Veric Strongsheild walked the chill halls of his father's castle with contempt. There was little that upset Veric, but his father was one. The old man had been on his case since Veric was a young teen about joining the Knights. "I don't want to join the Knights, Father. That life isn't for me!" But his father had only laughed and continued his tirade about the honor of the Knighthood. Now that Veric was in his early twenties, his father's "talks" had been more aggrivating than ever.

Veric came to a thin arrowslit that looked out over the valley that surrounded Castle Strongsheild. It was late summer, the grass was still brown from the lack of water. Soon fall would be upon them, the rain would start, and the thin trickling streams would burst into full force. That was the time of year that Veric loved. He enjoyed watching the rain fall from the sky, he loved to see mother nature in full force.

But Veric was not a weakling by any means. He knew how to handle a sword. He had trained with the other squires since he was a young boy. He knew the rules of war, he knew how to parry and thrust. When it came down to it, Veric knew his weapons.

"Father...Old Iron Underpants...What would you do if I left? Would you still think of me as your son? Probably not, but I can only be pushed so far." Veric said, watching as a large stag romped across the open fields.

Veric walked down the long steps that led down the east tower of the Castle. He took his time, not looking forward to his training this morning. When he reached the bottom of the steps, only the large wooden door stood between him and the practice area. With a sigh, Veric pushed open the door and stepped outside to the sounds of heavy breathing and dull swords clanging against each other.....

Kyliana sighed as she folded another bed linen and placed it on top of an already growing stack. It seemed that her days were filled with nothing but folding bed linens, helping the cook in the castle kitchen, sweeping floors, and serving food to the Strongshield family. There was rarely time for fun or, as Kyliana liked to do occasionally, daydreaming of life far away from the castle.

She had never known life outside the castle. Kyliana had been born in Castle Strongshield. Her mother had been a lady-in-waiting to the ladywife of the manor, her father one of the gardeners. Raised in servitude, she had rarely seen anything outside the walls of the castle except on festival days, when the servants were dismissed for the day to enjoy the local fairs. She had always dreamed of what it would be like to travel, to see the world, meet everyone and do everything.

She folded another bed linen and picked up the stack, carrying it up the stone stairs from the laundry closet to the floors upstairs. She bypassed the first floor, which was mostly dining rooms, feasthalls, the kitchen, and various living rooms and art galleries, and continued onto the second floor, where the manor's bedrooms were situated.

Pausing by a thin window, Kyliana looked out over the valleys. The bright sunlight reflected off her blonde hair, so pale it was almost white, that ran in a long braid down her back. Her aqua blue eyes glittered in the light, and her tanned skin shimmered like gold. If only, she thought, if only I could leave, travel far away, see exotic places.

If only I could leave......

Her head jerked up suddenly as she heard footsteps down the hall. Veric, the lord of the manor's son, was walking down the hall, apparently deep in thought. Kyliana gathered up her laundry and hurried further down the hallway into the shadows, preparing to open the door to a bedroom so that she could put away the laundry. Veric paused at the same window she had just vacated, and it seemed that he had that faraway look in his eyes that Kyliana knew so well. She nearly approached him, but did not want to interrupt his train of thought. Besides, it would be unseemly, a servant girl speaking directly to the lord of the manor as if he was a close friend.

He's trapped as I am, she thought with a slight smile. If only.....

It was late afternoon before Veric was finally allowed to rest. His muscles burned like fire. The master of arms, Percival, thought it was entertaining to see the squires struggle. His most famous phrase, "A knight can't lay down his sword in battle because he is tired". So all the squires could do was complain, and even that didn't accomplish anything.

Veric said good-bye to his comrades, then entered the main keep of the castle. His body was lathed in sweat, his hair hanging in wet strands to his muscled shoulders. He was a handsome young man. He had drawn his share of eyes. Veric didn't find himself attractive though. He saw himself as a young version of his father. He had long black hair fell in wavy strands to his shoulders. He had peircing gray eyes. People often found it difficult to look directly in them, but he had inherited the unique colored eyes from his father. His hawk-like nose is what dominated his face. It didn't take away from his look, enhanced them really. But that isn't how Veric saw it.

He walked up the stairs slowly, allowing his muscles to stretch out and relax. He made it to his room, but only after he noticed someone shadowing him. He turned and looked quickly. It was Kyliana. A young woman that Veric had known since he was a young. She saw him looking, and quickly took a side hall, walking away from him. Kyliana was always around the corner wherever he went. If Veric didn't know better, he might have thought she had feelings for him. But Veric wasn't that lucky. His father would never let him be with her, but she was so beautiful...He would defy his father for her.

He went to his chambers and bathed quickly and changed into some black leather pants, with a white cotton shirt. He kept it unlaced, it was still hot for this late in the summer. It wasn't long before there was a knock on his door. A servant, Veric noted when he opened the door. Thoughts of Kyliana would have to wait, his father wanted to see him.... Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.

OOC: This thread is blessed.

IC:

Meanwhile, in a forest near the castle.

An ogre stared curiously at the mysterious object in front of him. "This is what?"

"Ah... an enchanted item!" His partner, the black-robed mage, Unca Farker, said, lifting that object up. It was an old underpants made of iron. Runes were etched on the underpants. The mage slowly read the runes... "This underpants belongs to... the infamous knight Old Iron Underpants! It is called... the Underpants of Doom..."

"GIMME! ME WANT THIS!" The ogre snatched the magical underpants from Unca Farker's hands.

He put wore it on his head.

BLAM!

The ogre's head exploded.

The black-robed mage, shocked by the gruesome scene before him, suffered a heart attack and died. Eliar spat in rage and clapped his hands twice, ten male dwarves in pink dresses pop out from the floorboards and dance a graceful ballet.

Zap you with my lightning,

Radu sat in the chair to the side of Old Strongshield. The Lord's son had been summoned, the old man pushed his son far to hard, he was feeling his age and is son was not what he had expected. The boy would inherit the castle, title and lands, and in the not so distant future if the signs were right. On the other hand Veric had the potential to make the Strongshield family a real power. Though what he would make of Radu's role if he knew the truth of it the spymaster had no idea, it must grate a little though, only a year older than Veric, Radu appeared to be a close advisor. And there was....the other thing. Radu was shaken out of his train of thought as the door swung open and the old man's strong voice boomed out,

"Ah Veric my son, come in..."

Radu's sharp eyes caught the faint image of a certain maid in the courtyard below, nothing happened in the castle that Radu knew not of, and Kyliana and Veric's long distance affection was as transparent as the window he was looking through. But then again, Radu had his years of training and his...other talents. But that was for later contemplation, right now he had to listent ot the old man and his son......"Ah, they have a cave troll....."

Kyliana quickly ducked into a side hall. He saw me! He saw me staring at him, she thought, mortified. But, he is rather handsome....

Kyliana finished delivering the linens to the bedrooms and returned for a short time to her bedchambers. She had been working ages on a ballgown made of dark blue velvet. She had worked for six months to buy the velvet, and the castle seamstress had donated the thread. Kyliana had gotten word from some of the higher servants, the lord's attendants, that he was going to hold a grand ball this evening. The servants had been working all day to decorate the great feasthall, cook various foods, and scrub the castle clean. A few of the servants who had only minor duties had been given leave to attend the ball, on the agreement that they found something suitable to wear and didn't try to talk to the nobility that would be attending. Kyliana's heart soared as she beheld her handmade gown, given months of love and care. Maybe even Veric would fall in love with her, thinking her a princess from some foreign land, and sweep her off her feet....she shook her head, as if to clear away cobwebs. Veric would never notice her. He was a noble man, a lord's son, and would become the lord of the manor when his father passed away.....and she was just a lowly servant, her life devoted to servitude.

If only she could leave........Peace and terror all in one, My future life has just begun.....

Veric entered his father's throne room with his back straight and his chin out. He would never let his father see that he was afraid. He looked at the large man who was resting in the gilded throne. The man was just a larger an older version of Veric himself, sure there were differences. But even a blind man could see that they were father and son.

The large chamber was filled with the lesser nobles, peasants, sellswords, all of which came to petition to the King. His father always did this, berated him in front of people he absolutely despised. Veric looked over and noticed Radu sitting along the side of his father. "Sitting in the shadows," Veric mused. That one was always in the shadows.

Veric walked until he was a few feet from the steps that led up to the throne. Everything his father owned was extravagent, the throne was no exception. It had rubies, diamonds, and other precious gems inlaid into it. Even his fathers clothes had rare gems sewn into the fabric. Veric gave his father a stiff-backed bow and knelt on his knee.

"You wished to see me father?" Veric asked, his voice hinting at contempt.

The young man didn't know how long he was standing there. But by the time he left, his cheeks were red with rage and embarrassment. Why did his father find pleasure in bashing him down. As he looked towards Radu, the man was eying him, like always. He thought he saw a small smile on the man's face, but whether he was enjoying this, or pitying him, Veric couldn't tell.

