OOC: 5th Age setting, in Qualinesti. Long story short: the once proud elven kingdom has been taken over by the green dragon Overlord, Beryl and her Dark Knight minions. It is ruled by a puppet king, Gilthas son of Laurana and Tanis Half-Elven, both heros of the Lance. The real power is held by the Thalas-Enthia, the elven senators.

Young Gilthas was lured by Senator Rashas to be the king, being a frail and sickly youth, to rule the kingdom in their power. Now years later, he has been secretly making a resistance with the help of his kagonesti wife, Kerian, known as Lioness. With the help of the dwarves of Thorbardin, they have been helping elves to refuge, from the power of the ever harassful dark Knights and Beryl.

The story will be started in a tavern on the outskirts of Qualinost, where the adventure will be decided. Characters must be elf or dwarf, at least related (hill dwarfs, mountain dwarfs, hal-elves etc.) Mages and mystics must keep in mind this is the 5th Age, where god-magic is gone, and wild sorcery is in bloom. have fun ;)

Before the Chaos War, Kelanthis had been a favored son of Paladine. It was rumoured that his rare silver-spun hair, and misty silver eyes were a blessing from Paladine when he discovered the True Gods, not long before the War of the Lance. He was a favourite of Paladine, and was given a platinum bracelet which would augment his power.

At the end of the Chaos War, Paladine came to him in a dream, explaining that the gods would leave Krynn to save their beloved children. As a gift to his favourite children, he let them keep the powers of their gifts. In his case, the platinum bracelet. Even now, during the Age of Mortals, when there was no longer god-magic or clerical power, the bracelet would still heal.

Since he no longer had clerical power, however, he lived the life of a simple farmer near the borderlands. He had married, and had a son. He was a hard working farmer, as well as a healer for the locals with the help of his bracelet. Kelanthis was happy for a while, even with the Knight's in occupation of Qualinesti in the name of their conqueror, the green dragon overlord, Beryl.

They were left alone for the most part, and the dragon's tax wasn't too hard on them. Their crops were always bountiful, and were sold in some of the best markets in Qualinost, making them plenty of money to live a comfortable life. Until they started hearing rumors of Dark Knights ravaging towns and villages in search of an outlaw who had been harassing their caravans, containing tribute to the dragon.

Some villagers got news of loved ones killed by the Knights, and everyone was starting to feel nervous and frightened. When one night, while hunting, he came home to a burned down village. Very few remained, and these were mostly widows and some children who were hiding in the forest at the first sing of danger.

The village was devastated, and nothing was left of the crops or animals. The survivors fled to live with relatives in other parts of Qualinesti. He was left with only his life, his possesions being burned or taken by the Knights. He buried his wife and infant, in the field where they had grown their food to survive. He whispered a prayer to the departed Paladine, and grasped the bracelet. It always comforted him, feeling like Paladine's touch.

Soon after, he departed for Qualinost where he would try find work. He was a good wood-worker, and he hoped to get a job with a guild. He currently lived in a room on top of a tavern, on the outskirts of Qualinost. He worked at as a wood-carver for wealthy and noble patrons. He made a living out of it, but still he felt his life lacked meaning, substance.

He longed to fill the empty void, to find something that would give his life a meaning. He wanted revenge on the Dark Knight's for destroying his family, his village, his life. He needed a cause, to give his life substance...

That night, he was sitting at the bar, drowning his sorrow with ale. He had already drunk himself into a stupor, and would soon retire to his room that he rented upstairs. The proprietor, a good friend of his, looked out for him and would usually bring him to his room by the time he started sleeping on his bar.

((OOC: You can be a hill dwarf, but it is preferable to be a mountain dwarf. And half-elves are acceptable also. :)))

Kronathalas flitted through the forest avoiding the dark nights. The elf could have walked up to any and been received well, as well as any knight would receive an elf. His checkered past would add to that, having once worked for the dark knights. He might still even have some rank.

That was all behind him now. The elf had realized his quest for vengance was futile and had moved on with his life. Now he was on the right road again, looking to heal his people he had left. The most surefire way to do that seemed to be to find the Lioness"Are you trying to make me look stupid in front of the other guests?"

A golden haired bar maiden walked over to him. "Can I get you anything Kel?" she asks him. "No thanks, Rosie." he says. He smiles, then says: "I'm fine." Before she leaves, he hands her a steel coin. She quickly wipes her hands on her apron, and accepts the coin with a smile. "I'll see you later then," she says in her sweet, melodious voice. Kelan sighed. He had a long day of work ahead him him the next day, so he decided to retire for the night.

He laid another steel coin on the bar, to pay for the nights drinks. The barkeep walks over and nods. "I'll see yer tommorow then, aye?" he said. Derth Stoneaxe was a mountain dwarf, a good friend of Kel's. He and Rosalynsa were the ones that helped him through his grief, and they were friends ever since.

Derth's tavern, called the Drunken Gnome, was in the moderately living area on the outskirts of Qualinsost. It was only a short walk across the silver bridges, past the Dark Knights guardsmen where he flashed his papers to pass, and two blocks down from the Artisans Avenue to get to the his small shop on Woodworkers lane.

