Himiko (Him-eh-Ko) hid, her heard pounding aginst her chest. "Come on out my little prize...Himiko? Where are you hiding?" came the voice of Duke Rastor. Himiko nearly broke cover as panic filled her mind.

Once a Cleric of Mishakal, Himiko was captured by Duke Rastor in hopes of adding her to his collection....Birds. All kinds, colors and sizes where locked in beautiful gold guilded cages. Birds that where once beautiful women...Just like she once was.

"Help us! Help us!" These Birds sang, Pleading with her. But she couldn't...for the spell cast on them...was cast on her as well. Himiko fled, terror filling her heart. She hid high in a tree in the hopes that the dark night would hide the bright blue plumage of her new form.

Himiko curled her swan-like neck and ruffled her feathers as a chill snaked up her spine. Rastor cursed expressively and turned to walk back towards his estate. Himiko watched him till he faded from her sight. IN the Darkness, her trembling form slowly relazed. As Dawn approached, a Blue Phoenix burst free from the trees, soaring high.

She flew hard and far...the sun moved from ahead to behind when she simply could not fly any further. Himiko faltered and fell. A bright spot of blue falling in the darkening summer sky. Himiko struck the ground, her right wing snapped, and she lay there, half on and half off a well traveled raod just outside solace.

((OOC: Okay, I'll play the Duke (and various other bad guys and probably some good, hehe) but I'd just like to say that I really don't like his name. :)))

"Damn!"

A swirling gray cape announced the arrival of Duke Rastor back into his lavish estate. Birds twittered and servants ducked into shadows as it was obvious that their master was not in the best of moods...

"DAMN! WHY?"

The Duke stormed into his room--a chamber as large as most people's own houses and filled with more magical items than existed on the rest of the continent--and threw his fist into the wall.

There was another faint curse, another scattering of servants and then the big house was silent. Even the numerous birds that flittered around the cavernous rooms stilled their wings and sorrowful voices.

"You lost her, didn't you?"

The Duke, startled by the lilting voice, collasped onto the scarlet sheets that covered the bed that stood at the center of his room. He looked up slowly--his silver eyes tearing--and nodded.

The voice sighed and there was a soft rustle of wings. A scarlet phoenix exited the shadows and came to land beside the sobbing Duke--the only free bird in the whole estate.

"She would have been the second...and the rarest."

"I know, I know..." the Duke answered. He paused and then looked the phoenix straight in the eye. "I promise you that your sacrifice will not be in vain...even if I have to go through a million more maidens!"

If the bird could have frowned, she would have. This wasn't what she had had in mind when...he didn't have to listen to the pleads of those maidens everyday...everynight...

But it was no use to argue. It was past time for that. Now the most important thing was to catch the blue...

"I'll go," she said so quickly she would have bit her tongue had she had one. "She'll trust me if I play it right..."

He stood up and shook his gray robes, organizing their folds even as he regained control. "No. There mustn't be several sudden sightings. They will start asking questions. And we both know what happens then. Do not go against me on this, Ziin. I will place you with the others."

Ziin started to ruffle her feathers indignantly out of habit before realizing he was right and that he would in fact do that to her. Dipping her head in acknowledgement, she said softly, "Yes, beloved."

His hard gaze didn't soften and he left the room--shutting the door--too quickly for her to follow. She sighed and whispered to no one:

"Please husband...be careful. Don't lose sight of..." she broke off bitterly and returned to her perch to ride out the day.

----------------------------------------------------

Duke Rastor stalked through the halls of his own house, a glower on his face. "It's for the good of...yes, the good...my responsibility..." he muttered darkly.

"Heya Boss," Nanyor grunted, not bothering to look up from his chicken leg dinner. Rastor growled and yanked the tracker off his feet, slamming him into the wall.

Nanyor didn't even looked surprised. "Lost a good'un this time?"

"The cerulean phoenix," Rastor said through clenched teeth. The tracker's eyes widened.