The meeting was the same as they always were. But this one was a little different. He was told this time that he would be taking the last test for the Knighthood in a few short days. When he had argued, his father had only stood up to his full height, which was largly over six feet. He looked imposing, even to his son. Lord Brightsheild had yelled and ranted, and basically pushed his son down to the enjoyment of everyone in the chamber.

"Damn him." Veric thought to himself as he returned to his chambers. He stopped at another window and looked out over the courtyard. Merchants and wagons were still rolling in. The sun was going down, and they wanted to be safely inside the walls. There had been ogre raids lately, it seemed that no one was safe.

His eyes shifted a little, and he noticed a shape in the servants windows across the way. A smile found a way to his lips. Kyliana was dancing around her small chambers, holding a dress up to her body as she swayed back and forth. "Maybe I will ask her for a dance at the ball," Veric thought. "But what if she rejected me, especially in front of all those people.."

"No, I am the heir to this castle...She will dance with me...I am a Brightsheild." But somehow the thought of his lineage didn't make him feel any better... Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.

Thorinn entered the city on the outskirts of Castle Strongshield from a nearby forest. He glanced at the castle looming over the large city, and "Hmphed". He knew his dwarven brethren could do so much better than that.

The dwarf walked slowly through the city, rattling his battle axe attached to the back of his leather clothing. He had wondered why the lord of this castle had summoned him. The dwarf was a reknown warrior, many people knew his name, yet he had heard nothing of any battles in this area. He shook his head, rustling his black beard.

He passed the shops and homes of the city, getting suspicious glances from the nearby citizens. He disregarded them, knowing that everywhere he went, he would get those from humans.

He finally reached the gates seperating Castle Strongshield from the city and was stopped by one of the nearby guards.

"Halt, dwarf! What means do you have to be here?"

Thorinn looked at the human and gave him a letter, "I have been called by the Lord Radu, for whatever purpose I dont know."

The guard grunted and let the dwarf pass through the gates.

The dwarf walked before the great doors of the castle and stopped, still wondering why. He thought he might as well find out, so he entered the castle.The Time is Near....No More Darkness...The Flames Scar the Night...The Fire Still Burns...My Future is Clear...A Date With The Devil...A Dance With His Mistress...My Path is Chosen....

OOC;Just a point, Radu is by no means Lord stronshield, he is his spymaster. But just assume that I summoned you anyway...
IC;
Radu sat at his window, his sharp eyes flickered over the courtyard below, the castle servents bustling around preparing the ball. Radu looked down at his fine tunic and cloak, the old lord had insisted that he attend the ball and had pressed Radu to get some new clothes more fitting, although he hadn't managed to convince him to wear any colour other than black. Behined him the dwarven warrior Thorinn stood in his full battle armour, waiting for the spymaster to speak, when he did it was with a soft spoken voice, with the faintest hint of an odd accent,

"You have a reputation Thorinn, I am hoping that you will live up to this reputation. In an effort to ensure that you do I have pandered to a steryotype."

He pushed a chest across the floor twords the dwarf's feet where it sprang open revealing heaps of gold.

"The first payment. What I require you to do for the moment is this, you will go to the ball tonight, make sure you wear......well, whatever dwarves wear at a formal occasion. Whilst you are there you will be introduced to the lord's son Veric, I have a strong suspicion that he doesn't intend to remain here long. You are to make sure you are caught up in whatever cock-eyed scheme he comes up with, and that he comes to no harm once he does leave. I will be attempting to facilitate the epartures of certain other members of the household, the boy needs an adventure......he's going to rule here one day and it will do him good to get his wonderlust out of his system now."

The spymaster's strangely feral eyes glanced at Thorinn,

"So, is it a deal?""Ah, they have a cave troll....."

It was the night of the ball. Veric was clothed in a black leather pants and a white sillk doublet. He had his long black hair pulled back into a tight ponytail. Looking at himself in the mirror, he was suprised with what he saw. He had always thought of himself as no more than a boy, that is what his father told him afterall. But right now, he looked like a man. He adjusted the ceremonial sword that hung from his hip, and with a sigh, left his chambers and headed in the direction of the ballroom.

He could hear the noise long before he reached the ball. The sounds of marriement were echoing throughout the halls. He could hear people laughing and yelling. He could hear the bards telling their tales. He could even hear the "oo's and ahh's" as the tumblers did their tricks.

"Just an appearance...nothing more." Veric said to himself. "As soon as my father sees me at this thing. I will slip out the back and be on my way. I have a bag stashed in the stables with extra clothes and some weapons. I should be able to get out without anyone noticing me. Even the guards will be relaxed tonight."

The servants opened the large wooden doors and the sounds fell over Veric like a wave. It almost made him sick. All of these lords and ladies were so fake. All of them were just hoping to get in good with the King. A lot of good it would do them anyway.

As he walked in, people ran to greet him. It wasn't everyday that Veric mingled with the lesser lords. They asked him questions, most of which were condesending. They laughed and tittered about Lord Brightsheild's talk earlier. There was little that they felt was sacrosanct.

Veric noticed his father surrounded by dozens of the younger lords. All of them fawning and giggling at his attempts of humor. He hadn't been noticed yet. Radu was there as well. Standing behind the King, but the man had a clear view of everything that was happening in the ballroom. A dwarf stood next to him. Complete in ceremonial armor that shun in the candle light. Radu nodded in Veric's direction and nudged the dwarf. The dwarf looked in his direction and nodded slight. Veric nodded back, and then stepped towards his father.

That is when he saw her...Kyliana. She was resplendant in her gown. All of the light seemed to focus directly on her. For a moment, it was hard for Veric to swollow. He looked up and noticed Radu looking at him, a small smile splayed across his face. "Does he know?" Veric thought..

"Come here, boy!" He heard his father bellow.

He had been noticed. It wouldn't be long now.. Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.

Thorinn had, of course, accepted the deal, due to the large amount of gold.

At the night of the ball he was nudged by Radu, and he saw Veric. Thorinn kept his eyes on the lord's son very carefully, and barely noticed when Radu left. He just stood there, blocking out everything else and only seeing Veric. He noticed the lord's son kept glancing in the direction of a room. And, the dwarf also noticed Veric eyeing a woman.

The dwarf stood and waited for Veric to come over to his father, so they could be properly introduced.The Time is Near....No More Darkness...The Flames Scar the Night...The Fire Still Burns...My Future is Clear...A Date With The Devil...A Dance With His Mistress...My Path is Chosen....

Veric calmly walked over to where his father was entertaining his guests. The man was boistrous, something that Veric had never liked. He waded through the crowd of lords and ladies until he came to stand next to his father.

"So glad you could finally attend," his father said, draping a think arm around Veric's shoulders.

Veric nodded, "I had to get ready, Father." He tried to act civil, but he held the hilt of his sword in a white-knuckled grip. Lord Brightsheild just smacked his son on the shoulders and made a joke in his expense to the other lords.

Veric noticed that Radu was gone. That really didn't suprise him. That man was more sneaky than any he had known. Veric had suspicions about what Radu's employment really was, but it had never been confirmed. But if he were to ever trust that man, he would have to have some reasons why.

Veric looked down and noticed the Dwarf standing next to him. He nodded his greetings and shook the dwarfs rough hand. After exchanging pleasentries, the music started and the dancing began...But Veric's mind was elsewhere. Why was this dwarf here? Where was Radu? How was Kyliana?.

Kyliana entered the ballroom hesitantly, staying on the fringes of the crowd so as not to attract attention to herself. She had painstakingly braided her hair into a shimmering golden crown that encircled her head. Her lips and cheeks were tinged the pink of summer roses with the juice of wild berries, her eyes lined with a bit of kohl that the lady of the manor had tired of and thrown in the garbage. A shimmery silver powder that she
had bought from an herbalist’s shop was dusted over her eyelids. On her long, slender neck glittered a slender silver choker, studded with small chips of sapphire - a family heirloom that her mother had given to her on her sixteenth birthday. A silver ring of beautiful leaves and vines - a symbol of her father’s half elven heritage and cheaply made, but lovingly crafted - decorated a slender finger. She had borrowed a small silver bracelet from one of Lady Strongshield’s more well-off ladies-in-waiting. Kyliana’s dress rippled as she walked, the short sleeves draping off her tanned shoulders, the train sweeping the floor behind her.

Suddenly, there he was - Veric. He looked the part of the noble, strong knight’s son. Kyliana's aqua eyes glittered and her heart skipped a beat as he raised his proud head and his eyes met hers. She blushed modestly and tried to look away, but his eyes, always so dark and captivating, held her like a moth to a flame. The crowds seemed to part around him, and
time seemed to slow to an agonizing pace as he began to walk towards her.

“Come here, boy!” she heard Lord Strongshield bellow.

Veric looked at her once last time, and, pulling his gaze away, obeyed his father’s command.

