Member Since: February 2003 RK: 9 MP: 2,872 | Thursday September 3, 2009 9:54 AM How long has it been since we've had a good Dragonlance discussion? Ages, I believe. Far too long for comfort at the very least.Well, I don't know if this will be much of a good Dragonlance discussion, but it is a Dragonlance discussion all the same. I finally, ~finally~ read Tanis, the Shadow Years. Good book. A bit... interesting, but good all the same. Well, anyhoo. Reading this book made me miss the companions and I am currently rereading the entire series. I'm on Autumn Twilight at the moment. Well, you know how when you reread a book you tend to find things you missed before? That, my fellow Krynnians, is exactly what I have done. Is it just me or is Raistlin something of a drama queen? He has this real flare for the dramatic and even Tanis noticed it during on of their private discussions. How has this escaped my notice in the past? Also, everyone here who knows me knows how much I love Tasslehoff. That hasn't changed. In fact, I think I've grown to love him even more while reading DoAT. I never realized just how intelligent Tas is. I mean, I know he's annoying and silly and really just in it for the fun of it, but you cannot deny his cleverness. And, not only is he clever, he knows how to be serious. (Of course, his seriousness doesn't last long, mind you.) I know many of you have probably moved on since DoAT, and probably don't even remember half the stuff. But, I would like to have an open discussion about this. Or, at the very least, I will continue to post my findings here. Even though it's an old journey that I've taken dozens of times, rereading the Dragonlance series feels like a whole new adventure. I'm really looking forward to it and am already enjoying it! I've really missed the companions. Slytherin Pride W.W.D.D. You are never too young to die nor too old to live. ~Me! Member Since: April 2002 RK: 13 MP: 6,208 | Thursday September 3, 2009 10:09 AM I just re-read DoAT a few months ago. I still enjoyed it, but not as much as I used to. I guess my tastes have changed slightly. It was still enjoyable...but not the same. Raistlin was whiny. But, I noticed more how Tanis was whiny as well. I don't know - it just wasn't the same. However, I still read a Dragonlance book every once in awhile for the nostalgia. Taking us all back to what every newbie would post: Are Zifnab and Fizban the same person?!?! Member Since: February 2003 RK: 9 MP: 2,872 | Thursday September 3, 2009 10:33 AM Thanks, Dally. I've really missed everyone around here. I'm glad to be back.I don't know about Tanis being whiny. Of course, I'm only on chapter 12. Actually, he seems to be very willing to take charge and be the leader of the group. Riverwind is a dick, though. Like, seriously. Never thought I'd ever say that about the Plainsman, but he really is. I mean, I understand the whole "protect the Chieftain's Daughter" stuff, but he's really just... ugh! Actually, now that I think about it, Tanis is a bit whiny when he's thinking of Kitiara and Laurana. Like seriously. Course, he was like that in Tanis, the Shadow Years, too. He has a really hard time getting over past loves. Then again, he seems like a very deep person. I suppose I cannot fault him for it. I mean, I still think about those guys I used to love. Flint is a bit on the whiny side, but his whininess is more comical than annoying. Slytherin Pride W.W.D.D. You are never too young to die nor too old to live. ~Me! Member Since: May 2000 RK: 12 MP: 5,754 | Friday September 4, 2009 12:18 PM To me, Tanis was, is, and has been pretty much everything we now call emo. Whiney, mopey, and then ok for a little bit.Raist always reminded me of the scary loner in the back of the classroom. The dork that is planning his revenge. Flint, stereotypical crotchety old guy. The one character that was always the biggest pain in the ass? Caramon. I got so fucking tired of his "I've got to take care of my brother". Member Since: February 2007 RK: 8 MP: 2,375 | Friday September 4, 2009 2:15 PM Definitely. Once you get in to it he does get quite tiresome. I'd be like that, though, if I had to hand around Laurana. I actually bought new copies of the series last year (brother ruined my originals), with the strongest of intentions to reread them, and some of the newer ones, but never actually got around to it. I do intend to, though. I'm going to be supervising evening study an evening a week in my school and I've that earmarked as reading time, lol. I think, like DD said, they're not the same, but they're still enjoyable, and I still have a huge amount of fondness for them. "Just imagine the headlines 'Howard Moon, Colon, Explorer'. Member Since: June 2001 RK: 13 MP: 6,586 | Friday September 4, 2009 4:35 PM About as long as it has taken me to finish Dalamar the Dark. I read like a chapter ever 3 months lol. It's been about 2 years since I cracked it open