Deletreeus (Deh-leh-tree-us) left Solace with some excitement in his step. He was headed home to Qualinesti for the first time in years. His mind was lost in the memories of his homeland. The greenery, the smells, the sounds of the wildlife. Delt as he so often was called was particularly fond of birds, which is why he left home in the first place. He had left on a journey to find and observe birds not native to the woods surrounding Qualinesti. Now after thirty years of exploring he was tired and ready to head home.
He caught a small blue streak out of the corner of his eye, and knowing how dangerous it was for a lone elf to travel his hands went immediatly to two daggers he had hidden on his body. Delt was very good at throwing daggers and had them hidden in many places all over his body. This helped him keep his hands free when traveling. This way when he by chance came across a new bird he could log it into his journal.
To his delight and dismay he discovered the blue streak was an injured bird. This was a bird unlike any he had seen in his travels. He slowly approached the bird, not wanting to startle it. This was one of the first skills he had learned in dealing with birds and since he was elven moving quietly outdoors was that much easier. He noticed the bird had snapped her right wing. Delt quickly and selflessly ripped a swath of cloth from his cloak and carefully wrapped it around the birds wing.
"There now." he whispered, "I know this isn't much, but it should help until I can get better supplies to heal that wing of yours." Delt, while keeping an eye on the bird, then pulled out his journal to write about this remarkable creature he stumbled across.

(OOC::forgive me for asking, but how big is the bird. I have an idea of what a phoenix is, but I forget how big they are.)

OOC: for starters...Phoenixes are usually a little bigger than a Swan. And Star...No I have no real plot line...the beginning for this was based off of an old fairy tale that I barely remember...so have fun! Also Rastor is the Evil Guy's last name...not first...have fun dear!

BIC: Himiko opened her eyes weakly and glanced at the elf. She blinked...once...twice...then spirialed back into the darkness.

She remembered the party...she had been sent to Duke Rastor's estate for a Ball that he was having. She had been talked into one of her dances that she had done in her years before becoming a Cleric.

She agreed, and bound up her hair. She accepted the dancing costume that Rastor had given her...though in her mind it was a little skimpy, but she was told to do as Rastor asked...so she danced. She failed to really notice the way that he stared at her...how he seemed ultimately pleased that she called upon the Goddess to aid in her performance...and how pleased he was when the Goddess replied.

She remembered the sudden darkness as she fell asleep under Rastor's spell....and how all the "Guests" suddenly faded from sight...revealing Rastor's trap.

Himiko opened her eyes and weakly looked up at the elf. "Help me" came her musical voice.Storms Do not respond to heartfelt pleas

As the bird looked at Delt, he could only wonder what was possibly going through her mind. Then the bird feinted. "This is more serious than I thought." he whispered to himself, still not wanting to startle the injured bird. Delt considered what options he had which were few, however, he knew it was his duty to nurse the phoenix back to health.
He could take her home to Qualinesti with him, but that was still a long way away. Delt figured he wouldn't be able to carry her that far. He could however take her to the nearby Solace, but even though Solace was accepting of outsiders, Delt prefered to avoid human settlements. It wasn't so much that he destested humans as most of his brethren, but he just wasn't to trusting of them. Humans didn't share his outlook on life. They could be very violent, evil, devious, and arrogent. Their predjudice towards elves was well known throughout Qualinesti. Very few humans could be trusted, which is why Delt avoided human settlements when possible.
Haven was also near, but that would be worse than going to Solace. Having considered his options he had no other choice but to settle on Solace. He would rent a room, gain the supplies he needed, and nurse the bird back to health. The trick would be sneaking a rare bird like this into the inn. Delt removed the rest of his torn cloak and wrapped it around the slumbering phoenix.
It was at this time that she look up at him and said, "Help me". Delt's eyes widen with shock. A talking bird! He took a few steps back in shock. Delt had never seen or even heard of a talking bird. This was an even greater find the he originally figured. Quickly removing his journal he jotted down a few ideas he had at the time for future reference.
He slowly approached the bird again, hands in front of him. "Yes precious one, I intend to help you. I am going to carry you to the nearby town of Solace. There I intend to return you to your full strength." He paused and bent down to lift her. He spoke in a soft whispered tone, "Don't be alarmed, I am going to carry you. If you could as well, be silent. I would like to not draw any attention to us. There we can get you the rest and medicine need to get you well."
Hoping the bird didn't have the strength to fight back, he carefully scooped up the bird wrapped in his cloak and began walking toward Solace.