Kyliana was disappointed, but at the same time, relieved. What do I do, she thought. I’m not permitted to speak to him in front of the nobility, and to...to maybe even dance with him? Certainly not! He would be shunned by his family, and the nobles would look down their noses at the knight’s son who cavorted with the servant girl. She sighed with sadness. Oh well, she thought sadly, maybe one of the kitchen boys will agree to dance.Peace and terror all in one, My future life has just begun.....

After shaking hands with Veric, Thorinn asked the lord's son to step aside and talk to him.

After they were in a secluded spot, the dwarf spoke, grinning, "So, where do you plan on going, Lord Veric? I have heard you were planning to leave, and I thought I might join you on your journey, so to speak."

Veric ignored the music that began playing in the backround. The lords and ladies all ran off to find partners for the ball. Veric ignored all this and looked down at the dwarf with what one could only call, open astonishment.

"Going somewhere? Wh..what do you mean? I'm not planning on going anywhere." He could tell by the smile on the dwarf's face, that he had been discovered. "You won't tell my father will you?" The dwarf only looked at him from under his heavy eyebrows.

"You..you must excuse me... I'm not feeling to good.." Veric quickly excused himself from the dwarf and walked around the walls of the ballroom, carefully avoiding his father and the women who would ask him for a date. Now his my chance, he thought to himself.

He quietly slipped out the rear door, looking one last time around the ballroom. His father was dancing with his mother, but plenty of other women were waiting for the honor of the dance. It wasn't till he was just about to turn away that he noticed, Kyliana. Their eyes met. Everything else seemed to turn black except her. More words were said in that look than could have possibly transpired in a dozen coversations. She knew him better than anyone, and he knew her as well. Even though they had only shared a few words in their many years of knowing of each other.

Veric sighed and quickly turned and ran from the keep on his way to the stables. It wasn't long before he heard the clomping of dwarven books behind him, or the wisps of a ballroom dress following closely behind him... Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.

Thorinn laughed as he saw Veric run. He knew where he was going. The dwarf waited till Veric had been gone for a while, then he noticed the woman Veric was eyeing earlier follow him. The dwarf glared and was now very curious.

Thorinn hurriedly ran towards the stables, attempting to dodge the ballroom dancers, bumping into some. He made his way into the halls, cursing his boots for the loud noise they made. He vaguely hoped the girl wouldnt notice.

He reached the stables and noticed a flicker of a torch light coming from them. He saw the girl outside of it and Veric slipping inside. He quietly made his way towards the building.

The world seemed to stand still as Veric gazed into Kyliana's eyes from across the room one last time as the knight's son slipped out the back door, unnoticed. She wanted very much to follow him, but something, some strange feeling, held her back, tied to this place that she had known all her life.

Kyliana steeled her will. Her ties to this place were severed in that moment that Veric looked into her eyes. She saw the purpose in his gaze, the hunger for adventure. Her spirit longed to fly free of this life of servitude. Kyliana ached to make a better life for herself far away, in some exotic land across the continent. In that moment, she had made her decision. She slipped from the ballroom, taking the same route that Veric had walked only moments before.

She strayed from the main hall, taking a side hall where a small niche was carved into a shadowy corner. This place, this shadowed corner where no servant dusted the statues, considered so far out of the way from the main keep that it wasn't expected that any guest should ever see it, was where Kyliana hid her most treasured belongings. The servant's quarters were regularly searched, as some of the more lowly and dishonest staff would routinely steal small items from the Lord's family and their guests. In this corner, no one thought to search, and so Kyliana kept all of the things she had collected and earned over the years. A well worn leather travel pack, one of a set cast off by a hunter from the village that her father had been friends with, concealed a small pouch of steel, silver, and copper coins she had earned by doing errands for people in the villiage. Travel clothes - a pair of finely made leather leggings she had bartered from an elven leatherworker who was passing through, in exchange for cuttings and slips of rare flowers and herbs that her father grew in his small private patch of garden; a matching leather bodice lined with white wolf fur along the neckline and the bottom hem; a white cotton swordsman's shirt, with billowy sleeves and laced at the neck; a pair of brown laced leather boots; an old wooden hairbrush, well-used and in good repair; spare leather laces; and various odds and ends that would be useful for travel. She slung the leather pack over her shoulder and continued down the hall toward the stables.

Pale lamplight shone from inside the stables. The servants had all either retired for the night or were attending the ball, so the stables were empty at this dark hour. Kyliana peeked in through the door. Veric was securing his packs to the saddle of his large stallion, intent on quickly finishing his work and being on his way. He didn't notice Kyliana standing in the doorway, but the soft rustle of her velvet gown caused him to glance her way.

"I....I'm sorry," she said quietly. "I didn't mean to interrupt you...I mean...."

Veric just smiled. "I knew you'd come," he said softly.Peace and terror all in one, My future life has just begun.....

"I knew you would come," Veric said with a smile. His heart was beating wildly in his chest. She had come, he knew it the moment they shared that look. Veric whistled softly and a horse behind him sniffed louldly. He reached around and pulled on the reins. Out of the shadows came a silver gelding, with a clean white mane. "For you," Veric smiled and held his hand out to Kyliana.

He helped her up into the padded saddle. After adjusting her bags onto their harnesses, he made ready to climb onto his horse. Charger was a massive beast. He had been Veric's horse since he was just a boy. They had almost a kinship with each other. Charger knew an adventure was coming, and subsequently was tough to keep in control. After a moment of struggling, Veric finally managed to calm the beast.

"The horse is yours to name," Veric smiled and looked in Kyliana's direction. "She will serve you faithfully, have no worries about that."

It was then that a figure cleared his throat, and the dwarf entered the stables. "I am coming with you, boy." The dwarf said with a smile and shouldered his pack.

"I don't know your story, Dwarf. But you haven't betrayed me. And for that I thank you." Veric nodded his compliance to the Dwarf.

Kyliana looked uncertainly at Veric, nudging her horse closer to his. "It will be all right," Veric assured her, as he rested his hand on her soft fingers.

She smiled at him. That smile seemed to be Veric's sun. He returned the smile and cleared his throat, not wanting to put on a show for the dwarf. "If you must come, Dwarf. Get your mount so we can be going."

It was then that a shadow seperated itself from the wall. Radu entered the stables with a smile.... Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.

Kyliana smiled as Veric led the silver mare into the flickering lamplight. The horse nuzzled her neck lovingly. Her heart swelled with joy when Veric took her hand and helped her into the saddle, tying her packs onto the harnasses behind her.

"The horse is yours to name," Veric said to her. "She will serve you faithfully, have no worries about that."

Kyliana thought for a moment as Veric made ready to mount his horse. "I think I shall call her Valthana, " she said. "In my father's land, the name means 'she who dances in starlight'. It will honor this evening."

From the shadows, the gruff dwarf cleared his throat. "I am coming with you, boy," he said, with a bright smile through his full, long beard. He fingered his battle axe lovingly, as if fantasizing about the battles they would encounter on their journey.

Something was strange about this dwarf, Kyliana thought. He has motives other than mere boredom to be accompanying us on this adventure. She nudged Valthana closer to Veric's horse, comforted by his presence.

"It will be all right," Veric assured, placing his strong hand over hers. She smiled at him and nodded her assent.

As the dwarf mounted up, Kyliana turned to Veric. Her aqua eyes met his and sparkled in the dim lamplight. "I've always dreamed of lands far away. I have never been farther than the edges of this valley. Where will we go?"

A small rustle of hay interrupted their conversation. The lord's right hand man, Radu, emerged from the shadows, a smile on his face. Kyliana shivered unconsiously, from the chill evening air and from the strange feeling emanating from the man. There was more to this lord's lackey than meets the eye....Peace and terror all in one, My future life has just begun.....

Radu looked odd in the moonlight, even more sinister and feral than nomal. After a moment the other three put it down to the wierd shadows that the man was standing in.

"Leaving so soon?"

Radu took another step towards Veric, who's horse shied away for some reason,

"You father will be so dissapointed."

A shrug and a grin that flashed incredibly white eye teeth,

"On the other hand I don't much like damceing myself, may as well keep an eye on you."

He walked back into the stable where all the horses snorted and shied away as he passed them, but the ball was too noisy for it to disturb anyone. A moment or two later he emerged riding a horse that was jet black, it was obviously a warhorse and was finley muscled. As the four began to moe thier horses out of the stables it occured to Veric that he had never seen that horse in the stables before..."Ah, they have a cave troll....."

"This isn't what I had planned," Veric thought to himself as he looked at his travelling companions. Sure he was glad that Kyliana was with him. But the Dwarf and Radu? He had never trusted the man in black fully. There was something about him. His strange appearances, his horse..what did it all mean?

The group rode long and hard. Stopping only for breaks when the horses were about to fall from exhaustion. He wanted to be as far away from the castle as he could. It would make any pursuers that should happen to follow be a long ways behind.