OOC: I though I already posted again but whatever.

IC: Kerack looked back at the dark knight in disgust. Ever since they came life had been horrible. He had never left his mountain home before until they came. He was taller than most dwarves and had brown hair. He wore heavy boots and black pants. His stained white shirt was old but still fit him. He had an axe strapped onto his back and was carrying a bag in left hand. This was all he had left, even his beard the pride of a dwarf had been cut.

He and others cut their beards of out of shame because they could not save the ones they loved from the damned knights. Kerack went a little further down the road and looked up to see 'The Drunken Gnome Inn'.

Kerack entered the inn hopping for some stew and ale. He was quite a strange sight. A tall beardless dwarf wearing old dirty clothes. He would have done anything if it would help to rid the land of the knights. He walked over to the bar and ordered a mug of ale. His eyes glanced over at the elf returning to his room. Kron continued his silent march through the forest. The trees were becoming sparse now, meaning that civilization was close and also the knights.

That was weird. Normally the elf encountered border patrols of some sort, groups of two and three. For the past two hours there had been none.

The elf peered between two trees and looked at the lighted front of the Drunken Gnome. He'd watch for a little while first."Are you trying to make me look stupid in front of the other guests?"

OOC: Since I have to work 56 hours next week and I'm working 2 weeks in a row without a day off, I'll just post something now while I have time...if its not acceptable and you don't want a Dark Knight female turned good in the story, I can always edit it later and use my half-elf! I was thinking of making my Dark Knight sort of a Marshal Medan character - the conquerer who falls in love with Qualinesti.

BIC:

Kylie drained the last of a tall tankard of foaming dark ale, grimaced, and loudly called for another. The elven ale still tasted weak and watered down compared to what she usually drank, but after 6 months stationed in Qualinesti, she was starting to get used to the taste. She brushed a few strands of her silver and gold hair out of her eyes and surveyed the room. A few other Dark Knights sat in a corner, drinking heavily and gambling loudly. They had tried to convince her to join their party, but, as usual, she had refused. She drank alone, if only to take the edge off the boredom of being stationed in a semi-hostile, besieged nation and her confused emotions.

Tall and seemingly delicate, Kylie was not the normal run-of-the-mill Dark Knight. Slender and shapely, with tanned skin and eyes of a strange aqua color, people often mistook her for a cowering weakling. However, she could out-drink and out-fight most men twice her size.

Warm from the fire, the hot food, and the ale, Kylie settled back in her chair, the shadows of the common room falling across her. A slight breeze blew in through an open window, bringing with it the smells of the forest. Kylie took it all in pleasantly. She was beginning to enjoy her posting here - the elves were cowed, if not complacent, and her home in the city of Qualinost was well tended and the large garden planted with a riot of beautiful flowers, trees, and shrubs. Her forays to the border, such as she was on now, were normally uneventful and provided her with a means to get out of the city once in a while and enjoy the quaintness and tranquility of the deep forests and small farming communities.

Perhaps, she thought, I should think about leaving the Knights, making a permanent home here.

Kylie sighed and took another pull from the tankard that the barmaid set at her elbow. There would be plenty of time to decide that tomorrow.Peace and terror all in one, My future life has just begun.....

Equillionalasa skirted the streets with stealthy grace. His robes rustled sround his ankles and the hem dusted the paths. His legs ached, his arms and lungs seemed on fire. The blackness offered some comfort, the chill night air soothing his skin. He had never abandoned his white robes. They were still his calling. Silver runes adorned the hem and sleeves, runes that now held little power with the ruination of high sorcery.

But now....now their was still magic. Primordial magic, wilds and unchecked, it flowed throught the foundations of krynn, ran in every tree, every particle of air.....he breathed and lived this magic, for although it was demanding, the power was exceptional.

Now he only had to bend it to his will. But the words of spell magic still came to his lips often. He was spent. Beryl....the bloated bitch, had orders for him to be hunted down, for using magic in her domain with out express permission to do so.....she had hated Palin's Academy of Sorcery.....his place of study and learning.

He came to a tavern, and entered. Eyes focused on him, noting the robes of an abandoned religion. He soured. With the departure of his god, he had became somewhat twisted, fraught with grief, and so took little respite in the pleasentires he once did.

===Valadar's Intro===

~It had been... he couldn't even remember.. since he had seen Silvanost. .. So long ago, when all the Elves had dispersed, he had gotten seperated from his father. At the time he was being raised as a royal defender, an advanced warrior for the Speaker of the Stars. His sword-fighting technique was unmatched, he had been learning to use his inherent magic during combat, but now, his God, Paladine would not longer grant those powers. His faith hadn't been strong enough, perhaps, but the Gods have left, his magic going with them. But he was still an elf, still proud, and he still had his sword. The beautiful sword had an elongated handle- a somewhat larger than normal, open-faced pommel and a double-crossguard. The lower portion was a normal crossguard, extending 3 inches from the hilt on both sides, but the second portion curled upward toward the blade, rising up the length of the longsword for another 3 inches. The blade itself glimmered constantly, the Elvensteel blade was exceptionally sharp- strangely shaped- with prongs near the base of the blade, as well as slight changes in width along it's length. The center of it was adorned with darkly coloured runes of elven design, though their meaning lost to most- they spelled out the name of the sword - Melethakanara - the heart's shadow.

