This is just a sort of generic gathering place for you to pratice any old character you please. Work on post length, grammer, tense, description, whatever. Flesh out a new character's personality or brush the dust off an old friend. Just be nice (mostly) and have fun.

This thread will be mainly for HELPFUL commentary and critique. You know, constructive criticism. Feel free to ask an opinion, or offer one in a plesant fashon. No flaming, especially, because this is supposed to be for helping.

You don't need a character sheet, but you're welcome to post one if you feel the need.

All staff are NPC's -- non player characters, meaning feel free to control them to bring you a drink -- although they don't mind someone helping out, as they are a bit understaffed.

Hey there Wasuup. Welcome to free form role play.

If you didn't know, Setsuai Is my personal character, not one of the staff. One of the main points of free form RP like this is that you only control your own character, and comment on reactions of others. You don't write reactions for people. Also, you usually only note a change in time gradually, unless everyone involved agrees to jump ahead. Also, a word processor like microsoft word can be your best friend. It'll fix most straight up spelling problems, although homonyms give it trouble, and will pick out simple sentence structure problems. It won't always tell you how to fix it but *shrug* it's awfully useful.

02/06/2007 3:53 AM

ok, i got it, i have changed to make sense with what you put underneath.
thanks for telling me, i might not have thought much about personal charactors, oh yeah just to let you those two are my personal charactors but that was probably obvios anyway.

Just keep in mind that you can't seriously injure another person's character with out them consenting. With this type of role play set up you simply attempt to catch or attack someone, and they'll decide within the abilities of their character if you connect or not. Connecting automatically with personal characters is considered part of God-Moding, and that is really frowned upon.

wasuup

yes master, i understand, come on i know as much as that. i just forgot about the personal charactors and stuff. i won't do it again.

Hello, setsuai_kijo.

I am a little confused about the season. You mention a short winter and a chill in the air, but I'm confused if it is supposed to be Fall or Spring.

I think I'll just dive in first and you can tell me the season later.

Sorry I posted first without asking but I really liked it and started something like 10 minutes ago and just learnt how to ask for permission.

Also I want to ask you first If I can keep my post her and also to give an opportunity for creativity by allowing anyone to chooses how the father dies (he must die, for how I want m character to grow, but I guess it can change if you really want it to) I was thinking maybe death by fire ball, but I'm open to suggestions

CandlestickJay
05/22/2007 3:43 PM

death by fireball? That is extraordinarily unusual.

However, welcome to RPGC! I think it is fine that you keep your post, in fact, I wouldn't mind hanging out with you for a bit while you learned the ropes. It isn't too difficult, as long as you pay attention to your elders-mods. (Don't worry, I still have to do the same with mine.)

A couple of things about your first post though.

The first person is usually discouraged, except in special occasions like thoughts. When you are writing a thought, use italics instead of parenthesis. Just in case you don't know how to do that, it goes a little something like this.

To achieve this -

I don't know what to do! She's hopeless! Elizabeth thought vainly, struggling to keep her temper.

At the place you'd like to begin the italics, put

[ i ]

except without the spaces.

Then at the place where you'd like to stop the italics, put

[/ i ]

once again, without the spaces.

Just a couple of hints. But I'll post a response to you right away. ;-)

To make things a little less confusing, I took the liberty of creating a simple floor plan of the Horse and Carriage Inn.

At the moment, the entire Left Wing is out of commission due to fire damage, including parts of the kitchen.

I will put up another floor plan for the upstairs portion of the tavern, as well as one for the basement.

Most of the place is taken from its original description, however I have added a few things to make the place bigger and more friendly to lots of new visitors.

*cough*show off*cough*

Trying to impress your young padawan, eh? ;)

I'm just jealous, no idea how you people keep coming up with maps- I'm thrilled I've managed to figure out how to cut sections of .pdfs and stick them into word docs (state exams are online in pdf format, so if you want to have a sample question in a paper you're doing up you usually literally had to cut and paste and then photocopy), so I'll leave the map making to you young 'uns!

CandlestickJay
05/24/2007 5:53 PM

Dude, that map was definitely ALL MS Paint. The only reason it looks decent is because I was bored, trying to make things easy, AND I went through a "I want to be an architect" phase.

Recko_glyph
05/24/2007 7:47 PM

Hey Jay nice work on the map I know I keep saying I'm not gonna write, but I think I'm addicted already =)

On the note of me kind of being a ghost for the next few days here's basically how I see Quishtar. He'll stay to help "salvage" what he can with the Inn. I could even ask you about Henry (that's his name right?). As you know my character isn't all that great at thinking things through and feels somewhat intimidated by Murlocs character.

Why I have written that is because I am leaving it at your discretion to use Quishatr (If needed). You obviously know where this story is headed and I don't want me not being here to stop the advancement.

I get the feeling though that a bunch of characters are about to be introduced which I think is fine, but I'm not exactly thrilled with all the history that comes with new characters (Yeah, because I sure don't have lots of story with my character *looks left to right with shifty eyes*)

Also since nanuk has declared me your padawan I have but one question:

WHERES MY LIGHT SABER?!?

Honey, if I knew where this story was headed, it would be in the main forum, not in the training grounds. This is a day to day roleplay, available for people to come in and out as they wish for help and the rest. As far a s a plot goes, we have to fix the tavern. And then maybe we'll have a faire. Or something. I dunno. Or a concert. Who knows.

Not really any mroe people, unless other newbs decide to show besides our lovely Murloc. I just introduced her fiance because in my head I realized she had one. If that makes any sense. As for story, there is a chance that a thread may go up with some helpful tips about that. It does help to have a history for the character you are using. It can determine how they would react in certain situations, and really bring them to life.

I'm pretty much only here to practice my roleplaying and descriptive skills, as well as to flesh out a character for me to play later. Do you have any tips on that?

CandlestickJay
05/24/2007 10:25 PM

Its good to know she has a last name. :-)

As for fleshing out a character, here is a fun activity - go on myspace, find one of those random 100 question bulletins, and then answer it from the perspective of your character. It'll drive you crazy, but man, you will know everything about her.

If that wasn't what you were looking for, then just chill with us a for a while and we'll see where things go and we can all offer constructive criticism as we go along.

Really nice idea Jay.

I'll have to try it on those times when my brain isn't working and I'm agonising over a character.

I tend, most of the time, to start off with a rough idea, and find out more about the character as I post. With some threads the setting/premise can make it easier- e.g. the Age of Descent thread. With the time it was set it imposes certain restrictions on what you can do 'career-wise'.

'Big events' in a character's past can also be helpful- in the time period in the thread it would've been very likely that there would have been one if not multiple deaths in your family: that kind of thing is obviously going to have an affect on a person. Once you decide how your character would react to something like that it can set you on a particular path e.g. in the thread my character had lost a mother so had to take over the maternal role, and thus didn't really have time to dwell on the grief. She also ended up getting interested in medicine from nursing her mother through the illness.

Someone losing a child- for example Jay's character Eolande- would react completely differently. It devastated her. Her circumstances pre that- being abandoned by a cad (men!)- would also have shaped her reaction.

It's not always as clinical as saying 'if this happened what would I do'- depending on the character sometimes it's easier, it's not a conscious choice, you just know. With other characters it's harder work, but it's usually a matter of trying to think 'what would have happened in their life, positive or negative, that would have shaped them into the person they are now?'.

