Al right the threads are set and we are Live (so to speak). Ok Max if you're not up to it tell me now because this is the only chance where I might be able to replace you (temporarily) as a judge. You basically control our creativity here =)

Also since this is the first one we're trying lets only do only a few posts (10-15 I think Is good)

When you Finish posting add one more post with the words END OF THREAD

I'll try not to post without you having posted something as well

If your schedule gets mixed up and this drags on for more than (or close to) 2 weeks we'll cut it there and let max grade us on what we where able to do

This is NOT an open thread, please do not post here or ask to join here, as this is the test of an Idea in the making

If you would like to know more please

go here

When the thread is done it will be made clear and this (along with a similar post) will be open to comments and questions when they are both finished

Alright, here is the idea that I have.

It's a real-time, real-world RP. I want you to make a character that is just a normal person...any kind of person you could find. They can be rich, poor, young, old...anything.

There is only one change to the state of the world as we know it: the richest man in the world is John Barne, and he has just died. He had no family, no friends, no one to give his estate and money to. In his video-will, however, he said this:

"I want all of my belongings to be given away at random. Everything I own, in one large sum...all of my estates, the entirety of all of my bank accounts, each and every one of my belongings, to be given to one random person in the United States. I have set up a program on my computer, the password to get to the program is 'Raffle.' When you run it, it will give you a random 9 digit number. That is the Social Security Number of the person who will receive my inheritance."

It was all over the news, and Governor Shwarzeneggor (John Barne lived in California, so the government of course tried to play off of the fame of the story) announced that they would run the program on National Television on June 4th.

It is set pretty much real time, so that each day that passes in real life is a day that passes in the RP. If you don't get a chance to make a post that you wanted to on the appropriate day (say you got overscheduled) just make a note in the beginning of the post that it was supposed to be dated for the previous day.

I set it up so that we can start tomorrow, you can have a post to get your character introduced and introduce the story into your plotline however you would like, and then the next day (both literally and in the game) you would find out that you won the inheritance.

You would then have to go through the next five days of doing what you wanted with the wealth, dealing with the paparazzi, the fame, the sudden exposure (or maybe not, if you are already a famous person...if you would like, you can have your character be someone rich and famous already, and it'll just be an addition to your wealth. You would have to figure out a way to make it interesting, though).

Oh yeah...figure the money that you got is roughly 5 billion just in gold bars, cash, bank accounts, and other actual monetary units. In estates' and items' worth, tack on another 3 billion (the approximate amount of all of the things you now own is worth...including paintings, houses, mansions, boats, expensive jewelry...whatever. It's a lot)

Now this may seem silly, but it'll be easy to fluff it off, so I want you to keep it interesting: that's the hard part.

Also, I suppose if you two wanted something more fantasy/science fiction, I can come up with something different. Let me know if this is good, or if you need any other information.

5 BILLION DOLLU!

I'm rich biatch!

lol. Sorry had to do it

The Idea, I like very much actually, I might have heard something similar a while back, but never for so much money

Also, I am kinda busy today so you can expect 2 posts from me around midnight (I think it'll show up as 9pm on my posts) so that I can do the Intro and Day 1 of the inheritance at the same time.

Thanks!

I actually had some really specific things, but I wanted to leave it up to you, because that's what this is about. I think afterwards I'll let you all know what I had originally thought of. Not now, though, because I don't want to influence you.

Uh, hate to say this fellow but you should post this in the RPGC Battlefield. That's where stuff like this is supposed to go, since it's not a big multiplayer roleplaying game with a storyline, it's more of a brawl between one or two roleplayers.

nanuk
06/02/2007 5:58 PM

This is different Rath- there's a couple of posts about it in the Community section.

It's not a fighting challenge, it's a writing one (haw haw)- really interesting idea Recko had that he wants to expand into teams.

Have a look at the thread (one in Welcome wagon- his intro thread- and one in the Suggestion Forums), because if this trial run with Pillage goes well it'll hopefully develop into a regular thing.

It doesn't have to be real time in hours, but it'd be interesting to see all the posts on Monday in RL relate to Monday in the RP...all the posts on Tuesday in RL relate to Tuesday in the RP...

Make sense?

Also whats the limit on the size of our posts?

No limit, so long as it's organized.

Should I tell you guys about what I'm looking for, or...?

I dunno...do you need anything else from me? If not, I'll need a reply from both you Recko and Pillage, and then we'll start.

Since the raffle is being held on Monday (so to speak) I actually wanted to start posting 2 days in advance to set my base for this.

I'm still going to post it. I just wanted to give heads up as to why there will be at least 1 post before tomorrow morning.

No limit, so long as it's organized.

I think you've just made this a little bit harder for yourself.