Veric looked over his shoulder at Kyliana. She was still wearing her ballgown that was stained and fluttering in the wind. She still looked beautiful though. She would always look that way. Then Veric's eyes drifted to Radu. The man sat straight in his saddle, eying him with that same look on his face. What was he thinking? Veric thought.

Finally, just before dawn. Veric called a stop. They led their horses into a thick grove of pine trees to rest and recooperate from the long ride. Veric helped Kyliana down from her horse and began do unsaddle and rub both of their horses down. After that was done he looked around. Kyliana stood next to him, breathing hard from the unaccustomed ride. Both Radu and the dwarf were settling their horses down.

"I will get some wood for a fire," Veric offered. "Everyone stay here where it is safe..There is no telling what is in these woods." He worked up the nerve to kiss Kyliana on the cheek, then was off into the trees. He moved silently, like so many of his father's retainers had tought him to hunt. Veric hoped he made the right decision.

"There is no turning back now," he thought to himself. He picked up peices of fallen wood in the forest, looking over his shoulder every second. He was actually out in the wild, anything could happen now.... Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.

Radu looked at the retreating back of Veric, the boy was right, no-one knew what was in the forest. But the boy would be okay, between his rapidly developing hunting skills and the...protection that Veric did not know was there. Radu looked up, they had fire but no meat, and the moon was nearly full. Radu liked to hunt by the light of the moon. But that could wait until Veric got back, in the meantime he studied Kyliana from eyes that were slitted in a pretence of sleep whilst Thorinn stood first watch near the horses.

Radu was watching Kyliana as others of his kind had watched Veric's mother. For this land was, in truth, thiers - they advised, cajoled, hinted and sometimes controled from behined the scenes of every powerful organisation, from the criminal factions to the merchant guilds right up to the Strongshields themselves.

Thier loyalty was to the land, and Veric had the potential to rule it well, but he needed training. And he would be usless to the land with the wrong type of bride. And if that happened......well it was Radu's job to make sure it didn't. On the other hand, Radu's criteria were not the same as old man Strongshield's. True enough it would arouse suspicion if Veric were to wed a serving girl, but that just ment Radu would have to ensure that Kyliana was not a serving girl by the time they returned. The spymaster continued to study her, the howls of the wolves in the woods reassuring him that Veric was safe."Ah, they have a cave troll....."

Thorinn, standing near the horses was keeping a close watch on Veric's back, while also looking around. He didnt really like the atmosphere, being used to the misty air of the mountains. The air here just didnt smell....right.

Thorinn's eyes occasionally noticed small rustles, disregarding them, figuring it was only the wind. He wasnt accustomed to the forest, even after the years of so many battles.

Then, the dwarf smelled something really foul. He heard twigs breaking and looked in the direction of the sounds. He noticed the flash of steel.

Thorinn yelled, "GOBLINS!!!!"

"GOBLINS!" Veric heard the bellow coming through the trees. His first thought was one of dread. What was he to do now? Then he pushed that feeling into the pit of his stomach and ran back towards the camp. He pushed away his fear and concentrated on everything he had been tought with the sword.

He pulled out his ceremonial sword. It was more for looks, but it still had a sharp edge on it. He burst into the clearing to the sounds of wooping and hollering of goblins. His first thought was Kyliana. He found her keeping some dirty goblins at bay with a large branch from a tree. Goblins were normally that aggressers. But when they fought in packs like this, it gave them a false since of bravery.

"Strongsheild!" Veric bellowed and rushed towards Kyliana.

He took the first goblin out with a sword through it's back before the creature even knew what had happened. Stabbing someone in the back wasn't honorable, but since when did goblins have honor?

He took off the head of another goblin, then brought his sword around to burry it into another's gut. The goblins were a weak lot, quickly frightened when the battle wasn't going there way. Veric saw the dwarf easily managing a few of the goblins. He was deadly with his battle ax, the goblins were dropping in scores around him.

Veric looked around quickly for Radu, but didn't see the mysterious man anywhere. Hopefully he was alright, Veric thought. Goblins could be nasty to prisoners. The man was probably fighting his own battles elsewhere. These thoughts almost cost Veric his life though, he heard a scream behind him and then a thunk.

He turned quickly with his sword in hand to see a comatous goblin laying on the ground. Kyliana held the bloody branch in her hand, seeming to shiver slightly. Veric cleaned off his blade and slid it back into his scabbard. He came over and took Kyliana gently in his arms and held her close.

He watched as Thorinn finished off the last of the goblins...The dwarf then cleaned off the green goblin blood and hefted his axe. "Thank you," Veric mumbled. He looked down at his body. He had a few cuts and scrapes here and there, but nothing too serious. It wasn't until then that he realized that he too was shivering.... Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.

Radu was some distance away cleaning goblin blood off his hands, why did thay have to jump them on this one night of the whole month? He finished cleaning the blood of his hands and sent several dark shaps loping back off into the wilds. He'd just have to make sure the others didn't see the bodies.

A few moments later he hauled a deer carcass into the camp,

"Food's up in a bit."

Veric turned and blustered at him,

"Where were you? We could have been killed. There were Goblins and they attacked and they.."

Radu cut in,

"Well? You dealt with them didn't you? I'm just sorry I missed the fun.""Ah, they have a cave troll....."

Ralindahl started the morning by tending to the horses, cleaning the stalls, feeding the chickens, breakfast!, exsercizing the dogs (always a chore for seven full-grown Wolfhounds), feeding the dogs, bring the horses in from the corrall and brushing them down, oats, collect the chicken eggs, lunch!

But Ralindahl never really ate lunch. He told the other stable boys he liked to eat alone, but would steal into the shadows where he let his Talent take effect. As a rat he could scurry from to the gronds unnoticed, as a Stag he could cover much more land in the forsest, and as an Eagle he could see much farther. He was usually extremely tired by the time he returned, but his little excersize in his Talent always served him well.

Tonight was the ball, and he was to help in caring for the carriages and horses that the visitng Nobles arrived in. His was not displeased, but tended to the animals with a joy the other stable boys didn't understand.

And Ralindahl didn't understand them. He had always connected more with animals than people, and perhaps having the Talent was part of it. He wasn't sure where the Talent came from, whether one of the moons, an unknown demon or goddess, or some long-lost heritage, but he thanked Palidine everyday for it.

That evening, as the ball had started, he lead a pair of gleaming white horses into the extra stalls, and happened to notice a pack lying half-hidden in a pile of hay near one of the barn dorrs. Once he had situated the horses, he went over to investigate ...

Hm ... some escape is afoot, I believe He thought, I think I should investigate ... The other stable boys were busy, and so did not notice as Ralindahl shrunk into the shadows, returning and curling up by the back as one of the large dogs. Kyliana trembled as Veric held her in his arms. The fight with the goblins had been terrifying. She had never seen a goblin before, except pictures in books in the Strongshield library. She rested her cheek on Veric's trembling shoulder, thankful for the warm arms around her.

Radu, who had disappeared mysteriously during the battle, returned to the clearing with a dressed deer carcass and began to roast it on the fire. When she was finally able to move without shaking, Kyliana extricated herself from Veric's arms with a small hint of reluctance. She was covered in green goblin blood, and her dress hung in tatters on her slender body. Her hands were blistered and bleeding from gripping the rough tree branch.

"There's a stream not far from here," she said softly to the group. "I'd like to go clean myself off."

Veric started to protest, but she shushed him with a slender finger to his lips. "I'll be fine. I think we chased off every goblin within ten miles. Besides, it would be...improper....for one of you to watch me while I bathe."

Without a backwards glance, Kyliana walked through the forest until she came to a secluded spot by the stream, where large rocks directed the sparkling, cold water into a small cascade that fell into a waist-deep, moonlit pool. Kyliana stripped off her ruined dress and laid it neatly on a nearby rock. She waded into the pool and sunk up to her chest, her tanned shoulders exposed to the cool night air. She raised her arms and unraveled the braid from her hair, letting the loose tresses cascade down her back into the chill, clean water. She ducked her head under the water and stood up, her wet hair trailing over the long, smooth lines of her back, all the way past her hips. The water dripped down her bare body like miniature diamonds sparkling in the moonlight.

A rustle in the bushes behind her told her that someone, or something, was watching her....Peace and terror all in one, My future life has just begun.....

((ooc; three years in this forum and I just made the most elementary mistake!!! I started reading this thread and loved it so much I forgot to finish the oher two pages!!! Anyway, I shall fix it accordingly ...))

Veric! Ralindahl thought in surprise as the owner of the pack returned for it. But where would Veric be going?! Ralindahl was of the same age as Veric and had more than once helped him out of scrapes when they were young kids, Ralindahl even knew of Veric's dislike of his father and the kingdom. I know Kyliana ... He continued thinking as the entourage prepared to leave, Don't know the dwarf ... Radu! That rotten scumbag must have slipped in while I was asleep! Pah! The horses were tacked, the riders mounted, and the packs secured, and then the thumping hooves vibrated through the floor onto Ralindahl's canine stomach.

