| Tuesday January 12, 2010 8:27 PM Greetings gentlemen of the RPG Consortium,
I have to ask, as a long time player and supporter of Roleplaying Games - both board, video, and of the media I come here to question: Does anyone play MUDs anymore? I think this is an art we've all forgotten, or simply were never aware of. There's MUDs of all sorts, encouraging exactly what we're all doing in a forum - from StarWars, to Lord of the Rings, to random fantasy/scifi based MUDs presenting the same options. I myself play currently on a MUD called SW:GI - a StarWars based MUD, but in the past I've played from fantasy MUDs like ShadowGate, and whatever random, roleplay-enforced MUD that catches my glance - and I think a lot of people are missing out. Am I off base? Does anyone else beyond the few people I've seen traversing the texts know that these great pillars of video games past exist? |

| Saturday January 16, 2010 11:22 AM I still pop into Castle Arcanum from time to time myself. The thing I like about it is the variety of areas. It's not strictly Lord of the Rings, Sci-Fi, or Mythology. It has areas dedicated to different things.
For example:
Olympus- Greek Mythology
The Norse Realms- Norse mythology
Pepperland- The Beatles (Yes, an area dedicated to the Beatles)
MTV Studios- Basically, MTV studios. You find Pauly Shore and Beavis and Butthead there, but this area also accesses.....
Sesame Street- Or rather, a somewhat twisted version of it.
There's also a host of original areas created by past players. Dragon Valley, Hammerheim, The Pit, The Boneyard, and the city of Kaersblade. (I started playing here about 10 years ago, can you tell?)
They've recently revamped the multiclass system and added an option for players who achieve the 100 levels available to Mortals.
While I'm pretty sure I just responded to a bot bait, I still wanted to get this out so the rest of you would understand my rpg background a little better. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to pop back into my text based world for a while. SisqAlpha took Mother Nature from behind. We refer to it as the Big Bang.

| Saturday January 16, 2010 11:59 PM Can someone explain to me what a MUD is? Never heard of it."They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety." -Benjamin Franklin
"Nor would I, were I given the full rights of an Englishman. But to call me one without those rights is like calling an ox a bull. He's thankful for the honor, but he'd much rather have restored what's rightfully his."- Ben Franklin in 1776 |

| Wednesday January 20, 2010 5:12 PM With gusto! A MUD is your video game broken down, it's DnD virtually.
For example, here is one of the rooms on my vessel in StarWars: Galactic Insights:
- Meditation Chamber -
----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
This room, able only to accomodate a single occupant at a time, is the
primary reason for the extension to the ship's hull. The walls are plain
and well-insulated to prevent any distractions from either the rest of the
ship, or the galaxy at large. The floor is made of a soft, pliable
substance that gives slightly underfoot and would allow for comfortable
sitting. Along the port bulkhead is a comfortable bunk and desk, while the
starboard wall holds a small countertop for projects to be worked on in
private.
----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
Obvious Exits:
North - Entry Corridor
South - Engine Access
----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
Most MUDs, as with Galactic Insights, demand RP, but give you the freedom to design your character to your specifications - asking only that if you pick a Wookiee, that you act the norm for your species - or in the least, have a reason for why you're different. Most have a timeline, or a background - and the Immortals/Administrators serve as your DM, or intermediary.
P.S. Bot bait? Ouch.

| Friday January 22, 2010 5:31 PM Cool, you aren't a bot.
I wish Arcanum had been a little more into the RP aspect of the game. But how in the hell would you role play in an area based on Beatles music, especially after visiting The Rocky Horror Picture Show? C'mon man..... I remember that one of the best items you could have in that game was a pair of Brad Majors' underwear enchanted by a high level Mage.... It's odd how some things just stick in your head.
Have you ever played Achaea (sp?) or do you stick mostly with the Sci-Fi muds?SisqAlpha took Mother Nature from behind. We refer to it as the Big Bang.

| Friday January 22, 2010 7:26 PM I've jumped around a bit - trying to promote both SW:GI and MUDding in general at this point.
I've played a large myriad of MUDs throughout my career, most recently playing ShadowGate in the terms of a fantasy MUD however. Never played specifically on any called Achea,to my memory, and from your description it'd be quite memorable.
I admit to soundin' a bit like a bot, but membership is dying across the boards - everywhere. |