For an amazing example of a bio I would suggest reading Jay's in Age of Descent- we were all wowed by it :)
There are a couple of good ones there, actually.

There are also some good ones in the Tarris Hold thread (unfortunately it never really got active, but the bios were quite detailed).

Jay mailed me and suggested putting a thread here about writing bios- I think it would be a great idea if people were up for it.

edit: big events, not bog events.

nanuk
05/25/2007 5:52 AM

As Jay said already 'we' (her and Recko, lol, I just chime in with useless information) already hijacked this dead thread, and it's now for experimenting with characters, trying things out, getting the feel of new chars etc.

So I imagine randomly joining is just dandy.

CandlestickJay
05/25/2007 6:14 AM

Indeed, nanuk is absolutely right. Just make sure if you are going to speak, read the previous posts to find out where we are, right Murloc? ;-)

As for the bios thread, I suppose I shall start to get to work on it - even if just for those with questions...

nanuk
05/25/2007 8:42 AM

chacter i haven't tried before

*cough*Auron*cough :P

I don't know if it was coincidence but as soon as I read the bit about the coat- before even the sunglasses or scar, and brooding tightlippedness I thought Auron from Final Fantasy X.

And while I will be the first to argue that he is awesome (I had the hugest crush on him) it can be very stifling in RP to roleplay a pre-existing character, and not always that rewarding.

I'm going to try to jump into the thread while Jay's away, in case anybody wants a hand with anything, or wants to try something new.

Just have to relax from having a bunch of 11/12 year olds scream at me for an hour... (we were making 'lava lamps'- I thought they'd enjoy it but they went absolutely loopy! It's just cooking oil and food colouring, people!)

CandlestickJay

Ew 11-12? Preteens, not the best of ages.

Still haven't thought of a character- and was busy watching the Lost finale (I gasped)- but should get a chance earlyish tomorrow.

Just to clarify- from Lillian's enchanting I assume we're playing this as a D&D-style setting, but someone correct me if that's not the case.

for Julius- nice. One small tip- the spacing on the posts can come out different than it looks when you're actually writing it, so every so often to split up your paragraphs (particularly if it's a longish post) hit return an extra time.
Other than that, very nice post.

Murloc Hugger- I'm not sure exactly where you're going with these Inquisitors, lol, which is partly why I haven't jumped in yet, till I see what's needed. My one comment on the post is on the 'Yes, there were two of them" bit.
Throwing in 'yes' kind of.. lifts the veil, you know? It makes the reader more aware of the fact that they're reading a story, makes it more difficult to suspend disbelief and get immersed.

Sorry about that. Thanks for telling me.

No, lol- I should have made myself clearer.

I don't know, story-wise, where you're going with it- so is what happens going to necessitate we all flee the tavern, or just get on with things after he's sorted out, that kind of thing, and that's going to have an impact on what kind of character I play, that's all

I intend on using this villain at some point, so I needed an idea of how to use him. I'll just get rid of him after the encounter.

No, it's cool- the point of this thread is to try out new characters and ideas, so it's a good thing!
But as I hadn't created a character yet it's better for me (because that's just my style) to wait a little to let the dust settle before joining.

Nice posts people- and extra brownie points to Reko for the marathon one!
I also really liked the description of the old man, especially his hands.

Two points:
1. If you have more than one character speaking dialogue, try to split up the lines rather than putting each persons in the one paragraph. So, instead of;
"Oh my God!" Jane said, looking at Tom. "Where's the jam?". "What do you mean? I left it right there!". She could clearly see the smears around his mouth. "You are such a goddam tonze".

"Oh my God!" Jane said, looking at Tom. "Where's the jam?".

"What do you mean? I left it right there!".

She could clearly see the smears around his mouth.
"You are such a goddam tonze".

So nearly begin a new paragraph everytime the dialogue switches between people- it makes it much easier to read and can help punctuate the meaning.

2. What was 2?... Oh yes! Crack boom- if only we had audible sound effects! Alack, we don't, and writing them out can get a bit cartoony. I've seen quite a few people doing it lately, and it's unfortunate because it can really ruin a good dramatic moment.

nanuk
05/29/2007 1:17 AM

One small point to Mablung as well:

Nice post, but I found part of it a little difficult to understand because one of the sentences was very long, e.g.

He carefully wondered round the room, his presence seemed to fill the room now that he chose not to hide away but still the odd person looked at him querly he was huge and dressed as he was he gave a mystical look

Because it runs on I had to read it a couple of times.
As a very general rule commas should occur in pairs (I'm a comma fiend, I often have too many, as well as being overly fond of semi colons, lol), so the sentence could have read something like-

He carefully wandered round the room, his presence seemed to fill it now that he chose not to hide away, but still the odd person looked at him queerly: he was huge and, dressed as he was, he had a mystical look.

The extra punctuation just provides breaks, where the reader can pause and absorb what you're telling them, so it makes more of an impact, and the colon adds more impact.

Apart from that, though, nice- and who is this mysterious child? Hmm.. ;)

I also really liked the description of the old man

Well I don't plan to keep him (yes I know boo me), but I guess I can let him be a freebie to anyone.

Recko_glyph

I'll admit that my post is long and you may forget some parts between them so here's the explanation of the pendant

-It absorbs magic (as to how much I still don't know, but we can talk about that after)

If you recall as he passed by each character his pendant glowed a certain colour (not to be weird or a smart ass, but reading the posts you'll se different colours where emitted when passing by characters:
Blue-Lillian
Green-Juilius
Red- Mablungs character (I'm not sure you said his name yet))

And black when the Inquisitor and diviners had passed him

He had just finished cutting of the last few branches from the third tree when he suddenly heard horses approaching. He thought that it might have been another merchant on his way to make a delivery. He began to walk towards the original path, but felt suddenly paralysed.

He did not know what was causing his paralysis until he looked down and saw his pendant had turned black, slowly staining the fabric of his shirt. He heard the horses approaching and attempted to yell for hep, but could no longer speak. Then like a flash a man in armour along with several men in robes passed by swiftly carrying a flag that made Quishtars heart stop. It was the symbol of the inquisitor. He had heard bone chilling stories of what inquisitors where capable of and what had happened to those who opposed them.

I chose black because he went with mall intent towards the Inn thus giving off 'evil' (I don't like using that word its to overused to have any real meaning now a days) magical energy

And since Necromancy is 'evil' and there where bodies (I think. How I understand it they where basically just left there) I thought this would be my chance to kind of just make the significance of the pendant better known and maybe it would be our first "significant" plot

As for why it performed necromancy you'll have to read further down

The pendant can also be manipulated by its wearer, but as Quishtar is young and basically new to the concept of magic itself (this is a key element because it will keep him on a level equal, if not lower than your characters) he can't use it to its full potential.

The dreams

I'll explain from where the dreams come from the best way I can:

The pendant absorbs magic primarily (its real purpose), but uses its wearer as an energy source absorbing them slowly.

So to see this aspect you can look to the dreams as examples

There was a small flash and suddenly he felt like he was floating on water. He opened his eyes and saw nothing but darkness

He let himself float there for a while not moving, not saying a word. He thought about the events of the day reflecting on the actions he had taken.

As he thought of this he realized that he was beginning to sink.

This is from when he finds his father dead and:

He tried to wiggle free of the strange enchantment now upon him, cursing and yelling as loud as he could, but the more he resisted the stronger the enchantment seemed to become.