Valadar now resided in Qualinesti, just outside of the city of Qualinost. The Elves had looked to their distant cousin with some trepidation to begin with, but now things seemed fine, they had grown accustomed to having Silvanesti among them, as there were a few others elsewhere in the country. Valadar stepped into the tavern, his flashing, deep purple eyes casting glances this way and that before he nearly walked straight into a robed elf. He took the man in quietly- noting the robes of faith and then softly spoke, his voice drifted like velvet laying thick in the air~

"Pardon me."

~His voice gave no hint of being sorry for nearly walking into the man, but it also gave no hint that he was being rude are sarcastic. As such, his voice was simply monotone, he obviously had troubles he was preoccupied with. The scabbard containing his longsword slapped against his leg lightly, the silvery runes decorated on it glimmered in the torchlight in nearly the same fashion as his pale flesh did. His black hair hung in unrestrained locks down his mid-back and chest.~

Equi eyed the man darkly....he snorted and walked over to a table where he sat down, and ordered a glass of wine and something palatable to eat. He paid for a room and went up stairs, hoping to be left alone for a short while to meditate. He wished to scry somewhat. Perhaps take a peak at what the bloated green was up to.

~Valadar paid little mind to the look he was given. He considered it rude to have almost have bumped into the man, and he was sure the look was simply an instant reaction toward his own carelessness. He then walked to a table and took a seat near the door, he felt some anxiety and he wasn't sure why- thus, he wanted to be seated nearest the door, perhaps someone who entered would shed some light on his sudden feelings of anxiety and trepidation.~

Grummal Hearthfire could not believe his eyes when he saw Gerack walk into the Inn.

Grummal had escaped the dark knights wrath, but they had tortured and killed his family, and left him for dead. In the days following he had heard stories of the knights misdeeds to many a dwarven family. He held little hope that anyone he knew might have survived, but to his suprise, his friend stood right before his eyes.

Grummal blinked and rubbed his eyes, "Of all the places on Krynn", he said to himself.

"Let me guess....Stew and Ale" he said, standing behind the dwarf.

Kron had seen enough. Most of the people who had entered the inn looked trustworthy, especially the mage. The elf decided that he should be the one that Kron talked to. Mages knew all sorts of stuff, Hooded had, and that's why Kron couldn't kill him.

The elf picked himself out of the undergrowth and walked into the bar. Seeing the dark knights as he entered, Kron lowered his head and moved to the bar. "The mage, where did he go," questioned Kron?"Are you trying to make me look stupid in front of the other guests?"

He sat in his room. All was quiet. Aside from the voices downstairs that was. Equi then knelt down on the floor. Placing his two forefingers at either side of his head, he let the magic course and bent it to his will. Divination. The key to unlocking secrets......his mind brought forth the image of the bloaed green bitch, in her lair of magic and wealth, both of which she coveted well and truely.

There she lay, slumbering fitfully. But then her eyes darted open, and fixed on his mind. He broke the contact. "Drat!! ", he was slightly spent, he should have known she would sense him, her magicks were great, but not so that he couldn't defend himself. Of course, such use of power would leave him drained beyond respite. He had to get out of the Inn.....if she had sensed him, she would send her minions to gouge out his eyes and bring his near dead corpse so she could suck the magic out of him.

He hurried, swept the door open and left the room.

He descended the stairs in a rush, sweeping passed onlookers whose eyes he would not meet. He exited the Inn and walked swiftly away. In the shadows, a body moved. Then another, and another, they seemed to be living darkness, even his eyes could not pin-point them.

It was obvious Beryl had noticed him. He swore in elvish, then turned to face them. A soft globe of light kindled in his hands, warm, its heat increasing until he could hold it no more. He let the ball drop to the ground in front of him, intensifying the heat to create fire. The vibrant flames licked the air. He bent all his will of the fire, coaxing it with his mind. Something ran at him, silent feet, with a silent blade. He didn't hesitate, directing the fire, a gout of the searing heat slammed into the creature, its body, wreathed in flame, lay charred and still. Another came, and in response more flame.

But there were too many, he would soon drain. Already his head ached.

~Out of the darkness, the glimmering point- along with another foot of a blade appeared -stained with fresh blood, then the sword withdrew again and a bleeding body slumped lifelessly to the ground. The only sight to be caught was the whirl of long-black hair and the liquid movements of a sword in motion, then the head of another of the attackers was rolling across the ground as a weapon dropped to the ground- the body directly afterward...~

Three more of Beryl's accursed fell...leaving only a few more.....another fell, the fire still smoking the remains, but the last two fled, back to their mistress to report.

He would have to leave....she would hunt him herself after proving himself against her lackeys. Grummal put has hand on Gerack's shoulder, "Thank you, old friend" he said. He took a swig of his ale, then sighed "I am afraid our problems cannot be drowned in ale though", he said after some time.

Noticing someone hurtling down the stairs, he held on to his ale tight. It proved a worthless effort as he was josteled by other patrons moving out of the way, ale went all over his front. "Damn", Grummal had half a mind to follow the character outside and make him pay for the spilled contents.

