Oathbound takes place in a world where Magick is commonly used and people take Oaths with spirits from nature and the world to preserve balance. Every 666 years, creatures known as Unoathables enter our world, freezing time for the year. (Actually, that year is compressed into a second, so technically this is 2002 instead of 2000) Only people who have made Oaths can stay unfrozen to combat the menace of the Unoathables.
In Artenia, the world of Oathables, people come of age at eighteen, when they are told the secret words of the Oaths. An Oath is a magickal bond between at least two beings that enables them to be able to do amazing things. In the past of Artenia, there have been people who have befriended dragons with Oath and later been seen riding them, or tiger-Oaths make the person more nimble and the tiger more intelligent. Also, if an Oathfriend calls for you, no matter where you are, you can instantly go to them. Once you make an Oath, it can only be broken by Death (and there have been exceptions to that, read: ghosts), mutual agreement, or trechery.
Unoathables are feirce demons that last came in the year 1334 (This was the second Opening, the first was in 668, the opening also accounted for the start of the Black Death), and that prey on human souls, turning the bodies into Unoathables. As the name implies, they will never accept an Oath with anything, and eat a person's Oath-power, forcing them to either become an Unoathable, which can take a variety of forms but be sealed away for 666 years, or die.
The Five Families, named after the anceint words for Wood, (gu-shin) Fire, (sar-blan) Earth, (meshi-nija) Metal, (Chir-nal) and Water (Flo-sil), are all Guilds of Oathmasters who specialize in the qualities of that element: Plants, Dragons and Demons, mammals, machines, and sea life. Each specialist has particular powers, listed below. You can join up to two families.
If you choose Wood, you will have fast healing and regeneration. If you choose Fire, you have reselience to heat and can breathe fire. If you choose Earth, you will be stronger than normal and have thick skin. If Metal is your choice, then you will be able to transform your arm into anything made of metal. If Water is your path, then you can breathe underwater and be resistant to pain.
Name: Do I have to explain it?
Age: I would prefer it to be older than 18, but not TOO old. We can't have any Oathmasters at age 73 banging on an Unoathable with a cane, can we? :-)
Gender: Hopefully you all know what a gender is.
Families: Please don't all fill the same Families, if you have your first post before joining a Family you can leave this blank until you join one.
Description: Come on! You don't know what a description is?
Name: Slannon Nhiirian (Nee-ree-ahn)
Gender: What's that? Just kidding, Male
Description: This shy kid secretly learned the first words of the Oath, and thus was trained earlier than usual, devoting much of his time to honing his physical and mental prowess. He usually wears a tank top and shorts, and carries around a small book that he uses to record the names of his Oath-friends. He also believes that his purpose in life is to find the words of the World Oath, the original Oath that started them all and created Unoathables, to renew its power before the Unoathables' year is over.
I think I would like this, if you would have me.
Name: Fenton Creed
Description: Fenton is massive. Even for a metal family devotee. He is roughly 6'6" and weighs almost 300 pounds. Fenton relies heavilly on his physical stregnth, but is good hearted deep down. His boom voice and size often make people immediately see him as the agressor, which he dispises. But when Fenton -is- the agressor, all in his way had better take cover.

Name: Sarth O'Syron
Families: Water and Wood
Description: A quiet and lonely man that travels alone. He bonded with a strong and noble wolf. In a fight the Wolf gave his life to protect Sarth. This has made Sarth a very quiet and person that shuns communication. He now travels alone, avoiding people wherever he goes.
He wears a lightweight blue and green tunic with matching leggings. He has emerald green eyes and light blonde hair that is cut short. At his side are two Gladius short swords with matching hilts. In his hand is an Oak staff.

Awesome! Feel free to make your first posts, guys!