From just now.

Quishtar is a weak character and as the pendant is trying to absorb him quickly be cause of this. Its best opportunities are when he's being knocked out (as it seems to happen so often).

The White world so to speak was an attempt to cut him off from the real world (a coma of sorts if you will) and sinking into water was its attempt at completely killing him (since he had a head injury as well).

The blue hand

Some of you are probably very confused about this and how it ties to anything in the story. Well here it is:

-Imagine a bubble as the form of this White world and in order for anything to enter it, the bubble has to be broken

Lillian's 'spell' had to break through the bubble to reach Quishtar and "revive" him hence the blue hand is a symbol of the spell.

The darkness that enters can be described as Quishtar re-entering the world (escaping from the White world ) and the small ball of light the pendants attempt at stopping Quishtars escape by releasing magic to stop whatever is saving Quishtar (in this case using the "evil it absorbed from the inquisitor and Diviners to create zombies from the bodies to kill the caster)

This is also why one zombie is alive when he wakes up because (and well I probably should have posted this in the story) the ball entered him turning him into a zombie.

You'll have to probably look back and forth through the posts to completely understand what I'm saying completely.

LETS REVIEW

Here it is story wise in point form

-Quishtars father dies

-Quishtar gets knocked out and goes into the dark water , but is saved by the memories of his father from when he first gave him the pendant

-Quishtar wakes up and passes by all your characters absorbing a little bit (or at least recognizing) their magic

-In the forest he absorbs the "evil" magic from the Inquisitor and diviners (because they had a lot of magical energy and the pendant managed to steal some from them)

-Returning to the Inn/Tavern Quishtar is knocked out and falls near the bodies of the dead diviners

-The pendant tries to put Quishtar in a coma by separating his mind from his body putting his mind in the "white world" so he can't return escape

- Lillian's spell cast to revive him must bring his mind back from where the pendant has sent it so it can rejoin its body and make Quishtar wake up

-In a desperate attempt top stop Lillian the pendant releases the magic it absorbed from the inquisitor/diviners in the form of necromancy (in the hopes that the zombies will top her spell), but the pendant is unable to stop her, releasing all its stored magic and creating a 6 zombie army

The pendant

-Artifact that absorbs magic that can be use later

-Gains energy from its wearer

-Because Quishtar is weak the pendant is trying to absorb him quickly, but has failed twice
*****************************

If you guys don't like this idea tell me and I'll scrap it or change it (whatever you decide)

The only real question left is why His father wasn't absorbed by it and why its reacting to Quishtar so much and I'd prefer to answer them through the story instead of here, but I will If it can let us introduce new characters or things like that.

P.S. nanuk I think your chance to jump in is coming soon, but I'll try and make an opening for you If need be.

Ok, now that you've explained the whole "pendant" thing to me, I think I get it. Just one thing:

How does your character not even know what magic is? I mean, in a world where magic is so important, how can anyone not know about it? You'd have to be living in a cave or something to not know about it, and even then, you'd still probably know about it. And on a related note, how does he not know what a zombie or a necromancer is?

who is the 'boy' in the last post

Read the RP section. The "boy" is Recko's character, Quishtar.

That's not what I meant. If you're not going to post a full bio, don't post any at all. Here's a little "guideline" for what most people want in a bio:

Name
Sex
Race(Human, Elf, Dwarf, etc.)
Class/Character Archetype
Appearance
Equipment
Personality
History

If you know all of that about your character, you'll do fine.

And by the way, the original thread master never specified the setting, so we're assuming that this is D&D.

Mejuro
05/31/2007 9:30 PM

sorry for my misunderstanding....I can handle D&D

Recko_glyph

Ok welcome Mejuro Rala, I just think you'll have to wait little before you post (like till we kill zombies. shouldn't take too long) or just burst in I guess, your choice. If you wanna jump in as a character we have, I made and old black smith character you could take, but be the mage he sounds comedic.

As for a bio I should probably do one for Quishtar shouldn't I...............

*Evil glares received from all around*

NOW YOU KNOW THE TRUTH HE HAS LIVED UNDER A ROCK AND HE'S JUST COME OUT.

lol =)

He was raised in a village that banned magic (there's a back story I'll make if we ever go to that village). Its a small village and even though his father was a merchant and saw magic he wasn't allowed to talk about it and wanted to show it to Quishtar on their first trip together (this trip)

Zombies, necromancy- same reason if not more so for this reason than anything

Bwahahah!

I also give chinese burns to those who don't use capitals, hint hint Mejuro :P

Welcome, by the by- give the RP no-nos thread in the RP talk forum a read, if you would be so kind- it'll give you an idea of the kind of things you'll get shouted at for here.

Don't think we mentioned ellipses ("...") in it but overuse of those is frowned upon also ;)

Nearly had a heart attack when I logged on- 39 posts in the training section!
And I have to go to the dentist so I can't even read them all..

Mejuro
06/01/2007 5:35 AM

ok...Don't you use ellipses to signify that your talking tho? Thats what I mostly use it for.....and no Im not trying to kill you....:P

nanuk
06/01/2007 10:11 AM

No- I don't use ellipses to signify that I'm talking.

I use them in dialogue, if anything, to indicate a pause/trail on from the speaker.

Okay, just back from dentist and had a quick scan of the posts (will read them properly later). Two things;

Mejuro- it's not usual in RPing to use the present/continuous tense ("Nanuk reads the thread and then goes to the OOC section and posts her comments). It can get very clunky and unwieldy and can be quite distracting to read.
Usually, as in books, one of the past tenses works best ("Nanuk read the thread and then went to the OOc section to post/and posted her comments").

I know it's a training thread but there seems to be an awful lot of 'hey's and 'cool's and 'hell's and 'uh's sprinkled in the dialogue, which kind of spoils the mood and makes suspending disbelief difficult- as I said, fine here, but keep it in mind if you're posting in an actual D&D thread the dialogue should be more in period.

FIGHT THE POWER!!!

Anyway, what does everyone think of the descriptions of my character's spells? (i.e. chanting in an unearthly voice for summon spells, the glowing hand thing for healing spells, etc.)

[Edited by Murloc_Hugger on Saturday, June 2, 2007 6:59 PM]

CandlestickJay
06/02/2007 8:38 PM

You all make me want to kill myself.

Or cry.

Thanks nanuk, especially for the Jay-hat. That made me laugh.

I haven't seen too much that would result in beatings, and what I have seen nanuk has covered quite proficiently.

Here is one thing that I would like to remind everyone of though -

Remember where you are and what is going on around you.

You are in an inn. There is a map posted. I did it myself. Find it. Look at it. Remember it. When someone blows up a wall, keep it in mind. If your character was truly in this situation, he/she would not simply ignore something that just happened, especially if it was a big feat of magic, as ya'll have become very...prone? to doing.

Murloc - Nice, to begin with. Be careful with repeating the same metaphor in the exact same way. I understand how a certain spell does the exact same thing twice, but it helps if you describe it differently. It will help the reader to visualize exactly what is happening. Yes, we can all see a glowing hand or hear an unearthly voice, but next time when you describe the voice, what does it sound like? Yes it is unearthly, but what kind? Is it hoarse? Angelic? Fierce? Just keep that in mind. Especially in the cases of magic, the more description you use the easier it is to get across what exactly it looks like.

