How Geistlinger got into roleplaying:
By accident. I was going away to school when I was about 14, and I asked my mother to get me a game for my birthday. The description I gave her of the one I wanted was pretty vague, and she ended up getting something that, while fitting the description I gave her, was not what I had in mind. The game I asked for was a war game, and I did in fact manage to get it later in life (though for the life of me I can't remember the name of it right now.) She got me the Dungeons and Dragons basic set, Red Dragon on the box, blue rule book for those who want to see me date myself. Long story short, it was the happiest mistake ever, as it lead to a life-long hobby.

Some helpful hints for new players getting into RPGs:
Start out with one of the less complex roles. i.e. A fighter in D&D. Although, that said, don't let a little complexity scare you away from a role you are really excited about. Don't worry about the rules. We cynical veterans may know you shouldn't take on a dragon with naught but a sling, but don't let that stop you from trying it. I, for one, am willing to let new people get away with stunts that are a bit outrageous as long as you are having fun, and entertaining me. Don't be afraid to ask questions, as with anything, you'll never learn if you don't ask. The only stupid question is the one left unasked. And most of all, have fun. If you can get this last part down, you're golden.