Ralindahl stood and walked to the edge of the barn, watching the receeding horses in the moonlight. To bark, or not to bark ... He thought, Oh, screw it! I'm coming too! And he took out over the grounds.

~~~~~ Later that night;
Lost! I can't believe it! I'm a hound for crying out loud and I have no idea where I am!!! Well, that wasn't true, he knew a stream lead through the forest and he had been across it more than once, weaving a drunken path through the moonlight. At one point, he had heard the sounds of battle, and had started towards it, but the remainders of whoever had attacked wooshed past him and he was soon lost. Time to look for the stream again ...
It was quite a while before he relocated it, and as he approached it he got the first sight of people since he had left the castle. He crept forward, sure it was a friend, but still cautious, but when he saw who it was (and in what condition) he lost his footing with a yelp and tumbled into the stream.
Kyliana turned to see a large hound floundering clumsily in the water, two floppy ears doing their best to hide the creature's eyes as if it were embarassed to catch her bathing. The dog righted itself and tried to slink off with its tail between its legs, but tripped blindly on a rock with another surprised yelp ..."Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli, The Fellowship Of The Ring
Kashati moved closer, sniffing the air, his fine coat of black fur, moving like liquid as the muscles beneath it moved. Intelligent green eyes peered forward, with a certain amount of interest and caution. He dared not show himself, he feared people, considered them ruthless, and often un-willing to accept him. A half-beast. Standing like one of them, but with the characteristics and appearance of a wild cat.
Shroaded in the shadows, he braved to move even closer.
I know you're out there, I can smell you. Man or cat? Which are you? No matter, either way you will show yourself, even if i have to kill you first.
The spymaster leapt through the air, more like a beast than man, then Thorinn and Veric heared the muffled thud of body hitting body, followed by hissing and growling as two dark figures rolled nearer to the firelight, thier fight taking them out into the darkness for a moment, then back onto the fringes of the camp."Ah, they have a cave troll....."
Kashati had seen the man leap for him. His ears flattened, he hissed violently, showing his white sharp teeth. He thought of fleeing, but decided to fight. Lowering himself further, then bounding out of the trees, claws extended, he meet the man in mid air. Tooth and claw were both used. He hadn't the time to un-sheath his sword yet.
His wild cat cries could chill the bone. He pushed away and landed on his hunches. His hissing and soft growls never ceased as he slowly took out his sword. The moonlight glinted off silver steel, a stark contrast to his black fur.
He raised his blade and moved in. Swinging it gracefully, fluidly, as though he and it were one. The blade moved faster, passing from one hand to the other, but so swiftly it was hard to see him do it. Eventaually, the sword was but a blur.
Suddenly Kashati stopped, he looked at the man, sweat drenched his fur. Just as siddenly as he had stopped, Kashati swung the blade, causing the tip of it to brush the ground in the man's direction. As the blade followed through, a rendering sound screeched through the air, ripping up the ground as a force tore along towards the man.
It would slice him in two if he didn't move, he didn't want anyone to get hurt, it was what he wanted the least.
She turned, and melded in with the shadows of the tree, literally becoming a shadow herself, moving along the shadow of the tree, till she could feel she was closer to the treeline, where Kashati stood, and she lept out of the shadow, and crouched low against the bushes. It was silver.
Radu roared in pain as he reflexivly went into the change, he balled fist struck the huge cat with a good few more pounds of force than he had intended, sending her flying across the clearing. He bounded over to Ember, crouching protectively over her and hissed more at Radu.
He nuzzled Ember, then stood up. He realised his blade had hurt him, silver......Kash's eyes gleamed with a strange triumph. Such a beast would have been too strong to kill outright, even with himself and Ember....but now.....
If I only had some privacy, I could become something more threatening, but I guess I'd better be glad I'm a hound and not a rat! he thought. Ember landed with a heavy thud, the wind knocked from her lungs. She struggled to catch her breath as Kashati nudged her shoulder...She struggled to stand, but the blow stunned her.
Her lips curled up in a weak growl as her emerald eyes locked on the werewolf, her teeth gleaming in the moonlight.A legend of Old, A story forgotten
Veric stood dumbfounded with his sword drawn, "What is going on here?" He yelled, but no one seemed to pay attention to his voice. He saw the catlike creatures, they brought a sense of fear into his heart. And then Radu...what..was Radu?
He stepped foward slowly, his sword held in a white-knuckled grip. If anything were to try to harm him or Kyliana, they would find out just how good he was with the sword.
"Step back now!" Veric licked his dry lips. He held the point of his sword in the direction of the two feline creatures and Radu. "I said, step back!" Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
He moved back slightly, not wanting to upset more of these humans, and lowered at Ember's side, placing his free arm over her, whilst the silver blade still pointed at Radu's lying figure.
Sir Garion saw that the girl had the protection of the hound, he could here the comotion of what sounded like a fight happening close by, drawing his sword he went to investigate the noise.
He came into the small clearing, he could see to cat-like creatures on the far side with what he thought was the crumpled form of Radu on the ground, and in front of hima young man who looked more than a little scared waving his sword at the creatures heard him say"Step Back Now!"
Garion was glad he was wearing his Solomanic armour"Would you be in need of assistance young man"he asked the boy casually as not to alarm him to much keeping one eye on the creatures.
Garion sheathed his sword and lifted his crossbow from the side of his saddle cocked it and waited for someone to act or talk."There is only Ten of them and 2 of us, It hardly seems fair, shall i kill myself"
Radu stood up slowly, still limpimg somwhat from the silver-burn, he turned his wolflike head to Garion and almost smiled, Garion had been with the group of Solamnics who he and some of the pack had helped fight off a Draconian incursion to the south. The Solomanic had seen his demi-human form before and was not alarmed in the least by it. But still, it was hard to talk coherently with a snout like this.
The watchers could now see the Change clearly in the light of the campfire, after a second or two both Felines had looked away, Veric was looking more than slightly green and Thorinn was beggining to go cross-eyed. Garion was sweating ever so slightly as he forced himself to watch, he always made an issue out of this. After a few moments the Change was over, but all ho saw it would forever carry the horrific sight of splitting slesh and cracking bone as Radu's tortured body wrenched itself from form to form.
The now human shaped spymaster adressed Garion first,
"Long time no see old friend, the young man is Veric Strongshield, you remember his father don't you? He's on something of a quest of self-discovery I feel. the two Felines are Kashati and his mate, they don't seem to be aware of the reaction seasoned fighters have to those who sneak up to thier camps and jump in on them. The dwarf is Thorinn, a mercenary who is in my employ. There is another, a girl but she is bathing at the moment...."
He held down a smirk as he saw Garion's face grow just a little red. Then his eyes hardened as he turned to the Felines,
"Veric is under my protection, as is his .... well, as is Kyliana. When people skulk around the edges of his camp with drawn blades I attack them, as with those who jump in to attack someone within the camp, playfighting or not, am I to risk that the next pack of goblins are just playing tag when they run through? And Veric, put your sword away and find Kyliana, there's nothing here that I can't stop dead, and you have nothing to fear from me.""Ah, they have a cave troll....."
Ember rubbed her cheek against Kashati's calf, and stood shakily. She stretched, and her claws fumbled around the emerald pendant around her neck. the leather thong snapped, and her form also Shifted
Ember stood shakily, her emerald eyes glaring angrily at the werewolf, her dark, smoky grey hair tumbled loosely to her waist, all waves and curls. her face though, very human-like was still feline, and she stood and walked straighter than Kashati...
"fool of a dog...if I had wanted to attack you I would have!" she spat, her hands clenching in anger, her claws biting into her own palm to clear her head. Ember was born human, not feline...her deranged, dark cleric of a father had chosen her for his "experiments"
Ember glared at the rest of the group, the young mand shout to stand back, and the knight with his crossbow locked on them. "humans...greater fools if you ask me...always acting before thinking....I am just thankful that none of you shot first and then asked questions" Her hand strayed to her right side, still sore, probably a cracked rib.
"if I had seriously thought of harming any of you...several would have fallen before anyone would've noticed where I was." she hissed, and turned to Kashati. "I'm alright...I'm tougher than I look..." she purred, her hand straying to his cheek.A legend of Old, A story forgotten
Thorinn looked from side to side, having been really shaken up by all this... wierdness. He, as a mercanary, had never seen such beings. He had vaguely heard of werewolves, but nothing of the feline beings. He slowly put his axe back in its holder on his back.
He realized his mouth was gaping open and quickly closed it. He kept moving his eyes back and forth across the two felines and Radu.
"Uhhh...I..I think I am going to g..go back to watch n..near the horses.", stuttered the dwarf.
A piece of cat fur floated up to Thorinn and landed on his nose. The dwarf began to sneeze ferociously, never ceasing, and attempting to brush the cat fur off him. He ran to the horses and the fur floated off his nose. The dwarf gasped for breath.