*deep breath* Alright. So, since all of this has happened, I'm going to have to do some serious damage control with Jilanne, so it may take me a little while. I'll have a post up soon.

And one last thing -

As is common with roleplays without actual plot, we are beginning to have several conflicting storylines. So fairly soon, something will happen that will unite and centralize the plot for the time being.

Once this has happened, newcomers will still be easily admitted, though not quite as simply "stuck in" as before. Keep this in mind.

I hope you all are learning, and I'm so glad that you have hung around!

Murloc_Hugger
06/02/2007 8:45 PM

So fairly soon, something will happen that will unite and centralize the plot for the time being.

Yay! :D

Seriously. I think my D&D thread is on the verge of dying, so that would be a good thing for me. Without a plot, I'd go though gaming withdrawl. *wheeze*...

Recko_glyph
06/02/2007 11:32 PM

Sorry for not posting after you Murloc, I was waiting for Mejuro to post something. Also since Murlocs character Explained to Quishtar what my pendant was, I thought you got (or at least partially got what was happening there. Basically (through what I was able to understand)

-You used healing spell

-Pendant reacts absorbing small amount of magic cast by Lillian

_ Mejuro (meditating) feels this and reacts by transforming into the black armoured figure

-That release of magic is partially absorbed as well and makes it glow back (which by now should be considered a bad omen since last time it happened Zombies where summoned)

-Also there's the message that Mejuro's character sent telepathically to Quishtar (I assume that he is the "boy" you meant)

-This confirms Quishtars suspicions and he starts pulling Lillian away from the Inn to get away from what's causing his pendant to react this way (Since Mejuro is in his room and we (Murloc and I) are still in the entrance area)

-I think that it's really my fault we've kind of gotten stuck because I feel (now) that the pendant should have waited. I do feel though that since Julius and Mablung seem t have disappeared its kind of helped pushed us into this spot.

I'm sorry for putting us in this situation.

P.S. Welcome back from vacation (or wherever you were) Jay

Murloc_Hugger
06/03/2007 12:00 AM

Jay's warning of dire events-to-come have spurred me on, finally.

Name: Ánië Melwasúl (in posts A'nie, because it'll drive me mad to go looking for accents and umlautz)

Sex: female

Race: half elf

Class: Ranger

Appearance: Ánië is slender and long-limbed, with long copper-coloured hair, and green eyes set in a face prone to seriousness, and marred only by a small scar bisecting her left eyebrow. She favours sylvan colours- greens and dark browns usually- in resilient and practical fabrics, and wears only light armour: usually no more than a toughened very dark green leather jerkin, on which the faint traces of faded embroidery can just be made out. She carries a yew longbow and quiver strung across her shoulders, and an unadorned hand and a half sword worn slightly forward on her right hip.
She is accompanied by her animal companion, a golden-eyed raven of considerable but not uncharacteristic intelligence named Gaoth ('gway').

Personality: Ánië is usually quite taciturn and composed, but has a dark sense of humour if encouraged. She is prone to forming quick initial impressions of people. but refrains from judgment until confirmed either way. She has seen enough in her life that she tends toward cynicism, particularly in any dealings with new people.

History: The product of a relationship between a human druid and a sylvan elf she initially followed the path her father, growing up in the grove. Ánië found she had little patience for spellcasting or hanging back during an encounter, preferring to settle things more directly, and so when older chose to walk a slightly different path, venturing out from the sanctuary she had known to gain a better understanding of the world at large.
She has spent most of her adult life travelling and exploring the wilds, but maintains strong ties with the grove and her father, but has in recent years come more frequently to 'civilisation'.

Quite brief as it's a training RP, edited slightly from Murlo's D&D thread. I'll try to see when there's an opportunity to drop in.

I'll probably have her having been in the town for a while- that way she'd be more inclined than a stranger to stay and help out at the inn.

If it gets out of hand then we can just have a posting-order.

Also since there are (as it seems) many different plot lines going, this is Quishtars "Checklist" so to speak:

Over time:

-Help Jillane with her Inn

- Bury his father

Deliver his cargo to the city (or a city for that matter)

-Go back home to tell his mother about what happened to his father

-Learn more about pendant

*This Is the order I think makes the most sense and basically will set Quishtar "free" to follow other characters on there quests, travels etc&

As for his current situation and state of mind

-Scared and confused (more confused) by what's happened/happening

-Trying to get Lillian and himself away from the Inn because his pendant is glowing again (this time black because of Mejuros character) seen in his eyes as a bad omen

Actually, I posted that before having read the part about her dying. I guess you'll have to either make a new character or use Henry. Unless you get her raised from the dead somehow.

You have made things quite a bit more complicated.

But don't worry, as long as everyone comes downstairs and pays their respects to Jilanne's body, then things will begin going a mite smoother.

nanuk
06/05/2007 1:27 PM

And remember guys, this is a training thread- so it's for all around practice (story-line, characterisation, writing style) rather than focusing too much on the one. I think just story has kind of taken over lately, so we need to keep that in mind in our posts (I'll be joining very soon, lol).

Recko, I don't think you screwed up- you just lost sight that the thread is about more than just Quishtar.
If you look at your list of goals they're all Quishtar-centric, and don't really consider what the other characters might be doing, i.e.

Trying to get Lillian and himself away from the Inn

what's everyone else going to be doing? Why would Lillian go with you?

That would be something that would need to be bounced off the other players before you tried to do it as it could potentially take over the story.

It's an interesting character and you're right to want to explore it, but if you did this in a normal thread that you weren't DMing you might tick the DM off, lol.

But no harm no foul- our intrepid captain is going to set us back on our course!

Oh really? Can your Final Fantasy get you out of a 100ft deep pit trap filled with poisoned spikes and ghouls? Can your Final Fantasy save you from a massive army of 8316 zombies? Can your Final Fantasy kill a Great Wyrm Red Dragon when you're down to 2 hp? Let's face it, when compared to D&D, Final Fantasy is utterly useless! It's magic system is completely inferior! And also, if the game is called "Final Fantasy", then how come there's ten of them? So which one is going to be the "final" one? 11? 15? 42?

(PS: Didn't anyone get my Order of the Stick reference?)

Perhaps we could both use a lesson in Internet Chat Implications 101.

I could use a class in plot development 101

I guess I can say I have some kind of "experience" in story writing. I guess it just hasn't kicked in that this is a team effort in creating something that none of us could have made on our own.

This is really where my real life enters my story writing I guess, as I've found myself either taking control (inadvertently) or submitting myself to other people's ideas (while I grind my teeth). I am in now way a control freak I just get to enthusiastic sometimes and in this case ignore/forget about the what the other characters are doing want to do.

Yeah I know Boo hoo for you , just know I'll try to contain myself in this aspect and try and read into other characters more.

Why would Lillian go with you?

.... Because I'm dead sexy =).

I actually never thought Murloc would let me get her out of the Inn because I read her bio and the whole part about,

The daughter of the infamous coward

Trying to prove that she is not a coward like her father since she started adventuring, and has successfully done so multiple times.

So I basically figured she'd go back inside the Inn.

If you look at your list of goals they're all Quishtar-centric

I was trying to see it from Quishtars point of view, but yeah it is really Quishtar-centric (except for the Inn part)

We just need everyone ELSE to go down there.

Now this is a good but somewhat difficult thing to do since only 3(4 if you count nanuk) of the 6 main characters (Mablung, Mejuro, Juilius and us) are truly interested and somewhat devoted to the thread.