Delt was suprised but the sudden appearance of Varen. So startled he almost dropped the bird. When he regained his composure, he examined the man. Wonderful, he thought to himself, a human. While Delt was not too fond of humans he was at least cordial to them. The elves of Qualinesti didn't have the greatest reputation of accepting humans, but it was improving and Delt didn't want to ruin it.
He spoke in soft tones so as not to scare his patient. "No, thank you sir, but I am fine." He then swiftly brushed past the man and headed once again towards Solace.
As he departed from the man he began to think the situation through. It was possible that this man knew of a place that would be better than some dirty, dingy inn. And after all this man did have some sort of honor, that much was clear with his formal introduction. Paladine must be smiling on him he thought. The more he thought about it this was a good sign, maybe even Paladine's will. He abruptly stopped in his tracks, and turned to face the now good samaritan.
He smiled at Varen and bowed, as best as he could with the bird. "Forgive my selfishness, a place to heal this magnifcent animal would be nice. I will go to your 'perfect place' " he answered. "My name is Deletreeus of Qualinesti and I hope you were not offened by me initially turning your offer down."
Delt made sure once again the cloak was wrapped tight and the bird was safe. Once he was satisfied he looked to Varen. "Lead the way good sir. Lead the way to your 'perfect place' "

Vort supprised at Delts first action was even more supprised by his second. " Oh Yeah! Just follow me"he said in a very kind tone! As the elf and him walked threw the populated erea of Solace he did his best to avoide on lookers (because like the elf he found humans rude and ignorent). All of a sudden he took a sharp left from the main street. Finally he placed his eyes upon a small but comftorble home. "Welcome the my home, Nobody ever comes here and it has some of the greatest erbs in all of Anslon fow anamal cure. Did i tell you i love birds and would die for one? As they walked in the house (varen didn't wait for an answer for his queston) the elf saw a very 'perfect palce' for anamals and he also sow a very large section of the house completley devoted to birds. Varen whisted and many birds (EXODIC) flew threw the window and started to collect supplies for Varen to tend the Pheonix's wounds.

(OOC: Varen has already seen many birds before including a pheonix that had almost killed him in his travels.

Du'Kuli watched from the trees as the fellow elf and the human took the injured bird back towards solace and decided to follow them. He kept himself hidden and silent so as not to draw the elfs attention. He landed just on the edge of the forest using a soft updraft of air to slow his decent.

Du'Kuli was an elf. Though could be considered a half elf. He had been the result of a dark mages twisted experiment of combining two beings, so he had combined Du'Kuli with an air elemental. Pleased with the results, the evil wizard had started to corrupt more lives. Some failing others succeeding. But in a fit of rage....Du'Kuli broke free of the mages control and killed him. The combination however had proven beneficial for him. The abilities if the air elemental allowed him to control certain aspects of the weather such as wind, rain and lightning. It had greatly enhaned his already stealthy skills of an elf, making him even more wift and agile.

The bird had caught his attention as it fell from the sky, but not wanting to draw too much notice upon himself he let it be for a few moments. Thankful that the elf had came along when he did.

His gentle and serene nature wanted to take care of the bird but thought it best to let the human tend to the bird as he seemed to know what he was doing.'From earth to sky, from leaves to roots,

((OOC: Hey Vortex, Kriegor...one word: paragraphs. :)))

Nanyor stood over a small canyon, his arms spread wide to recieve the howling winds. His sparkling eyes were closed, his ears straining to hear the voices the breeze carried for any who cared to listen.

The Druid-turned-mercenary had been hired by the Duke Rastor for his rare ability to speak to the four winds a few months ago and effectively told nothing. But Nanyor's talents ran deeper than that. He had learned things...learned that the Duke was a man obsessed and searching for the answer to a prophecy.