Kel walked outside to get some fresh air. He could hear the soft rustling of the breeze swim through his soft, silver-spun hair like a fish through water. That's when he smelled the burnt flesh. Almost instantly, he went out to the back of the tavern and saw the two mages fighting the abominations of Beryl. One was using fireballs to ward off the creatures, and the other was channeling his power to the other.

He thought he should help, but he was next to uselss without magic of his own. He pleaded with all his heart, to help these mages. Then it came to him. It felt like a tingling sensation through his body, like it felt back in the days when he called upon the light of Paladine to use his clerical magic.

He coaxed it in his heart, in his mind as a prayer. Little did he know, he had just discovered the art of Mysticism, already practiced by Goldmoon and her followers, in the domain of Spiritualism. He called upon the departed spirit of Paladine to help him banish these abominations.

And so, the slowly, some of the creatures departed as if they sported great wounds. With his small help, the mages were able to send the creautes fleeing.

~Valadar narrowed his eyes slightly during the explanation, nodding every so often with what was being said and then tipped his head in ascent.~

Then we should go. I can do nothing here for our people or for Krynn, so I will go with you and add my strength to yours. Perhaps, I may rekindle my magic as you apparently have- then I could take the reins that I had been given so long ago with the mystic sword arts. We will find answers together, even if we must do so in the blood of Dragons and their minions.

~With that Valadar stepped closer, in the revealing torchlight it was clear that his body, from wrists to calves was covered in a glimmery chainmail. The chausses (pants) and tunic were obviously of fine elven make, so soft and strong that it was better than the inferior human-made mails, but it was soft enough to not impair any movement- while being light enough to again, not impair his swordsmanship skills. The elven chain glinted slightly, over it he wore a full cloak, though it had wide slits all along the lower portion that hung to his ankles to reveal the mail chausses. The sleeves fell only to the elbows with the same style of slits and across his hips he wore a black leather belt with silver runes etched into it and a tarnished silver buckle. His slightly pointed toe boots clicked against the ground as he moved closer.. the calf-height black leather boots sounded heavier than they were and the small chain that was strung under the instep rattled ever so slightly~

"HEY YOU ELF!"

~Valadar turned with all the other Elves and arched a black eyebrow~

Grummal had intended to leave the Inn in search of a quieter spot, but since the man who had caused him to spill his drink stood a few feet away, he thought he'd give him a peice of his mind.

"You see this", he pointed to the wet spot on his shirt. "You should be more careful, ale is a gift from the Gods" he said, the drink beginning to take effect. Grummal was well respected, but it was common knowledge throughtout dwarfdom that he handled booze like a human girl.

With that said, he made a motion to Gerack, "Come on, lets go".

He was excited, and frightened all at once. For a minute, he thought Paladine himself had granted him that power. Then, he remembered. It couldn't be. The power came from within, not from without. He knew Paladine was gone from the world, and that this magic was a magic born of all creatures. He knew the truth.

The power of enlightenment he felt, was from the ornately made platinum bracelet at his wrist, which still contained much of it's former power, probably activated by the spell he used to help the mages. It was an artifact from the far Age of Dreams, given to Paladine's favourite sons and daughters, as he had been before the Chaos War.

Back to reality, he heard the mages talking in low voices, and then the dwarf bursting outside with his partner besdie him. One was yelling loud enough to wake the bloated green bitch ((OOC:I was trying to refrain from using the "bloated green bitch" name for Beryl, but couldn't help meself ^-^)) herself in her lair.

He decided to intervene, and ask politely for the dwarf to settle down, and told him he would buy him and his partner a drink if they would return to the tavern and quit making so much noise. That done, he went over to the two elven sorcerers. He heard much of their conversation, and was interested in joining them. He wanted to help rid the forest of the green dragon and the knights, and free Qualinesti from her iron grip.

"I've heard much of you story, and I would like to help," he said boldly, more then he felt at the moment. "Your cause is what I have been looking for. I will not sit here and waste my life away with dwarf spirits and strong ale anymore. My talents in mysticism are great, and I can be of much use in the battle against the dragon." It was a lie, to say his talents in mysticism were great. He had only recently discovered the spark within himself, which he helped to grow with his sublime faith. With that, he waited to see if the two sorcerers were to accept him in their party.

Grummal did not make up his mind as quickly as the other dwarf. He wanted revenge against the knights, there was no question of that, but he knew little of this group. On any given day he loved a good fight, but he wasnt about to go putting his life into anybody's hands.

He stood for a few moments stroking his beard, contemplating the past events. The painful memory of his family and friends being tortured flooded his mind. The hatred he felt would only be quenched by the deaths of those who committed the evil.

He would go with these others, and honor the memory of those who died.

Checking to make sure his axe was secure on his back, he walked over the the group. "Where is it we are going?" he said.

Kel walks over to join them when suddenly- "Someone's here," he hissed. He heard a twig snap, something any self-respecting elf wouldn't do if they were trying to be stealthy or at all. It came from the forest, not far from the rest of the party. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, a poorly aimed (by elven standards) arrow came shooting out from the brush where he heard the snapping twig. Everybody else was alert, having also heard the noise.