Secretly I've wanted to see this happen because I have no idea what to do in this kind of situation and since Its now happened and I'll finally now what to do If it ever happens in a real thread.

100ft deep hole- pfft warp-FF1 or save point-FFX among others

poisoned spikes, and ghouls- um Antidote, Dia

8316 zombies-THE ALMIGHTY CURAGA/LIFEGA/DIA 10 and Phoenix down =)

2hp fighting Great Wyrm Dragon-LIMIT BREAK, switch party, Cait Sith-lucky roll, Summoning (in FF8 ), uh..that skill that casts revive when you die (sorry haven't played FF in a while)

and for a better idea of what Final Fantasy really is, [url:http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/58184] here you go

I actually hope that FF really never ends; They've just got that something that the other games lack.

Personally though FF tactics and FF8 are my favourites and LOD Is by far my favourite RPG of all time.

-So I guess D&D for you then?

...It's been done a few times

Also since you apparently have not played any Final fantasies,

Dia-Spell that hurts undead (or whatever you call them)

Warp- spell that warps you from dungeon

FF-X save points- you could go back to your airship from the save points

Antidote- cure poison

Curaga one of the highest Healing spells (Unless Curagun has been established as the next level), damages zombies/undead

Phoenix down- revive you, kill zombie

Limit break-super technique unleashed after enough time and damage

Summoning in FF8 - when you summoned in #8 you where replaced by your summon that had its own HP

uh..that skill that casts revive when you die (sorry haven't played FF in a while)

-The skill is called auto-life, revives you automatically when you die

Cait Sith- His " Limit break" was a slots thing and getting all of the same picture won you the battle automatically

Switch party- FF X (among others) you could switch out one party member for another during battle

how will all that technobabble save you when you wind up dead and in the stomach of a Great Wyrm Red Dragon?

*Reset*

Hexor- level

-Hp

-Flail damage range + extras (stun, poison etc...)

-Magic spells and damage ranges+ effect ranges

-Is there a certain way he fights (when he is full Hp, Mid HP, low MP, low HP)?

-Is there anything he is immune to?

-Can I attack his arms separately or him as a whole

-Everything you as a D&D player should know before engaging Hexor

Ok, I don't know what most of that means, but I'll try:

Level: Cleric20/Fighter20/Outsider20

Elemental Weaknesses: None

Hp: 20d8+180(outsider) plus 20d8+180(cleric) plus 20d10+180(fighter)

Flail Damage: 4d8+25 Extras: Lawful, Unholy, Ghost Touch

Magic Spells and Damage: All Cleric spells up to 9th level, plus all spells from the Destruction, Evil, Law, and War domains.

Tactics: Obliterate Everything. Absolutely Everything.

Immunities: Ability Damage, Ability Drain, Acid, Cold, Death Effects, Disease, Disintegration, Electricity, Energy Drain, Mind-Affecting Effects, Paralysis, Poison, Sleep, Stunning, Transmutation, Imprisonment, Banishment

No, you must attack him as a whole.

Everything you as a D&D player should know before engaging Hextor: He is the LAWFUL EVIL GOD OF TYRANNY!!! He won't just eat your soul, he will imprison it in an impossibly claustrophobic torture chamber for all eternity!!!

(edit: Sorry, I made a mistake about his flail damage. I forgot to take his Size Modifier into account.)

(Wow, I can't believe this all started over me making an obscure Order of the Stick reference.)

You're going to have to explain some stuff here since I've never played D&D

Maybe a website to help me figure it out?

Level: Cleric20/Fighter20/Outsider20

Is his primary class a Cleric, then sub Fighter, than sub Outsider (what is an outsider anyways) or is he all of them i.e. a Free-lancer in Final fantasy terms

Hp: 20d8+180(outsider) plus 20d8+180(cleric) plus 20d10+180(fighter)

Explain what 20d8+180 means please

Extras: Lawful, Unholy, Ghost Touch

Just tell me what they do I.E block magic, drain Hp, Block attack

Immunities: Ability Damage, Disintegration, Energy Drain, Transmutation, and Imprisonment

Ability damage?

Disintegration?

Energy drain- both magic and health energy?

Transmutation-Does this include shrinking you or turning you into a toad

Imprisonment- so is this magic block or a complete stop of your characters movement?

The only Acid and Disease things in Final fantasy that I think could relate to this would be the Zombie effect

Magic Spells and Damage: All Cleric spells up to 9th level, plus all spells from the Destruction, Evil, Law, and War domains.

Yeah, list and explain.

Tactics: Obliterate Everything. Absolutely Everything.

So doesn't hold back magic (uses up all Mp/ skills and ends up hitting me with his flail for an hour?)

No, you must attack him as a whole.

If that is the case, will he switch classes and go to full Hp/ mp of that class if he is dying in another one or is his Hp/MP going to be totalled?

I'll tell you my character specs based on where they are in my actual games (the ones I started over in, not my beaten)

-Do I fight with 1 character or more? (Traditionally 3/4 fight at a time, but usually 3)

Murloc_Hugger
06/06/2007 1:13 AM

Ok, just take it easy. I'll try to explain as much as I can.

Is his primary class a Cleric, then sub Fighter, than sub Outsider (what is an outsider anyways) or is he all of them i.e. a Free-lancer in Final fantasy terms

Outsider is a creature type. It basically means anything from another plane of existance. Yes, he is all of them. He has the abilities of a 20th level Cleric, Fighter, and Outsider.

Explain what 20d8+180 means please

In D&D, hit points are generated randomly by rolling dice. 1d8 means "one eight sided die". So 20d8 means "twenty eight sided dice". The "+180" is his bonud hit points from having a high Constitution modifer.

Just tell me what they do I.E block magic, drain Hp, Block attack

Lawful weapons deal extra damage to Chaotic-aligned creatures. Same with Unholy, but extra damage to Good creatures. Ghost Touch weapons can affect incoporeal creatures normally.

Ability damage?

Disintegration?

Energy drain- both magic and health energy?

Transmutation-Does this include shrinking you or turning you into a toad

Imprisonment- so is this magic block or a complete stop of your characters movement?

Ability damage is just that: damage done to your ability scores. Disintegrate is a spell that turns you into a fine ash. Energy Drain is when you lose levels from a magic effect. Yes, transmutation does include those things, as well as more things you've probably never heard of. No, Imprisonment is when you get imprisoned somewhere, usually either deep underground or on another plane of existance.

Yeah, list and explain.

If I were to list all of the Cleric spells, this post would take up at least the rest of the page.

So doesn't hold back magic (uses up all Mp/ skills and ends up hitting me with his flail for an hour?)

Basically, yes.

If that is the case, will he switch classes and go to full Hp/ mp of that class if he is dying in another one or is his Hp/MP going to be totalled?

Were you trying to make my head explode? I think I get the gist of it. His hit points and spell slots(not MP) are totalled, although Cleric is his only class that gets spells.

Do I fight with 1 character or more? (Traditionally 3/4 fight at a time, but usually 3)

Usually, a D&D group consists of about 4 players. It still won't do you any good.

QUOTED]
So doesn't hold back magic (uses up all Mp/ skills and ends up hitting me with his flail for an hour?)

Basically, yes.