Ralindahl could hear the battle, which was quick and soon subsided to murmers, but he held his ground, never leaving Kyliana's side. He had always liked her, though had never had the courage to admit it ... He chanced a slight sideways glance, though he still felt guilty that he had the advantage as the hound.
Nope. He wouldn't let her know his Talent. She'd probably end up hating him forever.
But where was Veric?! He, at least, should have some idea that young, beautiful girls are not to be left alone in a stream in teh middle of the night in a forest infested with scary things!!!!
After a few moments the Change was over, but all ho saw it would forever carry the horrific sight of splitting slesh and cracking bone as Radu's tortured body wrenched itself from form to form.
Feeling a little sick, the same as evertime he has watched it Garion Spoke"Well Met Old Friend, You have a knack of attracting the nicest people, this is the young pup you were talking about, well i should be able to beat him into some sort of knight, is his father still the same controling egotistical pig that i bested after he insulted my parents"Garion smiled a little at the thought of that.
Then there was a scream"the Girl!, Veric come with me, we shall see what sort of a man you are! there are two of us radu, you see to the felines make sure that they are ok"
With that Garion turned and ran towards the stream with Veric in tow, he saw the hound with 4 wolves bearing down on it and the girl" Veric see to the girl, I shall Deal with this!"
he took the lead wolf with a crossbow bolt in the chest, he dropped the crossbow drew his sword and shield and charged, one wolf leaped at him he bashed it away with his sheild and it crumpled to the ground, another was engaging the hound.
the fourth wolf paused for a moment, Garion smiled Dropped his sword and sheild"Come on Beast, Come to me"the wolf leaped at him, the knight caught the wolf mid-air, wrapping his arms around its backed he squeezed, then with a sickening crack he broke the back of the wolf, garion quickly gather ed his sword and shield and looked around to see what else was happening"There is only Ten of them and 2 of us, It hardly seems fair, shall i kill myself"
Ralindahl was extremely happy that the knight decided to join him. While the Knight started on the first two, the other two concentrated on the Hound, closing in on him from two sides. Ears flattened against his head, Ralindahl made the first move, lunging at the larger one and immediately snapping at its' jaw. The other nipped at him, tore his shoulder, but then turned his attention to the knight. This gave Ralindahl open concentration on the last one. They rolled and barked and yipped in the stream, until they broke apart and Ralindahl receded into the forest. The wolf followed. There were sounds of a tussle, yips, yelps, and whimpers, and then stillness.
The brushes moved.
Ralindahl stepped from the forest, bleeding, limping, tounge lolled out ... he lay down in the stream and let the water carress his wounds, lapping it up. He looked at Radu briefly, regarding the comment and disregarding it, as any proper Hound would do, since any proper Hound would have heard it, but not understand it. Radu ... what a moron ... Ralindahl thought with disgust. His talent was his alone, and if he wanted to keep it secret, that was his own darn business. People like Radu who liked to butt into other's affairs just because they were 'omnipotent' really bugged him. I'll have to bite him later. He thought.
Now he was in his full wolf form, but larger than any wolf the others had ever seen, standing at a little under human waist-hieght - Radu was a muscle-packed slavering monster of a wolf, his pitch black fur and intelligent yellow eyes making him look more like a hellhound than a wolf. OOC: Sorry everyone. I have been really stressed and busy at work. My creative streak has kind of flown, but I will try something.
IC: Things were going to quickly for Veric. New companions. New enemies, they all seemed to be rushing on him too quickly. People were more than what they seemed. His nurse had always tought him that. His father thought everyone was cut and dry. Black and white. Veric had always agreed with this until recently. Now he was starting to see the shades of gray that were finely woven into life.
Veric and his companions tromped down a rough dirt road, mud splashing with every step. It was raining again. This was a rain that wouldn't stop. The drops were huge and swollen. They soaked the clothes in a matter of seconds. Veric kept his head down with the water dripping through the locks of his hair. On his right stood Kyliana. He watched her carefully after the events that had happened in the past few days. To his left walked Garion. The brash Knight of Solomnia. The Knight was definately a welcome addition to the group. Not only was he a master of weaponry, but his sense of humor (though it took a little to get used to) was definatley inviting.
Radu and the rest of the companions walked behind. Veric didn't know who to trust anymore. His feelings were mixed. A jumble of emotions. He kept his hand on the ornamental blade. He would need to get a plain one soon. He couldn't walk around everywhere with a fancy sword. He needed to fit in.
"Where are we headed to, boy?" Garion asked in his straight-forward attitude.
Veric raised his head slowly, "Palanthas, I have always wanted to see that city."
Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
Radu walked along in the rain, Veric was muttering something about heading Palanthas, Garion was earning the boy's trust well. Radu was glad Garion was with the group - they'd need someone who knew his ways, this night of all nights. He sped up to draw level with the knight and whispered in his ear.
"I'm not going to be there tonight, you know why. You know the precautions to take - wolfsbane line around the camp and any silver in plain view and near the perimiter, and keep two men on watch. And make darned sure no-one leaves the camp after I do."
At Garion's nod, the werewolf fell back into his brooding, the cat had been right, the Pack's territory had shrunk, and others had moved in a while later - apparently the Felines were one of them. This could cause problems in the future, the Pack was growing and there was talk of reclaiming old territories. This would need further thought...
Gilt edged Radu, what can they do to stop a power as ancient as yours? It's all perspective.
Radu shook his head slightly and looked up at the dimming sky, the wolf's night. The night of madness. The night of woe. The night of power. Many races called it many things - but it came once every lunar month. But they didn't always know it. Radu could see the full moon, but none of the others could. It was all perspective."Ah, they have a cave troll....."
"I Belive it is time to make camp everyone, tonight we are going to have to camp close together, fire in the middle i want the camp shaped in a circle, the horses are to be in the circle as well" Garion knew full well what was coming he had seen it many times before.
with the sun sinking fast, they quickly established camp. Garion gathered the group and spoke to them all"ok i am going to give you all a silver dagger, keep it handy thoughout the night, there will the three watches, i myself will on all of them, as i will not sleep tonight. Dwarf you take the first with me, Veric i want you for the second, felines you work together i want you both for the last"
Garions sword Cythraska had been forged by a dwarven smith whom had used some silver with the magic he had entered in to the weapon. everyone except the dwarf(he had assured him that his axe had the proper elements) had the daggers, The Knight had lined the camp with wolfsbane, some of the group noticed him placing silver markers around the camp
"If anything Happens tonight, do as i say, dont argue or you will die!, do you all understand"Garion looked around the group, he had noticed that radu had melted into the dark already"may the Gods Watch over us" he muttered under his breath"There is only Ten of them and 2 of us, It hardly seems fair, shall i kill myself"
He was a little confused. What was going on. He looked to Ember, then to the group. He didn't like Radu, no surprise their, feline and canine didn't get along at the best of times. If anything they would tolerate being in each others presence. Kashati moved closer to Ember, then leapt up into a nearby tree, settling himself down on an outcropping branch. He gestured for Ember to come up. Come see my site : http://pub95.ezboard.com/bthegifted15252
Just a the group were begining to settle down after Sir Garion's rather odd lecture, the were startled straight back to wakefulness. The darkness outside the camp looked even more forboding and sinister than usual. But that was lost to the travellers, lost in the sheer terror of what had woken them, even Sir Garion looked unusually edgy.
Again it came - and no less terrifying, only Dragonfear could be more incapacitating than the soul-rending howl that sounded from the darkness outside the camp. An animal sound, but with an awful hint of a powerful intellect behind it. It hearkened back to racial memories buried deep within each of them, it spoke of power, a terrifying, destructive power that took lives and souls by the dozen and did not change in it's matter-of-fact, emotionless killing.
Ancient, Glit edged and............deadly?
The grouptried to settle down as another chilling howl rent the air. Garion stiffened, he had ravelled with Radu before and one thought was sceaming alarm bells at him -
That one was closer....."Ah, they have a cave troll....."
And what about me? Am I not worthy enough to stand watch?! A stable boy, maybe, but Ralindahl was Veric's age, and much more built and experienced to actual battles, nothing like the grueling yet practiced lessons that Veric recieved ... Ralindahl had been in his fair share of barfights, fistfights, catfights, dogfights .... he had even been attacked by a hawk one day when he had taken the form of a dove ....
He looked at Kyliana. That day, when he had been the dove, he had meant to show her ... but she turned her eyes from him and that's when the hawk attacked. He still had a scar on his arm from it, though he told everyone it was just another drunk from another pub he had had to deal with.
Stableboy. When people hear that word, they think simple. Simple Stableboy.
But Ralindahl was perhaps the most complex person he knew.
He shifted into a small housecat and curled up by Kyliana's side, in a way taking up his own 'watch'. He had found that he was much more alert as a cat, much more agile, could sleep in an instant but could awake just as quickly. His green eyes watched Veric and Garion. Didn't trust him? Ralindahl was surprised, for all the scrapes he had gotten Veric out of and the blasted prince didn't even recognize him.