Nanyor had never actually heard the prophecy but he had been able to get the gist of it. The Duke was looking for three magical beings, beings that could, when hit with the right magic, turn into the Three Phoenixs.

Each one of the primary colors, Rastor had had the first--red-- from the begining. Nanyor suspected that there was something deeper between the Duke and the red phoenix but it was a carefully guarded secret.

And now he had lost the blue. What does he need them for? Nanyor asked himself, sighing when the answer was not forthcoming. That had been the hardest thing to figure out. Supposedly the three beings together would bring about some good but the merc couldn't be sure of the Duke's stability...

Realizing that he was wasting his magic, the mercenary turned his attention back to the winds and learned of the path the blue had taken. Starting his journy, Nanyor cleared his mind to rest it...this riddle would wait.

------------------------------------------------------------

Duke Rastor paced around his study. He didn't trust Nanyor, didn't trust him to keep his mind where it belonged...but he did trust him to get the woman back. The cleric...he needed her.

Throwing his hands up in frustration, the Duke went back to directing the servants. He had found another possibility...a young elf who might be the third...the yellow...

The servants were remaking a large portion of the estate into a more elven dwelling...fit for a princess and unresistable.

Himiko tucked her head beneath one Vibrant blue wing...the feathers seemed to be lit with an inner fire. The colors of each feather shifted from deep, dark blue to a near white brilliance, making Himiko look as if consumed by a blue fire.

Sorrow and grief for her seemed fate weighed heavily on Himiko's mind...she seeked and found comfort in Her Goddess's love. She felt the two strangers...one elf, and one human...tend to her broken wing. She raised her head, and stared at them. The depth of her stare startled the men...showing that this was no mere phoenix they where dealing with.

The eyes of the Phoenix where more human-like than bird, and a bright blue...almost brighter than her feathers. She stared at them, and without opening her beak...she spoke. (OOC::Sorry about my lack of paragraphs, if you look, I am actually paragraphing, I am just having trouble with the board. Knowing what I can and can't do.)

BIC::The home did seem a bit meager for Delt, but it did beat the small cramped space of an inn. Once inside, he focused on the bird. Delt had to credit the Varen, the home did contain a large number of herbs. Not quite everything he hoped for, but in a pinch they would do.

Delt set the bird on a nearby empty table and immediatly went to work removing the cloak. He very carefully removed the torn cloth from around the broken wing. Grabbing the proper herbs he needed he mashed and mixed them as best he could and gently rubbed it into the wing. He then quickly rewrapped the wing using some clean cloth he had found lying around. The entire process took about an hour.

Delt stepped back to admire his work. While he was looking it over, his gaze fell to the bird's eyes. There was something bizzare about this bird. He knew this was no ordinary bird, but this bird seemed...almost human. The eyes were round like that of a human. Even the way it moved seemed clumsy like a human, unlike the graceful movements of other birds he had observed. The birds feather were brighter than Delt remebered, it was as if it was on....FIRE!! Delt's wanted to put the blaze out quickly, but his body did not move. This fire was not consuming it. The fire was coming from the bird itself. Delt couldn't help but stare at this bird in awe. He watched it for what seemed to him hours, when he heard a voice.

"Thank you strangers for helping me...I would've died there on the road had it not been for your kindess.... " Delt looked all around him in disbelief. That didn't come from Varen, and he didn't see anyone else here. He turned back to the bird.

"Did you just say something?"

"My name is Himiko..." he heard her reply.

Delt bowed to her, "My pleasure to meet you Himiko. I am glad I was able to help you, and if I may. I would like to ask a few questions like, Who are you? Where did you come from? But more importantly, Where are you headed?"

Delt listened to Himiko's words. He heard some noise from where Varen went. It sounded like he was dropping something heavy and metallic. A cleric of Mishakal. This left him somewhat confused. He stood in silence a moment before he spoke. Himiko seemed quite shaken from her ordeal. Delt spoke in his soft tones, "Calm down Himiko, the evil man is not here. You are safe here. I will protect you from that evil man. But I do have another question. If you are not naturally this gorgeous bird, how did you become so?"