Sadly, this can easily be countered by a single spell (but lets pretend it doesn't exist)

Murloc_Hugger
06/06/2007 1:54 AM

Sadly, this can easily be countered by a single spell (but lets pretend it doesn't exist)

In D&D, that spell would probably fall under Transmutation effects(which he is immune to). If not, he still has ridiculously high save bonuses. (Fortitude+58, Reflex+54, Will+54)

Also just so this doesn't get one sided I'll see If I can set up something on excel to run the fight

Why bother? You're completely screwed if he charges you. Keep in mind that I said "in D&D terms", so you can't do

9k damage per hit, hitting ten times, then taking a final 15k damage...

And also, it's HexTOR, not HexOR.

In case you missed what I just posted, this is in a D&D universe, and the most damaging spell in D&D does 24d6 points of damage, so there's no way you could kill Hextor in one hit, as he is immune to Death Effects.

we're putting this around lvl 20 for the Final fantasy characters

So around what power level is that in Final Fantasy? Low level? Mid level? High level?

And also, about that video you posted, that's nothing compared to what Hextor can do. Just think about it: an average of 43 points of damage per attack, 19 attacks, while the average 20th level fighter has about 300 hit points, with members of other classes having less than that. Yeah. Instant annihilation.

anyways lets hold off till we learn more about the 2 subjects (rent a game and I'll uh...what do D&D people do?)

Go to a book store(such as Barnes and Noble) and ask where the D&D books are. You'll need the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, and if you want to know Hextor's stats(which you will, if you are to truly understand how powerful he is), you'll also need Deities and Demigods.

By the way, is the latest Final Fantasy available on PC? I don't have a playstation or anything, these days all I play is computer games. And also, what IS the latest Final Fantasy? I think it might be 10, but I don't play those games, so I'm not sure.

One more thing: if we actually do have this battle, let's do it on a different thread(i.e. one in the RP Talk Section), lest Jay murder us in our sleep.

ok, just to end this arguement... or at least try i have two things that neither Cloud (or any FF character can beat)) or any D&D character could beat (yes i play both FF and D&D)

1. God.. sorry this guy controls all, he's be able to wipe you from ever exisitng and your parents too, so don't even argue with that :)

2. ok slightly more in the spirit of this debate, but Anearion, first Phoenix King of the HIgh Elves, he drew the sword of kaine and was empowered by both kaine and Asuryan could pwn them as he singlehandly destroyed the 4 most powerful deamons to have manifested from the forces of Chaos.

Well I don't know where Jay lives, or how old she is, but here in America you almost always have to take either the SAT or the ACT in order to be considered for college. They are also usually administered on a Saturday morning. Why they do it then, I have no idea.

Good luck, whatever it is, Jay. If I remember correctly, I had a 2110 on the new SAT, but if you just took the old parts it was a 1450. I never took the ACT, so I don't know how that is, but the SAT was pretty easy. You seem intelligent to me, so you'll do fine.

I'm going to lean with nanuk on this one before I post again. Sometimes in a roleplaying situation you will be confronted with the unknown. So honestly, write like it just happened. I apologize that you are no longer in control of your environment, but thats just part of learning how to work with a GM. Learning experience.

And Recko did exactly what was called for. Excellent!

Wow that sucks, I've heard people get really stressed for tests like that. Personally I don't think I'm ready for a test like that.

I had a Biology test earlier this year (I forget on what) and afterwards I felt like I was partially brain dead or something. I had to redial the phone 8 times because I kept messing up my home number. 0.o

It wasn't hard or anything it was just really stressful and I had worried about it a lot

Is that good?

What's the best you can get on those again?

A perfect score on the SAT is a 1600. The highest score for the ACT is a 36.

o.0 1600 to 36?

I'm guessing 36 would be the grade.

I'm going to lean with nanuk on this one before I post again. Sometimes in a roleplaying situation you will be confronted with the unknown. So honestly, write like it just happened. I apologize that you are no longer in control of your environment, but thats just part of learning how to work with a GM. Learning experience.

Yeah, but how can you expect me to post more than a few sentences if all that's happening is "the room is pitch black"? I know Recko may be able to write those monstrous posts, but my descriptive skills just aren't that good.

(edit)Ok, fine, I'll try, but don't expect much.

Well, use it to explore your character

Like when I was first knocked out. I used it to reveal Quishtars history. If she's been on adventures before maybe she will think about something similar that has happened on her many adventures

Or just play with what's happening. As you can see I effected nothing and yet was effected by what's happening (being hit down stairs by smoke, wandering in the dark) or you can look to that post where I got back to speed with the story (When he goes to the forest) for a better example. Just stop before the zombies

*Sigh*

Any ways I hope this helps you out

Part of the purpose of the thread is to challenge the posters- so consider yourself challenged, lol.
It's forcing you to be more creative and descriptive- two things RPers should never stop practicing.

I love setting biology papers.
I'm nice though, I usually give some choice of questions.

I mark diagrams fiendishly though. My trusty red pen never gets a rest.

You know what's awesome?

At my college, we had entrance exams (I'm pretty sure all of them do) and on the math test, I scored so high I got institutional credit for every math class up to and including Pre-Calculus 2.

Which meant that the first math class I would have to take would be Calc 1, but my major only requires up to Pre-Calc 2.

In short, I don't have to take any maths. :P

Also, I had received college credit for one english class, so I only had to take one English Class, and I got college credit for US Gov, so I don't have to take a Poli Sci class.

Oh, I love AP classes. :D

[edit] okay, sorry for the off-topicness. I'm done now. You may return to your RP.

Well its been 4 days.

Does this mean this thread is dead?

If so then I'll be slightly depressed because it is partially (more than partially) my fault and you can say its not, but deep inside we know I derailed this train. I'm not giving up on this thing, but since everyone seems to be somewhere else (Seas of San Tosa Chapter I: A Pirate's Life) I might have to drop it.

I will wait 20 days before I give it up

Don't worry though, this is on my list of THINGS JAY REALLY REALLY NEEDS TO POST IN. I'm working on it.

Besides. Four days is nothing. When this thread originally died, we brought it back after like, a year.

Lillian, startled by the sudden appearance of the eyes, held up her rapier, jumped, and drove it straight into the center of the pupil of the left eye. She tried to pull it out, but it stayed stuck in there, as if it were being grasped by some terribly strong hand. She continued to pull and pull, but to no avail.

Er, Murloc- considering you've so much experience in D&D do you not think that maybe you shouldn't automatically assume you hit something?

They are now in a completely new dimension: they have no idea what the particular properties of the dimension are, never mind what the properties of any glowing eyes are.

Considering whisking people away to its own personal playground is something the pixie seems quite familiar with I doubt it would be unprotected- Jay's been busy so I don't think she's been on much, but I would imagine that if she created the creature with the power to instantly transport numerous people to alternate dimensions then she would have created it with the ability not to be stuck in the eye with a rapier.

What you've done is another form of puppeting/bunnying: you've assumed qualities about a character you didn't create- you assumed it could be attacked with a normal weapon, that you would auto-hit it, and that the weapon would then for some reason get stuck there.

I know in terms of Lillian's demeanour it made sense for her to attack, but considering none of us know anything about the pixie yet in this kind of situation you should really check with the DM to see if what you had planned would even work.
If you wanted to make the attack a surprise and not check first then what you would do is have it at the end of the post, and simply say she attacked, leaving the DM to post the outcome.