The arrow was aimed for him, and hit him in the breast, right above his heart. He just stood there, transfixed, unbeleiving of what had just happened. He fell to his knees, clutching the arrow. He tried to rip it out on his own, but he was geting weak, and cold. So cold.... Someone went running into the forest, in search of the assassin. Then he heard someone run over to his, cradling him in their arms.

It was Rose, she was weeping over his body, trying to see what she could do to help him. Everyone else was circling him. The arrow had been inflicted with a very potent poison, and it he should be dead by now he knew. But the bracelet was keeping him alive. Knowing his life was forfeit, he knew what he had to do as his last act. His last words before he died were: "Take.. it..... use it.... well." Then his last breath escaped him in a sigh, as his body turned completely rigid, and his soul flied to Paladine. The platinum bracelet flickered faintly, for a second. The died down.

It was a powerful artifact from the age of dreams, and still contained much of it's magic like most other magical artifacts.

~Valadar's breath caught sharply as he heard the loosing of an arrow. His eyes darted and then he saw Kel, impaled by the arrow of an assassin, his lifeblood creeping slightly from the wound. Grimacing, Valadar shot through the thick woodland to find the killer, assuming the rest would do the same. His sword was still sheathed, but it would be out in only a flash of it was needed, still he roamed, not far from the rest of the party, his eyes seemed to catch a flicker for a moment, but he saw no distinct shape, nothing that betrayed the form of anything capable of weilding a bow.

Sighing, Valadar attempted to gather himself, whoever it was may be out of reach by now, or someone else caught him, in any event Valadar decided to return to the spot where Kel had been struck.. he looked down at the lifeless body sadly, thinking it such a waste of potential and of life. As he stood near, he silently awaited the rest of the party to return from their search for the assassin, lost in thought of what else may come in this journey.~

Kylie watched the mage rush out of the inn. Just like an elf, always running from something, she thought with a sneer, turning back to her ale. Suddenly, she choked and her eyes grew wide. The mage....she had seen him somewhere. He was an outlaw, his crime - using magic without Beryl's permission. The green dragon was offering a bag of steel coins for his capture.

Kylana jumped to her feet and tossed a few coins on the table to pay for her drinks. She strapped on her longsword, picked up her short bow and quiver of arrows, and wrapped her thick cloak around her shoulders. A chill wind blew her cloak out behind her as she opened the door to the inn and rushed out into the forest.

The mage and a few companions were just disappearing into the forest. Kylie decided to track the group for the time being, and hope that she could get the mage alone, away from his companions, to capture him. She didn't want to have to fight off a group of elves and a dwarf if she didn't have to.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kylie tracked the group for most of the day. Coming to a clearing just as the sun was setting, she decided to set up camp. She gathered small pieces of wood and built a tiny, smokeless fire for warmth. Huddling in her thick cloak, she shivered with the cold. Her armor, once enchanted by Takhisis herself to resist all temperature extremes, no longer kept her warm. A sound in the brush made her jump and grab her sword. Looking up, she spied a small, scrawny fawn with just enough meat on it for a couple of meals. Kylie quietly picked up her bow and drew an arrow. She sighted, let fly, and........missed.

"Damn!" Kylie swore angrily as the fawn bounded away. Her heart lurched when she heard a scream from the brush not far away. Kylie ran toward the sound, completely forgetting to take her sword.

She burst out into another clearing, not far from where she had set up camp. An elf was staring in shock at the arrow shaft in his chest. His companions, one of them the mage she was tracking, looked at her in anger and drew their weapons.

"Oh no!" Kylie exclaimed, her eyes as wide as saucers. "I didn't mean.....I didn't mean to shoot him!"

She backed up against a tree as his companions advanced on her, hate and death in their eyes.Peace and terror all in one, My future life has just begun.....

She had shot Kel.....a rage took him. Why? He didn't know this man at all....he didn't really know any of them. But his anger seethed none the less. He rose his arms, spreading them wide, welcoming into his heart a storm of emotions and power.

Winds buffeted his robes, throwing the wildly about, thunder rolled and the clouds blackend. Forked lightning shrieked from the heavens and struck the ground before the woman....."The next my lady will be you.....if you hesitate to tell us who you are and why you shot a comrade.....!!!"

His voice boomed as though it were the very thunder above....."Speak!!"

It was nearing nightfall, and the sun was reflecting on the water, giving it an orange-gold tint. 'Beautiful,' he said to himself. Then, without warning, he jumped and dived gracefully into the water. If any had seen him, they'd swear he just diseappeared after that. But, he had simply polymorphed into a fish and swam off.

He delighted in this particular form. Though it made him feel small, it gave him a different perspective on the way he saw things. His natural ability to polymorph also helped him win against many a dragon during the Purge. He would lead them on, until they got into a tight spaced area, then he would polymorph into a bird and wait. While his enemy was confused, he would return to his rightful form and pounce on his while he was unsuspecting. But, most of the time he fought honorably, even if his enemies didnt'.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

*He had found a new lair, in the mountains south-west of Thorbardin, where he lived in a cave behind a waterfall and had a grand view of the Plains of Dust. It was well hidden from the view of any dragon, protected further by magical wards. He lived well off the herds of wild oxen that passed frequently by the stream that was not far from his abode, as well as the wild pigs and the occasional camel.

