard Ronogh behind him, chanting a Dwarven war song as he dropped axe-blows at the milling crowd of guards like bladed rain. The mercenary spun once more, looking to see how his newfound comrades were faring...

Redric reacted quickly, he thought the guards were after him for killing the half-ogre. He drew a scimitar and flashed in the crisp morning air. He sought a target and started for work.

This one was easy and the man fell before giving up a good fight. The next was a little harder. The man blocked his blows, but Redric was having trouble balancing himself on his horse. The guard sliced his arm, but it only was a small cut against the shoulder. He felt the warm blood as it went to heal the wound.

He angered by this and Redric went in for the kill. Faster and harder blows now nearly toppling the guard from his steed. Redric found an opening and went for it. Blood gushed from the guard side and he fell hard to the ground.

Redric smiled... he still had it...

OOC:Thanks for the action, it was getting kinda boring...‘As the flame gets nearer the heart grows colder still,

Ralothryall drew a single rapier from its sheath and urged goldrush toward the men. One soldier came running at Ralo and received a boot in the face for his troubles. Ralo swung his legs around in the saddle and now faced the rear end of his horse. He sprang off the horse into the midst of the action, drawing his second rapier as he leapt into the air.

Ralo landed lightly on his feet in front of two soldiers, one with a mace, the other a longsword. The man with the mace lunged at him. Ralo easily parry the lunge with the blade in his left hand and in the same movement spun and sliced at the mans hamstring with his second blade. The man dropped, crippled but alive.

Ralothryall ducked the oncoming attack from the second man, intended to decapitate Ralo. Ralo's blade found the mans ribs as he ducked low. He knocked the sword from the mans hand and smashed the pommel of his sword into the face of the man. He too went down, unconscious but he would live.

Ralothryall spun and looked for his next adversary..."Why do people run from me?" - Ralph, proceeds to pee his pants

Ullen too brought his steed into a spur. A whispered word and one of the guards reeled back, choking on black vomit. Another word and two burst into flames. OOC: This Right here is what you call "downsizing"....

Ic: The Mercenary charged back into the melee, trying to save what members he could. IT was horrible, a slaughter; Ryle shook his head, eyes widening in shock. These people where being slaughtered like Hogs at Yuletide. Blood shot into the air like spouts from a dying whale, while gore and dust mingled like a red stew. As he watched, the young man, Gart struggled to pull a bastard sword our from a shoulder scabbard. HE was too small, too weak and too slow. A bearded guardsman cleft his arm from his body before he could draw, then cut off his scream with a lightning quick garrote.. Garts head lolled like an abandoned doll, his dead-fish eyes staring accusingly at Ryle.

To one side he spied the black robe chanting furiously from atop his steed with that cat-woman lurking beneath. Fire and shadow roared from Ullens hands until a well thrown mace shoved the spells, and most of his face, back down his throat. The cat dove for the men and received a chest full of bolts for her valour. With a piercing yowl that shifted into a sobbing scream, the shredded fur of the panther melted to reveal a dying, naked woman bleeding into the churning mud. She kicked as a trio of wild-eyed men dragged her off into a woodshed.

Ryles world blurred with the frustrated tears that filled his eyes. His fingers ached from the death grip he had on his sword. With a half-mad bellow he leapt from his horse and tore into a knot of soldiers harrying Ronogh, slashing without reason, without care. He lopped the arm off a spearman, spun quickly to parry the attack of a mace-wielder. The mercenary bull rushed the man to the ground and stepped on his throat as he attacked another, thrusting his dagger into his stomach, then gouging at his eye when he didn't fall. WHy didn't he fall? How could he keep fighting with a dagger in his gut? All Ryle could do was keep ripping and tearing at that eye, that hateful staring eye...

The eye. Ryle backed up in shock as he realized it. The eyes weren't normal, they were tinged with a pale green, locked straight ahead instead of moving like a normal mans would. He quickly scanned the street. All of the men were the same, eyes glowing strangely, feeling no pain. One blonde giant had an axe-wound that threatened to drop his head from it's perch, but still he hacked at a obviously tiring Ronogh. Ryle, shook his head, whatever was going on, he wanted no more part of it.

The mercenary dashed to his horse." DWARF!! On you horse! Run! Get to the Docks!! YOu too, Stick-Leg!!!" He slapped the dwarf when the diminuitive warrior rushed in to help Ralo, who was surrounded by a ring of methodically chopping soldiers. "Leave the Rest!! There"s no time!! RUN!!!"

The three sped towards the rotten splendour of Flotsams Dockside, leaving the nightmare behind to lick at the heels of their minds....

OOC: NOw. That slaughter meant that there is now an opening for a few characters in this thread. Be warned, though, that the characters are currently in a dead-out run to the docks, so be creative in joining. Or wait. I do encourage new people to hop in. "Who the hell was that psycho!" the warrior pounded on his saddle. "Ronogh! If any more goddamn peasants jump in our way, you have my full permission to lay 'em under!!!"

Ronogh nodded fiercely, then turned his shaggy pony towards the left of the mud street. A 4 foot crone was hopping from foot to foot, jabbering, " I'm a Monkey! Yes I am! I can Fly i can! look at me! I'm a Flying Monkeyman! Tralalalalalala-SLACK!! gurgle gurgle..." The gibbering oldster shrieked out a gurgle of blood as Ronoghs axe tore off the lower half of her face.

"Ryle! I got one Ryle!" The dwarf gleefully waved his bloody crescent axe over his head.

The mercenary looked back and chuckled wryly. " Good one Dwarf. But you only need to kill the ones that get in our way!"

The dwarf frowned in consternation. "Oh. Sorry." He looked back as the flailing crone was rapidly dissapearing under a hissing swarm of stray cats. " Oh well, that one annoyed me anyway."