The Eastern Front

Monday June 4, 1120 Hours AEST

I'm writing this from Safe Mode. Around me is nought but despair and death. I don't know which is more rancid to me, these good cheerful men slowly rotting in thier bloody filth or seeing the same drained look in each sad-eyed man that passes me, every one reminding me that we are losing. We've hit them with everything. Everything. Our strongest weapons are cut off; each attempt to retake them devastates us and what we have left. We try to update the drivers. Blue-screen. A mere spyware scan. Blue-screen. Even Windows Media Player. What do they want with that?! Taking our basic luxuries gives them a superb morale advantage, but forcing us to use RealPlayer? That is torture. Knowing this happens after the Geneva Convention sickens me.
You may've heard by now, yesterday they took the basic accounts. Administrator is theirs. Even my personal sign-in (password-protected) is gone. All we had was Safe Mode.
But last night the men celebrated. To see these miserable, helpless louts and remember how they danced and laughed hours ago is hysterical, in its morbid way. See, we found a single weapon to reverse everything. The war would be ours - history's greatest twist of advantage.
We obtained the System Restore.
This is why I write to you. I am obligated to report its progress. No wonder, then, this is confidential. All our men would slit their throats, as of old, should they know this.
The System Restore would set this conflict back to before the main accounts were theirs. We could foresee their plans, stop and even reverse them. If our current knowledge were applied a week ago alone, all would be ours. We readied and used it as first opportunity. Complete success. The system was set back, and the main sign-in was ours again. That instant we sprang to work. Our efforts stretched to all of the reconquered land. Then, our Firefox efforts reported (with terrible reluctance) that checking the history yielded no result. This sort of activity has only yielded one result, in our experience.
Sir, it is my sad duty to report that a few hours ago, our main force was delivered a crushing blue-screen, and the user accounts are lost again.
If you wish to access our force (keep this to yourself at all costs), give our startup crew the password 'F8'. I write from 'Safe Mode with networking', our one link to the outside world. Except this little wire, we are trapped. God help us.

... And that's why I might be slow replying. Also, in our fine game, I'm the guy who writes this.

Holy Constipated Buddha!

I'm not sure what the hell you just wrote, but apparently we have some major trouble (I think).

And as long as you make sure you indicate when the posts where supposed to be everything will be fine (I hope)

Hehe. I think I'm almost half a day ahead of you - I'm not sure on Canadian time, but right now it's 1:35 pm Monday. Compare that, the time it says this was posted and the time over there, and if you're not insanely terrible at maths like myself, we can figure out where everyone is.

Damn, I keep coming in, see the scroll bar's a tiny slit and go 'Jesus tapdancing Christ this thing's coming along', then remember that only about 8 lines fit in the screen. I should reformat. Soon.

I'm actually considering using the OOC section in the story, so I'll be in here socialising a lot.

For the receiver's eyes

STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

If you are reading this, Safe Mode has been breached. They've done the impossible, smashed our unbreakable stronghold, blue-screened that which does not blue-screen. They also said the Titanic was unsinkable. Ruthless bastards.
I am probably dead by now, and if I'm not, may it come swift before they can force anything from my broken tongue. This is an official beacon, I know. To use it otherwise is punishable, yes. But that no longer matters, and I need somewhere to record my final thoughts. They say [a bloodstain obscures the next few lines]. Nothing matters now, except death and land. These petrified boys around me are just final obstructions to the Virus. To consider them any more human rips at me, and nobody here deserves another source of pain. The rumbles and erratic behaviour are closer every minute. They know what's coming - though none speak, the air among us is clammy, freezing and traumatised. It's funny. You read about final stands, how a surrounded force pushes to the last man, together in life and soon death against everything. The determination and brotherhood that blinds the doomed to everything but tearing down as many foes as possible with them. Even that's abandoned us.
May you, the reader, find a less painful demise than us, the forgotten. May you never bow to them, even if death relieves you. Refusal is our last weapon now, more loyal than hope or strength or the very bullets we'll soon give them. Find solace while you have the chance.
The war is lost.

See what I'm getting at here? There'll probably be a couple other bits of my life worked into the story too, if they have any impact on writing it.

Pillage
06/04/2007 7:21 AM

From here on I won't mention whether I'm posting OOC authentically or in-character, except if it's something important. But generally, you'll be able to tell if you have to. Also, I'm right to post on time. So, it's awwwwn!

Its 11:50 pm right now on Sunday

Ah, that'd put us about 13 hours apart. It's going on midnight here, so there it'd be 11am. If I've got that right, heh. In one minute it'll be Tuesday here and Monday where you are.

I think you've just made this a little bit harder for yourself.

Eh, it could be a lot of fun for us, content-wise. Very flexible. You've done at least 1,000 words there for the intro, probably a fair bit more. Mine'll probably be closer to 400 :p

I'm thinking Recko, what if only you get the money, which itself drives my character's pursuit in his story? I can set it up so the two stories only influence each other as much as you choose, but mine'll be influenced by your main character's actions. If you don't mind. To keep things clean I'll go by your time, so it's 11 Monday morning in my character's world.