His constant battle against the bloated green bitch led him to find a lair closer to the forest however. He constantly harrassed her forces of Dark Knight's, draconians and lesser dragons. He knew, that in a fair fight, that he should be able to beat Beryl. He was much bigger in size and strength, and didn't doubt his magic almost matched hers. But he would have to wait for that day to come, when he would rid the world of the Green Peril.*

The light sea breeze was refeshing, after a long and thoughtful swim in the Sirrion Sea, south-west of the Qualinesti wood. His red-gold scales shined in the soft light of the pale white moon. His immense body was curled in sleep, but his eyes were ever alert. He needed the rest, both from the long-term use of magic and the still taxing work of swimming for a long time. The cave under a bluff from which he was currently situated, hid him from the view of prying eyes and patrolling green dragons. He put a clever illusion on the entrance, making it look as if the cave was only large enough to fit a small gathering of sea turtles.

Fenthas was pleased with the work he accomplished earlier that day. He had successfuly raided a heavily guarded caravan containing many magic and non-magic items of great value that was destined for the hoard of the green Overlord. He was helped by the band of outlaws, the Night People led by the Lioness, in capturing some of the tribute that was leeched out of the Qualinesti people so brutally. He took some choice arcane artifacts for himself, and destroyed all the rest so it would be useless to Her.

Relaxing, Fenthas let his mind roam. The simple divination spell allowed him to see far away, deep in the forest of the Qualinesti. He passed many miles of forest and land with his mind, until he was on the outskirts of Qualinost. It showed him the picture of an inn, the 'Drunken Gnome' it read on a colorful sing posted by the door. Then he saw a silvery robed elven sorcerer come out, and was attacked by a small band of spawn. He fought them with his magic, and was aided by another sorcerer who added his own power to the fireball spell.

Then it showed him an elven man concetrating and whispering a spell, or a prayer he thought, aimed at the dragonspawn who were trying to get in close enough to fight the mages. He sae one loose a stream of chlorine gas breath at the mages, but it was quickly evaporated by the fireball that was aimed towards him. They made short work of the dragonspawn, and took a minute to recover. Then, they were talking with the elf mystic and the two dwarves, and were planning to go on a quest to fight the green dragon Overlord. Not too long after, when they were on the road, the elf mystic was shot by a badly aimed arrow and died shortly after.

He had on his wrist a powerful artifact from the Age of Dreams. He knew this, becasue he could sense it's power even through the spell of seeing. The other elves probably had no idea, except maybe the elven sorcerers. 'Such an arcane artifact of power could wreak great havoc in the hands of Beryl,' he thought to himself. 'I had better get it before she does..' Then it came to him. The dragonspawn were probably sent to fetch it for her, so that ment she already knew about it's existence in her domain. He would have to act quickly if he was to get it before her...

OOC: Just one thing. The only dragons that were able to absorb the essence of other dragons during the purge were the highlords as they had the totems(sp), that gave them the ability to do such. No other evil dragon or good for that matter was able to take the essence of another dragon.

Just adding that in, but it can be ignored.

((OOC:but then what was the point of the Dragon Purge anyway? i know where it says Malys is talking to a lesser green dragon, and tells him about slaying other dragons and absorbing their essence, but that later it reveals that the totems were for sculpting their realms. when Malys slays the first green dragon that tries to attack her, she absorbs the essence from the dragon when he died, sort a like his magical essence or something. and that was before she even had a lair and started collecting dragon-skulls for her totem. all dragons can do it. thats what makes them more powerful.

P.S all this info was from the book 'The Dawning of a New Age' from the 'Dragons of a New Age' trilogy, for the 5th age novel series :)))

His scrying had given him reknewed vigor and strenght, to pursue the platinum bracelet and get it before Beryl. He would have to keep it's powers secret from the sorcerers, whom would sell off all their other artifacts for it if they knew it's power.
But he wasn't worried about that at the moment. Fenthas stretched his bulk, as much as the small confines of the cave allowed. Then he dispelled the illusion, and polymorphed into a sea bird.
He couldn't get caught in his true form, or Beryl would send her minions after him, slowing down his mission.

He flew up the coast for a while, then he stopped under a nearby bluff, and polymorphed back into a dragon. He could sense trouble. There was a green surveying the area around the bluff.
He wasn't sure if the other dragon sensed his presence or not, but he couldn't take that chance. Suddenly, an emerald colored head poked out from the top of the cliff, with eyes narrowing when it saw him. It was now or never.

Fenthas roared his defiance, as he took wing and soared above the green. He wasn't going to waste any time, so he quickly dived in on it, but the green slithered out of the way, getting ready to aim it's deadly chlorine gas at him.
He banked to the right, just as the gaseous substance whizzed past him.

Then suddenly, a burst of magic energy hit him in the flank. He went realing to the left, and tried to turn and face his opponent.
But the green was already engrossed in another spell, a net of magical energy that would enveloppe him and send him hurtling to the gound like a rock.
He had to act fast. He quickly sent a bolt of lighting his way, but he avoided it by slithering out of the way just in time.