Monsters/enemies in threads, if you know they're not just generic fodder there to be slaughtered before moving on, are creations of other people just the same as PCs are, and a lot of the same rules apply- you wouldn't have posted that you leapt at Jilane and stuck a rapier in her eye, so why would this, with the character Jay is now playing, be different?

Murloc_Hugger
06/17/2007 1:07 PM

Look, I never said that it actually hit the eye, I just said that she couldn't move it once she attacked, so it appeared that way. And I never said that she had actually injured the devil(or whatever it is), quite the opposite: It apparently ignored her attack.

Also: how can I be expected to type out a full post if all that happens is "she attacks the eye"? Imagine if I had posted this instead:

Lillian freaks out. She jumps up and tries to stab the eye with her rapier! End of post.

You see, if I had posted that, you would be yelling at me for lack of description or something like that right now. I'm doing the best that I can, but sometimes it takes a lot of effort just to get a decent sized post. I didn't mean to puppet/bunny, and I had no idea that you would interpret it that way.

One more thing: There's a difference between a "character" and a "villain". A "character" is one of the protagonists in a game like this, while, conversely, a "villain" is one of the antagonists. So this imp is clearly a villain, which means it is not a character. You don't "play" a villain, you "run" a villain. I do agree that in forums like this, you shouldn't be able to kill an important villain without the DM's permission, but that's not what I did. I attacked it without even being able to harm it.

nanuk
06/17/2007 1:57 PM

Calm down.

You're in this thread presumably because you want some constructive criticism and that's what you're getting.

And I never said that she had actually injured the devil(or whatever it is), quite the opposite: It apparently ignored her attack.

I didn't mention injuring or damage, did I?
You hit it- you assumed that the rapier would actually hit it and stick in it, which was what I mentioned. How did you know it wouldn't have some kind of protective shield up or even that it was insubstantial?
You didn't know, you assumed- which was my point. You can't assume things about another character in a thread.
This pixie is a character in the thread, not some flunky or fodder, but there's more on this later.

Lillian freaks out. She jumps up and tries to stab the eye with her rapier! End of post.

Stop being silly- all you needed to do was restructure your post so the attack came at the end rather than the beginning. It makes as much sense for her to shout at it about being transported to another dimension and then attacking as it does the other way around.
There's nothing to say that it's only possible to do a one line post- we've already said introspection is something that could be done here or, heaven forbid, there might actually be some character interaction because you decide to talk to one of your companions.

You see, if I had posted that, you would be yelling at me for lack of description or something like that right now. I'm doing the best that I can, but sometimes it takes a lot of effort just to get a decent sized post. I didn't mean to puppet/bunny, and I had no idea that you would interpret it that way.

Firstly, I don't yell, and stop taking it personally- as I've already mentioned it's a training post, so the whole point is to get feedback.
Secondly of course it takes effort, and I never said it didn't- but the whole point of something like this in a thread is to challenge the writers. A lot of the satisfaction comes from the effort.
What enjoyment would you get from the thread if you didn't even have to pause to think about what to post? This is supposed to help you improve in descriptive RP writing- description doesn't just refer to what's physically around the character and what they can see. This situation gives you a great chance to delve deeper into the character, look at their emotions and reactions- can you honestly say that if you, yourself, got transported to an alternate dimension unexpectedly (and it doesn't matter that your character lives in a world with magic because it's still bloody unexpected) all you'd have to say/feel about it could be written in two lines?

One more thing: There's a difference between a "character" and a "villain"

No there isn't- a villain is a character:

[url:http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/villain]Villain:
2. a character in a play, novel, or the like, who constitutes an important evil agency in the plot.
A dramatic or fictional character who is typically at odds with the hero.

[url:http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/character]Character:
1. the aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing.
8. a person, esp. with reference to behavior or personality: a suspicious character.
10. a person represented in a drama, story, etc.
11. a part or role, as in a play or film.
A person portrayed in an artistic piece, such as a drama or novel. etc.

What makes you think a villain isn't a character?
It's a role, described in the game, with particular qualities and actions, forming part of the story.

Plenty of threads here have people playing villains.

A "character" is one of the protagonists in a game like this, while, conversely, a "villain" is one of the antagonists. So this imp is clearly a villain, which means it is not a character

[url:http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/antagonist]Antagonist:
# One who opposes and contends against another; an adversary.
# The principal character in opposition to the protagonist or hero of a narrative or drama.

I'm not sure why you think an antagonist is not a character, but it intrinsically is.

I attacked it without even being able to harm it.

It's not relevant that you didn't harm it- you didn't just attack it you hit it. That was my point- if you were playing D&D- and I know we keep saying this isn't D&D but in this case this is the same and it's a good example- you would not roll and say 'I attack the imp and my rapier sticks in its eye'. You say you attack and the DM tells you what happens.

Murloc_Hugger
06/17/2007 4:22 PM

I'm not sure why you think an antagonist is not a character, but it intrinsically is.

No, I didn't mean character as in

1. the aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing.
8. a person, esp. with reference to behavior or personality: a suspicious character.
10. a person represented in a drama, story, etc.
11. a part or role, as in a play or film.
A person portrayed in an artistic piece, such as a drama or novel. etc.

I meant a character as in the context of a roleplaying game.

Plenty of threads here have people playing villains.

That's not what I meant either. A "villain" can also mean an NPC opposing the main characters, even if those characters are evil and the villain is good.

nanuk
06/17/2007 4:35 PM

A "villain" can also mean an NPC opposing the main characters

Clearly- the threads I mentioned have people 'playing' villains opposite other main PCs in the thread, they're villains just as equally as any NPCs might be. It was to illustrate my point that you were wrong in saying you couldn't play villains, only run them- which was addressing what you said originally.

I meant a character as in the context of a roleplaying game.

Of course a villain can still be a character in the context of a RPing game- that was what all the definition-quoting was to illustrate.
A villain doesn't need to be played by a player in the thread, it can just be 'run' by the DM, but that doesn't always need to be the case- which is my point here: Jay can 'play' the pixie as a character. Just because he is a villain doesn't mean he isn't a character.

CandlestickJay
06/17/2007 7:51 PM

And for God sakes, whoever said my lovely imp was a VILLAIN? I mean SERIOUSLY.

Murloc, I'm sorry that you are taking such a huge offense at this, but this is, as nanuk said, a training thread, and she is posting valid points. The point of this thread is to point out things that may get you into trouble in the future. While it may not matter in some of the threads you are in, if you tried to enter Flark's Age of Descent with this kind of attitude I think you would find yourself knee-deep in horse crap with your GM/DM.

As far as the post goes, the eye IS, as nanuk so brillantly put it -

insubstantial

Sorry that I haven't made every single tiny thing clear to you. After all, if I did, wouldn't it make it a little lame?

BTW guys, in three seconds a horde of zombies are going to jump in and command that you bow down before the zombie queen, and then she's going to appear and attempt to mind control you, only to be revealed as the dead Jilanne.

Oh yes. That would make this roleplay very, very exciting.

Murloc_Hugger

As far as the post goes, the eye IS, as nanuk so brillantly put it -

Well, I didn't know that, and I needed something to post. And I never said it WASN'T insubstantial, there could be some kind of invisible force holding the rapier in place. I mean, come on, in a world where giant flying lizards with fire/acid/lightning/poison/ice breath exist and people come back from the dead on a regular basis, it can't be that hard to imagine that a sword could be kept from moving by telekinetic energy(or something like that).