and just a few weeks ago I managed to reach up to maybe the last 70 pages of the book. Might I finish it before 2010? Hmmmm? I'm not making any promises ![]() You made me contemplate this book. At very first thought I recalled reading the intro chapter where I beleive tanis saved Kit from a forrest fire? They jumped in a lake and when they regained conciousness Kit was a very ungrateful wench of a woman. And after trying to think more on the book I couldn't recall a single thing other than that. lol I'm sure a breif..breifing would bring it all back to me. I'm seriously way out of touch with Dragonlace anymore. He was smart but not wise. Sitting alone in the corner of a busy tavern isn't secluding yourself and keeping a low profile. I've learned that when I was 10 years old at family gatherings. Ha ha ha. Right you are but he was written to be a primative sort. I liked what he became at the start of the Legends series. Fat, selfish and an overall has-been. Which of course was just a challenge put forth for him to overcome and make him out to be all the more bad ass when he whipped himself back into shape. I liked tanis. I think where most of you see him as whinny was just a fail on the authors part to make his personal struggles in both life and leadership seem deep and interesting. We were supposed to be getting a glimpse into the complex mind of a great leader weighing out his decissions. Instead we get a lot of redundant debate points which made him seem like a complainer and not a contemplator. ± Sometimes to become great one must become small ± |

Member Since: February 2003 RK: 9 MP: 2,872 | Friday September 4, 2009 7:51 PM Yeah. See? I've always liked Tanis. I mean, while I'll admit he's a bit whiny, I totally get where he's coming from with it. O.O Caramon is fat, selfish, and an overall has-been? Nova, you've ruined the books for me! I was ~trying~ to get a fresh take on the series, but then you come along and ruin it before I can even get finished with DoAT. *Giggles* JK Yeah... If Raistlin was wise, he never would have attempted to take over the world. Seriously. I think you're thinking of the wrong book. Tanis, the Shadow Years is when he goes back into someone else's memory to save a girl's life. In fact, it's like ~right~ after the companions part for their five years. You see a bit of Tika in the beginning, but no Kit. And that's one of my favourite books in the series. What's taking you so long to read it? Laurana got better, I believe. But, I haven't gotten that far yet. I remember that in the beginning, when we first meet her, she's a bit annoying, but she pans out well in the end. (I'll talk more of her when I get there.) Hi, Nanuk. How have you been? I guess I've just always liked Tanis too much to consider him whiny or mopey until this second reading. Even now, I don't consider him over the top like that. To me, his emotions are quite justified and understandable. I have to agree with you on the other three, however. When I originally read the books, I didn't like Caramon until the Legends trilogy. And even then, there was only a minor liking. Hey, Silv! I've missed you! *Huggles* [[Edited by tassanaburrfoot on Friday September 4, 2009 7:52 PM]] Slytherin Pride W.W.D.D. Member Since: September 2009 RK: 1 MP: 49 | Sunday September 6, 2009 10:26 PM I've recently reread DoAT and I still like Tanis, he's one of my favorite characters, aside from Dalamar, and I can really put myself in his place. I've heard that you only get a week of mopiness for each month you and your ex were together, but I just can't get over a guy from almost two years ago! I don't complain about it, but I do think about him often. I liked Caramon too, just not as much, and I hated Raistlin from the beginning, but I can see where Caramon's coming from too, having two older siblings, one of which is depressed and/or angry becasue her daughter was taken from her, so I have to comfort her and take care of her... just not in the same way. I know you haven't really said it, but I will. Most people think of Caramon as a guy with all brawn and no brain, but that's not entirely true, he just likes to look at things from every perspective. In the Legends, he seems very wise, at least when it comes to combat. |

Raistlin's not whiny, just misunderstood in his way of thinking. And I agree that he is smart but not wise. All he needs to do is open up a little and trust someone. Member Since: February 2007 RK: 8 MP: 2,375 | Monday September 7, 2009 2:45 PM ... oh, the discussions we used to have back in the day about getting him to do such a thing... they quite often involved a certain elf apprentice... I remember getting a slap on the wrist for those. Kit may have been involved... I'm just about fine, you adorable creature, and all the better for your being back ![]() "Just imagine the headlines 'Howard Moon, Colon, Explorer'. Got a ring to that don't it?" "Colon Explorer?"