Only for a few more years..

Maybe all this time we've attributed maturity to the wrong place, and wisdom teeth are erroneously named. I propose we start using the term 'wisdom pubes'.

WTF? A writing challenge? That sounds...not violent...and impossible. But I'm thirteen. Everything's impossible.

Wait until you get past the Teenage Angst stage. If you can time it right with the period where everyone turns 18, all you have to worry about is getting arrested. And waking up the next morning, looking beside you and reaching for the phone-book to find someone who can test you for every STI spread in the last decade.

How do you guys think it's looking so far?

nanuk
06/04/2007 7:28 AM

How do you guys think it's looking so far?

Confusingly, lol.

I thought you were basically supposed to write different versions of the same scenario- in this case, inheriting John Barnes' money.

Did I pick that up wrong?

Not that your posts aren't really interesting, Pillage, I just want to get straightened out on what's happening.

Pillage
06/04/2007 7:48 AM

That was the idea - two alternate realities, but I like twisting the hell out of a concept :p

I figure it'll be a lot more interesting if it's about my main character's reaction to this particular guy (Recko's main character) getting the money, than if it's just 'kay, billions of dollars, I'm loaded now'. At the moment I'm thinking they won't actually be an influence on each other at all (I have ways of making everything work in the written word), but if he and Max give me the all-clear to do it that way and actually affect the other story like an RP, I'll try that out while we're testing everything.

nanuk
06/04/2007 8:18 AM

Like I said it's interesting, but from Max's viewpoint will it not make judging a little difficult?

Not that it couldn't be done, but..

Pillage I like this idea you've posted and I originally expected the teams to function much like this

from Max's viewpoint will it not make judging a little difficult?

This Is why there needs to be more than 1 judge, But as Max is our judge right now I will leave it as his discretion whether this is allowed or not.

[url:http://www.rpgconsortium.com/rpgforums/discussions.cfm?forumid=4&topicid=283264] This is where you should be posting your "scenario development"

BUT WAIT

Let's wait for Max to make his decision on this because if he says yes then we can post the entire story development there and use this thread for comments and questions.

Don't be frustrated, remember this is only a test

P.S. Pillage I still don't know what the hell you're writing about, but I like it (I think)

Max
06/04/2007 10:36 AM

hrm...I see where Pillage is going with this, but like Nanuk said it isn't quite what I had in mind...

Cool. In that case, I'll gather whoever wants to be part of the story and I'll interact with them there. Basically, two main reasons I want to incorporate things that are actually happening into the story is for an unpredictable real-life feel, and for a constant flow of ideas. I have an eccentric way of going about these things, hehe.

Don't be frustrated, remember this is only a test

Bah, nothing frustrates me. I dare you to try :D

P.S. Pillage I still don't know what the hell you're writing about, but I like it (I think)

You'll know eventually ;) It's part of the real-life-events part. I need somewhere to record it where I can get others' reactions.

Edit: I may be busy today, so I'll shelf the interaction idea for now and get that first post up. *re-plans*
This is going to be ridiculously fun. I may even publish this somewhere eventually, if I get around to fiddling with the copyrightable stuff.

Max
06/04/2007 8:37 PM

Ok...here's the thing.

Pillage, what I see you doing is very interesting. The problem is that I don't see how I would be able to judge you both on itve a separate thread, then I can look at the piece as a whole rather than having to split it up, which makes much more sense to me. In order for me to judge the creativity and the clarity and all that, I have to look at it as a whole, not just bits and pieces.

Also, once we actually start, there should be two threads: one with your story, Pillage, and one with Recko's. Once we have started, neither of you should look at the other's thread. I would like to enforce this, but don't see a way to do so. The reason I would like to enforce this is so that all of the ideas that you get for the thread are original, and are in no way influenced by each other. I can't enforce it, though, so I'll just have to trust you guys.

All that being said, if you were to have some other person get the money in your thread, that would be perfectly fine. I will allow that much tweaking of the concept. You do have to have constant conflict/contact with the person who got the money or some other aspect of the event, though.

You and Recko should have no interaction, however.

Also, as of right now it is just Pillage vs Recko so there should be no outside influence.

Did that clear everything up?

Pillage
06/05/2007 12:25 AM

Oh! Now I understand. I assumed the 'No Subject' one was just a double-post. So I put all my stuff in a different thread, as a separate entry. Uh, we can get a mod to move my first post, or just delete it if I re-post it :p

Does this mean that I should repost my story in a new thread?

Since we seem to have a problem with time, let's not consider the "gaps" between posts

Anyways tell me whether I should start in a new thread (or start one yourself for me)

I'll resist my urge to see Pillages story. Just make sure you tell me when he finishes (so to speak) and I'll do the same in my thread