Any other questions he had were interupped with Varen's reentrance into the room, dressed in full Solemnic armor. Delt held his composure, but could have cringed. Knights were known for their stubborness and up until recently their predjudice towards elves. Laurana, known to them as the 'Golden General' had helped ease these tensions. Well, I am stuck with him for now. Varen appeared ready to go take on an army. Typical knight

Delt raised his hands slowly, "Hold there friend. I know not where it is you want to go, let alone who you want to battle. This bird is in no shape for travel. We know not who this evil man is, where it is, let alone what he is planning. I would suggest we stay here while Himiko heals, and plan some course of action. One cannot go charging after someone labeled 'evil'. She needs some time to heal."

Delt turned from the knight, hoping his words could penetrate that thick armor. What to do indeed.

He has hundreds of them all imprisoned in golden cages. I didn't see any other phoenixes though...but that doesn't mean much. What I saw where birds of all kinds... All I remember is that he seemed estatic when he saw my form after he did the spell. "

She paused and folded her wings agian. "Thank you for the salve...I might be able to think clearly enough to heal myself..." she murmered. Shecurled her swan-like neck and touched her beak to her chest. "Mishakal...Goddess of compassion and Healing...Guide my heart in your ways...Heal my wounds so that I may try to free those who have been wronged."

Turning his black cloak inside out so that it shown a Druid green, Nanyor walked over to the tree and leaned against the trunk. The stranger noticed him immediately, and the merc made a note not ot underestimate this one.

"You know it is not polite to spy as such; however, I suppose I can overlook it as I require the same information as you appear to be gathering. I am a Druid and I was told that a rare bird, injured, was brought here. Delt's eyes lit up at Himiko's mention of the hundereds of caged birds. How he would like to see that. However what this man was doing was wrong. Birds were not meant to be prisoners for eye candy. They were supposed to roam free in the wild. The more he thought about it the more angry it made Delt. Not only that, these birds were not natural, they were from some form of witchcraft. For all he knew there could be some elf maidens trapped there. This made Delt's blood boil. He had heard enough. He was ready to liberate these prisoners, but alas I cannot go anywhere until Himiko is fully healed he thought.

When he looked at her again, she was stretching her wing without any sign of pain. Delt stood amazed for a moment then remember she had once been a cleric of Mishakal. "Excellent. Glad to see you are well again Himiko. If you are fit to travel, I suggest we leave this place."

It was about this time that Varen started handing out his gifts. Delt examined the crossbow, but handed it back to Varen. "Thank you sir for the gift. But I do not need it. I don't like to carry anything that could hinder my hands. I fear with that on my wrist, it would only slow my hands down."

He turned again to Himiko. "Are you willing to travel back to this evil man? How do you know he does not have someone out looking for you?" Delt jokingly pointed his thumb out the window in the direction of the two onlookers, "There could be someone out there now looking for you. Are you sure you want to make is life that much easier? However if that is where you wish to go, I shall escort you. Varen seems anxious to go too."

Delt looked out the window, "We have already lost half a day, so if we are going to leave we had better and gain what ground we can." Delt picked up his torn cloak, brushed it off and fastened it around his neck. He opened the door and took his first step on this rescue mission.

Himiko seem quite anxious to leave. Delt had to admit he was ready to leave as well. He was uncomfortable everywhere except the forest. Right before he was to leave, Varen moved quietly to the door. Delt was actually impressed with this human. Even though he wore a large amount of metal, he made little sound with his movement.

"What's wrong?" he whispered. Varen replied by tapping his sword. It would seem the bird is in greater danger than Delt had originally thought. His hands quickly disappeared into his tunic only to quickly reappear. In each hand he held two specially crafted throwing daggers (four total). He crept to the other side of the door peering out. He saw an elf, and what looked like a druid. His original thought was, there was no harm here. But Delt was no fool. If Varen was cautious about these two, Delt trusted Varen's gut reaction.

Delt looked over to Varen, "Is there a back way out of here?" he whispered so softly Varen had to strain to hear him. The trick here would not be sneaking out the back, but sneaking out the back with Himiko, without drawing the attention of the two 'visitors' outside. Fortunatly, they seemed to be concentrating on each other. Delt hoped this would be just enought to escape unnoticed.