Name: Zastia Crashtil
Description: Zastia is a very pessimistic girl. She isn't overly enthusiastic, but has a very sweet personality if she trusts someone. She isn't fond of others, even less fond of other females. Her negativity has made her a sarcastic and cynical girl. She is truly fascinated by Unoathables, and wishes she could study them without being devoured. She is very rarely seen wearing anything but black and red clothing, which contrasts drastically with her extremely fair skin. She is very precise in whatever she decides she wants to do and is often referred to as stubborn. The only emotion that she is capable of handling easily is anger, anything else makes her feel awkward and disoriented. She has very blonde hair and gray eyes.
Tell me if I should change anything!
I'll probably be in on this, just want to think of a character.
Prolly wood and water.
Just want to check- I think I asked in the interest thread but didn't get an answer- for the particular families are there particular beings that oaths need to be made with i.e. people with wood family allegiances have oaths made with plants?
Or is that more concerned with the traits of the magick?
07/21/2007 4:35 PM
Prolly wood and water.
NO NO, YOU CANT, THATS MY TWO FAMILIES, I ALREADY MADE A CHARACTER, I CALLED IT MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
Actually, if you'll read the interest thread, I posted that I would more than likely pick those two in the first post I made there, before you had put up your character sheet.
Not my fault you're a copy cat :P
07/21/2007 4:42 PM
Ah, but it doesn't matter, you never made a character so you never officially claimed it yet. :P Oh well, I hope we can share (Hope)
07/23/2007 2:47 PM
Answer time! yes you can share, it just makes it seem strange. Although the odds of two people choosing the same two families are 1:40 I think. When you join a family, part of the Oath is that all of the designated creatures will welcome you as an equal. Also, your chara is all set.
Answer time didn't answer my questions, lol-
for the particular families are there particular beings that oaths need to be made with i.e. people with wood family allegiances have oaths made with plants?
Or is that more concerned with the traits of the magick?
07/24/2007 5:56 PM
sorry, its mostly about the traits
So to make absolutely sure I have it straight- the family choices I make have no impact at all on the type of organism I could make an oath with?
So just because I pick water it doesn't have to be with a jelly fish or something? It's more like healing and life are associated with water, so that family is good at healing magick (as well as underwater breathing, lol)?
07/25/2007 1:55 PM
yes. When they join the family, the oath gives them those powers, but you can Oath any creature except Unoathables
One more question, lol (questions show enthusiasm ;))- whatever they bond with, that animal doesn't have to go around with them, do they? Like, it's more of a spiritual/magick awakening thing than having to be stuck to each other?
Families: Wood and Earth
Description: Rus is a large, formidable man. His low dominant forehead, sloping eyebrow (yes, that was singular for a reason, take note), and often vacant expression make him seem unintelligent - which he is. His motto, if he knew what that was, would be "Smash."
He works as a physical laborer, and is quite good at it, so long as you tell him what you want done. He also works as a bodyguard, when there is a need, and is quite good at that as well. His imposing physique and demeanor make him good at any physical work, so long as it doesn't require a lot of brain power.
His Oathfriend is a gorilla, which is often jibed as quite appropriate. Other, harsher people claim the gorilla is smarter than he is. This too, may be seen as appropriate.
How's that? If it needs anything, let me know.
sloping eyebrow (yes, that was singular for a reason, take note)
That made me laugh far more than it really warranted, lol. Hooray for codeine!
Name: Zita Fusco
Families: wood and water, wood being a relatively new area of practice, in the hope that it will help alleviate her pain
Description: Zita seems more diminutive than even her modest 5'5 would suggest, appearing slight to the point of frailty. Her complexion is clear and olive-toned, her eyes a dark mahogany brown, her features plain and often tired and pinched looking. Only two things about her physically are really noteworthy: her lips, plump and sensuous- and out of place for it- and her hair, a deep and rich black that falls in soft natural curls- but this, more often than not, she wears tied up, as if to hide it.
She was involved in a motor accident about 3 years ago, and since then has suffered from periodic and crippling bouts of back pain and migraines. Coping with this not only often necessitates the use of strong analgesics but also means it has been very difficult to maintain full-time work. She currently works part-time in a local library, and proof-reads for a small publishing company from her home. It also meant a life style change: before, Zita was quite active, very into outdoor activities- camping, hiking, wilderness exploration etc. Now she rarely leaves her apartment socially, although practicing healing magick does seem to be having some positive effects.
She is quiet, reasonably intelligent, and often bitter.
Her Oathfriend is a pine marten.
Let me know if that's okay, or anything needs to be changed.

She was involved in a motor accident about 10 years ago, and since then has suffered from periodic and crippling bouts of back pain and migraines.
Families: wood and water
If you choose Wood, you will have fast healing and regeneration.
Is it just me, or is anything in the above contradictory?
07/26/2007 11:26 AM
She's not the only one on strong painkillers :P
I totally forgot about the regeneration, even though that was my reason for choosing it in the first place. My poor brain.
Okay- water family is a recent thing, and far from perfected, motivation rather obvious.
I'll change it when I'm less wooly.
Edited character sheet to incorporate wood family effects, also shortened time since accident.