Once more, he banked to the right and flew upwards then turned towards the green. It was almost done his spell, to he sent another bolt his way.
It hit him square in the chest, knocking it backwards. Now was his chance. He dived in, and landed on top of him.
He started clawing and biting at him, he was struggling futilely. Fenthas was much larger and stronger than the small green. Then, he stopped moving altogether, as Fenthas succeeded in cracking it's spine.

A green aura was lifted from the dragon, and was absorbed by Fenthas. It envelopped him, and started to sink into his body.
It clung to his redish-gold scales for a moment longer, before sinking between them into his body. He fely stronger, more exilerated now.
That done, he donned the form of a bird of prey, and flew toward his destination: Qualinost.

OOC: 'Debate on the 5th Age' "Dragons, and Magic"

After the Chaos War, when the Gods left the worlds of Krynn, magic of High Sorcery as well as clerical god-grated magic was gone with them. Blah, blah, blah...... Sorcerery, Krynn's primordial magic, as well as Mysticism, the magic from within, were discovered. Blah, blah, blah...... Dragons, being creatures of 'inherent magic'* still retained much of their former power.
With the coming of the great dragons from across the sea, the native dragons of Ansalon were shoved into an all-dragon war in a fight for power. Weaker dragons were killed, and their 'magical essence'* was taken by the victorious opponent. Dragon Overlords, those who appointed themselves as such, are the dragons who have grown in power and strength and seized territories.

(I feel like I'm teaching a history lesson ^-^")

Most dragons go into hiding. Mettalic dragons return to the Dragon Isles where they hope to dwell in peace, but some stay on Ansalon and their are even some who seize territories themselves such as the brass dragon known as Splendor. Blah, blah, blah..... Dragon Overlords use the power from the skulls and brains of the dead dragons and place them in pyramid formation to sculpt their domains.
An example: Malys, the great red, turns the once fertile grasslands of the Dairly Plains into a barren wasteland, giving it the name Desolation.

Now, I can go on forever but the point is: Dragons, of any color, size, or power CAN absorb the essence of a defeated opponent to beomce stronger or more powerful. They do not need a pyramid of dragon-skull totems or have to be an Overlords to do so. If you need clearer or more precise information on the subject: read the "Dawning of a New Age" from the "Dragons of a New Age" trilogy, 5th Age novel series. :)

*Beings of inherent magic are creatures born with a natural knowledge and use of magic. These include: Irda, dragons, etc.

*Magical essence is described as being 'a mist-like substance in the colour of the defeated dragon opponent, that come out of it's body, and is pulled towards the dragon-victor and adds to his/her own magical essence/power.'

Fenthas skimmed the treetops, his feathered body looking much less peculiar and unwelcome to the forest occupied by the bloated green bitch. His mission was clear and fresh in his mind: get the bracelet.
He would have to find some way to capture it before the party took it and left. Such an artifact from the Age of Dreams is what the green Overlord has been searching for.
It would be a great prize, should it come in her into her slimy selfish hands. But he intended to get it first, and use it against her. He wasn't sure what it's powers were, but soon he would figure it out.

He was just passing over the city of Anianost when he started feeling as if he was being watched. He closed his eyes and concentrated, when he saw the face of Beryl sneering at him, in his mind.
She was probing him, scrying him like he couldn't do to her. And he almost didn't notice it. She was working powerful magic and probably destroying lesser magical artifacts to fuel her spell.
He grasped a small ruby ring that he brought along just in case, and started leeching it's power to add to his own. He was trying to block out the green's mind from his own.

He could feel her reading through his thoughts, and too late he realised she had gotten the information she needed to find the bracelet. He could feel her mind slipping away now, but an echoed laugh remained in his head for a long time after that....

Its power was incredible, but dark, destructive.....Surely its not.......she wouldn't risk it this soon......but then again she is the Highlord, i am but a mage........, his fear knotted his gut, caused his tounge to cleave to the roof of his mouth.

His eyes grew wide....turmiol ran through them, memories. He could barely encompass her power and awe.....such power demanded respect from even him.

"We...should....leave......now!", he turned to the others......"I think ......she.....is coming......."

~Valadar glanced from the woman to Equi, arching a brow and noticing the look on his face, he simply nodded his agreement~

You've heard the Mage. Perhaps we should be going. Someone needs to take to the underbrush around the path, make sure nothing comes our way again without notice. If you see anything, make a bird call.

~Valadar then turned back to Equi before even checking to see if the others had moved and stepped up beside him, his own hoodless, slitted cloak tossling about his legs to reveal the soft but ever-strong chainmail beneath, the same chainmail that covers his otherwise exposed arms~

Do you think they know what they're getting into?

For the moment she was probing his mind, he probed hers. It casued a link between them, so it was a risky spell to use. But she was confident, and she wanted to have her thought known so he would be in danger of the her.
Her intentions were to retrieve the artifact personally, such an powerful arcane item was beyond the grasp of most other Overlords and would serve her power greatly. He also got a glimpse of the knowldge of it's inner power.
The platinum bracelet not only had the power to heal serious or minor wounds, it also could save one from dying as well as make a shield of arcane energy surround the user's body and repel any magic attack against the user.
He suspected she had leeched the knowledge from an elven sage or sorcerer. For such knowledge was not well known.