Not two minutes, Ralindahl was up and spitting ... a second after that he was standing, as a human, with his silver dagger, helping Kyliana get to her feet. There was a determination in his eyes that few humans had yet seen, as he had not yet been in an encounter like this as a human. Animal, yes, human, no.
"What is that, Garion?" He demanded, his voice hinting that he knew Garion had trifled with this new terrible enemy before ...
Thorinn, alert from the sudden movements of Ralindahl, had is large battleaxe in his hands. He looked around for possible danger, but could sense nothing. He looked at Garion. The dwarf was still confused by everything. He wasnt used to all this verbal commotion. Physical commotion was nothing, but words were not used a lot on the battlefield. Thorinn didnt like to talk much.
Veric sat with his ornamental blade held tightly in his hands. That sound..what was it. He didn't like to admit that he was afraid, but at the moment, he could hardly keep his teeth from chattering. Everyone else was looking around with fear somewhere in their eyes. Veric stood up slowly, holding his sword in front of him.
"Wh...what is out there?" he stuttered, trying to keep his voice from catching.
He looked around at the companions. Radu was looking around with a sense of understanding. Garion stood with a calm air, carefully examining the shadows. Kyliana looked frightened, but even she seemed more relaxed that Veric felt. He couldn't look like a coward in front of these people...
"I..am going to go check it out." Veric said, proud that his voice sounded deep and strong.
Without another word, he walked off into the shadows, keeping his blade up and ready. Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
Ralindahl swore. Perhaps he wasn't the only one who knew this, but Veric wouldn't last two seconds on his own. He shuffled Kyliana over towards Garion and the Dwarf, and then leapt into the forest behind Veric.
"Veric! Veric!" Ralindahl half-whispered. He caught up with the prince. "No more waiting for you to come around, but if you don't remember there were situations like this that I had to drag you from! I had half a mind to leave you and let yourself try to struggle out with that flimsy blade and perfected moves. Whatever it is, they'll hit you ... hit you with something that only experience can dodge. Don't look at me like I'm you're dad, just listen to what I have to say; I--"
With that Garion dove into the shadows he could hear Veric, he let his dragon sight take over he could see him about fifteen yards in front of him, off to his left he could se Radu rather the Werewolf about a hundred yards away, Garion hoped that Radu had not noticed the boy,
He glided through the brush soundlessly he came beside the boy, he whispered"Veric, quietly and Quickly turn around and head back to the camp,do not talk just move now!"
"Quick, he's closing."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Whilst Garion and Veric were running back to the camp, those still at the camp were having thier own problems. They were staring around agitatedly, weapons drawn when Kyliana spotted what she looked like some hulking figure near the circle of light they sheltered in, she fancied that a pair of eyes glinted faintly, looking at her with an odd intelligence. Then something came back to her from her old tutors at the castle,
Veric came crashing back into the clearing where the rest of the companions were waiting. His palms were sweaty from fear. It took all he had to hold onto his sword. He felt foolish. Like a little boy. Garion was running next to him, hardly breathing hard from the exertion. Veric skidded to a stop and looked around. Eyes were looking in from the darkness. They shun brightly as a thick stream of moonlight crashed through the clouds.
"What is going on? Why is it so quiet?" Veric whispered, trying desperatly to control his breathing.
Garion looked at him with anger filled eyes and just shook his head, motioning for silence. Veric slowly turned in circles, judging the enemies he knew were out there, but couldn't see.
"Something's coming..." Veric whispered, looking expentantly around the camp. Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
Slowly Garion turned on the spot, then looked down slowly at where he and Veric had come running back into the camp. Then he swore. The line of Wolfsbane had been scuffed and broken as the pair had pelted back into the camp.
The eyes slowly began to multiply, shimmering in the light of a moon that none of the travellers could see. They faded in and out of view, a savage intelligence guaging thier prey. Picking out the weak, the easyest prey. Thier low growling and sniffling shook the others to thier bones, ages-old instincts telling them to run for all they were worth.
His comrades needed him. He wouldn't run and look like a craven. There was nothing to do but wait and watch. They would attack soon enough.
Veric put down his ornate sword and quickly grabbed an extra longsword that Garion had belted to his packs. He swung the blade testing its balance. Perfect. He looked at Garion's glowing body with awe, his blood started boiling getting ready for the battle.
Ralindahl's fear was something far away, like a warning beacon to a ship on a foggy morning. He usually chose to ignore it, and now was no different. Make no doubt, the creatures' size and ferociousness caught Ralindahl off guard, but his experience held him steady ...
With a terrible concert of howls and gibbering screams the pack rushed forward, one span away, it's fur burning ferociously as it fell to the floor. The rest surged through, swamping the defenders - encircling and seperating them with terrifyingly clinical efficiency - Garion was surrounded in an instant, Veric was all but dragged down and Thorrin vanished momenterialy under a mound of furred bodies, then he was glimsed again as they fell back, broken and bleeding - then they surged in again.
Yet more bulky bodies pressed forward to envelope the Felines, swiftly seperating them. The last to come through the breach headed swiftly for Kyliana - a few peeling off to occupy Ralindhal whilst the others circled Kyliana - waiting for her to run, or until she was surrounded."Ah, they have a cave troll....."
Ralindahl's dagger found its' way into a few throats ... He had completely disregarded Garion's request only to maim ... What good would that have done?!
Suddenly, something was on his back, but before teeth could sink into is neck, he changed with an alarming speed, one moment only a man of weak flesh, the next a towering reptilian creature, not quite dragon, but still bigger than Draconian, Aurak, or any of the other lizard men.
He grabbed the wolf and snapped it in a stone-like grasp, then turned towards Kyliana. Wolves jumped at him, and he brushed them aside, but as he was almost level with her he suddenly toppled ....
... the reptile he had taken form of was his own concoction, meant to be nearly invincable, and where he had practically succeeded in that aspect, it drained his energy like nothing else, and now he lay as a human, breathing hard, and ragged, struggling to stand next to Kyliana and at the same time fend off any attackers for the both of them.
But in his weakened condition ... he failed ...
((ooc; I'm not sure why I'm explaining, I guess I just want to say that I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes (i.e. 1)Ralindahl disregarding Garion's orders 2) changing into an 'invincable beast') but that this contributes to his personality ... cocky, not completely logical, hopefully you get the picture ...))"Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli, The Fellowship Of The Ring
Veric swung Garion's spare sword with percision and accuracy. The tense moments of the beginning of the battle were gone, he allowed his ability with the blade to take over. He had been training most of his life for moments like this. It was what he was raised for, to be trained as a knight, and eventually be Lord over the Strongsheild lands.
The creature's came in quickly. Garion and the rest of his companions made short work of many of the wolf-creatures. Veric swung his sword as one came too close, sweeping the snarling jaws and the head along with it off of the thing's shoulders. Many of the creatures were dead, but more and more kept jumping through the gap.
The dwarf was surrounded by the creature's. He ran over and killed a few, allowing the dwarf to get a little extra breathing room in preperation for the next onslaught. Veric's bloodlust had taken over, he killed all of the creature's he could. He suffered scratches and bits and rips in his clothing, but there was little he could do to stop that.
He was just finishing off another wolf, when he heard a scream behind him....Kyliana. Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
dragonfear swept the battlegroundeveryone felt their minds being touched"leave Creatures of the night, these people are not yours, they are under my protection" the creatures with kyliana dropped her "come my friends come to me" they could sense great pain and love in the same thought.
OOC: Now that's just cheating.(j/k) Still - if that's the way it's going to be played....you've forgotten one little thing..
IC:
The huge dragon looked down triumphantly - just as the effects of the dragonfear loosed it's hold on the werewolves, for the black moon was full and they were rendered completely insane. Without a moment's hesitation they grabbed Kyliana and scattered - Garion's swelling into dragonform had finaly blown away the wolfsbane barrier and they were free to go wherever they wished.
A great many of them rushed through the travellers, clawing and snapping at them with renewed ferocity Although Garion's great claws and swinging tail crushed and smashed the creatures, throwing them far across the campsite they were still werewolves, and though he wasa silver dragon - he was armoured in dragonscale, not the true metal. The horrific upshot of this was that the broken and bleeding bodies simply reformed and charged him again.
Then a terrifying howl broke the night - and this one truly froze Veric and his companions to the spot. For the call of the greater werewolf is as powerful as dragonfear itself - and cannot be resisted any less. Yet it seemed to have a bizzare effect on the werewolves - the ones carrying Kyliana dropped her and fled - shortly followed by the others."Ah, they have a cave troll....."
Ralindahl grunted and lifted himself on the elbow of his good arm ... the other he clung to his chest, bleeding, the shirt torn.
