Uhm. I dunno what all to say really. Playing for 10+ years of my life has given me a pretty good idea of what I do and do not prefer in gaming and gaming partners, even though I can't always articulate that preference here. I tend to play characters that are emotionally volatile, often broody or angsty and usually not the most dominant of the characters being played. Not to say they're some submissive little namby pamby but if there's a set of brothers you can bet I'm the younger one. I like the dynamic of those sorts of relationships. The Leonardo/Raphael dynamic, as I like to call it. I like plots where enemies or unlikely allies or just irritable teammates, are thrown together. I like snark and lightheartedness and romance, but I also like dark and violent and creepy. It's all got it's place.

I have too much time on my hands and I can't find my paints since we moved (sad lack of artsssss, sad)...a year and a half ago, so I'm always looking for new distractions. Weee. I should be doing dishes and laundry instead of this, buuuuuut, oh well :-)

How RaytheWicked got into roleplaying:
Y'know, I don't even really remember how I got into online roleplaying . Must have been bored as a kid and wandered into a rpg chatroom. That was back when MSN chatrooms were real big and there was actually a section in entertainment for Role Playing Games. I spent a lot of time in the X-Men one and actually had a couple myself. Oh those were the days of hammers to kick out the spammers and god moders. Heee. Nerdy. Since then I've found friends in various places (real life, fanfiction.net, message boards, etc) and kept up games usually over aim or some other instant messenger. I have run several sites, but only one of them took off and was active for a time, but fandoms tend to come in waves and TMNT has been under-active for awhile now so all the regulars went by the wayside.

I was always big on playing pretend as a kid. Yeah, I was that second grader who demanded to play Raphael instead of April O'Neil on the playground and raced around yelling, "Let's get serious, Guys" when my friends were out of character. *facepalm* As I got older and it got less socially acceptable, I think I just gravitated online. Haa. I've wanted to be an actress and a writer at different times in my life mostly because I just love the story of it all, getting to continue to play pretend (and be paid for it? Sweeet). I love Video Games too. I played WoW for years, although I finally called it quits and can't look at it anymore. I love Legend of Zelda, Elder Scrolls, etc. I do have a couple of tabletop games I play (and I GM a Dresden Files one), but I have to say I don't like the rules and structure nearly as much as just freeform gaming. I also co-wrote and hosted an X-Men themed freeform Murder Myster Game with 30 players. That was epic planning but epic fun.

Some helpful hints for new players getting into RPGs:
Don't be afraid to ask for pointers and don't be offended to receive well-meaning advice.

Other than that: A good rule of thumb for a successful game is to have a Reaction to the actions around you and then add an Action yourself. That way one person doesn't end up doing all the work of mapping out a plot. This is especially important if you are working in a freeform style game as I prefer and don't have a GM or dice roll to direct your movement and plots.

Here is an example of what I mean, starting with the WRONG way to do it.

Wrong Example:

Leo went to the kitchen to grab a snack. Action

Raphael looked up to see Leo come in. Reaction

"How was your morning," Leonardo asked. Action

"Eh, it was okay," Raphael answered. Reaction

Right Example:

Leo went to the kitchen to grab a snack. Action

Raphael looked up to see Leo come in (Reaction) and hunched over to hide the newspaper he was reading. (Action)

Leonardo craned his neck to look as he walked by (Reaction) and asked, "How was your morning?" (Action)

"Eh, it was okay," Raphael answered (Reaction) , standing up and heading for the trash can to dispose of the incriminating paper. (Action)

Have an idea of what your character is doing and why. Even if it doesn't end up as an integral part of the story it gives them motivation and if the plot starts to wane you will have that action to fall back on.