He grumbled as a spiderweb crossed his grim features and kept pondering his situation. Mere seconds later, as if in answer, a loud rumble issued from the tunnel ahead.

Frowning, the mercenary sank into shadow and crept forward to see what was going on.

"Come out, come out wherever you are..." It was the voice of the one who had lead them here...his voice grated on Nanyor's nerves and the merc had to take a deep breath to keep from launching forward and cutting the fool's head clean from his shoulders.

"My dear, how lovely you look! Thou hast stolen the breath from my heart..."

The young elf blushed and the Duke bowed low as an excuse to kiss the soft skin of her slender hand. Her checks flooded with scarlet and she turned away shyly.

"My lord, you are too kind...surely there are other things of beauty here that so occupy your heart...that lovely creature, for example..." The elf gracefully indicated the scarlet Phoenix that perched nearby on a golden dowl. Ziin ruffled her feathers and spread her wings in response, putting on a show for the elfchild...so young...

Maybe this is wrong...maybe it doesn't matter...there could be a way to... Too late.

"Dearest! You are as beauty as my pet...your smile, your golden hair..." A small glint of eager greed entered the Duke's eyes but the elfchild didn't noticed. She just blushed again and started to protest.

"Allow me to show you," the Duke interrupted sweetly. He lead her, hand in hand, to a small room that glittered with silver candles. Her mouth formed a perfect o as she gazed around. Shadows danced slowly along the walls as if they lived for her pleasure; soft music drifted just beyond reach, calming but never interrupting a thought...

She entered as if in a daze and barely noted that the room was empty. Her large eyes were fixed on the mirror that stood in the middle of the room. It was freestanding, almost floating, and surrounded by a soft silver aura and showing a reflection of the stunned elf.

Even as she gazed on, her reflection smiled at her, a beautiful smile that made her heart ache and her eyes tear. It was her as she had never thought of herself...the reflection laughed silently and twirled happily, liquid grace in a skirt. The elf responded with a laugh of her own and twirled too till she was practically dancing with her twin. She was radiant...her eyes vivid...her skin perfect...her smile eternally happy...

When the golden phoenix appeared from the distance, the elf laughed in delight. The Duke, too, smiled; his hair plastered to his skull with sweat, his hands trembling as he worked the magic. Ziin sat just to the side, her image did not reflect in the mirror...she had come here to call it off, to stop her husband...but the picture of the golden phoenix had come first and there was no stopping now...

The elfchild continued to dance even as the magical bird neared her image. They began to merge and the elfchild sighed in happiness, not noticing that she was becoming smaller or that her skin tingled with down...

The Duke almost laughed in triumph. The laugh came out as a gasp and one hand went to his chest...the magic faltered...

The elfchild screamed as the magic tore at her. Her hand went to her mouth as it began to harden and she screamed again at the soft golden feathers that had emerged from her hands.

"FINISH IT!" Ziin yelled. If her husband couldn't, the elfchild would die...

The room went dark as the candles hushed before anguished cries. The magic wore itself out...the Duke laughed horsely before falling to the ground...and Ziin was left, listening to the soft tears of a newborn Phoenix.

The sound of footsteps could be heard from off to the left, perhaps a hundred paces distant. Slowly striding into view, a woman in her mid-twenties, clad in black dragonscale armor, inky hair pulled back in a braid. Her chiseled, sharp features would normally suggest elven blood, but by her height and the manner she carried herself, this was a pure human. Shadowy cape billowing out behind her was hampered by a crossbow slung over her right shoulder, and trotting at her side, a mature female gray fox that seemed to be wearing a perpetual smile. The lady did not seem to notice those before her, for her eyes were fixed on the road, hands clasped behind her back. She wore no jewelry save for a simple silver ring on her right index finger- an old artifact, to be sure.
As the woman at last raised her head and stopped in her tracks, startled into halting, her eyes at last became obvious. As golden as polished amber, they held a worldly and somewhat shrewd aspect to them, fierce as the wild hawk's, slanted slightly upwards.
"Forgive me- am I intruding?" she asked with a slight bow. "Ebonymist Hai Draco, at your service.""With each kill I grow wiser, and with added wisdom, I become stronger." -Artemis Entreri

