Tools of Paranormal Investigations

The instrument used to read sources of energy is the EMF, or the Electromagnetic Field Detector. Procedure in an investigation is to take readings around any possible energy source in the area, such as electrical outlets or major appliances. When the EMF projects an energy surge where there should not be one, or an energy reading higher than normal in a select area, researchers can track the ghost by it’s energy trail.

Night vision scopes, while quite expensive, give the researchers an illuminated look at the area they are investigating. This is an important factor because the haunting hours are considered to be from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am and when most investigating takes place; other than the interviewing and a preliminary look at the area involved.

Unfortunately, not everyone can afford night vision scopes, so a flashlight comes in pretty handy in the dark of night. The lens of the flashlight should be covered with a red filter, so that the researchers can retain their night vision instead of being blinded by a bright light. Spirit activity drains batteries faster than normal usage, so be sure to take plenty of extra batteries along for anything that requires them.

Rapid drops in temperature are considered a means by which investigators can tell when a spirit is nearby. Thus the importance of a thermometer or a thermal scanner can be considerable in detecting the presence of a paranormal visitor.

A regular old compass is another way to gauge that a spirit is nearby. When the compass will not point out the heading that it should, and continuously keeps moving, it is a good indication that spirits are at play.

Motion detectors detect movement of any object, but will also detect forces unseen by the human eye. The only caution with using them, is that anything can set one off, so it must be placed in a clear area with little moveable debris or vegetation.

Since there will probably be more than one person researching the haunting at the same time, hand held radios can be useful when investigating over a large area. They are helpful in case of emergencies, to rotate a group from one section or another, or to let other researchers know when spirit activity has been located. The only problem with walkie talkies is that they could possibly drown out any EVP that may be taking place at that time.

These items are only a few of the instruments used on a paranormal investigation. Are there procedures to follow to ensure a successful ghosthunt, or tips that could make or break the investigation? Where are the best places for the setting of your game, and what type of spirit are you dealing with? If you already know the answers to these questions, then the links provided may not interest you. If you would like to see the complete list of tools that paranormal investigators use and you are interested in learning more about ghosthunting, then feel free to follow these links to a treasure trove of useful information.

Incorporating tools such as these into a roleplaying ghosthunts adds a realistic touch to your paranormal setting. Did one of your players forget to cover his flashlight with a red covering and manage to blind one of the other players? How in the world could anyone investigating ghosts forget to bring extra batteries? Now the video camera won’t function and tonight is a night of heightened solar flare activity, giving spirits extra sources of energy to tap into, making them more active. Did your players remember to say a prayer before they began ghosthunting, and close their expedition with another prayer to tell the spirits to stay where they belong and not follow them home? They didn’t? Guess they did not follow the links above and find out what could happen. Hmmm......wonder if they will be around to read the next issue!!!!!!