"Veric ... Kyliana ... get .. Kyliana ..." He said. The Dragonfear had opressed him, but now he was rising above it, trying, struggling to stand. The Greater Were cried out and Ralindahl answered in a pained yell, the fear that creature struck in his heart was nothing like he had ever felt before, Ralindahl the fearless, fearless to a fault, was now almost at tears. He shamed himself for it, and soon let the tougher side take over as he went against the searing pain in his body to stand. OOC: I believe that metallic dragons give dragonfear to those of evil hearts. Just like metallics give dragonfear to those of "good" hearts. It works both ways. Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
The day dawned brightly the next morning. The sun rose like a molten ball in the sky. Veric leaned against a tree, watching Garion out of the corner of his eye. The night kneeled while polishing his sword.
A Dragon? Veric thought. How could he be a dragon?
The rest of the comrades huddled around each other, hoping that their safety in numbers would protect them from the wilds that, while not seen, could still be felt around them. The creatures were gone for the moment, but with them was, Kyliana. All of Veric's plans were now put on hold. Finding Kyliana and bringing her back was now top priority.
Veric pushed himself from the tree and came to stand before the rest of the companions.
"I am going after, Kyliana. I was tought to track, so I should be able to find their trail easily. I am not asking any of you to come with me. I will be leaving within the hour. If anyone wants to come with, they can. But I will not make you. These creatures are dangerous. It is a possibility that some of us could get hurt, or even die. But it is a risk I am going to take."
The last few setences of his small speech almost froze in his throat. But with the danger, it was lending Veric strength. He was getting more brave, he was changing. He looked at each of the travelling companions in turn, and then walked over to stand next to the large tree. He knelt down and began polishing his sword and tightening his leather armor.
Soon, Kyliana. Soon I will be coming to get you. Veric thought. In the distance, a wolf howled. Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
A cold, calm voice sounded out from the other side of the clearing,
"Track them? Ha! What you've been taught wouldn't catch you a wolf - let alone a Were."
Radu stood there, in human form, leaning easily against the tall trunk of a pine tree.
"I, on the other hand, will have no trouble finding these....*weres*....."
Oddly, Radu seemed to spit that last word - as if he was using it to describe something less than he felt that name appropriate for - or something that in his eyes didn't deserve the name."Ah, they have a cave troll....."
Thorinn came out of the nearby shrub, dragging his right foot. His right arm hung lifelessly from his shoulders and his left hand clutched his neck. He made a trail of blood as he walked. He came and saw Radu and said, "Were...were....w...wol...wolf....", and he pointed at Radu. His hand came off his neck and blood started squirting from his jugular vein. The ground was too cold to bury Thorinn under. So they had to pile a cairn of rocks over him. When it was done, it was large and sturdy. But it would keep the wildlife from ravaging his body. The dwarf had only meant to help them, Veric thought, his presence would be missed.
Veric said a few words as the others milled around the small camp. Garion was up and moving. He had gotten a little sleep. While he still looked gray and tired, at least he was moving. Veric shook his head. He could still not believe what he had seen that previous night. So many things had changed since he left the castle. So many...
He finished praying to Paldine for the soul of Veric. He even said a few words to Reorx, hoping that the god of the dwarves would hear him, even though he wasn't a follower.
"It is time we left. We are going to be in enemy territory. I don't ask any of you to come. But I am going after Kyliana. The rest of you can leave if you want. Go back to your lives. But I am going after her." Veric stood straight and tall, looking everybit the Knight and Lord he would have to become.
He looked at each of the companions in turn, then with his shoulders held back. He walked into the woods. He didn't know who would follow. But it was time for action. Kyliana would be brought back alive. And if she wasn't...every one of those creatures would die. Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
Veric didn't care who followed him. He knew that he could handle the sword that swung at his hip. It would be nice to have people along with him on the trek, but he could do it himself if need be. He heard crashing in the brush behind him, so he knew someone was coming along with him. But he didn't bother to look back and see who it was.
"I am coming, Kyliana." He whispered into he crisp air.
He put his hand on the hilt of his sword and splashed through muddy puddles, keeping his feet away from the dry sticks that could break. He had experience in woodlore, and he was a very good hunter. With a small sigh of exhaustion, Veric moved on through the trees. Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
IC: As Garion and Radu walked through the forest, Garion felt that they were being watched. He looked around and saw nothing. He continued with all his senses on full alert, trying to ignore the itch of his markings. He heard a sound behind him, and he turned, drawing his sword. Once again, seeing nothing. Turning to continue once more, he found a figure stading in front of him. The person wore a floor length black cape, and a hood that concealed his face. The person drew a his short sword, and Garion readied himself for an attack, but the person planted the sword in the ground, and raised his hands, and kneeled.
"Sir, my name is Hanneroth Stranga, lord of the Elven village of Duran. recently my village was attacked by Dark wolves. none were spared, save myself as i was in a neighbouring village, discussing our borders. I lost everything, and since have been roaming. I have followed your party for sometime, and seeing as though your party itself has had trouble with these same wolves, i would pledge my allegiance to your cause."
with that he placed his hand on his sword, and bowed his head.
"you have my sword, my Bow, and my Elven Medicine. I am fleet of foot and stealth is my forte. Accept me into your party, and i shall not be a hinderence"
The aroma of the dried blood pleasurely tickled his nostrils. The scent wafted around him like the smell of a cooking roast. He sniffed the air and followed the scent. He was hungry...
As he rushed through the brush with demonic speed, the leaves and twigs brushed against his furry skin. Sticks under his feet were crushed, but made no sound. The scent became stronger. He was getting closer...
Then he almost tripped over a large pile of rocks. He began to pass it, then he sniffed the air. Blood...
He quickly dug through the heavy rocks, tossing them like pebbles. His hunger had strengthened him tremendously, and he could bear it no longer.
After all the rocks were cleared, he sniffed the corpse of the dwarf. The smell pleased him greatly and he grinned. Saliva dripped from his mouth, his red eyes twinkled. With a great bellow, he opened his mouth, exposing his deadly fangs, outstretched his claws, and lunged at the body...The Time is Near....No More Darkness...The Flames Scar the Night...The Fire Still Burns...My Future is Clear...A Date With The Devil...A Dance With His Mistress...My Path is Chosen....
After the corpse was devoured, the werewolf slumped by a tree and lied down. The meal was very filling and he was tired from the extrenuous running.
Just as he was about to fall asleep, an energy swirled around him, engulfing his bones. They began to pop and bend in unnatural ways, uncurling his legs from under him. His fur began to fall away, leaving the human skin. The color of his eyes became yellow and the hair at the top of his head became blond. His ears shrank to that of a humans, as his nostrils grew into a nose. His wolf appearance had dissappeared, leaving a human where the werewolf once was.
The human disregarded it and lay still where he was. His eyes slowly closed and he drifted into slumber.The Time is Near....No More Darkness...The Flames Scar the Night...The Fire Still Burns...My Future is Clear...A Date With The Devil...A Dance With His Mistress...My Path is Chosen....
Veric stopped outside a large, dark cave.The smell drifting from the cavern almost made him gag. He didn't know what would be in there, but the creatures could have very well gone into this cave with Kyliana. He reached into his pack and pulled out a torch. After striking his flint various times, the torch was alight. Veric looked over his shoulder and could see Radu and Garion coming through the trees.
Radu only glared at the elf, werewolves indeed? The dark-clad humanoid bristled in anger, the werewolves had attacked the elves? How dare this fop of an elf accuse them of agression!
The attacks had happened, Radu knew that - he had voted on the council that ordered them. But to accuse them of baselessly attacking the elves was nothing but slander. The raids had been a retaliation - three dens had been put to the torch or smoked out, ten had been lost in those attacks - pups and old ones all."Ah, they have a cave troll....."
The naked man who was once a wolf, sat up from his nap. It was a little chilly, so he gathered the clothes of the dwarf and slipped them on himself. "Hmmm... a little small, but I do feel warmer."
Then he sniffed the air, using his wolflike senses in human form. He could smell a group of people, mostly humans.....and....another werewolf. The cave was dark and dank. It smelled strongly of must. It was very dark. The only light coming from the fading sun that was lowering in the west. Veric couldn't see anything in the inside the cave, at his feet were a few bones, but to what they belonged to, he couldn't tell.
"In here!" he yelled to whomever was following. He walked deeper into the cavern with his torch held high. Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear.
the elf pondered as to why Radu glared at him so.
His village had done nothing to the werewolves. his mind flashed back to the image that lay before him when he returned to his village. bones of the dead littered the ground, blood, the blood everywhere.
"LORD STRANGA!" exclaimed Garion, gesturing to him to follow
Stranga popped out of his day dream and fell in behind Garion as he too sped off into the cave. "I know only half of you half as well as i should like, and i like half of you half as well as you deserve"