The clearing was now in sight. He swiftly flew in through the illusion of a forest canopy. He could feel Her great presence even here, coming nearer by the minute.
The small form of the bird of prey went unnoticed by the companions. He landed on the still form of the elven mystic, and poked at the bracelet with his talons.
He could feel the magic pulsing through it, with such power unimaginable. It cleverly discuised its power, which was the reason neither of the two mages had sensed it yet. But it was a power that dragons were sensitive to, and he and Beryl both felt it.

Then some of the companions were looking at him now, wondering why he was desecrating the body. Then there was one who came to shoo him away.
But he nimbly jumped away, and flew upwards. His body began to grow, his feathers adopting a red-goldish sheen. His small, beaked face was becoming larger and more equine, to reptilious. Then his talons turned to claws, and his feathers to bronze scales.

He finished the transformation, and he stood tall to let the elves and two dwarves stare at him in awe. The elven sorcerers were already preparing spells, in case of hostility.
He smiled grimly, but they were unaware. Dragons seldom had the need for facial expressions. "Relax, friends," he said softly, his voice rich and strong. "I have come to help. I am Forlentasth the Bronze, and my help is greatly needed here." His eyes bored into those of Equi's.
He looked into his mind, his intentions and his soul. He judged him a good man, or elf.

"The Green Peril has reasons to be greatly interested in more than one item in this glade." He glanced at Equi, a knowing look in his eyes. "And I have come to retrieve one such item, and take it out of her grasp."
He looked at Kel, whom had been properly wrapped in a blanket and was to be buried soon. None had dared take any of his possesions, even though some coveted the platinum bracelet spoken of.
It glowed with an iridescent light, alternately pulsing white and silver. It reacted to the great quantity of power in the area, him and the two sorcerers. 'And of Beryl,' he thought. She was fast approaching, and they needed to be ready to confront her.

"Thank you," Kylie said quietly. "If you want to defeat Beryl, you'll need my help. I know where she lairs, her troop distribution and placement, and how to avoid the Dark Knights."

Why, she thought. Why am I joining a group of elves, my enemies, in a quest to defeat the overlord that I serve? Do I no longer wish to be a part of the Order? Where does my heart lie?

"I guess..." she started. The elves turned to look at her, their eyes boring holes into her heart. She felt she at least owed them an explanation as to why she was joining them. "...I guess my heart, my soul is no longer with the Order. They used to have a cause, a purpose. They used to have honor. Now they've thrown all that away, and have become slaves to a dragon. I've watched them kill innocent elves and pike their heads on the Eastern Bridge in Qualinesti. The Knights say its because they were rebels, but I say those elves were patriots!" Kylie was on her feet now, her eyes wide, as she spoke her empassioned words. "Why should anyone sit by while an army marches over them? They fought back bravely, like the rest of Qualinesti should, and they died bravely as well. I no longer wish to see innocents slaughtered for amusement or to serve as 'examples' to a frightened population. Yes, I WILL join you, and together, we will find a way to free Qualinesti from Beryl's tyrrany!"

Suddenly, Kylie's blood ran cold, and a shadow inched over her heart. Her knees quaked in terror, and her mouth became dry as cotton.

"Beryl..." she said from between chattering teeth. "She comes....."

Beryl may be powerful, but the bloated slug is a half wit, for all her cunning and intelligence, she usually fools herself more often that not!! Don't tell me of my limitations human.....so far i haven't begun to show them.....", he was growing tense, did he mean to lash out like that, or where the dwarf and human simply stating his own silent fears.

The appearence of the bronze helped to settle his fear slightly, but he was having second thoughts about letting the beast take any sort of possessions that had belonged to Kel.....he started towards the body however Kylie's whisper cut to his heart.....She comes....

Suddenly a gust of power air surged pased them all.....a huge claw gouged out the earth before him. A hideous laughter had filled the crisp night air, turning it to the chill of death. "Its Beryl....!!!!!!", No? Really?, he thought to himself bitterly.

She had fooled them, her magicks blinded her true distance, she had been closer the whole time.....but he reacted. Her disfigured head lowered, coming close to the ground. He had his chance. But her voice caught him off guard. " Welcome mortals.......my my.....i must say this is an assorted group, elves, human, dwarf.....and another.", she grinned, sinister and terrifying. Equi dropped to the ground, placed his hands on it and focused his energies. From beneath Beryls head, two great hands of stone rose up, grabbing the green around her throat and began dragging her under the mud.....

"Now....run!!", but he stood his ground, facing the dragon to give them the chance to flee. The hands stood little chance, she shattered the rock with a simple flick of her massive head. "Very nice little mage.....creative i must say, but parlor tricks won't get you any where." She enhaled, then breathed her chlorine gas at the group. A wild wind picked up. It carried the gas, twisting it upwards till it dissapated. "Again....clever mage.....but still to no avail." She bent all her will against them.....their little skirmish had just begun.
