I seem to have a hard-on for survival fiction.
Zombies have always been a terrifying premise in my mind: a virtually unstoppable creature hell-bent on devouring your flesh. Horror stories of this sort thus have a special place in my heart. As with any of my threads, I prefer down-to-earth characters with a strong sense of mortality about them as opposed to gung-ho unstoppable heroes. Strong characters are fine; savvy characters are better. Average people with lives we can relate to make the best characters in these stories, so be sure to pick a concept that fits.
Think about this thread as a social experiment, not a House of the Dead-style shoot 'em up. I don't want any Special Forces units para-jumping in, or SWAT team members carving a swath of destruction through the droves of undead. At most I'd like one cop/off duty soldier. This is a horror story, not an action adventure.
Name: Eddie Collins
Eye color: Blue
Hair color: Blond
General appearance: Eddie's appearance betrays a man of considerable activity, though not of the typical gym-going variety. His muscles are well defined, but more pronounced in areas that are subject to frequent use (such as his arms). At first glance, one might make the assumption that he is a carpenter, lumberjack, or tradesman of another equally physical profession. His numerous tattoos give the appearance of a man who has been on the other side of the law more than once. His eyes are a unique shade of dark blue, which almost appear brown in photographs due to their lack of brightness. His hair is close-cropped, spiked or swept to one side, and his beard is light and often stubbly. He has a cocky appearance and general cadence, which often sends others the signal that he's brash and arrogant (but never fails to give the impression that he is a leader among men). Most would consider him handsome, although he has a few quirky facial features (such as a crooked smile, high brow, and a faint scar across his right eyebrow) which make him stand out in a crowd.
Profession: Store clerk
Despite his chosen career as a scientist, Eddie is a real meat and potatoes kind of guy; he rides a motorcycle, goes to boxing gyms and shooting ranges, and enters the occasional drinking contest. Conversely, he was a high honors graduate at the University of Chicago after receiving a full scholarship for his essay, "Joe Baxter is Dead" (ironically, a report on a book that was never written). One is likely to see Eddie wearing a motorcycle jacket and a lab coat in the same day, making him an interesting dichotomy of brains and brawn.
He arrived in Millsborough while touring the country on his motorcycle, but made the mistake of taking a strange girl he met at a bar into his hotel room. She promptly looted him while he was in the bathroom, leaving him with no money, no identification, and no means of getting home with the amount of gas left in his bike. He went to the police, but they offered little help, saying that if they didn't find the thief, they would have to throw him in jail for vagrancy (having no home, no employment, and less than ten dollars cash on hand). With an amused smirk, the chief of police offered him the alternative of living in an open jail cell while working at a shopping mart in town. At minimum wage, the job was a slow means of going home, but it was better than the alternative. Now, as a disgruntled stock boy, Eddie finds himself caught in a situation far worse than petty theft: he's trapped in a battle for his very survival.
Zombies? Oh hell yeah. Count me in.
Name: Skylar Biafra
Eye color: Brown
Hair: Red/Blue Mohawk
General appearance: Skylar is a kid in his late teens, but his slim face and constant scowl make him seem 4 or 5 years older. He can often be seen joking or laughing with his friends, but around people outside his social click he comes off as just another street punk. His hair is a mixture of red and blue dyes, mixing together, he keeps his mohawk up in 5 tall spikes. The stares he gets from people feed his pretty constant need for negative attention, and, being as militant as he is, he just stares right back. Skylar has a cornicopia of ear rings and a pair of eyebrow rings. He has only 1 tattoo, on his back, of a shackled man. It reads "There is no hope, for a man in chains" he wears old punk band T-shirts, covered in holes, often lacking sleeves. More often than not, hes driving around in his car, an old Mercury Cougar, which would be really mean, if it weren't for the rust, and constant backfiring of its decrepit motor.
Profession: High School Dropout
Skylars mom and dad were only 15 when he was born, he was put up for adoption at the age of 4, and never truely knew his real parents. He came to Millsborough when he was 17 into his 6th foster home. So damaged by his social toss-around, the foster parents, who originally were optimistic, threw him out of the house at age 18. Since then Skylar has been working at a local pool hall, wiping tables and smoking ciggarettes. He lives on the outskirts of town in the basement of a 2 family home, with his cat.
Skylar may seem like he cares about nothing, he is however a truely motivated liberal, often to the point of vandalism.

Very nice, Crix. This should make for an interesting mix already. I'm curious about how zombies respond to shiny, dangly things being flashed on a human body. :D
Or a steel-toed boot to the head, for that matter...
Name: Jodie Caffrey
Weight: No idea, don't do pounds- a little cuddly but her height allows her to wear it well
Eye color: hazel
Hair color: brown, short and choppy
Build: as above. Not quite stocky but far from being delicate- 'big boned'. Reasonable strength because of the job, used to being physical.
General appearance: Affable, homey, her face if at all pretty made so more by her expressiveness and intelligence rather than individual features, tanned from a life spent mostly outdoors: appearance usually reflecting her pragmatism- hair short for convenience, clothes hardy and eminently practical. Rarely wears jewellery or make up.
Profession: Animal control, studying in her own time to be a vet.
Background: From farming stock, cows mostly, a few horses. Grew up outdoors, raised by her widower father. Enjoyed being around the animals, watching their behaviour, as well as the actual day-to-day farming work. Always intended on being a veterinarian, found the inner workings of animals just as interesting as the outer, but got pregnant in high school and put off going to college. Lost her little girl (Jennifer) to a drunk driver 3 years previous to this, her father a year later, both of which spurred her to go back to studying. Never married- Jen's father was a drunken experiment in a hay rick, he signed up straight after high school and left Millsborough.
Let me know if that's okay.
Hooray! This thing is spreading like a zombie virus!
I can't wait to get it started.

Yea count me in too. Just tell me when I can jump in this sucker.
Name: Louis Materazzi
Eye color: Brown
Hair color: Black
General appearance: Louis is a typical Italian. He has the token jet black hair, tan skin color, and purely white smile. He has toned muscle definition, and a broad chest. He does not have a large wingspan and his forearms are built tough. Underneath this stocky figure is a typical guy, and a lazy bum. He may appear like another dumb whop, but he is actually quite intelligent.
Louis was brought up on the hard streets of Calabria's. His father owned an Italian grocer, and his mother was a cleaning maid. They were poor, and his life was beginning to shatter. Eventually his father had it with the Italian society, and he packed up his family and they moved to the United States. There, Louis was raised on Taylor Street in Chicago. His father owned a restaurant, and his family seemed to be on track. Louis was known throughout Taylor Street for his hot temper. He and the other kids would always get in a fight. One day Louis formed an Italian gang, which got him in trouble with authority. After it took quite some time for him to get his life back, Louis started focusing on school and pursed a career in Photography. Eventually Louis became the head Photographer for the Millsborough Daily. Today he is making good money, and is getting the respect he deserves.
