Anyway, just finished my first playthrough of this one. I'd dubbed the first Mass Effect my favorite game of all time, so the sequel had an awful lot to live up to.
And I have absolutely no problem declaring that it topped the original, in my eyes.
The Good: The action was more fast-paced this time around, really getting the adrenaline pumping in some firefights. No inventory system, which might be a complaint for most, but given how the original overloaded you with weapons you didn't need, with an inventory system that made sorting through it all a nightmare, only coming across those few that you'll actually use was a big plus. The feeling that you really needed everyone at their best to have a chance in the end, even if that might not be the case.
The Not as Good: The larger cast than the original made it a little harder to connect with all the crew members. Though each character was excellently developed, I found myself only really caring about half of them. Not enough weight given to the major choices from the original; there were only select times when they were referenced, and it always seemed to be in passing.
Excellent second act to the story, and I already find myself wishing I had the conclusion in my hands to see what happens next.
Was waiting for your review on this one (and Khir's)! I've heard really good things, and am happy to see that those weren't puffed up by the critics. I trust people's opinions in here more than a review by a "professional". I look forward to picking this one up - sadly, it's going to be taking a back seat to Bioshock 2, which I am picking up today!

Just rented and beat this one over the last few days. I learned just how much weight I can lose by not eating for 3 days.
I have to agree its a great game, though I was a little disappointed about the removal of the free roaming planet exploration. Instead you get to scan every planet one at a time which gets boring fast.
I'm a little torn on the lack of an inventory. It was hell sorting through ME1's, but there was the bonus of being able to spec your gear for different enemy types.
And a final note to any BioWare staff that may come across this: I WILL find out what Quarians look like even if I have to hunt down each of your artists one by one!

Like Nix, I've been playing the crap out of this game too. Borrowed it from a friend. I enjoy it a lot more than the first one, game-play wise. It seems a lot more fluid. Haven't beat it yet, but it's definitely been a fun ride so far.

I agree, of course, with everything you said Oobie. (Sorry for the delay DD )
SPOILERS BELOW
Loved it, the whole way along thinking 'wow, I can't believe this tops how much I loved the first one', wishing my decisions had a bit more weight than just in the news stories (cool though they were) but then left a little cold by how much I didn't really care about my party members- except Garrus and Tali (and Mordin, natch. Oh, and
No surprise my favourite part of the whole thing was romancing Garrus, lol. Adorable. (well, him and my sniper rifle).
Actually, all of my favourite parts involved him. Figured out who archangel was about half way through the mission; paused and literally ran into my brother demanding to know if I was right, coudln't stop grinning. His reveal was ace, and the whole trying to keep him alive thing suitable stressful. Thought his loyalty mission was fantastic as well. I think my entirely favourite moment in the game was just the cut scene of sitting in the car with him talking. It was great to carry that kind of connection over and really helped with the immersion.
Was initially put off by the change in inventory system because I like collecting and selling stuff but it was a minor beef- and being able to have a pet space hamster got me over it pretty quickly.
Similarly, I was initially put off by the streamlining of powers but again I got used to it. and found with how quickly they recharge the lack of them was pretty much a non issue. I do, though, wish their use hadn't been so... prodded? If I want to use incinerate on an enemy that it's not going to work on let me. Let me make the mistake and learn. It was handy, yes, but it just felt a bit cheap. Would have felt more natural if it was a kind of learned process- after encountering enemies and trying out powers on them that didn't work then it wouldn't highlight as usable when you brought up the power wheel because you, Shep, would know that they didn't work. Small detail really, because I don't have much to complain about, lol.
So, yeah, loved it. Great humour, as expected, nice creepy bits on a par with the original (loved Horizon and creeping through deserted ships *shudder*) and I think they did a great job creating a very real sense of peril. While I love the geth there were very few points in the original where I really felt under pressure, I just had to demolish a load of robots or morally questionable humanoids, but in this one, with the new kinds of husks appearing out of nowhere and gangrushing you, the creepily implacable Scions, the collector swarms arriving in waves... yup, peril.

That was definitely one of mine. Trying to talk him down from executing the guy, only to have him make it perfectly clear to me that was what he felt like he really had to do. So... I stepped out of the way.
Also, Mordin's loyalty mission was great. Decent action, but the moments of talking about the morality of the genophage were really awesome.

I have to say, Garrus's character is certianly memorable. I have to say, his loyalty mission was something I sure did not expect. I didn't really notice him was slowly changing into something I wasn't sure i liked until he shot that guy in the knee. Thinking about it, i probably shouldn't of let him assasinate that other guy as well. If he wasn't a squadmate, and if i didn't really know him from the first game, i probably would have considered him an enemy.
SPOILER ALERT FOR THE ENDING
I got all the upgrades required for the normandy, got all the loyalty missions sorted out and completed as many side-missions as i could. The attack on the collector base went without a hitch, killed the boss, blew up the base, everyones happy.
HOWEVER: when the cutscene arrives, when you and your teamates (assuming they survive) are running to get to the normandy before everything dies, it showed a quick glance of Mordin, dead on the ground as collectors step over him. I remember thinking "when the hell did that happen!?". There was no specific cutscene, nor mention of him carking it. He just seemed to die right there and then. I did his loyalty mission and everything. Was this supposed to happen?

I know he died in mine, but that was just because of a choice I made during part of the final mission. I know it's possible to get through without anyone dying. I don't remember seeing him dead during that last cutscene, though. Right after that, during the scene in the ship, if someone died during your mission, it'll show a number of coffins, essentially, corresponding to the number of dead. So if you didn't see more of those than you knew about, I'd guess he didn't actually die.

Somewhat unrelated - but I started watching Stargate:Atlantis (because it's on watch instantly on Netflix). Anyone ever seen it? Main characters name is John Shepard. They are fighting against an enemy called the Wraith (Reapers) that harvest human colonists for food.
Sound somewhat familiar?

Mordin is notorious for dying in the final mission, even if you've done everything 'right'. Don't know if it's a glitch or just a weird anomaly the gamemakers worked in. He's survived for me in all my playthroughs, but reading message boards I seem to really be in the minority. Keeping him in your party for the last fight seems to lower the chances of it.