Du'Kuli appraised the new comer....the wind whispered words of caution, but not immediate danger. True there was something odd about her. But he ignored the winds for now. He extended a hand to her. "Du'Kuli Stormbringer....a pleasure to meet you." He regarded the bird and other companions with a slight unease, he was unsure wheather this new one would be accepted. Their 'mission', was somewhat precarious and they couldn't afford to let anyone in they didn't particulary trust. Mind you, he doubted the majority of those here trusted each other, for one he didn't trust the Druid, his part was confusing, his alligence fragmented most likely. Til the heart's blood boils or the bones be ash,
til the tallow be dust and death's teeth gnash
this one be mine.....

Himiko stared at the newcomer...and wondered if it was wise to allow another.... She shruged her wings and flew over. "Greetings...What brings you here?" She asked softly, refraining for now to mention their misison.Though sometimes the pain is part of love
and our hearts get cut in two,
and pain is so intense
Its alright

Love it gives us all our dreams,
its inside courage too
in the light, shining on
burning forever

Nanyor sighed softly, eyeing the newcommer and wondering if she was going to get in his way. He didn't like the added complication--nor the fact that they were headed for the palace. If they hadn't been, he would have taken the bird now and been done with it...

But they were headed for the palace with some foolish notion of defeating the Duke and setting the birds free. And Nanyor knew, even if he didn't like it, that if the Duke believed he had delivered the phoenix into his hands--and left the ultimate capture and triumph to his lordship--the merc's reward would be all the greater.

It was an uneasy situation and he had the feeling that all these companions weren't going to help. Well, at least he wouldn't have to deal with them himself when they reached the palace...and yet...

Leaning forward into the glare of the fire, the merc pretended to use his magic to stir the dying fire--if Du'Kuli was watching--and sent the wind instead to suggest to the weary phoenix that perhaps the only one she could trust was the Druid...he was the only one that understood, that cared for her plight...he was the one she should ask if she felt the need to run...

The magic died almost immediately as the mercenary wasn't willing to risk anymore. The wind was known to whisper and he had been careful to hide his hand from the spell...

((OOC: I'm adding this as the description of the grounds around the Duke's palace cuz I want to and because you guys can use it when we get there if you wish.))

Wings rushed higher and higher until her head spun with the lightness of the air and the glare of the rising sun. She had to get away, had to escape...she had spent the last couple of days talking to the young elf who was her husband's latest victim. This one was the most timid she had seen thus far and it broke Ziin's heart...

In fact, it had hurt her so much, she had gone against her husband and explained everything to the young maiden. It hadn't helped and Ziin had finally had as much as she could take.

And so she was soaring above the grounds, losing herself in the sights that never ceased to amaze. Acres of forest surrounded the palace, thick, lush and impassable. Her husband enjoyed employing Druids and gardners and over the years had fashioned the various trails within the thick wood into a maze of massive proportions. Dark and twisted, the canopy shaded most of the paths from light, but for those scattered places of peace...luring fountains, fruit trees and finches greeted weary travelers who more often then not, had no idea where they were going.

Nor did they know of the guardians.

Ziin sighed. She could pick out the various traps very well by now and they pained her, though it was all for the greater good...

Everything her husband did was for the greater good.

She had to believe that.

Had to.

"I am simply a traveler, wandering this land," the woman replied. "What a magnificent creature!" she added, looking to the blue phoenix. Her praises trailed slowly off as she noticed the expressions the others wore. Ebonymist's face grew suddenly serious. "But I sense you have some pressing buisness to attend to. It hangs over your heads like a dark cloud. Perhaps I can help? For I am an accomplished fighter and know full well how to cover up signs of my passing. I wouldn't have survived the War of the Lance if I didn't." Something strange tinges her voice when she mentions the War of the Lance- bitterness, perhaps. But her appearence and manner suggests a Solamnic, dedicated to Paladine.