And for God sakes, whoever said my lovely imp was a VILLAIN? I mean SERIOUSLY.

Ummm, horns? Claws? Weird runes on skin? Killing people? Pitch black alternate dimension? Calling us "playthings"? Maybe the the fact that it's an IMP??? Oh, and the eyes, can't forget about the eyes. I'm telling you, that thing is Pure Evil. Ok, maybe not PURE evil, but still evil. Blatantly obviously so.

nanuk
06/18/2007 3:03 AM

it can't be that hard to imagine that a sword could be kept from moving by telekinetic energy(or something like that).

Grah!
It equally can't be that hard to imagine that the sword would never strike in the first place!
That the telekinetic energy would stop it from reaching the eye, or that, the eye being insubstantial, it would just pass through it.
Or that Lillian was obliterated in a blaze of light when she tried.
Or vaporised by ghostly fire.
Or bounced back painfully by a repelling forcefield.
Or transported to yet another parallel dimension.
Or polymorphed into a rabid squirrel.
Or that she found her senses had been magically confused in this unknown dimension and she'd actually plunged her rapier through one of the other PC's hearts.

Any of those outcomes and more were equally as likely as the players know nothing about where they are- and that's our point!
You can't assume things like that in an RP.

Murloc_Hugger
06/18/2007 4:17 PM

Well, I would agree that these are all valid points if this was a tabletop game. But isn't this specifically a free-form forum? In that case, guess what: it's not a big deal. If whether or not my character hit the eye mattered to the overall plot, I could see why you're getting so worked up over this. But does it? I didn't think so.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't everyone having, oh, I don't know, fun be more important than every single thing being the exact way you want it to, when you want it to? Even if this was tabletop, a DM that overly controlling would ruin the players' fun(not to mention his own fun, once all of the players left).

nanuk
06/18/2007 4:44 PM

Oh good lord.

I don't understand why you don't get it.

If the situation was reversed, and Jay had jumped up and stabbed your character in the eye you would be pissed.
This is no different- and don't start that 'a villain is not a character' again, because that's been covered, and it is.

Jay is playing that character, and you cannot autohit other PCs.

Alright we're together now happy?

Hi everybody! I've got 2 more exams but I should be able to post again now so lets get on with the show i guess.

On What Murloc and you ladies have been arguing about I again have some what of an inquiry.

Since you aren't allowed to bunny/puppet how far can you bend a story and is there anymore power given o any specific person other than DM (Which in this case would be Jay I guess).

I mean It can be stressful thinking ways to move a story without moving a story (if you get my drift)

Also are you supposed to tell people what ur planning so openly. I mean maybe you should tell us to group up and maybe even to tell us about zombies (-_-), but telling us its Jillane is like ruining the end of a generic horror film. Sure you know how it will end, but you wanna see the twists

Lol honey. Don't worry what I posted ISN'T what is going to happen, I promise.

Since you aren't allowed to bunny/puppet how far can you bend a story and is there anymore power given o any specific person other than DM (Which in this case would be Jay I guess).

This usually depends on the DM. In our specific case, we're trying to keep it mainly to myself and nanuk (we discuss mostly everything though) for training purposes, to bring about situations that will test ya'll as players and to encourage questions, like the ones you are asking now.

In other threads though, the GM may prefer to take more of a player role than an "all-seeing leader", and simply guides, and encourages the players to do their own thing. The problem with this, in my own opinion, is that to a certain extent everyone wants their player to be the Blade, or the Frodo, or the Jack Sparrow of the adventure. Everyone wants to be important, and necessary to the adventure, the plot turner or twister. But if everyone is adding their own plot twists and turns...well, you end up with a disaster zone. Carefully put together, this can work, but it requires lots of communication, and the right people who work together and respect each other.

For now we stick with scenario one. Eventually I'd like to see a "tips of GM/DM ing" thread for FFRP threads, where we talk about what makes a good GM/DM and how to as you said "move a story" without actually moving a story. But that is another time, another place.

CandlestickJay
06/18/2007 9:47 PM

Here is another thing I'd like to point out -

The environment in which your character resides in is VERY IMPORTANT. Small details can make or break the action, depending on how things are going. Like remembering to include that there is an axe hanging on the wall above the fireplace would be very important should a zombie bust through your window.

So when posting, especially as a DM/GM, include those. If you are posting and by yourself, or someone has just entered your house, don't just include dialogue. Include an description about the place they are talking in. It also helps in fleshing out your posts. Ya'll will have a chance to practice this in a little while, under controlled conditions of course.

Recko_glyph
06/18/2007 10:07 PM

Ya'll

That brings back memories...good times...good times.

Thanks for the info and tips I think I'm gonna sign off today and I give le High five to you for placing me into bizzaro world

I've got an idea about what you want to happen, but perhaps you've something more to share?

Sure, sounds good.

I'm morphing into her!

She failed her Will save? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

If we get stuck, and find the story is moving too slowly with the few characters some people could always play two characters- we could just whizz them into the weirdiverseI think that's definitely more of a Lillian term than a pixie one ;).

Ok, I'm nearly ready to put up a post, just have to tweak it.

The point of what's going to be happening is to put your characters in different situations where different things will be required- magic, teamwork etc.
You'll be told the 'rules' for each challenge (remember, to the imp this is all a big game), and given hints as to what's required.
Some of these hints I'll post here, or will be littered in the tread post as if given by the imp, for others I may need to internal mail you... or maybe just post it here- the more things that are known the easier it will be for people to give feedback.

Storywise, it's going to be quite linear for you- do this to get here- but within that there's huge scope for how you do the thing required, and room for character development interaction.
So, basically, the goal for players- or victims, mwahah- is to really focus on different types of description (this'll become obvious as we progress), adding detail, reactions of their characters etc.
It sounds rigid set out like that but it won't be.

I'm going to introduce my main PC soon- as her sheet is way back here's a reminder:

If we get stuck, and find the story is moving too slowly with the few characters some people could always play two characters- we could just whizz them into the weirdiverse

Hmmm... I did have an idea for a comic relief character a while back, but haven't gotten to use it yet. I'll keep it in mind just in case we do get stuck. Just signal me if you need another character.

I think that's definitely more of a Lillian term than a pixie one ;).

Well, I feel that it's highly important to "think like your character". :D

Be afraid, be very afraid...

Dun dun DUN DUN DUN DUNH!!!

(edit) Wow, how did you manage to post all of that before I could post all of this? Oh well, since you posted yours, I'm going to post the bio for that character I mentioned earlier. Just tell me if you need him now, later, or not at all. (Note: I almost got to use this character in the New World thread, but it died before he got to say more than a few sentences.)

Name: Spizzak

Male

Race: Half-Orc

Class: Fighter

Appearance: Spizzak has greenish-gray skin and yellow eyes. He wears a suit of well used and beaten full plate armor, and wields a greatsword in combat.

Personality: Spizzak is extremely stupid. He means semi-well, but always seems to do the wrong thing at the wrong time. He never is aware of just how stupid he really is. However, he hasn't needed to be raised from the dead yet, demonstrating the definition of "dumb luck". His favorite things are fighting, shinies, and food. Not necessarily in that order.

History: A former pirate, Spizzak was thrown off of the ship during a mutiny. Since coming to land, he has been recruited by a few adventuring parties, all of which he either got killed or got himself kicked out of. He is currently unemployed.

(If you don't like this one, I can come up with another one if you want.)
